Dear Membership,
I hope everyone is having a great start to 2023. We are moving into what is looking to be a banner year for the Spokane Club. Thanks to the loyalty of our membership, patronage numbers are moving up. We have had back-to-back months with positive membership growth. It is not only that we are adding a whole lot of new members, but we are also retaining our current membership. Membership trends of the past 6 months give me great confidence to state that the current membership base is really a core group of people who truly love and cherish being part of the Spokane Club family. This above all makes me and the rest of the team very proud to be working in service of the Spokane Club Members. We are committed to taking the membership experience in all parts of the club to the next level up.
I am most excited to talk about the relaunch of the 1910 Restaurant and Lounge. We know that over the last few years, the culinary offering in Spokane has been elevated in food and service, and our members have many amazing options. At the same time, the Club’s restaurant has not been a place you would frequent with your friends, family, or clients due to the lack of that special touch private club restaurants are known for. The Culinary Team of the Spokane Club is ready to change that come March 1st. One thing we have that no other restaurant has in Spokane is that we know each of our customers personally and we can personalize your dining experience to make each time you dine with us a memorable experience. Leoni, our new Restaurant Manager has been hard at work with her team behind the scenes. Throughout February, we will share many more details of the relaunch, including the new menu, uniforms, new wine program, cocktail list, surprise tastings, etc. I urge all members to come and try the restaurant at least once a month.
Harmukh ‘Molly’ Sandhu, General ManagerIn other major updates, the gym is being redone and we hope to have it finished by the 1st half of February. The new gym will not only look and play great but will also allow us to start a new Pickleball
league and bring back a bigger and better basketball program than ever before. In addition to the gym, all other wooden surfaces were refinished and sealed. I am also particularly excited about the Racquetball Social event in March. This event will allow all the racquetball players to meet each other and play friendly matches with other members at equal skill levels and yes, there will be cocktails.
Overall, all our club events are becoming increasingly popular and many sell out quickly so we urge you to make your reservation as soon as you see something which interests you. We are continuously looking to add events for groups of members who are underrepresented. For example, we are right now looking to add a whole lot of activities for teenagers to do at the Club. Another event to watch out for is the Brain and Brawn Challenge. Think of the “Amazing Race” but inside the Club.
There are more exciting things coming, and I look forward to sharing them as plans become more concrete.
See you around the corner.
Yours sincerely,
Harmukh ‘Molly’ Sandhu(331) 210-4105

MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Dear Members,
2023 has come on strong and we are excited for the next year in athletics. We just completed our yearly inspection and tune-up on all of our cardio equipment in the conditioning room. Whatever your New Year goals are, we are ready to help you meet them.
The basketball gym renovation is nearly done and should be completed on schedule. Next time you are in the facility, sneak a peek from the running track to check the status of the gym. I’ve enjoyed watching the
daily progress on a project of this magnitude. I’m sure our basketball, pickleball, and volleyball players are eagerly awaiting its completion.
If you haven’t seen our new apparel yet, check it out at the Sport Shop. Josh and his team did a great job on it. I recommend the hat and beanie-comfy and stylish. If you think of something that we should add, please send us a request and we will see what we can find for you.
Chris Barry, Athletic DirectorNew to aquatics-we are looking forward to launching our open water polo play at the Club in the coming months. Check the wall by the Sport Shop for open play signups. On March 11th, our Masters Swim Team, led by Coach Rob, will be hosting our annual Masters swim meet at the Club.
Our youth swim team, The Spokane Club Penguins, is in the middle of their busy season. We are excited to welcome 5 other local teams, around 100 kids, to compete in our monthly swim meets at the Club. If you are interested in swim team for your kids, please reach out to me at cbarry@spokaneclub.org.
I am looking forward to taking my 6 year old, Annaliese, to the Pretty in Pink Father-Daughter dance on March 11th. I am excited to see how adorable she looks in her dress and dance the night away. To sign up, visit members.spokaneclub.org. I hope to see you there!

