Passover is a Jewish celebration that begins this year at sundown on Saturday, April 12 and ends on Sunday, April 20.

According to the religious resource My Jewish Learning, Passover is a festival of freedom that marks the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and their freedom from slavery. The term “passover,” which is also known as “pesach,” coordinates to a key moment in religious history.

According to texts, the Egyptian Pharaoh refused to liberate the children of Israel, despite requests from Moses and his brother, Aaron. The

pharaoh was warned that his people and he would be punished if the pharaoh did not comply. Persistent and obstinate in his refusal, Pharaoh was subjected to 10 plagues, each of which was more devastating than the previous one. These plagues included blood, frogs, bugs, flies, pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness and finally the demise of all firstborn males. To be spared the penultimate

devastation, Israelites were instructed to sacrifice a lamb for a meal and to mark their doors with its blood. The Lord would see the blood and pass over that household, sparing the occupants’ sons.

Because Passover is so symbolic, Passover seders, which take place either on the first Friday or both the first and second Friday of Passover, feature many traditions. It is customary to read the Haggadah at the seder table, but celebrants who cannot come togeth-

er may share these important stories, blessings and songs via an online video chat.

Traditionally, an egg, bitter herbs, a shank bone, parsley, haroset (chopped mixed nuts, fruits and cinnamon) and lettuce are included. Celebrants can even experiment with making unleavened bread at home if necessary. If horseradish for a bitter herb is unavailable, any item that can cause tears, such as ginger or raw lemon, may be substituted.

Passover is an important part of Jewish history and a holiday that is celebrated each year with vigor. (MC) 

NNATIONAL PARK WEEK

ational Park Week 2025 will be held April 19-27. This is the time to show your love for these national treasures and celebrate the National Park Service.

On Aug. 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act creating the National Park Service, a federal bureau in the Department of the Interior responsible for maintaining national parks and monuments.

The National Park System has since expanded to 433 parks and monuments, more than 150 related areas and numerous programs that assist in conserving the nation’s natural and cultural heritage for the benefit of current and future generations. The best way to support the national parks is to volunteer and donate to the National Park Foundation at give.nationalparks.org.

St. Francis Dam Disaster National Memorial, Monument

Located up San Francisquito Canyon Road in the Santa Clarita Valley, the Saint Francis Dam Disaster National Memorial and Monument was designated on March 12, 2019 by Congress.

The memorial is intended to honor the victims and memorialize the history of the St. Francis dam disaster.

To learn how you can help this project visit the St. Francis Dam National Memorial Foundation at https://stfrancisdammemorial.org/.

Visit National Parks

To kick off the National Park Week celebration, entrance fees to national parks are waived on Saturday, April 19.

There are 33 national park sites in California, more national parks and monuments, than any other state or territory. If you plan to visit three or more of the major California parks, you’ll save money by getting an annual $80 America the Beautiful Pass.

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident age 62 or older, have a permanent disability, are

a current U.S. Military member, Gold Star Family member, veteran or are a student in the 4th grade, you may qualify for other passes.

If you plan to camp in any national park this summer book your spot now as campgrounds are filling quickly. Visit Recreation.gov.

Book now for lodging in or near Yosemite, Kings Canyon/Sequoia and Death Valley National Parks.

Southern California National Parks

Channel Islands National Park

This national park is one of the most interesting of all of California’s southern national parks because the only way to get to it is by boat. The park features one of the most diverse collections of animal and plant species in the country. Dubbed as the “Galapagos Islands of North America,” Channel Islands National Park is comprised of five islands including San Miguel, Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, Anacapa and Santa Cruz. Typically, travelers can expect to pay anywhere in between $50 and $75 for a roundtrip ferry to the park.

Death Valley National Park

Tucked between southern California and the Nevada border sits one of the largest national parks in the country. It is one of the hottest and driest places in the country, so summer travel is not advised. Sand dunes, endless valleys, deep colorful canyons against a blue sky and rugged mountains make Death Valley a must-see stop.

Top tourist draws include Golden Canyon, Badwater Basin, Artists Palette & Artist’s Drive and Zabriskie Point, the most famous viewpoint in Death Valley.

