Canyon High’s Grit Pays off at Graduation By Trevor Morgan Signal Staff Writer

tories of perseverance, triumph through tragedy, and sheer hard work made up many of the experiences students shared during Canyon High School’s graduation ceremony on June 2. Like many graduation ceremonies, students shared thankful messages to their friends, families, and teachers before the ceremony began. But during her welcome address, Principal Shellie Holcombe said her speech was “Gonna be a little different than in years past.” “Recently, I had the privilege of meeting with some of our senior students who shared inspiring messages about their unique high school experiences,” said Holcombe. “So tonight I want to share their important heartfelt words.” Some of these heartfelt words were written by Derek Barrios, who said that earning his diploma had a much larger meaning to him. “This diploma represents an education system that ensures all young people here in Santa Clarita, regardless of privilege, have access to a first-rate education and exposure to the diverse beliefs and traditions that drive an ever-more complex world See CANYON, page 9

MY FAMILY / HISTORY / FUTURE Canyon Country Designer’s Show is Held at Her Father’s Namesake — The Takeda Science Center By Trevor Morgan Signal Staff Writer

rts and sciences are usually thought of as being completely separate, especially at the collegiate level. However, a recent joint event held in the Don Takeda Science Center at College of the Canyons’ Canyon Country campus, put an “A” (art) in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), creating STEAM. The event featured a microbiology-themed scavenger hunt with an art exhibit by artist Phoebe Takeda. If Phoebe’s last name rings a bell, that’s because her father, Don Takeda, is the building’s namesake and is also a long-time science professor at COC. The event was a testament of the Takeda family, celebrating not only the successes of Don’s contributions to science and education but also Phoebe’s successes in telling the stories of her family through her art. Ryan Thuele, vice president of COC’s Canyon Country campus, said having the duo highlighted at this event was a perfect metaphor for what COC is trying to accomplish. “We were very excited tonight to showcase… Phoebe Takeda, who was someone with an artistic flair, but also, you know, raised by and inculcated in science by the amazing Dr. Don Takeda,” said Thuele. “And so we thought tonight would be a lovely opportunity to showcase her artistic side concurrently with some of our students who are also showcasing what they’ve learned in the classrooms.” Don called the entire experience an honor, saying that incorporating art into STEM, especially his daughter’s, is critical to the department’s success. “You can’t just be science alone… to make things much more full, you have to have the arts, you have to have the arts and humanities,” said Takeda. “And I’m glad that she finished up with this exhibit of not only the fashion design, but also the meaning behind her work.” Phoebe used her background in fashion design and art to create a body of work that focuses on personal narratives and social issues. “My Family/ History/Future” brings to light the experiences of her family following Executive Order 9066, which forced more than 100,000 Japanese-Americans into internment camps during World War II. “That certainly is something that people have to be aware of and continually stay on top of,” said Don. “So, you know, this is really important for me to see her do this, and I’m very proud to be able to present this here.” See TAKEDA, page 22

Canyon Country’s Warmuth Honey House
he Honey House at 17262 Sierra Highway — as of 2005, part of College of the Canyons’ Canyon Country campus — was built in 1954 by James Willis Dyer (19101987) to process honey produced at his family ranch at Vasquez Rocks, next door to the Asher property. Born in San Fernando, Dyer moved in the 1930s to his his uncle’s Ritter Ranch in the Leona Valley, where he got his first taste of honey. He then moved to Agua Dulce and in 1950, with bees he bought from his uncle, started his own apiary business. Dyer had worked for the county road department and produced honey to supplement his income, but it eventually became his sole source of income, according to his daughter Letty (Dyer) Foote. The bees fed on the local sage, buckwheat, greasewood and juniper, allowing Dyer to produce several varieties of honey. County assessor records list the two-story brick Honey House at 3,512 square feet with two bathrooms. On the same 2.18-acre parcel, on the hill overlooking the house, was a 942-square-foot cabin (2+1) built in 1937. Set into the hillside behind the Honey House is a subterranean cellar where honey was kept cool. Known as the Dyer Honey House until the 1960s when it was sold to another family of beekeepers, Joe and Margaret Warmuth (at which time it became the Warmuth Honey House), the machinery in the building could process up to 3,000 honeycombs at a time. Extracting machines on the second floor spun out the honey, which was then conveyed through pipes to tanks on the ground floor. It was packaged in jars of various sizes and sold to nationwide distributors and directly to the public. It was a popular stop for travelers on the Mint Canyon road. In 1986, Margaret Warmuth (1925-2006) converted the former sales office into a small “Honey & Bee Museum,” and in its final years, the proprietors opened a custom leather shop in the building and made saddles. The Warmuth family (Estate of
Margaret Warmuth) sold the property to the Santa Clarita Community College District for $749,000 on April 21, 2005 (grant deed recorded June 3). The college’s general contractor, Lundgren Management Corp., used it as a construction office for the new campus.