Meet "The World’s Most Interesting Man"
Terry Fossum has been a man of many names: an Air Force Captain, a business leader, a martial arts master, and an adventurer. During his military service, he was named Humanitarian of the Year for Strategic Air Command. His experience in the business world led him to build successful sales teams around the globe while earning self-made millionaire status. He has also appeared in shows like, “Good Morning Fox” and “Z Nation” but most notably winning prime time survival reality show “Kicking & Screaming” with his survivalist novice partner. Click here to check out a preview! Now, Terry is on a mission to take his vast experience and goal-achieving mindset into a resource anyone can tap into with his “Oxcart Technique”.
Coming from humble beginnings, growing up in one of the poorest cities in the country, Terry overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to achieve success. As a young boy, he found himself at the wrong end of an assault rifle in his back alley. Life was dangerous and realities were tough. Before his father was killed, his neighbor once said to him, “I just want to make sure you understand something: Not one of your sons will ever grow up to be anything.” Those words are still prevalent in Terry’s life, even as he becomes successful in his various endeavors. This moment inspired one of the founding principles of his “Oxcart Technique”, which states that setting a goal is not as motivating as setting a goal with the combination of the fear of what happens when that goal is not achieved. The reference for the technique comes from the parable of a donkey with a carrot on a stick. Terry’s motivation wasn’t just to make it out of his small Texas town or to build a better future
for himself but to also never let what that neighbor had said come true.
Part of his determination moved him to console in self-improvement techniques. From positive visualization to the famous “secret to success”, Terry applied all sorts of methods and theories to aid him in his career
MEET THE MEMBERS
after the military. “All that stuff is important, but it isn’t enough.” Terry mentions. It wasn’t until Terry took a big loss in his income and his neighbor’s words came back to him like an echo chamber that forced him to push himself from that potential reality. “So, I got back up, dusted myself off, and started going at it again. I started hitting the same obstacles, the self-doubts, the excuses, everything else, and I blow them because I wasn't just visualizing all the niceties. I was going away from something. That guy will not be right.” That’s when Terry realized the power of the “Oxcart Technique.” This visualization applies to goals in every part of life. Once divorced, Terry made it his goal to strive for a happy marriage because he had experienced that type of loss once before and refused to go through it again. Through this techinque, he has a failure scenario, a success scenario, and an everyday action plan that pushes him from one and pulls him toward the other. “The fear of loss is a greater motivator than the prospects of gain.” Terry summed up perfectly.
As a keynote speaker, Terry has been able to present his experience and the development of the “Oxcart Technique” to corporate events and business seminars. His love for discovering new passions has taken him to author-hood, adding his book “The Oxcart Technique: Blueprint for Success” to his growing collection of published literature. “The Oxcart Technique: Blueprint for Success” has quickly climbed the bestseller charts, reaching number one on the Wall Street Journal, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble lists. To grab a copy of the ebook, click here.
In addition to spending his time developing leaders and motivating readers, Terry has traveled all over the globe to places like the Arctic Circle to hunt big game with bows and arrows to climbing mountains in Rwanda. His exploits have
even taken him deep into the Amazon Jungle where he was swimming with piranhas! Terry has also taken a stab at producing, acting, and even doing voice acting for a few roles earning him Best Supporting Actor and Fan Favorite at the 2021 Christian Film Festival. His main focus, however, has always been his family. When Terry married a woman with three young sons, he knew he was going to be responsible for raising them and retired early in order to be there for them every step of the way. “I can always make money, but I only had one chance to turn these boys into honorable young men.” One of Terry's most important lessons for his sons was involvement in the Boy Scouts. He became their Scoutmaster, took them camping, and taught them everything from canoeing to knot tying. Terry's connection with the Boy Scouts of America has spanned multiple decades with him not only dedicating his time to his groups but also raising millions of dollars for the organization through the exposure of winning “Kicking and Screaming.”
With all sorts of accomplishments under his belt, Terry loves living in Spokane, Washington. He had originally moved here for Fairchild Air Force Base but stayed because of the people. “Got into the community. Fell in love with the community.” Terry explained. “I got into the mountains and I’m like, I’m home. Then, they couldn’t move me out of here. This is my place.”
When asked about his favorite part of being a Spokane Club member, his answer was similar. “What I love most about Spokane Club is the people and being able to meet people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The Club provides us with the opportunity to connect with people who are interested in doing things for the community, being active, having fun, and making new friendships. That is what makes our Club so special and gives it a level of character that is truly unique in our area.”

SPOKANE CLUB'S SECOND HOME
EXCERPT FROM LIVING HISTORY WITH A LIVING LEGEND
As Spokane grew, (the “Falls” was Spokane Club grew with it and soon the need for larger quarters became a pressing concern. Undertaking this next phase of growth became the mission of F. Lewis Clark, the club’s second president who served from September 1890 to February 1891. Clark was a multimillionaire who made his fortune in the leading industries of his day: mining, milling, real estate, lumber, and banking. Not coincidentally, these were the leading industries in Spokane at the time. Clark, like many of his contemporaries, amassed, and later lost, great wealth with the rise and decline of these industries.
A native of Maine and educated at Harvard, Clark was a devoted yachtsman, the Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and one of the founders of the America’s Cup race. Clark came west in his 20s and founded C&O Mill and Elevator, the largest flour mill in the Pacific Northwest. At 29, he became the youngest person to ever serve as President of the Spokane Club.
In 1900, Clark proposed the building of a new clubhouse to occupy the top three stories of a building on the northeast corner of Riverside and Washington. Clark, who owned the property, built the club’s second home and leased it to the club members. The architect who designed the new club quarters was John K. Dow. The building opened in 1901 and for years was known as the Spokane Club Building. That building still stands today and is now known as the Legion Building, part of the East Downtown Historic District.
