‘There is no such thing as a child prostitute’ County, city officials launch Safe Youth Zone for victims of sexual exploitation.

As a child, Jessica Midkiff committed unspeakable acts for money.

In the eyes of her pimp, she was a commodity to be exploited. In the eyes of the law, she was a prostitute– a criminal.

Escaping her exploiter seemed impossible. He kept a watchful eye on her. She was marked.

And yet, all she wanted to do was go to school and pursue a good life.

On Wednesday of this week, Midkiff was safe– at a press conference inside the Long Beach Police Department’s downtown station, even being embraced by LA County Supervisor Don Knabe, who has championed the cause of protecting youth and keeping them out of the hands of sex traffickers.

Midkiff has now dedicated her life to mentoring young victims of sex trafficking. She, along with Knabe and other county and city officials, spoke at the press conference to announce the launch of the Safe Youth

Zone program, which aims to establish securee places for child sex-trafficking victims and other youth in desperate situations.

“I was able to escape from my exploiter, who had put the green light on me because I didn’t want to do the work,” she said. “I wanted to go home. I wanted to go to school.

I wanted to do things with my life, and that is something the exploiter wouldn’t allow me to do.”

Midkiff said she finally received some assistance from a shop owner who helped her get back home. Then a family member told her about a three-digit number that would change her life– 2-1-1, a free and confidential service that helps people find the local resources they need 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

She said she now tells the girls she mentors that, if they memorize any number, it should be those three digits.

She explained that, after calling that number, she was able to contact an operator who listened to her and got her the help that would finally get her off the street and in protective hands.

“I remember not knowing what to ask for or what to look for,” Midkiff said. “But I know, as I got ahold of see SAFE page 13

They say “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” but nobody mentioned the part about Nevada being such a crucial swing state for the U.S. presidential election come Nov. 8.

Local Democrats arrived at the Metro Blue Line Willow station in the early morning of Oct. 29 for a trip to Las Vegas that weekend to canvass and encourage Nevadans to do two things– vote and vote for presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

That morning, a bus was waiting for residents– that included volunteers

and local Democratic affiliates– who would go door-to-door in Vegas all weekend and return Sunday evening as part of the CA2NV program, in which volunteers travel to areas in Nevada to persuade voters.

The program is led by Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, who said he took a similar group to Nevada during the primary election, also made the trip that weekend and was seen boarding the bus that morning.

In his mind, it’s no question that Hillary Clinton is a better candidate than Donald Trump.

Talk of a LGB master plan fuels more worries over noise ordinance, international flights.

The Long Beach City Council voted 6-0 on Nov. 1 to request that the city manager report back within 45 days on the “process involved” in developing a master plan for the Long Beach Airport. As he discussed his motion, 8th District Councilmember Al Austin declared that his request wasn’t a “short-sighted agenda item.” He had actually brought this issue before the council earlier this year.

“There is not a clear articulated vision of the direction where the City wants to see the airport going in the long term,” Austin told the council Tuesday. “And that has eroded confidence of many residents and impacted neighborhoods throughout the city that are truly looking at the interest of the stakeholders when it comes to decisions affecting the airport.”

The request to study the possibility of an airport master plan, however, comes just one week after community meetings have been conducted to discuss the latest feasibility study on the proposal to build a federal inspection service (FIS) facility, which would handle customs at the airport. That facility would be needed, however, only if the council ultimately approves the idea of international flights in the first place.

Changing the local municipal airport into an international one has met with some resistance.

Many residents, particularly those who have joined neighborhood-advocacy group LB HUSH2, fear international flights are a threat to the City’s restrictive noise ordinance that took years to develop and protect.

While Austin was one of three councilmembers last year who voted against moving forward with studying the feasibility of developing the FIS at the airport, he did express concern over the lack of a master plan, but that suggestion brought a warning from the airport’s top executive.

Community residents, city officials and other stakeholders have wrestled for years over Long Beach Airport’s future. The Long Beach City Council has requested that the city manager’s office complete a report within 45 days and discuss the pros and cons of an overall airport master plan.

Fifth District Councilmember Stacy Mungo asked Long Beach Airport Director Jess Romo about the risk to the noise ordinance and his experience with developing a plan, and he told the council that most master plans are usually developed when officials are

contemplating the possibility of “adding capacity” to an airport.

