Celebrating Greece and the Greek Culture

Greek festival attendees were greeted by Jim Landis from the Eclipse Theater LA dressed as the mythical Greek king
Kids could paint vases, create laurel wreaths and participate in “Pentathlon” events.
One actor, Phil Lantis, costumed as Mene laus, the king of Sparta, said while it’s ing the whole point of the series is so that people and their families in Santa Clarita can learn about something they’re not usually exposed to while having fun at the same time.
nice for people to come out and learn about Greek culture, what’s great about the “Celebrate” series is that it educates people about many different cultures.“Thiswhole ‘Celebrate’ series was founded to share the culture of our community and let people know about a lot of different cultures, en tertainment, fun and activities,” said Lantis. “Greece in particular, you know, one of the founding things of Western civilization … a lot of our traditions and kind of thoughts about how to do politics and some of those other things came from ancient Greece.”Miller elaborated on this by say

Kayla Kopitzke throws a plate at the “Plate Smashing” booth. In Greek culture plate smashing symbolizes the beginning of a new journey or is used to ward off evil.
This month’s event was done in col laboration with Eclipse Theatre LA, which provided costumed characters to add ambience and immersion.
P late smashing, a minotaur maze, Greek games, theat rical characters, and much more were available to at tendees of the city’s fourth install ment of its “Celebrate” series on Friday at the Canyon Country Com munity Center.
“I think the biggest thing that we’re hoping the community takes away from the event is that they learn something new about a culture that they maybe didn’t know before,” said Miller. “So we’re really hoping that they have a great time at the event and also again, they’re more in tune with the world around them in the cultures that we have here in the city of Santa Clarita.”
Casey Miller, event organizer for the city of Santa Clarita, said she’s been very happy with the way the whole series has turned out. “It’s been a lot of fun celebrating a different culture each month. We’ve noticed that a different community group kind of comes out and rep resents their own culture. So it’s great to see that ownership within our community,” said Miller. “For people that may not identify with that cul ture, they’re able to kind of become immersed in that community.”
Akin to the event’s earlier install ments, games, arts, activities, food, and music were all Greek-themed and had signs with detailed informa tion about the history and context of what each thing was based on.

Backer noted that his history major actually did relate to land development. “Land is nothing but history.” Also of benefit was that he really likes people. “A big part of my work is people apprecia tion,” he said. “And I met a lot of great mentors while with Newhall Land.” He did, however, go on and get his MBA from Anderson School of Busi ness at BackerUCLA.andJSB are active in the SCV communi ty, supporting service and charitable organizations, the SCV Chamber of Commerce and SCV Eco nomic Development Corporation.

I f you’ve driven north on the 14 Freeway through eastern Canyon Country in the last couple years, and looked across the riverbed, you’ve surely noticed the burgeoning devel opment of Vista Canyon. Approved by the city of Santa Clarita in 2011 for 1,100 residential units and 950,000 square feet of commercial space (office, retail, hotel), the project has, from its inception, been designed as a com munity in every sense of the word. It is described as “a new community that rei magines the suburban experience, combining the openness and nature of the Southern California lifestyle with a mass transit and pedestrian-orient ed, one-of-a-kind environment in which to live, work and play.” This reimagining includes a bus transfer center and Metrolink commuter rail station as part of the Vista Canyon Regional Transit Center, plus living/ working/shopping space within walking distance and easy access to trails and bike paths. Canyon Country All-Stars Head to Sectionals
Canyon Country Little League President Scot Mahotz has put in a ton of work over the years to keep the Daszek will be relied on to spark the Canyon Country side. The Beast is also the team’s shortstop, who can make plays all over the infield, ac cording to RightmyerRightmyer.sayshisgroup of kids is special and holds each other account able. The manager shared a story of one of his players getting in trouble at school. Teammates then held him accountable and peer pressured him out of being part of the wrong crowd, according to the head coach. “When someone’s hanging out with the wrong crowd, they’ll let them know,” said Rightmyer. “They’re ath letes who stick together. They look af ter one another. These kids are going to go far in life.” The manager also believes the bulk of his players will all make immediate league afloat and get them back on the winning column. Now with Canyon Country Little League back on the rise, the All-Stars will have the chance to really shake things up at Sectionals. The winner of the tournament will move on to com pete in the State Championships. The winners there move onto the Region al tournament, where the top teams will have the chance to head to the Little League World Series. Rightmyer thinks his team is great all around, starting with his pitching. The rotation of Trosper, Brody “Kid Vicious” Bayless, Gregory “G-Force” Michelin and “Z-Train” Zane Stauffer has been vital to the success of the team.Meanwhile at the plate, big hitters like William “Hammer’’ Peck, Isaac Arellano and Austin “The Beast” impacts on their high school teams next season as freshmen. For now, the team will focus on their next task at Sectionals. Right myer wants to see his team pick up where they left off as the competition is sure to get stiffer. “I’m hoping they continue where they left off,” said Rightmyer. “I really think if we have solid pitching and solid defense... There won’t be any more 15-run games and now every run counts. I’ve got a very disciplined team and a great coaching staff. I think we can win a lot of 3-2 games.”

