Building A

It is time to saddle up, dust off your Stetson and head over to Old Town Newhall to celebrate a weekend of cowboy culture at the 29th Annual Cowboy Festival at William S. Hart Park.

The event will feature three stages of free entertainment, more than 15 entertainers, food, vendors and activities.

Don’t miss legendary trick roper David Thornbury lassoing guests and demonstrating fancy rope tricks. Thornbury has been thrilling Cowboy Festival fans for more than 20 years.

“At four years old I had a rope in my hand,” Thornbury said. “This is the way I grew up and nothing has changed.” Thornbury will be joined by his grandson.

Casey Miller, city of Santa Clarita events supervisor, said the Cowboy Festival will continue to offer “tried and true” favorites with a few new experiences.

“We want people to feel as if they are stepping into the Old West with living history displays that showcase cowboy life. The blacksmiths will do demonstrations throughout the day and Pioneer Corner is where guests can engage in hands-on activities like candle dipping and panning for gold,” Miller said.

Horseshoe Honky Tonk, Watering Hole

“We have line dancing throughout the day and we also have our Watering Hole where guests can cool off with a cold beer from Lucky Luke our official brewery of the festival,” said Miller.

The Horseshoe Honky Tonk features the Bootscoot Bosses Line Dance Crew leading line dancing lessons in the afternoons.

Miller said her “can’t miss” event at the Cowboy Festival is the “Dancing Into the Dusk” late-night line dancing which offers a DJ spinning top country mixes. Line dance instruction will be available throughout the night. Lucky Luke Brewing will be serving beer, wine and seltzers. Grab a bite to eat from the food trucks.

“Dancing Into the Dusk,” Saturday, April 12, 7-10 p.m. Tickets: $10. Visit cowboyfestival.org.

Games, Activities

“We try to embody that Wild West action at the festival where people can participate. We have lassoing, mechanical bull riding, archery and axe throwing,” said Miller. “New this year are some added family-friendly activities included in our Craft Corral, including pinwheels and paper bag puppets. Those are some fun keepsakes from the festival.”

like candle making, wool spinning, leather stamping and gold panning. This interactive space lets you step into the shoes of early settlers and try your hand at old-time skills.

SCV History Center, Hart Barnyard

The Santa Clarita Valley History Center, which features the Whistle Stop Stage, will also have historic buildings open during the festival.

“The stage is nestled between the locomotive and the historic buildings,” said Miller. “The History Center is the perfect backdrop for our festival.”

The Hart Barnyard will also be open offering guests a chance to visit with the animals.

Food, Vendors

Old fashioned soda, Mexican dishes, BBQ and the festival favorite, Dutch oven peach cobbler are on the menu at the Cowboy Festival, said Miller.

“There are these glazed almonds that are just so delicious,” she said. “When they start roasting these almonds the aroma is wonderful.”

Food vendors include Sausage King, Wild Bill’s Olde Fashion Soda Pop Co., Carter’s Smoked BBQ, Maria’s Catering Mexican Food and Original Kettle Corn, bUONgUSTO Italian Ice, Rhinos Glazed Almonds, The Crazy Cucumber, Sisi Cakes, Far East Cowboys, The Royal Womb (The Royal Bites), Taste of Soul on Wheels, The Flossy Lady, Popn’ Mama, AV Cryo Candy, SCV Rotary Club Peach Cobbler, Rivers End BBQ and Pub and Unforgettable Lemonade LLC.

Benefits of being physically active.

walk isn’t just good for your body; it’s a simple, powerful way to care for your mind and soul. Physical activity, like walking, reduces stress, boosts mood and promotes overall well-being. Yet physical activity levels in the United States continue to decline, a trend threatening both mental and physical health.

Less than half of adults and fewer than one in five children in the U.S. get the recommended amount of physical activity needed for heart health, according to the American Heart Association’s 2025 Heart & Stroke Statistical Update.

National recommendations call for children to get at least one hour of physical activity each day, but the latest statistics show less than 19% of children in the U.S. achieve that target. Meanwhile, less than half of adults get the recommended 150 minutes or more of weekly physical activity.

What’s more, according to data from a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, one in four U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health.