“So, in that regard, if you were going to explore the 10 elements that make up a master plan, including airport capacity, ” Romo said Tuesday, “in my opinion, that does elevate the level of

risk.” He deferred to the city attorney’s office on the amount of risk that would be.

Commander’s advice LBPD North Patrol Division hosts meeting to update community on local crime.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, the Long Beach Police Department’s (LBPD) North Patrol Division hosted a community meeting Wednesday, Nov. 2 to discuss ways to stay safe during the holidays.

Rudy Komisza, commander of the LBPD’s north division, said he was surprised to see that so many people attended the meeting because he felt the Major League Baseball World Series game would keep people at home.

Komisza opened up the evening’s discussion by reading crime statistics to the public. He said that violent crime has decreased by 5.1 percent. However, despite the decrease in aggravated felonies, mail theft is on the rise as a result of people ordering items by mail for their Christmas shopping.

“I’m getting a lot of concerned citizens because of this,” Komisza said.

LBCC begins search for new president

The Long Beach Community College (LBCC) District Board of Trustees has begun a nationwide search for a new superintendent-president to succeed Eloy Ortiz Oakley, who is leaving LBCC in late December to become chancellor of the California community college system.

The Board of Trustees has established a 22-member search committee representing LBCC internal and external stakeholders. The committee members will be submitted for approval at the board meeting on Nov. 8, when it is also expected to name an acting superintendent-president to serve until a successor is found.

The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Executive Search Services was selected to conduct the search.

Three forums– one each for faculty, classified staff and the general public– were conducted Oct. 21 to gather input on qualifications to be used in the new president search. The feedback will be incorporated into the job profile.

Applications are due by Jan. 18, 2017, and the Board is expected to select the new superintendent-president in March.

Accompanying Komisza was Jose Gonzalez, resource officer with the LBPD’s North Patrol Division, who said that CPTED assessments are not only useful for small residential areas, but for large commercial venues, as well.

Gonzalez told the audience that he has conducted hundreds of assessments and said that security cameras and motion-activated lights are best for keeping criminals at bay.

Komisza also spoke about homelessness in the community. He said just because a person is homeless, it does not mean they are a criminal.

“It’s not a crime to be homeless,” he said.

ith Veterans Day just around the corner, I want to let our readers know that tomorrow we will all have the opportunity to honor our country’s veterans at the Long Beach Veterans Day Parade. Taking place at 10am, and starting at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street near Houghton Park, the 20th annual parade will feature grand marshals, floats, marching bands, military vehicles and units, veteran groups, service organizations, ROTC corps, scouting troops, equestrians and other participants sure to bring out the patriotism in all of us.

The Signal Tribune will also be taking part with Steve driving our logo-adorned SUV, me in the passenger seat and our neighbor boy Ethan riding in the back seat. I believe Steve and I have participated in the parade since the inaugural event.

If you have never attended the Long Beach Veterans Day Parade, please plan to do so this year. It is definitely an event worth attending.

For the fourth year, our staff has had the honor of creating and publishing the commemorative program to be presented to parade participants and viewers.

I support the Signal Hill City Council’s decision to oppose Measure M. Under the Measure M tax increase, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will get over $7 million per year from Signal Hill and use it to pay for transportation projects in the City of the Los Angeles and other affluent communities.

How much money will Signal Hill get from Measure M? About $165,000 per year. Think about it– the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will get $7 million from Signal Hill but only give the City $165,000 to fix city streets. That is not fair, and our communities deserves better!

Do not believe the ads being run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Groups that represent 44 cities in Los Angeles County are opposing Measure M because it is not fair.

Selfie stick(lers)...and stickers

Across the country, “ballot selfies” posted on social media have become a new form of political expression used to showcase one’s civic pride and participation. Citing the First Amendment violations, the ACLU filed a lawsuit [Monday] seeking to reverse the state’s 125-year-old ban barring voters from showing anyone their marked ballots. I agree that this outdated law needs reform. That’s why I supported AB 1494– passed this year by the Legislature and signed into law by the governor– allowing voters to take ballot selfies starting Jan. 1, 2017.

While sympathetic to efforts to accelerate the use of this new form of political expression for the November 2016 election, state law currently prohibits it, and only a court of law can authorize such a change, especially one proposed on the eve of the election. In the meantime, voters can still take a selfie of their “I Voted” sticker.

