PRINCIPLES

Featured speakers on the Convention program will include two educators who have attained prominence in the fraternity world, a noted Ohio minister, and one of the greatest baseball players and sportsmen of all time, Stan Musial. Musial, who at 42 is looking forward to another major league season in 1963 with the St. Louis Cardinals – the year in which he hopes to topple the last remaining major league record in reach (he is only three short of Babe Ruth’s record for the most extra base hits) – will address the Convention at the Friday night banquet. The first Stanley Musial Sportsmanship Award, and other Fraternity awards, will be presented after his talk. Introducing the famous star of America’s national pastime will be his former high school business teacher and longtime friend, Brother Paul Pfeiffer, who is now assistant educational adviser for the Fraternity. His former high school baseball coach, Dr. Michael Duda, now president of California Pennsylvania State College, is also expected to be on hand for the event.

Foundation News Over the course of the past year, your Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation has sponsored major programs, attracted new donors, and embarked on some new initiatives to secure a more solid base upon which to build the strength of our organization.

A highlight of the meeting was the initiation of a new Archival Narrative Series. This program grew from a suggestion by The Society of the Seventeen to conduct interviews with significant Sig Taus in order to create a personal video history of the Fraternity. Each interviewee will have the opportunity to share their personal experiences in the Fraternity, share stories which

At its Mid-Year meeting in January 2011, the Trustees of the Foundation had opportunities to renew their bonds of Brotherhood by engaging in interactions and discussions concerning the current and future plans of the Foundation. We heard a report on our investment portfolio, which was quite encouraging. As has been recent practice, the internal committees of the Foundation had a significant amount of time to meet to consider items to be brought forward to the full meeting. Our Development Committee is currently engaged in a comprehensive analysis of our various friend and fundraising opportunities as we look to creating an exciting major development project. Our Budget Committee spent a great deal of time reviewing our current spending patterns and taking a serious look at all the programs supported by the Foundation. We are most grateful for those who support our future with time, treasure and talent.

Again this year, many of our undergraduate brothers, including those who had not yet had the opportunity to avail themselves of doing so, have stepped forward to make a financial commitment to our future by becoming Collegiate Sustaining Members of the Wilson C. Morris Fellowship. The enthusiasm exhibited by the presidents in January continued into the regional conclaves held in the weeks following the Academy. We are so proud of these undergraduate brothers who have been inspired to share in the Wilson C. Morris Fellowship by making an initial contribution of $100 and agreeing to pay the balance due after graduation, which will enable them to become full members in the Fellowship!

We have been proud to again provide the financial support for our premier program, the Earl A. Webb Academy of Principled Leaders. As you know, this program allows our newly elected chapter presidents the opportunity to come together at the birthplace of Sigma Tau Gamma in Warrensburg, Mo. This January, those chapter presidents who gathered as relative strangers had countless opportunities to engage each other in substantive conversations about leadership, integrity, and the many ways to strengthen the bonds of Brotherhood in their respective regions, and amongst themselves. As always, one of the significant benefits of the Webb Academy is to inspire the assembled presidents by seeing the campus of our Founders as well as viewing the many artifacts of the Fraternity and the histories of many of them, which are on display at the Marvin Millsap Headquarters Building.

T. “Bill” Hembree, DMF, Epsilon, ’42, as our first interviewee. It is our hope that these interviews may be used in video and written form in a variety of settings including the SAGA, the website and at significant events in the future. We look forward to continuing to support the programs of our Fraternity and explore ways to encourage new ideas, which will keep Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity at the forefront among the larger fraternity community.

Chapter News Gamma P i (Stephen F. Austin State University) Three brothers from the Gamma Pi Chapter at Stephen F. Austin State University received the opportunity to meet with Texas Governor Rick Perry on Feb. 16.

Andy Teel, Jeffrey Jefferson and Nick Radack are members of their Student Government Association and were invited to SFA/ Nacogdoches Day at the State Capitol, which is an annual event hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University and Nacogdoches County and held while the Texas legislature is in session.

Members of SGA were given an agenda to meet and speak with senators and representatives about the goals of their university. A few members then decided to drop an agenda by Governor Perry’s office and asked if they could say hello to the governor. They were first told that the governor was busy since the legislature was in session, but they left their contact information. After about five minutes, the students received a phone call from the governor’s assistant informing them that Governor Perry had a brief moment to meet with them. The students met with the governor in his reception room and discussed current issues with higher education. “This opportunity to meet with the governor was a great experience and very educational,” said Andy Teel. “Hearing the governor’s input and goals on some of these issues helped me understand to a greater extent what is going on in our state.”