Joshua Tree National Park

With almost 800,000 acres of desert and where two major deserts collide, the Mojave and Colorado, Joshua Tree is home to one of southern California’s most intriguing national parks. It offers a variety of plants and wildlife. Hiking, bouldering, rock climbing and star gazing.

Cool Whip Easter Eggs and Traditional Easter Bread

Forget the store-bought kits — whipped topping and food coloring are all you need to create the coolest Easter eggs possible. These adorable marbled eggs couldn’t be easier to create; get the kids involved and turn this into a fun family activity.

Cool Whip Easter Eggs

12 hard-boiled white eggs, unpeeled

2 cups white vinegar

3 cups whipped topping

Food coloring

In a large bowl, cover eggs with vinegar. Soak 2 minutes. Drain eggs, then thoroughly dry. On a large plate or baking sheet, spread whipped topping in an even layer about 1/2" thick. Drop food coloring in single drops into whipped topping, spacing about 1" apart, in as many colors as you choose. Using a toothpick, swirl colors to a marbled effect.

Working in batches and wearing latex gloves if desired (we recommend doing half of eggs first, then repeating the decorating process for remaining eggs for a more vibrant color), roll eggs in whipped cream. Let sit 10 to 15 minutes.

Remove from whipped cream and rinse until no whipped topping remains. Let dry on paper towels.

Keep the dyed eggs in the refrigerator when not displaying them; they should keep for up to 1 week. To ensure safety, don’t let the eggs sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours. For longer display, I recommend setting the eggs in

a bowl of ice.

What to do with Easter Eggs?

Homemade Easter bread is one of the oldest holiday traditions for very good reason. If you’ve never heard of this Easter tradition, allow me to introduce you. A sweetened, yeasted dough incorporates colored eggs baked right into the bread, resulting in a soft and fluffy bread that is just as adorable to look at as it is incredible to eat. Serve it as the perfect festive centerpiece to your Easter brunch, or as a colorful addition to your Easter dessert spread! If you have any leftover dyed eggs (or are looking for a fun baking project to get the kids involved), then this bread is the ideal holiday activity to celebrate every year.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

1 cup whole milk, heated to 110°

1/2 cup (100 g.) plus 1 tsp. granulated sugar, divided

2 1/2 tsp. active dry yeast (1 [1/4-oz.] packet)

4 1/2 cups (540 g.) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

2 tsp. kosher salt

6 large eggs

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened, cut into cubes

1 cup boiling water

2 tsp. distilled white vinegar

Food coloring

Egg wash, for brushing

Sprinkles, for topping

Grease a large bowl with cooking spray. In a small bowl or liquid measuring cup, combine milk and 1 tsp. Sugar; sprinkle yeast on top. Let sit until frothy, about 8 minutes.

In the large bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the

dough hook, beat flour, salt, and remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Add yeast mixture and 2 eggs. Beat until a very soft dough forms, about 5 minutes. Increase to medium-high speed and add butter, 1 Tbsp. at a time, beating well after each addition, until dough pulls away from sides of bowl, about 15 minutes.

Transfer dough to greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Meanwhile, divide 1 cup boiling water between 2 bowls. Add 1 tsp. vinegar and desired food coloring to each bowl. Add 4 remaining eggs, one at a time, and let sit 5 to 10 minutes, depending on preferred color. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to a wire rack set in a baking sheet.

Arrange a rack in center of oven; preheat to 375°. Line a large baking sheet with parchment. On a lightly floured surface, divide dough into 3 pieces. Roll each piece into a 16"-long rope. Place ropes side by side lengthwise on prepared sheet. Pinch top ends together, then tightly braid ropes together. Bring ends together to form a circle and pinch together.

Press dyed eggs into braid, then cover dough and let rise until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.

Brush with egg wash and top with sprinkles. Bake bread until golden brown, about 30 minutes. Let cool slightly.

A History

The Fields are a result of nearly 85 years of floral cultivation that began with Luther Gage, an early settler and horticulturist that settled in the area in the early 1920’s. He brought ranunculus seeds to the area and began growing them in his fields next to Frank Frazee’s small vegetable farm. In 1933 Frazee also started growing ranunculus and introduced his son Edwin to the art of seeding, cultivating and irrigating the pretty but not yet popular flower. At the age of 16, Edwin Frazee quit high school to work full time on his father’s burgeoning flower operation.