My office stands ready to comply with any decision handed down by the court on this matter.

First Fridays reaches a decade milestone

What started out with very humble beginnings has 10 years later evolved into not only one of the biggest economic drivers for Bixby Knolls but also an economic development model and goto event for the city. From one business hosting an artist in the evening hours, to two, to four, to six locations scattered in the pedestrian zone of Atlantic Avenue in the early days of First Fridays when the Atlantic corridor was fairly dark and in need of some energy, business owners followed the national First Fridays model of staying open later and using the arts as the catalyst to create the buzz and foot traffic on the sidewalks. The hopes were to gain more exposure and ultimately more sales for the businesses. The event began just at the start of

Unfortunately, while checking in at the hotel, Megan’s father suffered a medical emergency requiring ambulance transport to Dignity Health– St. Mary Medical Center and admission to the hospital’s ICU. Megan, not wanting to tie the knot without her father to walk her down the aisle, stopped the wedding. But on Monday, Oct. 31, the staff at St. Mary Medical Center came together to give the bride her most important wish– the presence of her father at her wedding.

Her father, Erik Pflum (in the wheel chair), joined his daughter in the chapel at St. Mary Medical Center, to walk (or wheel) his daughter down the aisle and into the waiting arms of her husband to be, William Zdan.

The Long Beach Police Department is again warning the community about a dramatic increase in telephone scams targeting residents and businesses throughout the city of Long Beach and region.

In recent weeks, residents have reported a telephone scam where the caller is posing as a law-enforcement official who informs the resident of an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to comply with jury service or summons.

Putting the ‘home’ in ‘Welcome home’ Salvation Army program gives household essentials to veterans.

From Belize to Argentina, from Vietnam to Cambodia, retired Navy man Gordon Kulju has seen much of the world. But, despite witnessing so much culture, he said a sight he has no complaints about is his apartment in Long Beach.

After serving from 1963 to 1969, Kulju found a roof over his head in Bells Shelter, a Salvation Army-run facility that was his home for some time until he was housed in his current apartment through a program with the organization.

“It’s a good program,” Kulju said. “They helped me get into the apartment and gave me money for the deposit.”

To make his apartment feel more like a home, Major Judy Hedgren, Salvation Army social service/community coordinator, introduced Kulju to the Welcome Home Kit program.

The kit supplies military veterans with dishes, pots, pans, flatware, kitchen towels, utensils, bath towels, bath mats, a trash can, soap, a toothbrush holder and a $40 gift card to WalMart.

The program started in 2013, according to Hedgren, and every year since then, the Salvation Army tries to help approximately 100 veterans. From 2014 to 2015, the number of veterans helped has climbed from 65 to 135. As of press time, Hedgren said 75 veterans are already signed up for the program.

To receive aid from the Welcome Home Kit program, a veteran’s case worker must get in contact with the Salvation Army after the client is housed via the government’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program called HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH).

ic needs and the quality of local public housing agencies.

Once the VA determines which areas of the country have the highest number of homeless veterans, it identifies its facilities in the area. HUD then selects housing agencies nearby to the identified facilities and sends the agencies invitations to apply for the vouchers.

Congress appropriated $50 million in 2011 to serve approximately 7,000 voucher families and $60 million in 2016 to serve approximately 8,000 families, according to HUD.gov.

Hedgren said she enjoys working closely with veterans.

“My husband served with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War,” she said. “So, this morning, it was neat to talk to a veteran who served with the 101st Airborne Division during the same war. It was nice to talk about his experience.”

Hedgren said that a struggle veterans face when they get a new home is they don’t always know what they need to purchase for the home. The Salva-

tion Army pre-purchases all the materials for the veterans and includes additional items if the veteran has kids to care for.

“At first, the program was just for female veterans and their children,” Hedgren said. “When I took over, I opened it up for the men as well.”

The items are purchased using the organization’s credit card.

The money collected for the credit card comes from various donations and charity events.

The Salvation Army recently hosted a golf tournament to raise funds for the kit program.

“The more support we get, the more we can do,” Hedgren said.

With Christmas and other holidays quickly approaching, she said that donors can call the Salvation Army and request to specifically help military families. If people choose to help in that way, all proceeds go toward a veteran and his or her family.