For decades, the American Heart Association has championed the importance of physical activity in communities across the country through events like National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 2. These tips and information can help you understand how a brisk walk can make a world of difference for heart health and mental clarity.

Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy.

The physical health benefits may be obvious, but research suggests physical activity can also help bring more joy to your life. According to the 2019 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, people who get the recommended amount of physical activity are less likely to experience depression.

Regular physical activity enhances your mood, sharpens your mind, improves sleep and boosts overall well-being, all while reducing the risk of disease and depression and increasing both the quality and longevity of life.

Make an extra effort to increase your physical activity, particularly since April 2 is National Walking Day.

How to Be More Physically Active

Exercise as simple as a brisk walk can put a major spring in your step. It can even energize you to finish other tasks at hand, whether it’s cooking or running errands. Give your daily physical activity level a boost with these tips:

• Exercising outdoors is a great way to get moving. Spending time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress, promote a sense of belonging and improve mood. It’s even better if you can enjoy the sunshine outside, which can improve mood, boost your immunity and help you get some vitamin D.

• Invite a family member or friend along with you. It’s good for them, it’s good for you and it’s good company all around.

• Instead of wondering if you’ll move today, explore how you’ll move. A walk, a dance or a stretch all count.

Getting Pets Involved

Pets are part of your family, and they can help you get healthy together. Pets provide a fun reason to spend more time outside and get the exercise needed to reduce the risk of disease later in life.

Getting moving along with your pet adds more exercise to your routine, which means living longer, reducing risk of dying from heart attack or stroke, reducing risk of diabetes, reducing stress and even boosting your overall happiness and well-being.

Exercising with your pet can also mean enjoying more socializing. You may find yourself meeting other dog owners in your area on a walk or at the dog park.

How to Protect Your Pet’s Dental Health

Like humans, pets’ oral hygiene plays an important role in their overall health and quality of life. Common conditions like plaque buildup, tartar and bad breath can escalate to serious health conditions if untreated.

In fact, by the age of three, 80% of pets experience some form of dental health issue, and the risk only increases as they age. However, for many pet owners, taking care of their fourlegged friends’ oral health is a more difficult habit to maintain than their own daily brushing and flossing routine.

Many veterinarians recommend regular brushing for pets, and a wide array of treats and meal additives complement brushing to help support your pet’s oral health.

Protecting your pet’s oral health begins by talking with your veterinarian, who can provide recommendations tailored to your pet’s specific needs. With that guidance, you can start comparison shopping and reading labels so you can identify quality products. Remember you’re likely to find the greatest success by introducing oral health products as part of your pet’s daily routine early on.

Certifications for Trust and Quality

Products that meet high standards are eligible for certifications that assure consumers about their quality and efficacy. For example, the Veterinary Oral Health Council is an independent organization that evaluates pet dental products. Their Seal of Acceptance is awarded to products that meet strict standards for controlling plaque and tartar. You can find the seal on packaging as an easy visual indication of the product’s quality standards.

Natural, Effective Ingredients

Look for products that prioritize safety and health by offering natural, clinically proven ingredients and no artificial additives or chemicals. Seaweed (or kelp) is a preferred ingredient because it contains minerals and enzymes that help reduce plaque and prevent bacteria.

You can find 100% natural and organic kelp in products like ProDen PlaqueOff®, which includes A.N ProDen®, a kelp ingredient sustainably harvested from specially selected locations in the pristine North Atlantic waters off the Scandinavian coastline.

manufacturer adheres to environmentally friendly practices and safe ingredient sourcing, which means the product is not only good for pets but also for the planet. This may be evident in certifications or special icons on the packaging, through information about sustainably harvested ingredients or with packaging that itself is environmentally responsible.

Tailoring to Individual Pets

Processed through a specialized method in extreme environmental conditions, it attains peak quality and effectiveness, ensuring safety and health for your pet.

Sustainable Practices

Another detail you can gather from the product’s packaging is whether a product

Different pets have different needs based on age, size, breed and oral health status. Selecting the right product may also be complicated by your pet’s allergies or picky eating habits.

You can find a variety of ingestible options, including powders, chews or bones like those offered by ProDen PlaqueOff®, to use in conjunction with daily brushing.