and a chance to experience the joy of learning,” said Holcombe reading Barrios’ words. As promised, Holcombe did not have a formal or lengthy welcome address but instead read the statements of 10 graduating seniors. She did, however, make a quick note as she finished. “Thank you, seniors, for those beautiful messages that shines a light on a very challenging past four years. You have provided us with hope, insight, and a determined look forward,” said Holcombe. Following Holcombe’s address came the first student speaker, valedictorian James Morrison. Morrison took the opportunity to thank individual teachers, family and staff. After Morrison’s speech came the senior speaker Nina Canepa. Canepa took the opportunity to remind her classmates of the accomplishments they had made and that they should take pride in their determination. “While facing unexpected circumstances, we made a community out of love and respect,” said Canepa. “We spoke up, we fought with bravery and we united despite our race, gender and ethnicity, we de-stigmatized mental health with programs like the Wellness Center and classes like social and emotional learning.” In addition to speeches, Canyon High School’s senior choral members performed a harmonious rendition of Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of your Life),” which was arranged by Mike Taylor and directed by Kelly Caswell. A total of 452 students graduated at the ceremony, with approximately 80 who made honors. Following the conferring of diplomas, students shared what they overcame to get to this point. For Itay Hazan it was traveling over 7,000 miles and learning a new language. “I moved here seven years ago… It’s like, new language, everything [is] new and sometimes I like, didn’t know how to react,” said Hazan “This is an amazing feeling, I’m the first one in my family to graduate…like in America, like in the movies. So my family’s proud.”