Hedgren said that the support from people helps maintain approximately 70 percent of veterans housed.

the things they gave me,” Kulju said. “They gave me really nice stuff for my home. It helped me so much, I couldn’t believe it.”

He still makes visits to the Salvation Army’s facility, collects food from a food bank and keeps in contact with Hedgren.

Having traveled to different corners of the globe, Kulju said that the poverty he has seen in

It’s been nearly four years since American singer and Long Beach native Jenni Rivera boarded a plane in Mexico that would ultimately claim her life and six others in a crash hours after her concert in Monterrey.

Her death made international headlines for weeks, and her family was left in mourning.

A lot has changed since that tragedy, and Rivera’s children are still coping with the idea of moving on from not only the reality of their mother’s death, but also trying to

establish a life that goes beyond just being “Jenni Rivera’s kids.”

“After her passing, we were kind of shaken a little bit,” Jacquelin Campos, one of Rivera’s daughters, 26, said. “We didn’t know what to do. She was kind of the umbrella for our family. But, we’re finding ourselves now.”

Moving on also involves being a part of a new reality show.

The Riveras, starring Rivera’s children as they pursue their own aspirations and deal with their issues, premiered in October on NBC Universo, where it airs every Sunday at 10pm.

This isn’t the first time Rivera’s children have been in front of the cameras, however. A few years ago, they were part of Rivera’s own reality show, I Love Jenni, which centered around the singer’s career, household and enterprises.

Things are a little different this time around, Campos said. Initially, when Rivera started I Love Jenni, Campos rejected the notion of starring in a show because of her personal desire to maintain her privacy, but she realized her mom was “actually trying to set up a platform for her children.”

“I was really rebellious, and I think I kind of resented her career choice,” she said. “I was all about being normal, like everyone else, and having a mom as a singer made it hard to have a normal life. I was resentful toward her in that sense.”

It all changed when Campos had her own daughter when she was 19.

Becoming a mom allowed her to

relate with her mom in a way that she never could before.

“It was weird, because my relationship with her about four months before she passed was amazing,” Campos said. “I got to do things with her that I really didn’t get to do before because she was so busy. I got to enjoy her in a different light, and I was able to reconcile with her and say sorry for being so hard on her... I think it’s beautiful that I got to apologize to her, and I appreciated her in a different sense now that I was a mom.

I was so mean– I hope my kids are never like that.”

A few years later, Campos, who works at her mother’s enterprises, found it difficult to acclimate back to a routine lifestyle after already having been on TV. The idea for a new reality show starring Campos and her siblings was sparked by fan interest.

Mixed in with fan support is also criticism. People often comment

on social media and judge Campos and her siblings about their life choices.

“It’s hard sometimes, because it feels like people think we are a different type of species or something,” she said. “They just expect us to be perfect. I’m really excited about the show because it gives us an opportunity to show the world that we are regular people... It seems like I am unraveling my purpose and my dreams on camera and trying to figure it all out.”

And, like most families, there are arguments. During a taping of The Riveras, Campos said she got so heated in an argument, that she requested for the cameras to go away.

“It was a really big fight. A bad one,” Campos said. “And I was yelling at the cameras, ‘Turn off the cameras! That’s it! No more!’ ... I didn’t want the world to see see RIVERA page 12

If you have music “in your soul,” you will love experiencing the 2009 four-time Tony Award-winning musical Memphis at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center before it closes Nov. 6 (this weekend!). And if you can’t recall what music in your soul feels like, this exuberant production set at the inception of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s will certainly refresh your memory, and delight your spirit!

Centered on the love story between a singer and a Tennessee radio DJ in the 1950s, Memphis traverses musical territory ranging from rhythm & blues to soul-

ful ballads to bopping early rock tunes, all accompanied by a live band and an extraordinary ensemble cast who bring each song to life with fervent vocals and high-energy, fluid dance moves.

The two talented leads, Michael Monroe Goodman as Huey and Krystle Simmons as Felicia, are perfectly cast in their roles as lovers of music who soon fall in love with each other. Simmons as Felicia has a heartbreakingly wide and deep vocal range, and Goodman brings a rock edge and passion to Huey’s songs. But because it’s Tennessee in the 1950s, and Felicia is African-American while Huey is not, their strong feelings are continually challenged by racial prejudices.