The ranunculus is native to Asia Minor and a member of the buttercup family. The beautiful colors and fullness of the flowers you see now are due to the careful selection done by Frazee over many years. If nature provided a full flower or an unusual color, he would save the seed and plant them the next year. This resulted in full flowers in 13 different colors including picotee, (a mixture of variegated colors).

Frazee made several moves over the years but in 1965 he moved his ranunculus along with gladiolus growing operation to the current site, land owned by the Ecke Family. They had previously used the land to grow poinsettias. Paul Ecke Jr. and Frazee were both flower farmers which helped

form a strong bond. When Frazee decided to retire in 1993 Ecke Jr. convinced him to stay on as a consultant, to continue his legacy.

In 2002 Ecke Jr. died and two years later Frazee.

Today, The Flower Fields represents the synthesis of a working ranch and regional tourist attraction. 

Next up for Powell was Amazon MGM Studios’ documentary “The Blue Angels” (2024), which earned positive reviews from 83% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Then “Twisters” (2024) delivered $372.3 million, proving that he’d arrived at the upper crust of leading men. His next film “The Running Man” (due on Nov. 7) co-stars Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, William H. Macy, Sean Hayes, and Colman Domingo. It’s about murderous hunters pursuing people across the world for money.

In March, Powell also wrapped the black-comedy/thriller “Huntington,” with Margaret Qualley, Topher Grace and Ed Harris. In addition, he created, wrote and produced the comedy TV series “Chad Powers” with Michael Waldron. of the greatest comebacks in showbiz history. The “Baywatch” babe, more famous for swimsuits than acting, floored everyone with “The Last Showgirl.” She jumped right into the “The Naked Gun” reboot, opposite Liam Neeson, which releases on Aug. 1. Then Anderson popped right into the thriller “Rosebush Pruning,” with Elle Fanning and Riley Keough. She also has the upcoming drama film “Place to Be,” co-starring Best Actress Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn (“Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”) and Adapted Screenplay Oscar winner Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit”). Village Roadshow Pictures, once a very successful production company thanks to “The Matrix” franchise, “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Joker” and “The Lego Movie,” has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy because of $223.8 million in asset-backed secured notes and $163 million of senior-secured debt. This was due to the Keanu Reeves starrer “The Matrix Resurrections” (2021), which cost $190 million and only grossed $159 million.  © 2025 King Features

Pro Tips for Maintaining Your Lawn Mower

Most homeowners strive for beautiful yards, but neglecting a key component of lawn maintenance - the lawn mower itself - can lead to issues not only with your lawn but with the machine as well. A well-maintained mower provides a cleaner cut, which promotes healthier grass growth. Neglecting regular maintenance can result in uneven cuts, scalping and other issues that can damage your lawn.

Regular maintenance also ensures your mower operates at peak efficiency, which can extend the lifespan of your mower, saving you money in the long run by preventing costly repairs or the need for a new machine.

To unlock the full potential of your lawn mower, clean it after each use to prevent buildup of grass clippings and debris, and store it in a dry, sheltered place between uses. Additionally, regular maintenance including checking the oil level, inspecting the air filter and ensuring the blades are sharp can

prevent larger issues and keep your mower running smoothly.

Change the Oil Drain the old oil from your mower and refill it with fresh, high-quality engine oil.

Replace the Air Filter A clogged air filter can reduce your mower’s efficiency. Replace it with a new one to ensure optimal air flow to the engine.

Change the Spark Plug Remove the old spark plug using a spark plug wrench and replace it with a new one. This ensures reliable ignition and efficient fuel combustion.

Sharpen the Blades Remove the blades and sharpen them using a file or a sharpening tool. Reattach them securely before mowing.

Clean the Deck Grass clippings and debris can accumulate under the deck. Clean it thoroughly to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.