Powder Ideal for a seamless addition to your pet’s diet, this is the most economical choice, particularly for longterm use. It’s especially suitable for younger pets as a preventive measure,

given its longevity and cost-effectiveness.

Chews For those looking for an easy-to-administer option that doubles as a reward, chews are the way to go. Additionally, for older pets or those with missing teeth, soft chews can offer a gentle yet effective way to maintain oral health. They’re a convenient choice for pet owners to give as a daily dose without the need for measuring or mixing.

Bones Designed not only to satisfy your dog’s natural chewing instincts but also to aid in dental care, bones are a perfect option for pet parents whose dogs prefer a longer-lasting treat. Bones come in a variety of flavors and sizes, catering to both large and small breeds, making them a versatile way to help keep your dog’s teeth clean and their breath fresh.

A ‘Well-Filmed Period Piece’ about New York Crime Bosses

‘The Alto Knights’

 (out of four)

Warner Bros. presents a film directed by Barry Levinson and written by Nicholas Pileggi. Rated R. In theaters.

The last time I saw the Rolling Stones in concert was in June of 2019 at Soldier Field as part of their No Filter Tour, and the great thing about it was they were THE ROLLING STONES — as vibrant and brilliant and soul-stirring as they’ve ever been. The same could be said for the performances by the now 81-year-old Robert De Niro in last month’s Netflix limited series “Zero Day” and in the feature film “The Alto Knights,”

which has De Niro creating two distinct characters in a dual role. In both the TV series and the movie, De Niro isn’t doing some glorified cameo or final-curtain cutesy grandpa role; he’s in his full Bobby D glory, reminding us once again why he’s in the upper stratosphere of great actors of this or any other era.

Sunday-Thursday, March 23-27, 2025

“The Alto Knights” is at times curiously muted for a crime drama and doesn’t match the greatness of previous De Niro gangster films such as “Mean Streets,” “Once Upon a Time in America,” “Goodfellas,” “Casino” and “The Irishman.” Still, with a heavyweight resume that includes not only De Niro but director Barry Levinson (“Rain Man,” “Bugsy,” “Wag the Dog”) and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi (co-writer of “Goodfellas” and “Ca-

sino”), this is a substantial and wellfilmed period piece about 20th-century New York crime bosses whose fortunes were dipped in blood — and whose feuds were petty and violent and led to their undoing.

De Niro plays Luciano crime family boss Frank Costello as a pragmatic businessman who by the 1950s was a well-known figure in New York society, hosting high-profile charitable endeavors, always with his wife, Bobbie (Debra Messing), by his side. Through tricks of makeup and hair and what appears to be a bit of digital wizardry, De Niro’s co-lead in the film is … Robert De Niro, as Costello’s lifelong friend Vito Genovese.

A long-simmering feud between the two led to Genovese ordering the bumbling sociopath Vincent Gigante (Cosmo Jarvis from “Shogun”) to gun down Costello. After the hit is botched, “The Alto Knights” becomes an extended serio-comic set piece, with seamless editing that allows for De Niro as Costello and De Niro as Genovese to occasionally sit across from one another as they try — and fail — to resolve their differences.

Kathrine Narducci gives a firecracker of a performance as Genovese’s

wife, Anna, who ran gay nightclubs in New York and eventually testified against Genovese in open court, to the delight of the press. Michael Rispoli is a standout as Albert Anastasia, a crime boss who is fiercely loyal to Costello.

Nearly all of the major events depicted in “The Alto Knights” (named after the social club where Genovese held court) are based on recorded history, whether it’s the attempted hit on Costello, the disputes between Costello and Genovese, or the Apalachin Meeting in upstate New York between mob leaders from across the United States that was raided by New York State Police — the same meeting that serves as the opening sequence, narrated by De Niro, in “Analyze This.”

Mostly, though, this is about the twin performances of De Niro, who infuses Costello with a kind of avuncular charm, while Genovese has the fiery temper and paranoid fury to match Jake La Motta in “Raging Bull.” It’s a privilege to witness one of the best actors of all time, still at the top of his game. 