That tension is echoed in Huey’s desire to bring the music of Felicia’s world to the white community via records, radio and eventually television. The ensuing cultural resistance is portrayed with humor, including white parents not understanding what their children are listening and dancing to, and more somber questions from the black community about whether Huey is appropriating music born of a pain he has not lived.

Grounding that music in the spiritual expression of black gospel is done well, with church scenes suggesting hope in the form of inclusivity and acceptance.

The rest of the cast, particularly Michael Shepperd as Felicia’s protective older brother Delray, Jay Donnell as janitor-turned-singer Bobby, Julie Cardia as Huey’s acerbic mother Gladys and Kenneth Mosley as bartender Gator, carry their roles and songs with aplomb. The unwavering commitment of the entire cast, which includes an additional 15 spirited singers and dancers, electrifies this non-stop production. Choreography (by director Edgar Godineaux) is engagingly propulsive and often sultry, using classic dance moves from the era, with resonances of James Brown, Chuck Berry and male and female harmonic trios.

Everything about this production, from the precise musical direction (Darryl Archibald), to gorgeous 1950s costuming (Karen St. Pierre), to efficiently designed sets (Stephen Gifford) that evoke a nightclub, kitchen, city street, radio station and television stu-

dio, converge to make Memphis an exceptional experience you don’t want to miss.

Exhibit to highlight work of arts council’s fellowship recipients

The Arts Council for Long Beach will host an exhibit honoring its 2015–2016 professional artist fellows with an opening on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 6pm to 9pm at the Packard building, 205 E. Anaheim St. The fellows are Gary Alvarez, Connie DK Lane, Christine Nguyen, Lara Odell and Ramon Rodriguez.

“This exhibition demonstrates

the strong cultural expressions we have in Long Beach,” said Arts Council Executive Director Griselda Suarez. “Our fellows use identity to springboard into an aesthetic analysis of life.”

To “unpack” is to remove the contents of a package, but it is also the act of analysis through detailed examination, according to the Arts Council. Marco Schindelmann, former Arts Council

president, along with co-curator and Long Beach artist group FLOOD Inc. President Kamran Assadi, created the show’s title.

“Among other things, we are seeking commonality between the five artists and the commanding space in which their work will be exhibited,” Schindelmann said.

Alvarez unpacks his identity through his films and examines his working-class, bi-cultural/ bilingual, first-generation American experience. His films, such as A Good Man and Loncheros, aim to tell thought-provoking and socially conscious stories influenced by his experiences.

Lane unpacks time through her large-scale sculptures inspired by her memories growing up in Hong Kong. She uses unique materials such as shredded paper pulp, de-

composed coffee grounds, wax, roofing cement and latex rubber and often suspends her sculptures from the ceiling with meat hooks.

Nguyen unpacks nature by collecting, examining and recreating it. Her work often combines drawing and photography and employs the cyanotype process– a 19th-century photographic technique that uses sunlight to expose paper and water to develop it.

Odell unpacks her anxiety through intimate gouache and paper cut-out illustrations. The cut-outs are labor-intensive and address the fragility of identity through the process, form and

color.

Rodriguez unpacks duality through his memories growing up in a tiny isolated village in Bolivia and living the last 10 years in Long Beach. Through traditional painting and sculpture, he explores the duality of the countryside and the city.

“It’s making sure that people are taken care of... rights for women, rights for LGBTQ people, rights for supporting immigration reform– all of those are important to support the community.”

He also touted her support of cities and ports and the increased security that guns will not be in the hands of criminals as reasons to vote for the Democratic candidate.

Ashton Baker, 55, a Long Beach resident and volunteer, said the population in Nevada consists of mostly minorities, a demographic he feels presidential nominee Donald Trump has negatively targeted and is “trying to send home somewhere.”

“What he wants to do is look at me and bring things back to me,” said Baker, who is African-American, implying that Trump believes minorities are a source of the country’s problems.

“Trump represents more of a borderline dictatorship. He doesn’t realize it, but that’s what it is. And we don’t do that. This is a free democracy in this country... and he wants to have, for me personally, control of the world.”

Baker added that Trump doesn’t understand people’s struggles, adding how he was instead given everything with a “silver spoon.”

