Karolina Pelc’s career trajectory has been extraordinary from croupier to CEO of an innovative iGaming company. Her vision is to redefine online gaming by transforming solo game sessions into engaging multiplayer entertainment experiences.

She started her career in gaming dealing at cruise ship tables almost two decades ago and she is today the founder and CEO of BeyondPlay, an online gaming consultancy whose clients include the biggest names in the industry. Lea Hogg asks Karolina if she ever wakes up and wonders how she got to where she is now.

‘’My dad was a casino inspector in Poland, and I followed him joining the industry almost straight after school, first as a croupier in Poland and then on cruise ships. I moved to London to study during the dot.com boom of 2008. I was keen to work online, but with no experience, I failed to break through in the industry. So I left and went to work in the Philippines. Asian players are different, and I learned a lot about casinos and value my land-based experience.

“For me, it is not about the end user; it is about a real person whom I can easily visualise because of my land-based experience. Bricks-and-mortar venues exposed me to real players and their behaviours, eventually contributing to my success online. What drives players is entertainment’’.

Pelc’s break came when the Betsson CEO hired her as a junior VIP poker manager. Karolina says she never intended to follow the online sector as a career. Nevertheless, she became one of the few women to climb to the top of the industry ladder, having started on the bottom rung. Moving to Malta, she spent seven years with Betsson, then three years at LeoVegas, collaborating directly with the founders. She was very much involved in building LeoVegas and bringing ‘first to market’ important features.

The arrival of her son prompted a move back to London, where she was offered a C-Suite position, but instead she chose to start her own consultancy business. With 15 years of sector experience and keen to carry on, she founded BeyondPlay. The function of the consultancy would transform solo game sessions into engaging multiplayer entertainment experiences.

In the first round of financing, she raised 1.7 million Euros from private investment and backing from LeoVegas. The second round of funding happened recently and attracted some very prominent investors and was oversubscribed. Nominated in the Entrepreneur of Excellence category at the 2021 UK National Diversity Awards, Katerina has spoken openly about the difficulties she and other women faced when trying to break into the industry. Forbes verifies her concerns and reports that while almost half of employees in the sector are female, only 25 percent of top executive positions in the industry are held by women.

“I am a big ambassador for women in tech and advise on how to find the right role. I want to make the sector attractive to women. I employ people on merit, and our gender mix is 50-50. We are fully remote and do not have an office. WFH works well for women. ‘’ I do not manage work-life balance. I think of it as a fulfilling balance. It’s a question of doing what you like instead of what you don’t. As a company, we offer flexible working hours. We all have kids and work around school holidays, sometimes organising trips during school holidays and nannies with us so that we can work’’.

The White Paper on changes to UK gambling regulation focusses on the combined impact of mobile phone ownership by young people, the marketing of online betting, addiction and gambling-related suicide. The Gambling Commission has called on video game companies to address the risks to children. They encouraged video game companies to work with regulators and take action. Karolina believes that “younger players who will be 25 in the next five years have grown up with video games about one person and the game. We are trying to give them multiplayer encounters and experience wins and losses with others. We want to create a community for young people. Our cut would be gamification and fun and spectator monetisation. We want people to be more passively engaged and get involved financially only when they want to.”

Slower gameplay with lower stakes and great entertainment reduces the risk of addiction. “I don’t want to criticise the industry,” she adds, “but we need to strive to be seen as providing responsible entertainment.” Even though companies champion responsible gaming, many are unwilling to accept the impact on a downturn in revenues. Karolina believes that this needs to become a norm in the industry. “If you are going to be a responsible operator, you’ll experience revenue loss.” There are insufficient measures to protect kids that don’t use streams. What we do with streaming is very popular. “When people use platforms like ours, we are making it safer, as before they access our content, they are fully KYCs.’’

Another cause that interests Karolina is ‘imposter syndrome’. “You might be surprised to learn that despite my success, I struggle with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt that, if I allow it, override any sense of accomplishment. It is more evident in women than men, but I overcome these concerns using techniques I read and write about” she says. She encourages fellow sufferers not to give in and to carry on and overcome negative thoughts. “You will get over it, and do not let it discourage you.’’