Where to Put a Microwave in a Small Kitchen

For those with compact kitchens, a common dilemma is the ideal placement of the microwave oven. When every inch of space counts, finding the perfect spot for this vital appliance can make all the difference.

Deciding where to put a traditional countertop microwave can result in your tiny kitchen feeling even more cramped than it already is. That’s where the sleek and space-saving solution of the drawer style microwave comes into play.

“In the quest for both functionality and style, the game-changing world of drawer style microwave ovens can transform your compact cooking haven into a sleek and efficient space.” says Peter Weedfald, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Sharp Home Electronics Company of America

Here are some of the major benefits of this style of microwave:

Undercounter elegance Drawer style microwaves are designed to fit seamlessly under your countertops, providing a streamlined and sophisticated look. Unlike traditional microwaves that can occupy valuable counter space, drawer style microwaves can blend effortlessly into your kitchen cabinetry, giving you a clutter-free cooking zone.

Ergonomic accessibility One of the standout features of this style microwave is the ergonomic design. Positioned at a convenient height, they reduce the need to reach or bend over, making them more accessible for users of all ages. Say goodbye to the hassle of lifting hot dishes from an overhead microwave. With the press of a button or a voice command (depending on the model), effortlessly slide out the drawer style oven and you’re all set!

Multi-functional marvels Drawer style microwave ovens often come with additional features. For example, select Sharp Microwave Drawer Ovens offer touchless operation, a concealed control panel and even integrated convection capabilities to enhance the functionality of your kitchen.

Seamless integration When it comes to creating a cohesive kitchen aesthetic, drawer style microwaves are the epitome of seamless integration. Available in various finishes and styles, these microwaves can complement your existing cabinetry, contributing to a polished and unified look.

So, where should you put your drawer style oven? According to Sharp Home Electronics Company of America, the original inventor, designer and

manufacturer of built-in drawer style microwave ovens, here are a few guidelines to consider:

• Adjacent to cooking zones. Strategically installing your drawer style microwave close to your range or oven encourages a smoother workflow and allows for you to transfer hot dishes easily while minimizing the risk of spills.

• Island installation. Incorporating a drawer style microwave into a kitchen island is a popular choice. This central location ensures accessibility from all sides, making it a convenient and accessible choice for various kitchen activities.

• Integrated design. If you’re undergoing a kitchen remodel, consult with your designer to integrate the drawer style microwave seamlessly into your cabinetry. This could not only maximize space but also enhance the overall aesthetics of your kitchen.

For more information about drawer style microwaves and other kitchen appliances, visit shop.sharpusa.com.

“Microwave drawer ovens, with their space-saving design and range of functional benefits, have redefined kitchen design. By incorporating a microwave drawer oven, you can create a functional and beautiful culinary space that defies the limitations of kitchen space,” says Weedfald. (SPT) 

Eating Healthy Even If You’re Always on the Move

Ahealthy diet pays numerous dividends. Such a diet can help people maintain a healthy weight, reduce their risk for various chronic conditions, including some diseases, and boost energy levels. The energy-boosting benefits of a nutritious diet might be especially appealing to busy professionals and provide the extra motivation they need to embrace healthy eating.

Busy professionals know it’s not always so easy to eat healthy. But here are some ways to eat healthy if you’re always on the move.

Plan ahead Meal planning is an effective way to eat healthy because it reduces the chances that adults will make impulsive dietary decisions without taking nutrition into account. Accord-

ing to Brown University Health, meal planning can save time and money. It also helps avoid dining out too often. That’s a benefit, as many restaurants, particularly fast food chains that tend to be valued for their ability to provide quick meals, often prepare meals that are high in fat, sugar and sodium.

Embrace crockpot cooking Slow cooking can help on-the-go professionals eat healthier because it allows them to prepare meals on weekends and then eat them throughout the week. That’s helpful for busy adults who don’t have time to prepare homemade nutritious meals on weeknights, when work schedules, kids’ extracurricular activities and other obligations tend to take precedence over healthy eating.