Barber Shop Forced to Relocate After 53 years By Michael Picarella Signal Staff Writer
C
anyon Country Barber Shop on Soledad Canyon Road celebrated its 53rd anniversary on Friday, June 10. It’ll close its doors on Saturday. Bob Ruiz, 79, who opened the place on June 10, 1969, isn’t happy about shutting the doors. He’s not sad, either. His daughter, Anita Ruiz, who’s been cutting hair there since February 1990, said her dad’s making the best of things and looking up, as he’ll continue cutting hair at a new barber shop closer to his longtime home in Piru once they move out to make way for new construction. “The city gave the landlord permission to build apartments,” she told The Signal. “The plot’s been for sale for a while … In January, we got the paper that said we had to be out by the end of June.” Ruiz said all the other tenants in the shopping center had already moved out. “We’re the last ones here,” she added. “Because my dad wanted to make the 53rd anniversary.” However, once Ruiz and her dad make the move to Piru, they’ll have a much shorter commute. “We go through 32 stop lights to get here,” Ruiz said. “Well, 31. They’re putting another one in at Val Verde that hasn’t been turned on.” And while she’s glad her dad won’t be driving 22 miles to work any longer, she still doesn’t want him to stop working. “He’s in good shape,” she said. “If he were to stop, I don’t know what’s going to happen.” But she guesses he isn’t going to stop cutting hair anytime soon. She said her dad loves cutting hair and that he’d cut hair “eight days a week if he could.” And since her mom died in February, Ruiz said working is all the more important to her dad. Ruiz will continue barbering as well, she added, at least as long as her dad is still doing it. Truth be told, though, despite being a barber for more than 30 years, she never wanted to do it to begin with. “Cutting hair is not my passion,” she said. “I’m a ‘daddy’s girl.’ I follow my dad. I live with my dad again right now.”
Robert Ruiz, owner of Bob’s Canyon Canyon Country Barbershop, will be moving after 53 years at their location in Canyon Country. PHOTO BY DAN WATSON / THE SIGNAL
As for the customers, some have been getting their haircuts there for 50 years, Ruiz said. Former U.S. Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon and former Santa Clarita Councilman Bob Kellar were longtime regulars. “I had been going there for literally, I don’t know, 20 or 30 years,” Kellar told The Signal. “You know what I like about it? You could go in there and it was just like when I was a kid — everybody would say hi, you’d get a good haircut, and Bob has just been, as far as I’m concerned, a fixture here … It’s just been a great, great place to go and get your hair cut. Nothing fancy. Just go get a haircut and get out the door. So, God bless Bob and I wish him well. I’m going to miss him and his staff, that’s for sure. And I know a lot of other people are going to miss them as well.” Another loyal customer until his death in 1998 was cowboy star and Old Town Newhall Walk of Western Stars honoree Montie Montana. A little coincidence: Montana was born on the same exact day the barber shop opened — June 10 — only 59 years earlier. Many customers have told Ruiz and her dad that they’re going to travel with them to the new shop in Piru. But Ruiz said she wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t make the trip since there are so many barber shops these days that are much closer. She thinks the boom in barber shops is due to the fact that a barber’s license requires so much less. “If you get your license now,” she said, “you’re
not required to do a shave. This is just an old school barber shop — we shave, we still give scalp massages.” And they’re closed on Sundays and Mondays, Ruiz added, just like those old barber shops many remember as kids. That old-time barbering will travel with them to Piru as soon as they close up shop and get all the paperwork in order for the new one, Ruiz said. “This opportunity happened to my dad,” she continued, “and now he’s going to go and change it around and make it better. He’ll now be closer to home, doing what he loves. But he just wants to die behind the chair. Either way, I can’t stop him. He’s a grown-ass man.” Ruiz’s dad didn’t have much to say about the matter, not for the newspaper, anyway. Ruiz said it’s because he gets emotional. But she told The Signal that he said barbering is life to him. And, getting a bit choked up herself, added that working at the Canyon Country shop has brought him 53 years of joy. He’s no doubt sad to be leaving so many good customers behind, Ruiz said, but that he’ll be taking all the memories with him to Piru. “He wants to thank everyone for their patronage,” Ruiz continued. “If for some reason they can’t find a new barber to replace him or are not happy, he’ll be in Piru waiting for them.” Bob’s Piru Barber Shop will be located at 3956 Center Street in the town of Piru. You can call using the same number (661) 252-9888.

parent-approved playgrounds By Michele E. Buttelman Signal Staff Writer
E
very parent has “those” days when the kids need to get out of the house to play and run off excess energy. Parents in Santa Clarita are lucky to have a bounty of parks with playgrounds offering children myriad opportunities to climb, swing, slide and “just be kids.” Santa Clarita Parks Manager Susan Nelson said the city takes children’s fun and safety seriously. “We place a high value on giving everyone in the city access to recreational opportunities, especially the youth,” she said. “We want to give them playgrounds that are inviting, intriguing and offer different play elements for different ages and interests. Some kids like slides, some like swings, we want to offer a multitude of play elements.” For Lucy Espinoza, a Canyon Country mother of two young boys, the playgrounds offer her kids a chance to get outside and engage in boisterous play. “They have a lot of energy,” said Espinoza. “They beg me every day to take them to the playground.” Espinoza said the playgrounds at Canyon Country Park and the new Canyon Country Community Center are within walking distance. “It’s fun because they can have a choice of where to play,” she said. “I like that the playgrounds are very clean and new. Having shade lets them play longer when it’s hot.”
Inclusive Playgrounds
One of the latest innovations in playground design is the concept of inclusiveness and accessibility. Santa Clarita opened up its first fully inclusive play area at the Canyon Country Park in January 2020. A second inclusive playground should break ground in the fall at West Creek Park and open in early 2023. “As we renovate older playgrounds, we do look for opportunities to enhance playgrounds with inclusive elements,” said Nelson. Nelson said inclusive elements can be used by children with different abilities. “Play panels that can be reached by someone using a wheelchair is an example, and the roller slide at Canyon Country Park that has individual rollers in it,” she said. “There are also molded swings that provide support for sitting up.”
Shade and Character
Nelson said conscious effort goes into giving each playground its own identity and unique character. “We are trying to highlight a different or unique feature with each playground as we renovate,” said Nelson. “Duane Harte playground has a woodsy theme, it has logs and animal footprints in the resilient surfacing so it has a unique feel to it. Pacific Crest has really tall slides, some people call it Slide Park.” Nelson said at Vista Canyon the playground features musical elements. “We included chimes, bells and drum elements, which makes it
unique,” she said. “We thought it was fun to have more music elements at that site.” With triple-digit summer temperatures on the way, Santa Clarita is also working to provide more shade for playgrounds as well. “It gets very hot here in the summer months so there has been a concerted effort to have substantial shade structures put over the playgrounds that offer shelter from the sun,” said Nelson. “We don’t have shade at all the playgrounds yet, but we are certainly working toward that goal.”