Inspect the Belts and Cables Check for any signs of wear or damage. Replace any worn or frayed belts and cables to avoid future breakdowns. Visit eLivingtoday.com to find more advice to keep your lawn and garden equipment in pristine condition. (Family Features) 

How To Understand Your Metabolism

Metabolism is often discussed but perhaps not fully understood. The Cleveland Clinic says a person’s metabolism encompasses all of the processes within cells that keep the body functioning as it should. Metabolism provides the body with constant energy so it can perform essential tasks like breathing and digestion. The following are some things to know about metabolism and whether it is possible to utilize it to spur weight loss.

Fast versus a Slow Metabolism?

A person’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) may be fast, slow or somewhere in between. Someone with a fast BMR will burn a lot of calories, even while at rest. Those with a slow BMR need fewer calories to keep it go-

ing. Genetics, medication use, illness, and activity level may affect BMR.

Exercise and Metabolism

The answer to if exercise boosts metabilism is yes and no. According to MedlinePlus, it is true that a person burns more calories when they exercise, but that increased calorie burn only lasts as long as the workout and maybe an hour or so afterwards. Once a person stops moving, his or her metabolism goes back to its resting rate. Therefore, eating a ton of calories after a workout thinking that a red-hot metabolism will burn through them for the rest of the day could be setting a person up for weight gain.

The same can be said for mistakenly thinking adding muscle will boost metabolism. Muscle burns more calories than fat and that boost does last a bit

longer than the workout itself.

Biggest Impact on Metabolism

Metabolism is largely influenced by genetics, according to Harvard Health Publishing. Therefore, diet and exercise can be beneficial, but ultimately a person’s genes dictate BMR. Also, most of the time the activities of keeping the brain, heart, kidneys, and lungs working account for most of a person’s metabolic function.

Diet-Induced Thermogenesis

Many people think that restrictive diets that are light on calories are good for losing weight, but that can sometimes backfire by slowing down a person’s BMR. Harvard Health says diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), or the effect of eating certain metabolism-boosting foods, may increase resting metabolic rate. Foods and bev-

erages that may impact DIT include lean protein, unrefined carbohydrates, caffeine, and green tea. DIT tends to be higher in the morning, so eating larger meals earlier in the day may help burn more calories.

Metabolism is a complex process that is affected by many things, none greater than genetics. A person may be able to realize moderate gains in boosting metabolic rate but there is no magic pill to increase metabolism. (MC) 

Understanding the Importance of Lawn Care for New Homeowners

Shortly after buying a home, many first-time homeowners recognize how challenging it can be to maintain a property. Many embrace that challenge and refashion their homes to reflect their personalities, interests and tastes.

First-time homeowners may direct the bulk of their attention to decorating the interiors of their homes upon moving in, but the work extends outside as well.

Tending to a lawn is a responsibility worth taking seriously, as the American Society of Landscape Architects reports a well-groomed landscape can increase resale value by anywhere from 15 to 20%.

First-time homeowners may not be thinking about resale value, but it’s never too early to prioritize lawn care, which should include routine fertilization.

Fertilizing can ensure a lawn grows in lush, green and healthy, but firsttime homeowners may want to know a few things prior to taking a spreader for a spin for the first time.

Identify what the lawn needs before purchasing fertilizer No two lawns are the same, and that’s something to

Its common for first-time homeowners to think about the interior of a home. However, a wellgroomed lawn can increase your resale value by as much as 20%.

PHOTOS ©ADOBESTOCK

keep in mind when shopping for fertilizer. Even neighboring properties may have different soil needs, so it’s imperative that homeowners identify any nutrient deficiencies prior to fertilizing.

A simple, inexpensive soil test can reveal what a lawn needs, and such results can help homeowners pick the right fertilizer for their properties.

Get

a handle on nitrogen needs

First-time homeowners will undoubtedly come across fertilizers promising to address nitrogen needs in a lawn, but it’s important to avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen.

Nitrogen is absorbed quickly, particularly when homeowners remember to water each day after fertilizing. So it’s easy to add too much nitrogen, which can lead to the development of thatch that ultimately blocks sunlight, nutrients and water, thus leading to weaker roots and a lawn that looks nothing like the lush, green carpet homeowners are aiming for.