Learn to dine out healthy Many

restaurants offer a wide range of nutritious fare. Diners just need to know which options fit that criteria. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, veggie-based entrées or those with baked, broiled or grilled fish or skinless chicken are nutritious options when dining out. Johns Hopkins also urges diners to forgo traditionally greasy or oily options like cheese-covered enchiladas in favor of healthier alternatives like tacos featuring fish or grilled chicken.

Consider meal kits The market monitoring and research firm Statista notes that the meal kit delivery market has been growing rapidly in recent years. Research indicates the domestic market for meal kit delivery services was slightly less than $21 billion in 2022, a figure that forecasters project will

rise to around $65 billion by 2030. Such estimates underscore the growing popularity of the services. Though meal kit services vary, many offer the convenience busy professionals are looking for without compromising nutrition. Pre-portioned ingredients help meal kit subscribers avoid overeating, and most recipes are easily followed and result in meals made in considerably less time than more traditional means of cooking.

Busy professionals might feel as though they need to eat whatever is convenient and immediately accessible, even if the available options lack nutritional value. However, there are a host of ways for on-the-go adults to eat healthy even if they’re pressed for time. (MC) 

A Rundown on Scarifying Your Lawn for Better Growth

To those unfamiliar with lawn maintenance, the term “scarify” might sound like something horror movie directors hope to do to audiences who watch their films. But scarifying has nothing to do with frightening filmgoers, and everything to do with promoting a lush, green and healthy lawn.

What does it mean to scarify a lawn?

Scarifying a lawn involves the use of a scarifier to remove dead organic matter that can build up on a lawn over time. When such thatch develops and settles in on a lawn, it can hinder growth by blocking water and nutrients from reaching the soil.

Scarifying with a scarifier, or a rake in a smaller lawn or one where thatch buildup is not significant, can help to ensure a lawn can benefit from water and nutrients, such as those which are often found in fertilizers.

Is a scarifier necessary?

Lawn and garden tools make yard work easier, and a scarifier is no exception. Scarifiers range in price, but many effective machines are relatively inexpensive when compared to more costly machines like lawn mowers and aerators.

While a scarifier certainly can make dethatching easier, some homeowners might be able to get

by with a spring-tined rake. However, it’s less labor-intensive to forgo a rake and use a scarifier on larger properties. Are there additional reasons to scarify?

Thatch buildup also can promote the growth of moss, so scarifying can decrease the chances that healthy grass is pushed to the side by sponge-like moss that can quickly overtake a property.

Is there anything I should know about scarifying?

Scarifying has nothing to do with frightening filmgoers, and everything to do with promoting a lush, green and healthy lawn. (MC)

A lawn that has never before been scarified is likely to produce a substantial amount of thatch, which can be made up of old grass clippings, leaves and moss. Though many scarifiers come with attachable buckets that collect the thatch, such baskets tend to be rather small and fill up quickly, forcing frequent stopping that can add a considerable amount of time to the job. If possible, homeowners with lawns that have significant thatch buildup might want to scarify without the bucket attached. Doing so will leave lots of piles of dead organic matter strewn about the yard, but the job is likely to go more quickly if those heaps are gathered up with a rake after scarifying and then discarded.

Constant stopping to empty a small bucket filled with thatch will compromise efficency and that can be frustrating. Homeowners also should not expect their lawns to stun after a scarifying session. The lawn will likely look worse, but that’s only temporary. Once the dethatched lawn gets some water and fertilizer, the soil beneath will be more ready to receive

them, and the lawn will soon look much better.

Are all scarifiers the same?

Homeowners are urged to do their homework and read product reviews before choosing a scarifier. The majority of scarifiers now on the market are electric, so homeowners will need the ability to plug into a power source when using such products. They also will need to negotiate around the cord, which should be a lengthy extension designed for outdoor use. Homeowners with particularly large properties may want to purchase a gas-powered scarifier, but such products are harder to come by than their electric counterparts, and could be considerably more expensive as well.

When should I scarify?

Various lawn professionals recommend scarifying a lawn at least once per year, and springtime is a popular season to do so. Scarify prior to an initial fertilizer application so that does not block the lawn from getting the nutrients in the fertilizer. A second scarifying session may be necessary in fall.