Escribano Builds Her Legacy ‘Brick by Brick’
Local 14-year-old Isabella “Jiggy” Escribano is already a viral sensation, but will now get to showcase her basketball skills at the international level. PHOTO BY CHRIS TORRES / THE SIGNAL By Justin Vigil-Zuniga Signal Sports Writer
E
scribano will play for the Mexico 15U team in the upcoming FIBA U15 Centrobasket games in Puerto Rico. She was the youngest to make the team at 13 years old at the time. However, the teenager is much more than just a basketball player. At her young age, Escribano has developed a major clothing brand, played under Kobe Bryant on “Team Mamba,” shot several major commercials/webisodes and worked with NBA legends — all before playing a minute of high school basketball. Bryant taught Escribano more than she could have imagined, including the discipline to avoid getting frustrated after mistakes. Bryant would tell her, “Brick by brick, you aren’t going to build your house in one day.” Escribano has taken this, among other Bryant quotes, into all aspects of her life. The brand “Break the Curse” is a WNBA-supporting brand that has been sparked in the WNBA recently leading to dozens of stars. The brand has also been sported by NBA players like Chris Paul and Jordan Clarkson. Escribano didn’t see a lot of options in the WNBA store for sporting some of her favorite athletes. She took it upon herself to create what she and unknowingly a ton of others desired most, making the brand a hit. “We wanted to build something for people that love the WNBA,” said Escribano. “I really support and love the WNBA, but when I want to wear something from the WNBA, there’s
only a certain amount of options, but for the NBA, there’s tons.” Escribano’s latest release is the “We are BG” line, with apparel supporting getting incarcerated WNBA star Britney Griner home from Russia through the Phoenix Rescue Mission. The young star is attempting to work with the WNBA in hopes to develop her line and expand WNBA merchandise. Escribano started playing basketball five years ago. Her brother Marco Escribano, a former Golden Valley basketball standout, was the reason she got involved with the game. Marco recalled his sister as never too interested in basketball and he typically saw her playing with toys in the stands during his games. However, one day Isabella saw how happy basketball made Marco and wanted that same feeling. Committed to the game, Marco took his sister to the park at 1 a.m. that night and her training began. Marco has been amazed with his sister’s work ethic, saying she’s in the gym training usually twice a day while somehow staying on top of school work and a social life. Isabella’s brother was most impressed when his sister was training with two boys doing wall-sits. Their trainer told them whoever can last the longest will make it to the NBA. Isabella was in tears from the pain but outlasted the boys in her wall-sit for over five minutes. “Long story short, she didn’t quit and she won,” said Marco. “That’s when I knew she was gonna do everything in her power to make her dreams come true.”
Since then, Isabella has made viral videos showcasing her skills. One video was seen by Bryant and was part of why she was invited to play for the Laker legend. Marco would still get to train with his sister while she played under Bryant, leading to hardworking games Bryant was known for, like “Who will leave the gym last?” Isabella and her brother would stay and put in as much extra work as they could while Bryant and his daughter Gigi worked on the opposite court. “Obviously, he didn’t leave so we’d end up leaving,” said Marco. “But we tried our best.” Isabella currently plays for the Creators, on the boys’ 14U AAU team under head coach Travis Divita. “I’ve known Izzy for a long time, she’s been very skilled,” said Divita. “She’s been working on her individual skills for a long time. She came back to us because her skill was beyond her years but she wasn’t seeing the results in games.” The head coach, like most, had plenty of praise for the point guard’s ability but says Isabella is an extremely coachable player. Divita has played a great part in getting Isabella’s game to the next level, teaching her more of the X’s and O’s of the game. “I want to be a player who can do it all,” said Isabella. “I want to be an Allen Iverson mixed with Sue Bird. I want to be Kyrie Irving with Steph Curry all mixed together.” Escribano, who trained with a number of NBA greats including Kobe Bryant, was called up to play for the U15 Mexican national basketball
team despite being two years younger than most of the competition. Chris Torres/The Signal Isabella has idols she looks up to in the NBA and WNBA, but still acknowledged her biggest heroes. “I have a lot of idols,” she said. “But I really look up to my parents. [I see] how hard they work for our family and just how they help us with everything we need. They’re my role models every day.” While she’ll have the chance to compete at her highest level yet, the young star is most excited to see hundreds of girls playing the sport she loves. The call-up to the Mexican national team has been on the Escribanos’ list since their early days of basketball. Isabella made a dream board she made for things she wished to accomplish and now can check off one more item as completed with plenty to go. “For her, I don’t see how she’s not going to end up a Division 1 basketball player,” said Divita. “I don’t think there’s any ceiling for her.” Isabella will gear up for the trip to Puerto Rico with her go-to “Sue Bird X Kyrie” kicks this week before games start up on June 26 in the FIBA U15 2022 Centrobasket games. The teen star will get to show the world yet again all of her talent and skill acquired from hard work, AAU, Kobe Bryant and of course her brother, Marco. “For me getting this opportunity, I don’t want to let [them] down,” said Isabella. “I want to give my all every day to Mexico. This is a big accomplishment to me and my dream board. I’m really excited.”