Understanding the minerals and nutrients in your soil will help you design the right plan for your lawn to keep it healthy. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the three essential macronutrients that plants need to grow.

Homeowners concerned about overdoing it with nitrogen can utilize a slow-release fertilizer that gives the lawn time to absorb nutrients and break them down.

Apply evenly Even application is an important component of successful fertilizing. Many find it easier to apply fertilizer evenly when using a spreader with a granule fertilization product. Spray fertilizers can work as well, but first-timers may find it difficult to apply products evenly when spraying. When using a spreader, read fertilizing packaging instructions carefully to ensure the spreader is on the right setting when starting. If the setting is not correct, you may end up spreading too much or too little fertilizer.

Fertilize more than once The lawn care experts at Lawn Doctor¨ note that strategic applications across the seasons will increase the chances a lawn comes in lush and green. Fertilizing

more than once between spring and fall is a necessity no matter which type of grass is in the yard, but the timing may vary depending on grass type and local climate. Consult with a local lawn care professional to determine when and how often to fertilize.

Fertilizing a lawn can produce a home exterior homeowners can be proud of, even if they have little or no experience with lawn maintenance.

QIs “Watson” going to be renewed for a new season? Morris Chestnut has been one of my favorite actors ever since “Nurse Jackie,” so I hope this new show lasts.

— R.C.

AAccording to TVLine, “Watson” is averaging 6.8 million total viewers, making the decision to renew it an easy one for CBS. It’s set six months after the death of Sherlock Holmes, Watson’s friend and prote-

ge, and stars Morris Chestnut in the titular role.

Chestnut became a household name after co-starring in the critically acclaimed John Singleton film “Boyz n the Hood.” His stint on “Nurse Jackie” as Dr. Ike Prentiss was in 2013, and he followed this with recurring roles on several other series like “The Resident” and “Reasonable Doubt.”

“Watson,” however, is arguably his biggest role yet. Interestingly, Amazon is developing a reboot of “Nurse Jackie” with star Edie Falco, but the premiere date has yet to be announced.

QWhen is the reality show “The Valley” coming back? I surprisingly enjoyed it last year and was happy it got renewed.

AApril 15 is the date that the suburban reality-show soap opera premieres on Bravo, and it reaires the following day on Peacock. If you’ve seen the trailer at BravoTV.com, you’ll know that it’s filled with even more drama than its debut season, with former “Vanderpump Rules” stars Britney and Jax separating, Jax going to rehab for an admitted drug addiction, and even the seemingly stable couples coping with rumors of infidelity.

Other former members of the “Vanderpump Rules” wait and bar staff are also expected to appear on “The Valley,” including Lala Kent, Sheana Shay and hubby Brock Davies, and Tom Schwartz. Lala and Sheana have also bought homes in the San Fernando Valley, so they’re most certainly hoping to end up being permanent cast members in the future.

As for “Vanderpump Rules,” the next season is expected to debut on Bravo with its all new Gen-Z cast this fall. Season two of the other “VR” spin-off, “Vanderpump Villa,” will launch on Hulu beginning April 24 and will take place in Italy inside a 12th-century castle, relocating from its original location in the south of France.

QI’ve been watching “Ally McBeal” on Hulu. I’ve seen most of the cast on other shows since then, but whatever happened to the guy who played Billy?

AActor Gil Bellows has actually worked quite steadily since playing Ally McBeal’s (Calista Flockhart) first love. After his character was killed off, he quickly landed another series, “The Agency,” on CBS and the Emmy-winning movie “Temple Grandin.” His most recent roles have been in the Neil Gaiman fantasy drama series “American Gods,” the Syfy horror series “Chucky,” and “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” on Fox. He also gueststarred on “The Irrational,” a current NBC drama series starring Jesse L. Martin, another “Ally McBeal” alum. How Arthritis Can Affect Daily Life and Mobility

Arthritis is a broad category of joint and connective tissue disorders that impacts around one in five people in both Canada and the United States, according to the Arthritis Society of Canada. In fact, arthritis is a leading cause of disability for many people around the world. Arthritis becomes a greater concern as people age. That’s particularly so with osteoarthritis, which is degenerative condition caused by repeated use and stress on joints.