Scarifying can be an important step in creating a stunning and healthy lawn. (MC) 

Purina does this by supporting farmers as they transition to regenerative agriculture practices to improve soil health and ultimately increase soil organic matter, which helps to sequester carbon.

Another way Purina cares for the environment is through their efforts to reduce water consumption in factories and continually assess process improvements throughout its business and manufacturing operations.

Every batch of pet food is carefully monitored to ensure that the correct proportions of ingredients are used, adhering to expert-developed recipes. My dog has cancer. What next?

Dear Paw’s Corner My Golden Retriever, “Jasmine,” was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. I’m devastated.

She seemed to tire easily, so I took her to the vet for a checkup, where they said her lymph nodes were enlarged. They did a biopsy to confirm that it was cancer. My question is, what now? The vet said she needs more tests, but I’m not sure what happens after.

— Grace T., Hartford, Connecticut

Dear Grace I’m glad you took Jasmine right to the vet, because even though the diagnosis is a serious one, she can start getting treatment that much sooner.

According to the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine,

lymphoma is sadly common in Golden Retrievers and other dog breeds. However, it can be treated, with chemotherapy as the primary therapy. Surgery might be recommended depending on the type of cancer.

Now that lymphoma has been confirmed through the biopsy, the next step is to determine how far the cancer has spread through Jasmine’s body. Several tests are done: blood tests, urinalysis, a bone marrow test, X-rays and sonograms. Some veterinary offices are equipped for these tests, but you may be referred to specialist care for more advanced testing. These tests

are essential for developing an appropriate treatment plan for your dog. If the vet has not yet followed up with next steps since the diagnosis was made, call and ask for more details and their recommendation. Most vets provide this information along with the diagnosis, so it’s worrisome that you don’t have a path forward. You can always select a different vet if you aren’t confident in the current one. Has your pet been treated for cancer? Tell me about the experience at ask@pawscorner.com. 

Subtle Signs Your Pet Might Have Cancer

Considerable progress has been made in understanding the spread and development of various forms of cancers. In fact, millions now go on to live long lives after successful treatments, even though much about the disease remains a mystery.

While cancers that affect humans garner substantial attention, the disease also can be diagnosed in pets. Pets can develop neoplasia, which involves the abnormal growth of cells or tissues in the body that form into a tumor, which can be benign or malignant. When malignant tumors are present, then the pet is considered to have cancer, says the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The National Cancer Institute says that while some of the signs that an animal is unwell are readily apparent, often cancer may produce only subtle symptoms that are challenging to distinguish and may overlap with other health issues. Here are some signs to watch out for.

Weight loss Unless a pet is on a specific weight loss regimen or has

increased exercise significantly, a sudden drop in weight could be a sign of cancer.

Appetite changes If appetite suddenly increases or decreases, that may be a red flag for cancer. Pay attention to the eating habits of your pets.

New growths or bumps The presence of new growths on a pet’s body should be checked by a vet. Not all lumps are cancerous, but pay attention to lumps that grow, don’t go away or change in shape.

Behavioral changes Pet owners get to know the dispositions of their companion animals. When a pet that is normally boisterous becomes lethargic, withdrawn or less playful, that could be a sign of illness.

Bathroom habit changes Pets struggling with urination or defecation or those exhibiting changes in urine or stool may be sick with cancer.

Unusual bleeding or discharge If abnormal bleeding from the nose, mouth or rectum is present, or if the animal has unusual discharge from the eyes or ears, that could be a warn-

ing sign for cancer.

The cause of most cancers in pets is not known and, therefore cannot be easily prevented. It is important to

keep up with routine well visits for pets so that vets can catch cancer at its earliest stage when it is the most treatable. (MC) 

Taking on New Hobbies

Retirement should be relaxing, not boring. In fact, taking on new hobbies can keep your mind sharp and body vital as you age. Here are five ways to stay active in your golden years:

Join a gym Joining a gym is one of the easiest ways to ensure you perform a mix of strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Doing both will help keep your bones and muscles strong and your heart and lungs fully functional. Don’t forget to add in yoga and stretching to promote balance and agility.

If a gym is out of reach, see what other nearby opportunities are available for working up a sweat. Many towns and cities offer free and budget-friendly, community-based exercise programming.