Robert Namath, 46, a volunteer from Newport Beach in Orange County, said Trump’s anti-minority rhetoric does not appropriately represent “the serious job of being president.”

“You can’t just say anything that comes out of your mind and just say it that way,” he said. “You have to be the president for all of the people, and you have to be respectful of everybody... you don’t want to insult the American people or any segment of the American people.”

Both Namath and Baker criticized Trump’s decision to not release his tax returns, his stance on nuclear weapons and business methods, but Clinton has controversy surrounding her campaign, as well.

Clinton’s use of a private email server, which consequently led to leaked confidential information, specifically in regard to the 2012 attack on Benghazi, has been met with heavy criticism, mostly from Congress members and FBI investigators.

Last week, FBI Director James Comey announced that the bureau had discovered additional emails and was reviewing them to see whether they are related to its investigation into Clinton’s handling of classified information.

Baker was dismissive of Clinton’s email situation, his justification being that he himself emails people every day, and that she didn’t release anything destructive, such as bomb codes, he said.

“They are trying to say that she used that as fuel to give out government information,” he said. “She has said that she’s not trying to hide anything. She’s released everything... they are trying to influence the outcome of this election.”

When made aware that it may not have been Clinton’s intent to leak out information, but she did so anyway, Baker admitted that it might have been “careless” but ultimately concluded that most people might not understand the details of the emails.

Others think the situation has been blown out of proportion.

Coleen Maldonado, 46, resident of Long Beach and affiliate of the city’s Lambda Democratic Club, believes that nothing has been proven for people to suspect that Clinton’s emails have criminal or sneaky intentions.

She even brought up previous secretaries of state who have utilized private email servers, such as Colin Powell or Condoleeza Rice.

However, according to politifact. com, sources close to the situation told the website that the only habitual email user in office was Powell, and even he didn’t utilize a private email server based in his home, unlike Clinton.

Maldonado also affirmed that it might not have been Clinton’s smartest strategy.

“While it was ill-advised and careless, and perhaps maybe not well thought out... for me, I’m comfortable with the fact that she’s already been investigated and has been found with no

criminal intent of that,” she said. “I am much more concerned about the issues and what she’s going to do for us.”

Domestically, Maldonado is in support of Clinton’s policies on the economy and LGBTQ rights. She also highlighted the fact that Clinton has been established as the most qualified presidential candidate ever.

“The comparison to Trump is just unbelievably different,” she said.

“When I see Trump, who criticizes just about everyone, and insults all kinds of groups on everything based on ethnicity, income status, treating women like

this and all that, I can’t possibly see a man representing our country like that.

If anything, I’d do anything I can to make sure he doesn’t.”

Namath commends Clinton’s pro-labor and pro-business approach to creating jobs. As far as national security is concerned, he said she has the ability to get the job done and mentioned her heavy involvement as secretary of state when the Obama Administration orchestrated the mission to kill terrorist Osama bin Laden in 2011.

He also feels that Trump will bring the country back to the “Republican

policies” eight years ago that “took us nowhere,” referring to former U.S. President George W. Bush’s tenure.

“Trump is just very bombastic,” Namath said. “His economic benefits are going to be like it was in the past– when all the benefits went to the wealthy. I just think she’s the better candidate.”

Baker’s fear is that Clinton’s presidency will mirror U.S. President Barack Obama’s, with Republicans rejecting ideas before “they’re even put on the table.”

He said government should be more unbiased.

“We need to be more open-minded, then make a decision,” Baker said. “Don’t just make a decision because you’re assuming, and then you just want to stick with your decision because you already made it. Be open-minded and hear what the other side has to say.”

Baker knows that whether it’s Clinton or Trump who becomes the presidential-elect of the United States on Nov. 8, that person will have to work together and work with opposing parties every day.

But, he wants people to understand that everyone, at the end of the day, is just that– people.

“We’re all for one country, one nation, under God,” Baker said. “Red, blue and all of that– big deal. We’re all people first. We are here to protect life.

We’re united with the idea that your opinion may not be my opinion, but we are still here together, and we can live together.” ✦

the operator– and the operator stayed on the phone with me for about 30 minutes to an hour– I told her everything that I had just gone through, and she listened patiently.”

That operator located a place for Midkiff to go and receive services.

