verba m it is high me we start thinking succession and take the business beyond individual or family ownership - Charles Chijide Managing Director, Charella Limited, a Fellow of the Adver sing Prac oners Council of Nigeria (APCON) Jan 2011
I must say that my rela onship with industry stakeholders is quite cordial because we have mutual respect for one another...I did the jo b I had to do and they agree the job had to be done so I walk away with all the respect I deserve. perhaps some players might have wanted me to bend the rules but like I said at LASAA expo, the interest of the State was way bigger than any single individual that wanted me to bend the law - Mako Alabi Group Managing Director, Vimedia Limited, Former CEO, Lagos State Signage and Adver sement Agency (LASAA) August 2014 9

WHO IS IN BREACH OF APCON LAWS
I
t all started when the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) indicted senior practitioners in the co u nt r y fo r t h e b re a c h o f N i ge r i a n advertising rules by foreign agencies, saying that the collaboration and conspiracy they provided the foreign investors is the cause of their impunity and defiance. there are no way foreign investors could come into the country and start advertising practice without having local surrogates aiding and abetting their operations. then came Jcdecaux, a French outdoor advertising agency, one of the biggest in the world. unconfirmed source reported that top executives in Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, LASAA have allegedly received huge inducements, running into several millions of Dollars, which created an enabling environment for the foreign firm to dominate the outdoor advertising industry at the detriment of indigenous advertising agencies. this foreign outfit, which is not a member of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria, APCON (advertising code breach), has been allocated some of the juicy spots by Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, LASAA, which is also a breach of process Several court cases had been instituted against the company over what was described as another breach of advertising status, where the foreign firm was allocated a site less than 200 meters from an existing site. Speculation ran rife that the Lagos state

government vis a vis LASAA had signed an exclusive advertising pact with JCDecaux on the ongoing Lagos Metroline project; and traffic interchange in Oshodi. If all these allusions are anything to go by, then the state government has just handed over all outdoor advertising services to foreigners. ''It might be catastrophic and monumental misstep to kill the nation's outdoor advertising sector. it is rather unfortunate that this development is taking place while the Federal Government is yet to constitute the governing council of the regulatory body as it would have been difficult for anyone to flout the advertising laws. why we all ponder on who is in breach of the APCON law, we introduce the February Edition with Henry Orajiaka, MD Moto-meida sharing his thoughts and Opinion with us among other regular features all for your reading pleasure. They always advice that, in life you don't work to please people but you work diligently, earnestly, efficiently and professionally to exhibit what can be added to improve or contribute to the success of the organization. WHY CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY?
BEST JOB?
I choose a career in the communication and advertising industry based on the passion, determination and the interest to use all the skills acquired to help build, maintain, and promote the brands and goals of an organization. While growing up, I have always developed that unique interest of representing an organization as their spokesperson through communication and creating new strategic ideas to build and maintain their reputation.

WHY Every state if the federation, has their own state regulatory body, and being a member of OAAN is not part of the requirement, most of the stages of registration doesn’t have OAAN membership has a requirement, and I have not really seen the drive to be a member yet, in as much as it's a powerful body, it needs to open up and embrace young companies. if you have to join any association, you have to ask yourself, what do I stand to gain, what do you benefit and all of that, so until these benefit are clearly spelt out, that is when I feel OAAN will have load of people within my level come into the association. what I think OAAN should do is to call like a conference and invite young mind, startups in the industry and give them like an open window to join the association, that way you have a lot of this guys come in and in that conference OAAN needs to highlight what each and everybody will benefit from the association. you can call someone to join an association without any benefit, because if you look like what is happening right now, you will see that OAAN is very weak at this point. I think that they need to call that conference, for people to come in, bring ideas. This young companies are doing volumes, take us for instance we handle a good number of accounts, about 7of them, now imagine what our billings would be at the end of the year. But the fact remains that we don't know what OAAN is going to offer us at the end of the day, everyday the rates keep going up from all the State regulatory agencies. OAAN is suppose to call everyone together and say we don't agree on this rate. we see them as a closed group, I have friends that we discuss and that is the perception everywhere. more like a closed door group thing. let them pull the door down, so sometimes, if am being asked about OAAN, I just have this picture of old men sitting together.

BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE SELF MANAGER by Kayode Omotoye you may easily lose your drive if you are in a team of risk averse people. Being in-line with your motivating factor is like positioning yourself along a very strong torrent of flood, less effort is required to get to your destination.
What is Self-Management? To succeed in life, the first person you need to lead is yourself. You cannot lead others when you have not mastered the art of leading your own self. Self-management is the management of or by oneself; the taking of responsibility for one's own behavior and well-being. An organization that lacks good self-managers will often experience setbacks, delay in projects, low employee creativity and productivity and many other bad indices. If there is any skill you need to develop, it should be to become a better self-manager. You may have been managing yourself reactively but self-management will put you on the path of proactive management.
3. Discover what you need to hear and learn how to say it in such a way that you will listen to your own advice and counsel At different seasons of our lives, we will need to hear what will give us a push into action and ultimately fulfillment. Sometimes the best person to listen to during these low periods is you. Yo u a r e t h e b e s t motivator you can ever have. Self-honesty is crucial to becoming an effective Self-Manager. Just as identifying a problem is an intricate part of solving that problem, knowing and accepting that you lack knowledge about something and need to learn about that subject is an intricate part of becoming an effective self-manager. You need to be honest with yourself. You know your strengths and weaknesses; you should be able to tell yourself the truth at all times.
The value of good self-management cannot be over-emphasized, it cuts across every area of life; family, work, religious affiliations, business, social activities etc. It is the foundation on which good success is built. Becoming a good self-manager will change your life forever. Four Steps to becoming an Effective Self Manager
1. Recognize and make the most of your strengths One of the best days of your life is the day you identify your strengths and begin to capitalize on them to achieve your goals. The truth is that no one is born empty. As individuals, we all have our unique strengths and weaknesses. But many are overwhelmed by their weaknesses and forget they are endowed with wonderful strengths. You become an effective self-manager when you begin to capitalize on your strengths to maximize the opportunities that come your way. Spend more time exploring your gifts, ask for feedback and receive it, be honest about your blind spots. The only way to know you've discovered your niche is to try things, take risks, learn from your failures and successes.
2.
4. Determine what you can do to assist yourself to perform
at your best consistently Never stop learning. Learn to add value to yourself daily. Peak performers aren't those who do not make mistakes, they just choose to press on even in the midst of failure. Always reflect at the end of each day and seek out what you can do to achieve better and faster results if that same scenario plays out again. In conclusion, you are the most important factor to your success and becoming an effective self-manager will change your life forever. Begin that journey today.
Identify the peculiarities of what motivates you
There are certain things that motivate each individual. It is your prerogative to find them. When you discover those things that keeps you motivated, staying motivated becomes easier. You then have to continuously position yourself in line with that motivating factor. For example, if you are the type that is motivated by challenging situations,

FCTA LOSES N3BN FROM OUTDOOR ADVERTISING The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) loses about N3billion annually, due to its inability to organize its outdoor advertising sector towards effective internally generated revenue.
“Long range visibility is impaired with resultant accidents at major junctions due to sight blockcelebrating ages by billboards and outdoor advertisement posts.' “Painfully, we found that the existing administrative st r u c t u re c h a rge d with the duty of regulating these practices was weak and in some cases, there were multiple standards as well as c o n f l i c t i n g administering agencies,” he said.
These facts to the came when the Department of Outdoor Advertising and Signage (DOAS) toured some major shopping malls in the city centre. Deputy Director of DOAS, Hassan Abubakar, who led the team that carried out the unscheduled tour, further displayed the frustration of his agency towards taking advantage in the vast opportunities presented in the industry to boost its IGR, when he lamented how residents were not complying in paying their taxes and other outdoor advertising fees.
However, the Director s a i d t h e administration was working to reverse the situation, with the setting up of a taskforce team to coordinate Outdoor advertising. According to him, the mandate of the body was to provide a standard for the control and regulation of advertisement and signage practice in FCT by ensuring global best practice, improving internal revenue and stemming the observed chaos
Abubakar, unwittingly lamented that illegally mounted billboards and Signages in some strategy positions within the city, have continued to litter the highways and streets of the territory without any recourse to the regulations.

It was because of the establishment of the hotel that the owner asked the council for a part of the street that was not occupied with houses. Abiok was just moved a little further. "The DPO, community leaders and Abiok himself (Lawal) saw we did not take over the street. We want to tile the place and put streetlights there and that was why we were given that particular portion. We didn't bring anything into this world and we won't take anything when we die. We didn't want this matter to get this far until some thugs were used to create tension, which made the police to intervene. But the matter is being resolved."