Newton’s class, said the trip was both fun and educational and they learned a lot of new things, like how much some things cost in the store. “The prices are way more than I expected. Way more.” Students also got to ask employees about their bosses and how much money they made in 2021. Kazi and her friends were all accolades for one of their favorite teachers. “He’s very creative. Most teachers don’t usually have such trips, and he lets us be creative with these trips and other fun activities like podcasts. He’s a very nice teacher.” Newton returns the love every year by holding the annual Math Amazing Race, and by inviting his former students to share their achievements and struggles with his current students. “It started off very grassroots level. From coming out here for a few minutes initially to now, it has culminated into a much larger event.

Acton-Agua Dulce School District Today, we asked a variety of math questions and lots of fun, geeky trivia questions like the number of chickens they’ve sold, their No. 1 product, etc.” The team had 60 minutes to answer nearly 35 questions. Costco Santa Clarita’s Warehouse Manager Elias Rahhal said that such events are a part of Costco’s adoption of local schools with limited access to government funding, including reading programs and backpack assistance. These kids, he added, get their field trip, and apply real-life experiences and math to this adventure. “They were asking me a multitude of questions, some of which even challenged my knowledge base and I had to actually go get the answer for them and come back,” he said with a smile. Newton said that the community and the school are appreciative of such partnerships, especially because what the kids learn in school, they can apply it out there. “This was a good day. These kids are enthusiastic and fun.”

“It’s just really important to know about because it’s not really taught about that much, like, growing up in school,” said Phoebe. “I’ve been told, like to my face, that it wasn’t that bad. And I just think… what a thing to say about something like that, taking somebody’s civil rights and freedom and hope and life away.” Phoebe said that floral imagery and other elements of natural beauty were highlighted in her art for historical reasons, not just stylistic ones. “Creating beauty in dismay and beauty behind barbed wire to make a community, to bring any sort of happiness into the camp, because they didn’t know how long they were going to be there… What if this was the rest of their life? What are they going to do but make something where they can feel like they could possibly live,” said Phoebe. In addition to the gallery, Phoebe encouraged attendees to make origami figurines, which she said is based on an ancient Japanese legend that if one folds 1,000 cranes, God will grant you a wish. “I would like, you know, everyone to fold a crane. But not only that… write a message on your paper or write something hopeful, a wish, positive message folded into your crane and pile them together,” said Phoebe. “So everybody’s positivity and hopeful wishes for the future are all in there together.