“Because of that operator– I don’t know who she is– I was able to get to a safe place and begin my recovery,” Midkiff said. “This journey that I’ve been on, it all kind of started with someone saying, ‘Hey, why don’t you try this number out and see if they can help you? So, I’d like to say, moving forward, I’m very happy about the Safe Youth Zone. I support it 100 percent. I hope our girls really feel safe and they go for it and they use it. And I hope our girls use 2-1-1 as well. The 2-1-1 number can definitely appoint the girls to where the Safe Youth Zones are.”

Also presenting the new program at the event were: Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia; Long Beach Police Department Chief Robert Luna; Michelle Guymon, director of the Child Trafficking Unit with the LA County Probation Department; LA County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby; and LA Sheriff’s Department Capt.

Mayor Garcia began his comments by thanking those involved in creating the new program.

“The City of Long Beach has always been committed to the safety of all youth, girls, women and, really, all families across the city,” Garcia said. “We know that sex trafficking is real, and I’ll always remember

something that Supervisor Knabe likes to say, and I completely agree.

It’s that there is no such thing as a youth prostitute. And that is something that he has always said and I truly believe.”

Garcia praised the various programs within the police department and county, as well as nonprofits, that are addressing issues related to sexual exploitation of children.

Knabe pointed out that the Safe Youth Zone program takes those existing resources a step further, now that officials are more aware of the prevalence of sexual exploitation.

“Children are exposed to terrible situations, and at times they have no family to turn to,” Knabe said. “Kids who are abused, lost, frightened, neglected or in danger on the streets do not have a place in the community where they can run and hide. That’s why, in 1997, I brought in a motion in front of the board with a supportive decree for a safe house program as a way to ensure temporary havens for any child or adult facing a potentially threatening situation and needing a place to go. Nearly 20 years later, we had no idea that our children needed protection from monsters looking to sexually exploit them for profit.”

Knabe said children and their families face brutal abuse if they attempt to escape or do not meet a quota.

Some who do escape end up returning to their pimps, who further abuse and exploit them.

He said that the law-enforcement team standing with him near the podium had been working on ways to rebrand and expand the Safe House program to protect child sex trafficking victims.

“Today, we stand before you to proudly announce the launch of the Safe Youth Zone program,” the supervisor said. “We are creating a network of places [that] victims can seek out when put on the street by their scumbag pimp or trafficker. We’ve updated the response for when a victim seeks help, so they will now be connected– which is an important piece to all of this– to life-saving programs and services.”

Knabe explained that law enforcement and first responders at county fire station staff are being trained to identify the warning signs of a trafficking victim.

“Each Safe Youth Zone will be identified by a bright-yellow placard that will be placed at the entrance to each facility,” he said. “Bumper stickers, as well, will be promoting the Safe Youth Zones on fire trucks and squad cars.”

The Long Beach Police Department’s downtown station is one of the facilities that will pilot the program. The others are the Compton and Century Sheriff’s stations and Lynwood and Willowbrook county fire stations.

“We all know that we have much more to do and could not be prouder of what we’ve accomplished by working together,” Knabe said.

“We’ve gone from just not getting it, to being a model here in our nation.

And that’s because everyone came to the table– not just what you see up here– but organizations like the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force, Kingdom Causes and other faith-based groups. They’ve joined service providers, law-enforcement, community groups, our county de-

After the event, the Signal Tribune asked Guymon, who heads the county’s Child Trafficking Unit, why boys are rarely, if ever, mentioned in discussion of child sex trafficking.

“It’s definitely happening with boys,” Guymon said. “At first, we’ve all been focused on this thing called human trafficking and sex trafficking, and we thought it was happening in other countries. So, we didn’t really realize it was happening to

our kids. And, so I think, under that cloud, we’ve just been focused on girls– that’s what came out into the forefront for us. We are now starting to do more of a focus on young men, and we hear from across the country and our own law-enforcement officers [that] if you look at homelessness, there are far more young men that are homeless, and how are they getting their basic needs met?”

Guymon said that her unit is actually currently working with a few boys who have been rescued from exploitation.

“It seems like, as a society, when things come up, we always go to the girls first,” she said. “I don’t know why that is. We just do. Then we realize, ‘Oh, yeah. This is happening to boys too.’” ✦

As the event grew and more businesses participated, it was apparent that the BKBIA needed some additional help with the monthly coordination.