Common symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, swelling, reduced mobility and physical weakness. Such signs underscore how much arthritis can affect daily life.

Symptoms may come and go, but it’s not always easy living with arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis. Also, in some people, rheumatoid arthritis can damage body systems beyond the joints, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels,

There is no cure for arthritis, so working on lifestyle changes can improve quality of life and help people manage day-to-day tasks more easily.

Lose weight Carrying around extra weight can put greater stress on joints, causing more pain and stiffness. Losing a little weight can help alleviate stress on hips and knees and facilitate mobility.

Take medicine Talk to your doctor about which

ly symptoms. Certain prescriptions and over-thecounter options can help prevent flare-ups and may even reduce the risk of further problems.

Find balance Johns Hopkins Medicine suggests toggling between activity and rest to protect joints and lessen symptoms. Take breaks when needed, and don’t feel down on yourself if you can’t exercise for as long or as intensely as you once did.

Get regular activity Certain exercises can help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Consult with a doctor about what you can do to keep joints flexible. Swimming, walking and low-impact aerobic exercise can promote flexibility.

Talk to someone Arthritis also can come with emotional symptoms that you may want to discuss with a mental health professional.

Arthritis affects millions of people’s lives, but management of the condition can improve quality of life. (MC) 

Drivers who want their cars and trucks to look their best should not forget their vehicle interiors. Drivers unsure where to start can spruce up their vehicle interiors in the following ways. Remove any trash Wrappers, receipts, empty water bottles and other items can quickly pile up inside a car, especially for drivers who have young children. Routinely go through the vehicle to gather and remove debris.

Vacuum Start off with a can of compressed air and blow out dust and any other dirt that has accumulated in tight crevices. Then use a high-powered vacuum to conduct a thorough cleaning.

Pay attention to the seams of car seats, door handles, armrests, floor mats (and under them), underneath child safety seats and the trunk or cargo area. If you don’t have a vacuum with a lot of suction, use one at a doit-yourself car wash location.

Scrub floor mats Drivers with rubber mats can remove them and make a mild cleaning solution of a few drops of dish soap and warm water. Use a soft-bristled brush to clean the mats. Upholstered mats can be shampooed

Clean the upholstery Seats can get dirty and dingy over time. For cloth vehicle seats, use a proper spray or foam upholstery cleaner. All-purpose cleaner can work on vinyl seats, but leather seats require a special leather soap and conditioner. Avoid products with silicone, which can stain your clothes and may make interior surfaces too slippery.

Address glass surfaces Turn your attention to the windshield, windows and mirrors. You can use a storebought glass cleaner on these surfaces and a lint-free cloth. Avoid products containing ammonia, which may damage tinting on windows.

Consider lingering odors If the interior of the car has an odor, the cabin air filter may need to be changed, or there may be water entering the vehicle somewhere and creating a musty smell. Seek out any problems and address. A car air freshener can further improve the interior smell.

A thorough deep cleaning can be done at least once a month to keep a vehicle’s interior fresh and clean. However, keeping up with interior cleaning and maintenance by doing small jobs regularly will reduce the need for routine deep cleaning. (MC) 

California Parks

Kings Canyon and Sequoia National parks

The parks are home to giant sequoia trees, including the General Sherman Tree which in terms of sheer volume is touted as the world’s largest standing tree, almost 300 feet tall and about 40 feet in diameter.

There is no way to describe the Giant Forest Grove without seeing it for yourself. It’s inspiring, motivating, humbling and also home to 8,000+ sequoias, the most in California.

Yosemite National Park

The “crown jewel” of California’s national parks Yosemite National Park is a World Heritage site. First protected in 1864, Yosemite is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, El Capitan and a vast wilderness area. To view a live webcam of Yosemite Falls, visit hyosemite.org/webcams/yosemite-falls.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes and numerous volcanoes. Its jagged peaks tell the story of its eruptive past.

Redwoods National Park

Home of the world’s tallest trees, this World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve protects nearly half of the world’s old growth redwoods, Pinnacles National Park

Around 23 million years ago, a series of volcanic eruptions shaped the landscape that is now Pinnacles National Park. The remnants of these ancient eruptions have formed a striking terrain of rocky spires and deep canyons.