Play music There are numerous cognitive and emotional benefits associated with playing music. Whether you’re a beginner just looking to pick up the basics or a seasoned musician with the hopes of performing in public, you can equip yourself to sound amazing with a high-quality instrument like the CT-S1-76 keyboard from Casio. Its 76 full-size keys and upgraded 13watt bass-reflex stereo speaker system with surround effect lend it incredible sound quality and a dynamic playing experience, while its sleek, portable design makes it a joy to play anytime, anywhere.

In addition to remotely controlling the CT-S1-76, you can also use the Casio Music Space app to learn to play your favorite songs with downloadable MIDI files, interact with PDF scores, and much more.

Start a book club It’s always more fun to read books when you can dis-

cuss them with friends. From tackling the classics, to diving into non-fiction works that will challenge your perspective, to enjoying some easy, breezy beach reads, it’s important that the other members of the group have the same reading goals as you. So do a little leg work in advance to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Number crunch You don’t have to be in school to take up math as a hobby. There are plenty of recreational mathematicians of all ages who enjoy crunching numbers to work puzzles, compete in games, and uncover patterns in the real world. To get into your mathematical groove and to support your hobby, use a graphing calculator such as the fx-9750GIII from Casio. Its over 2,900 functions, including random number generation, metric conversion and object measurement, make it a great tool for any mathematical project.

Learn a language Learning a new language not only creates new neural pathways in the brain, it can be just the motivational ticket you need to finally visit that bucket list destination you’ve been dreaming of. While formal lessons are great, you can help ensure your skills truly progress through conversation. Lean on services like Tandem to connect with a language partner.

By taking on new hobbies and expanding your interests, you can carve out a retirement that is active, adventurous and good for your body, mind and soul. (SPT) 

QIs it true that Lucy Hale was almost Hannah Montana? Can she sing?

— K.W.

AYes, Lucy Hale, who is best known for her role on the teen drama series “Pretty Little Liars,” is a vocalist as well as an actress. She won “American Juniors,” a children’s spinoff of “American Idol,” and she’s also released several singles over the years. She also submitted a taped audition for the lead role in the Disney series “Hannah Montana,” but the role eventually went to Miley Cyrus. She did, however, end up guest-starring on another teen sitcom “Drake & Josh.” Hale says despite losing out on the role that made Cyrus a star, she is grateful for the experience of auditioning, since it made her want to become an actress.

QI was upset to learn that “FBI: International” has been canceled. Is there a chance that Jesse Soffer could return to “Chicago P.D.” now? I hope so.

— N.E.

ACBS recently announced the cancellation of not only “FBI: International” but another spin-off, “FBI: Most Wanted.” While the “FBI” franchise might not be as popular as NBC’s “Chicago,” it’s still a popular commodity for the network, which is why they’re launching a new spin-off to fill the void of both procedurals.

According to Screen Rant, “‘FBI: CIA’ will involve the two named agencies cooperating together to prevent acts of domestic terrorism” with two main characters — one from each agency. It will mostly be set in New York City. While it’s not officially greenlit for the fall schedule, “FBI: CIA” is expected to be premiering then. In fact, the show will first air this spring as a “back-door pilot” during “FBI,” which is the original flagship series that started it all. “FBI” is currently in its seventh season on CBS and airs on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET.

As far as the cast of the new spinoff, no one has been announced, but fans are hopeful that some of their favorite cast members from both “International” and “Most Wanted” will pop up permanently or in guest appearances.

Yes, it’s possible Soffer could return to “Chicago P.D.” in the role he played for 10 seasons. He chose to leave in 2022 to take on new acting challenges,

which led him to “FBI: International.” Perhaps he’ll take a break before his next project, wherever it shall be.

QWhat’s the latest on Ted Lasso returning? Is it officially coming back for another season?

AYes, Jason Sudeikis, who plays the titular role of the eternally optimistic football coach, has made it official! “Ted Lasso” will be back on Apple TV+ for a fourth season. The announcement arrives a full two years since the airing of what was presumed to be the series finale. The actor recently announced on the Kelce Brothers’ “New Heights” podcast that Ted would be coaching a women’s football team this time.

returnees we know for certain in this early stage of development are Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy) and Jeremy Swift (Higgins). 