The Foundation will support the men and women of the Signal Hill Police Department who give their full-time attention to the interests of community welfare and existence.

Signal Hill Chief of Police This past year we successfully hosted multiple events to cultivate and nourish the “People and the Police” relationships; The Signal Hill Police Foundation Inaugural Event and Police Awards Ceremony in January and the Luncheon and Community Gathering in July. Over 400 community and police members came together during these two events.

In addition to raising funds to support existing police department outreach efforts such as National Night Out, Too Good for Drugs and the Holiday Outreach program, new outreach efforts were funded. A Student of Character was recognized and her education efforts supported and a significant donation was made to the Rotary Club of Signal Hill Backpack program. To help get people to see all the action early on, the then councilmember, Rae Gabelich, sponsored a trolley for a few months, which helped to get people from one end of the pedestrian zone to the other. This was critical during the early years, while there were still gaps in the participating businesses between San Antonio and Bixby Road. Now the trolley has become a family favorite as a fun way to get an overview of all the activities going on. More music was added to the event to attract people from one location to another. And the BKBIA works diligently on making sure the corridor is lighted well because safety and comfort are critical components to the event.

To really describe what First Fridays has evolved into beyond a business showcase takes a bit of wordsmithing.

Always family-friendly, First Fridays is a mash-up of sounds and styles with a full spectrum of our city’s diversity, people of all ages, a music showcase for Long Beach talent, a testing space for CSULB art students and the rise in the sense of neighborhood pride. It is not quite replicated in other neighborhoods anywhere in the city.

Where else can you listen to a Fleetwood Mac tribute while kids and adults do double-dutch jump rope next to you, while inside of the Expo Arts Center men in lab coats and gas masks perform improvisational-sound experimental music with Long Beach City College dancers, while kids perform musical numbers while DJs play reggae, soul, old-school hip-hop while you pass your neighbor on the sidewalk while the trolley bell rings as it goes by while you stroll with a dessert?

The BKBIA has partnered and hosted city officials and departments such as Mayor Garcia, Councilmembers Austin and Uranga, the city auditor, the city clerk, LBPD, LBFD, Homeland Cultural Center from MacArthur Park and Public Works, who recently installed temporary separated bike lanes for the event. The event also highlights and showcases the Bixby Knolls area schools, nonprofits, youth groups, Rancho Los Cerritos and religious institutions. It’s all things Bixby-centric.

Highlights of First Fridays over the years have included: walking a horse into the Expo Arts Center; Sirena Serpentina fire dancers; petting zoos; a “Thriller” flash mob; creating of “The Allery” as a public art space; spoken-word and hip-hop poets at Elise’s Tea Room; the Knolls Ranger and Bixby Belle; wandering improv theater troupes; the Sexy Sax Man; s’more stations; DJs and bands in unusual locations; Grand Prix vehicles; Little Owl Preschool’s art shows; First Books story time (which returns this month after a two-year time-out); Day of the Dead altars; themed music performances of Pink Floyd, Prince, Neil Young, David Bowie, The Clash and Bob Marley; the annual Mardi Gras Parade with king and queen; the annual Long Beach County Fair; an Olympic Torch Run; live tattooing at Long Beach Clothing; Black History Month “Forgotten Images” exhibit; “the Sussex Clown”; a stilt walker dressed as a wide range of characters; street magicians; and the annual tree and menorah lighting ceremony in December.

The BKBIA continues its focus and energies on the event as it draws from other parts of the city each month. It’s fun to see someone I know say, “Meet Joe. He came all the way here from Belmont Shore!” In the beginning, if we had 20 people out on the street and into our office, we thought it was a success. Now it’s a matter of managing some of the issues of success. The BKBIA also has a Clean Team picking up trash during the event and back again on Saturday morning for a once-over.

Immediate plans for the future include connecting the businesses on Long Beach Boulevard to the action on Atlantic via a second trolley. Moving people around to get an even bigger and great Bixby Knolls experience is the goal. ✦

For the last four years Tokotah Ashcraft has been responsible for the growth of the artist pool that sets up in the Expo Arts Center, the “Allery” at Burlinghall and Atlantic and at specific business locations.

Tokotah also sifts through the numerous submissions each month and programs the live music that pairs music