The Canyon Country All-Stars will play the winners of District 16 in their sectional tournament opener. The two teams are scheduled to take the field at Encino Little League on Friday at 5 p.m.

The mix of great chemistry and intelligent players has given manager Rusty Rightmyer an easy job at the helm. “It’s fun,” said Rightmyer. “I started coaching five of these kids when they were 9-10 years old. That core has gotten better and better each year.” Rightmyer refers to himself as the doorman for these kids. Numer ous parents have commented on the strides their children have taken playing for him. Rightmyer insists he is just opening the door for the kids, showing what to do while they’re the ones doing all of the work. The manager is also grateful for his coaching staff Jason Stauffer, Jeff Beadnell and Mark Peck, noting the team couldn’t have gotten this far without this is his best team in years and said Northridge had consistently mercied Canyon Coun try over the past few seasons.

Dena said they would have to get there early for parking, which meant waiting in the heat on a hot day for the music to start, and there were normally large crowds. These can be challenging or over whelming things for anyone, but they’re especially so for someone with special needs.

Sometime in 2017, Dena came up with an idea: Why not have a concert specifically tailored for people with special needs? “Over the years I just thought myself, ‘Why don’t we have one for our differently abled community?’ They would love it (because) they love music and they love to dance,” said Dena. So, Dena pitched her idea to the City of Santa Clarita. They loved it. “She had this great dream and got a collec tive group of people that got behind her and she reached out to the city and together we helped to plan this event,” said Kyle Lopez, arts and events supervisor for the City of Santa Clarita. It’s “really, (they) just kind of need some additional help.”

Since it is sometimes difficult for people with special needs to stay still for long periods of time, attendees could participate in a variety of activities such as sports games, sensory activities, petting therapy dogs, drum circles, and of course music and dancing.
Chandra Neal-Chutte, who was in attendance with her son Ryan, said she’s very thankful there were athletic activities for her son at the event and that the city does a great job of providing resources once people with special needs leave public schools.
“It turned out amazing to watch these children. It was almost, it was overwhelming, really. [It] just came together so beautifully,” said Dena. “And watching these kids dance, I mean, they’re just so excited and they were just having a great time. It felt really, really good that… the community and the city, we gave them something that they could enjoy and I’m just really overwhelmed by how it all turned out and how everyone enjoyed it.”
Speeches were also given by Bill Smitrovich from the show “Life Goes On,” which was the first tele vision drama to center around a character with special needs, and by Mayor Laurene Weste. Music was provided by the Los Angeles-based band, The Replicas.Denasaid it was moving to see other parents and family members of people like her daughter enjoy ing what initially just started as an idea in her head.
Dena said Alexandra loved the event, too.
“We had face painting and a lot of different other activities, and she had a great time. She went to all the booths and just had a great time. I mean, it was just wonderful for her,” said Dana.
“I think Santa Clarita is great with their inclusion of special needs and the programs that are involved. There’s just more publicity about it and you know, people are aware of it and it gets moreLopezsupport.”saidan event that represents this commu nity was an essential goal and that bringing people from all demographics in Santa Clarita was also a benchmark the city set out to achieve.
“I love that just because he’s very athletic and high school programs don’t really have athlet ic programs for special needs kids… I’m thank ful for programs that, you know, provide an outlet for him to be athletic and safe and inclusive,” said Neal-Chutte.
In addition to all the activities Alexandra did, she also, of course, danced. ita and I think not everybody is able to come to events and we want to be able to offer events that can meet all different demographics,” said Lopez.
“This isn’t something we’ve offered before. We do want to meet all the demographics that are here in Santa Clarita, and I think by offering this event, we’re able to achieve that by bringing folks into something that they may not otherwise be able to attend.”Dance lessons were given at the beginning of the event by Riley Weinstein, who was paralyzed at an abled