From left: Nick Radack, Jeffrey Jefferson, Governor Rick Perry, Sydni Mitchell and Andy Teel.

The students met with the governor for about 20 minutes. They not only spoke about funding for universities throughout the state of Texas, but also discussed some of the goals they wanted to accomplish. Executive Vice President Bill Bernier commented, “I am very proud of Andy, Jeff and Nick. They are using social skills honed in Sigma Tau Gamma to engage leaders in their state, and thereby exhibiting the Principle of Leadership. By doing so they are helping students at Stephen F. Austin State University and in all of the Texas higher education system.” Andy is SGA president, while Jeff is chief justice and Nick is associate justice of the SGA Supreme Court.

On Dec. 1, 2010, the Gamma Beta Chapter in collaboration with another student organization, Lead by Example, hosted the 2nd Annual World AIDS Day on the UW-Stevens Point campus. This day was dedicated to raising awareness of AIDS and those who are affected by it. The events of the evening included a candlelight walk around the campus, a presentation of the effect AIDS has across the world and a presentation by Isaiah Matthew, Gamma Beta chapter president, who spoke on the prevention of AIDS. The Gamma Beta brothers worked to promote the event by creating posters, bookmarks and signs to help spread the word of the cause. Pictured: (Back row, left-right): Erik Raether, Cortez Edwards, Isaiah Mathew, Doug VenHousen, Deontae Griggs. (Front row): Ben Hlina, Austin Loveless.

Kappa Provisional Chapter’s Jeff Verhoeven was grocery shopping with his parents when he noticed a truck was on fire and trapped inside were two dogs. Although he was frightened of the flames, Verhoeven and his father freed the dogs from the burning vehicle when they opened an unlocked door. One dog jumped out of the truck and ran away while the other one had to be pulled by his collar. The owner of the truck was inside the grocery store shopping and was surprised when he discovered what had happened. By the time the fire department arrived on the scene, the truck was too burned to determine the cause of the fire and it could not be saved; however, no suspicious activity is involved. Fortunately, there were no injuries or other property damage caused by the fire. Verhoeven, a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, credits his adrenaline for giving him the courage to save the dogs.

The alumni association conducted a campaign led by Ryan Buttrick ’08, Jose Flores ’07 and Mark Gearin ’96, which allowed them to find a blue and white house that is located just two blocks from the campus library and dormitories. It currently houses seven undergraduate brothers and has room to post all of the chapter’s composites and awards.

The Delta Phi Chapter of Fitchburg State University and the Epsilon Delta Chapter of the University of MassachusettsLowell came together to compete in a Snow Bowl Football Game. Epsilon Delta ended up winning the game 21-7. The two chapters hope to make this an annual event.

PATH

Since its colonization on the Lowell campus in 1992, the Epsilon Delta Chapter has been working hard to find a house to call its own. The chapter overcame the typical issues that plague upstarts including lack of funds, few available properties on suitable locations and a small chapter size, along with no university support, as Greek life has been unrecognized on the Lowell campus since 1987. Thanks to fiscal responsibility and a strong alumni association, the Epsilon Delta Chapter has grown to 40 members (the largest fraternity on campus) and now has a permanent home.

Lew DiRuzza, CSM, Delta Tau ’11 (Indiana State University), participated in Zeta Tau Alpha’s Big Man on Campus philanthropy event on March 25. The Big Man on Campus event is a male beauty pageant open to Indiana State University students that raises funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The pageant consisted of a talent portion, formal wear and a question and answer segment. Brother DiRuzza was selected in the top 5 and won the title of “Mr. Think Pink,” which is an award given to the contestant who raises the most money during the one week of “change wars” prior to the pageant. The “change wars” competition is a chance for any person on campus to donate their spare change to their favorite contestant competing in Big Man on Campus. DiRuzza raised $160.