SOLUTIONS

Conspiracy Theories

As I am writing this letter, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is rescuing the two astronauts who were abandoned by Joe Biden. In reality, he probably had no idea they were even stranded.

At the same time, President Donald Trump is negotiating peace in the Russia/Ukraine war. Biden’s solution to that problem was, “Give them as much as they need for as long as it takes.”

And still, Jonathan Kraut is given the opportunity to write a column (March 18) that consists entirely of conspiracy theories, lies and half-truths.

What I can’t forgive are his last three lines: “Be horrified. Democracy is ending. War may be near.”

I am disappointed that The Signal allowed this to be published. This is the insane, incendiary language that inspires lunatics to set fire to Tesla dealerships, automobiles and charging stations. This is the same language that Hamas supporters use to justify their antisemitic, anti-American, pro-terrorist rhetoric.

If any of that illegal and un-American behavior comes to the Santa Clarita Valley, Mr. Kraut, it is on you.

A Theory on Secular Liberals

If government is as close to God as a secular worldview allows, and the devil — Donald Trump — is in control of that god, it’s no wonder secular liberals are beside themselves.

ETHICALLY SPEAKING

Courage Worth Honoring

Recently, I finished a great book recounting the exploits of Dog Company, the Army Rangers who led the assault up the cliffs on D-Day, and accomplished the invasion’s most demanding mission. Their story is one of grit, strength and great sacrifice, and it reminded me that America once had a culture of honor.

It is devastating to realize how far we have fallen as we read and listen to today’s news. We no longer make heroes of those who shoulder the burdens of life and go on resolutely running the race set before them. We no longer count it honorable to persevere through the slights and disappointments of life with a tough-skin attitude. We no longer teach our children the reality that others will not always appreciate their point of view and that insults, criticism, and disagreement are part and parcel of living in this chaotic world, and they had better learn how to let things bounce off them.

Simply put, we’ve stopped believing it is better to be controlled by who we are and what we believe than to forever respond with outrage to every little grievance that hits us.

We’ve given up a culture of honor to become a society of victims. While we used to be people who soldiered on through the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, we now applaud those who cry out as victims against anything that hurts, disappoints, or offends them.

We’ve become so soft, sensitive, and emotionally sunburned that the cries and whining of the offended have become our battle song. Gone are the days when we knew we were never promised a rose garden and understood the necessity of being tough enough to persevere through life’s inevitable challenges. But not today. Today, the most pronounced right many hold and fight for is the right never to be offended, slighted, hurt, or ignored.

Our dreadful slide into this silly narcissistic shallowness of character began years ago when we insisted that self-esteem precedes accomplishment. I remember when my children were in elementary school, every

child got an award and was told they were outstanding. Generation after generation grew up believing they were the center of a universe that was now responsible for making sure they never had to encounter any pain or in any way be disadvantaged or offended. And now we are reaping the soul-weakening results of that ill-conceived philosophy.

Are there people in our world who are victims and need to be helped? Of course, the burgeoning field of pseudo-victims is a huge threat to them. The societal power that once was delegated to true victims who persevered through their trials with grace and honor is now being co-opted by those who manufacture offenses and masquerade as the wrongly wounded.

At the bottom of our surging society of victimhood is an ethical breach. Those who genuinely suffer should be helped toward restoration. But, sadly, now victimhood has become the stuff of reparation. To be offended and claim suffering today can be the means to money, power, and status, regardless of how sincere the claim may be.

As I read “Dog Company” by Patrick D. O’Donnell, I felt proud that America had produced such a fine group of courageous, humble men. I also had to fight the dread that we no longer do so. But all is not lost ... yet. I hope that this era of pseudo-victimhood will be short-lived. I continue to believe rank-and-file Americans understand that one key to a healthy society is the ability of individuals to flush the small stuff, bear the daily onslaught of circumstance courageously, and, above all, replace the selfish desire to gain from others’ mistakes with a passionate desire fix our own. Call me idealistic, if you will, but history is on my side. Over time, strong character, honesty, courage and selflessness almost always win out. Let’s hope the trend continues.