VISTA CANYON Continued from page 8
SCV Water replaces potable water that would be used“Theotherwise.endresult is a net-zero water use at Vista Canyon.” And he added that the water plant will get 20% to 25% of its power from solar panels. “We are proving it can work,” he said. “We are commit ted to sustainability.”
The Canyon Courty community will also have a bus transfer center and Metrolink commuter rail station as part of the Vista Canyon Regional Transit Center.
“We had hundreds of community meetings, large and small,” he said. “We got great insights into what people wanted, and we’ve tried to incor porate that, along with meeting our obligations for access,“We’veetc.tried to build something that the com munity will be proud of for many years to come. Vista Canyon is a transit-oriented, mixed-use project with a town center (Lincoln Place) in the middle and a three-story elevation to give a home town, small town feel.”
And he explained that the reclaimed water used by S Hart Baseball and Softball. “Two of my three kids played. I coached one in baseball and one in softball,” he said. “We (JSB), with my consultants, redid the canteen, the infrastructure, brought it up to speed. It was a great experience.”

And, he added, “It’s car-optional, with lots of other transportation options — train, bus, bike, walking, even horseback riding, all of which are completed or in progress. And while we don’t have space to board horses, we do have a hitch ing post installed at the trailhead at Vista Canyon Park.”With its limited sprawl, “Vista Canyon is really an urban project in the suburbs,” Backer said. The master plan was created by Johnson Fain, which has an impressive portfolio, and the Gensler firm provided cutting edge architecture, such as oper able windows, open space and high ceilings — “to make walking to the office in the morning excit ing.”
the project, we worked with an environmental ac tivist from Los Angeles,” Backer said. “She provided great insights and observations and recommended we have a water plant. We take the liquid portion of sewage and treat it three times. One-third of that clean output is used at Vista Canyon, via our purple pipe system, as re claimed water (non-potable). The other two-thirds are sent offsite for non-potable use by SCV Water.”
Backer said he has always been active with NorthPark Community Church, and that he and Glenn Adamick have helped other churches through their development processes. “Sometimes, people expect development to be easy. It isn’t,” he said.Backer noted that he’s watched the SCV grow tremendously over his years here, in population and size. “But when you are involved with the community, it’s a small place, still.”
Sustainability When complete, Vista Canyon will have sustain able spaces for retail and restaurants, with solar panels, EV charging stations and drought-tolerant landscaping. There will also be a 200-room hotel with multiple meeting spaces. Existing residents occupy 245 single-family, En ergy-Star certified, KB-built homes, and 480 lux ury apartments. Future plans include 117 senior apartments. “We have 725 of 1,100 living units al ready built,” Backer said, “and 96% of the finished apartments are already leased.” Most exciting and innovative will be the Vista Canyon Water Factory. “When we first envisioned

A New Kind of Community Backer and JSB believe in the SCV community as a whole, and also believe they are enhancing that community through Vista Canyon.

History in Pictures —
D illenbeck Market started in the ear ly 1960s when the development of the North Oaks subdivision dramatical ly increased the population of what came to be known as “Canyon Country.” Its own ers were Charlie Dillenbeck, whose family had been in town since at least the late 1940s and who worked at the Solemint Store on the opposite cor ner before he decided to venture out on his own; and Frank Collins, a poultry farmer. Dillenbeck Market proved to be too much com petition for the Solemint Store, which shut down within a few years’ time. After that, Dillenbeck was the only meat market in the vicinity — but its days, too, were numbered as Canyon Country’s popula tion exploded in the 1970s and 1980s. A flurry of modern chain grocery stores opened on nearly ev ery street corner in the heart of Canyon Country to meet the new demand, and Dillenbeck was history. Collins and Dillenbeck did try their luck in the old Safeway space in Newhall before quitting for good. (Tresierras Market replaced it there.)

The original Dillenbeck building at Solemint Junction stood derelict for several years and had been condemned by the time it was razed in July 1995.