A Sig Tau with a Different Type of Story Sigma Tau Gamma influences people’s lives in many different ways. Through Sig Tau, members grow in the six Principles, meet lifelong friends and discover their leadership potential. The years spent as an undergraduate in Sig Tau is a life changing time in which many people discover the direction of their future careers. One member, Jesse Green, Epsilon Kappa ’00 (University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth), got the opportunity to discover something he loved at his Sig Tau chapter house and since has made it a career and become one of the very best at what he does. “The Machine” Jesse Green is a Master Chainsaw Sculptor. “The funny thing is that I actually got my start carving in the side yard at our chapter’s house,” said Jesse. “If it wasn’t for the fact that

we had that house, I probably never would have even had the opportunity to try it. It’s one more thing that Sig Tau gave me.” Jesse received his bachelor’s degree in Sculpture/3-D Studies. He has since been commissioned by universities, celebrities, museums, the military, businesses, art enthusiasts, churches and even foreign royalty to create wood sculptors with his chainsaw. Jesse also uses his chainsaw talents performing in the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show (which was featured on America’s Got Talent) as the show’s emcee, chainsaw expert and axe thrower. When Jesse does not have his chainsaw in hand, he usually has a harmonica and enjoys being the front man of his rock n’ roll band, Fevah Dream.

Living our Principles through Community Involvement By Cara Mahon and contributing writer, Erik Kahl From improving the environment, to helping those in need or raising money for a favorite cause, serving within your community and beyond, not only demonstrates the Principle of Benefit towards others, but is also proven to benefit you individually. Volunteering gives one a sense of accomplishment, and also improves health and relationships. In each issue of the SAGA we see great examples of brothers giving back to their communities and through these examples, we understand the true impact that living our Principles can have on others and ourselves. There are two types of community involvement that our chapters engage in: service and philanthropy. Service is a handson, donated activity where members work to help others, while philanthropy is donating funds or awareness to a particular cause. The Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of WisconsinLaCrosse recently provided a great example of service, and the brothers of the Delta Pi Chapter at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown demonstrated giving towards a chosen philanthropy that has a deep meaning to them.

international service trips instead. Little did these brothers know that when they left the bitter cold of Wisconsin, spending 13 days in a different country would have such an impact on them. This past January, brothers Christopher Herbst, ’11; Andrew Verhoeven, ’12; Casey McHugh, CSM, ’11; Adam Bradley, CSM, ’12; and Erik Kahl, CSM-EF, ’10 served at a coastal village, Bunche, in Ecuador, South America. Brothers Matt Landi, ’10; Michael Yunker, ’11; Shaundel Spivey, ’11; and Brad Konkel, CSM, ’12; volunteered in Negril, Jamaica. “To experience a different culture and interact with individuals that have such a contrasting lifestyle from my own, helped develop a sense of purpose and direction,” said Brad Konkel. During the trips, the participants did minor construction projects; learned about local cultures, traditions and way of life; painted schools, nurseries and murals; built community; and established greater bonds of brotherhood, all while exemplifying and practicing the Principles of Sigma Tau Gamma. The most easily noted Principle practiced during the trip was Benefit, but participating brothers certainly demonstrated their Leadership through their actions on sites and in their downtime; Integrity by the way they conducted themselves throughout the experience; Excellence in the work they did and the services provided; Value in their motivation and support for one another;

and Learning by their openness to understand the unique culture around them. “Our values brought us together and inspired us to leave [it] just a little bit better than before we arrived,” said Matt Landi. The bonds that had already been forged in Sigma Tau Gamma made the experience all the more enriching for the brothers, and the memories of these experiences together will last a lifetime.

Delta P i Gives for

the

Cure

The Brothers of the Delta Pi Chapter dedicated themselves to philanthropy this past year by raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Choosing a philanthropy to stay devoted to can sometimes be difficult task, but the Delta Pi Chapter found Susan G. Komen to have great significance and personally affected their chapter. “The reason why we chose Susan G. Komen over any other organization is because when we were in the chartering process, the founding fathers wanted to do something that had great meaning to them,” said Matt Ziance, CSM ’13. “The first Delta Pi chapter president, Marc Myszak’s mother passed away during the chartering process, and the founding fathers found it best suited to start donating to Susan G. Komen in honor of his mother and as a way to show support for Marc.”

This past year, they raised funds by selling “Don’t Let Cancer Steal Second Base” t-shirts at their campus student union and at basketball and volleyball games throughout the year. The men also raised money by walking door to door to all of the resident halls on campus and sold custom wristbands that say, “Fight for the Cure.” The Delta Pi Chapter continues its efforts towards raising money to benefit Susan G. Komen. They recently held a sports memorabilia silent auction on March 18, which raised $740. They sold items from Steelers Hall of Famer, Jack Lambert; various items from their university’s men’s and women’s basketball teams; game gloves used by LaRod Stephens-Howling of the Arizona Cardinals; items from PGA star, Rocco Mediate and several items from the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Championship team.

The Delta Pi Chapter proves that there are many ways to raise funds for your favorite philanthropy, and by staying committed to the cause, anyone can make a difference.