SOLUTIONS

A Caution on Spending Cuts

There is a prevailing belief that government spending is excessively wasteful. Indeed, there may be some truth to this. However, eliminating preventative programs is reckless and could jeopardize American lives.

A few decades ago, government officials considered Medicare carotid endarterectomies (“roto-rooter” of the artery in the neck) to be too costly and unnecessary; as a result, they denied payment for this procedure. Within a year, statistics showed a significant increase in strokes among patients, which led to even greater costs for hospitalizations and rehabilitation for both the government and taxpayers.

Last month, the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program, which funds the vast majority of all federally funded cancer research nationwide, was cut with a chainsaw by 57%. One of the programs eliminated was research on lung cancer.

The most common cancer is lung cancer. From smokers to veterans, miners, and firefighters, funding for research for those diagnosed with lung cancer was chainsawed from funding.

Closer to home, Robin was diagnosed with terminal thyroid cancer in November 2022. Even after surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, it returned a year later, metastasizing to her lungs.

Biomarker analysis revealed a mutation in her cancer, and lung cancer research recently developed a “targeted” medication used experimentally on her type of cancer.

Because of this research, she has had six consecutive negative PET/CT scans showing “no evidence of disease.”

Irresponsible and haphazard cutting of funding harms many citizens. While we must be cautious with taxpayer money, we should avoid fostering an environment that jeopardizes lives that could be saved in the future.

ETHICALLY SPEAKING

Building on Trust

There is a plague in our land that the Centers for Disease Control have no way of handling. It is the plague of divisiveness, the attitude responsible for the growing division in our marriages, politics, and personal relationships. We’ve become a nation of oversensitive crybabies who will take our ball and go home over the most minor infraction. We seem poised to jump on anything we can use to undermine our opponents or criticize our friends. And it’s killing us.

and maintains a level of suspicion in the boardroom and the statehouse. And in marriage, where integrity no longer exists, love dies.

With the elections in the rearview mirror, we’re all hoping the two sides can work together for the benefit of everyone. But first, they will have to figure out how to build a foundation of trust. For that matter, we need to as well. In any relationship, the key to success will be the extent to which we can trust one another and face issues with the determination to work through rather than walk out. Here are some essential factors to building and maintaining a foundation of trust:

Communication: Someone has rightly said, “Communication breeds trust; lack of communication tends to breed suspicion.” We tend to think the worst when we don’t hear what’s going on. It’s human nature. To remedy this, we have to talk and listen. And then, we have to repeat what we think we’ve heard to ensure communication has happened. Communication isn’t just telling; it is a process by which all parties involved come to the same understanding. To build trust, communicate directly and often, and focus not so much on being understood as on destroying the possibility of being misunderstood.

Integrity: Nothing breaks down trust like deceit and an inconsistent morality. While it may take time to build confidence, it only takes a moment to demolish it. If you can’t keep your word in politics and business, you shouldn’t keep your job, period. It is the lack of trustworthiness that both creates

Respect: In every relationship, mistakes will be made, tempers lost, and questions raised. When there is no mutual respect, the darts will start to fly in those moments. However, in relationships that work, respect for one another’s position can be the bond that holds us together while we fall in and out of agreement. Respect is the intentional decision to give someone the benefit of the doubt, to recognize they may be having a bad day or are feeling pressure from other sources we know nothing about. Respect means calling a mental time-out and letting the situation settle before lashing out in a manner that will significantly harm the relationship.

Patience: I have found, over the years, that waiting to respond in a tense situation could have saved me both embarrassment and the hard work of repairing the relationship. When something seems out of joint, three words have come in handy: “Help me understand …” Most conflicts will significantly benefit from an infusion of patience. This is especially true where the differences stem from misunderstandings, third-party gossip, or personal feelings of disrespect. First, seek clarification and mutual understanding. Then, proceed judiciously to repair the breech and move forward beneficially.

Of all the political and relational assets available today, nothing trumps trust. Without it, we’re a nation of cynical individuals fighting to make our way. But with it, we can beat the odds and celebrate some real progress in the coming years.
