Teen dancer to spread her wings after leading local Swan Lake production
Rhiannon Williams Editorial Intern
As the prestigious Long Beach Ballet prepares for this weekend’s production of Swan Lake, its star student, after performing in the lead role, is planning to take flight as she moves toward a promising future in her professional career. Jordan De Pina, a 17-year-old Los Alamitos High School student, was selected as one of 30 dancers from a worldwide group of 7,000 to perform solo at Lincoln Center in New York City. That performance was in April. “[Jordan] started here when she was 9…where it’s pretty concentrated on ballet,” said David Wilcox, Long Beach Ballet’s founder and artistic director. “She did everything we told her to. She was always in class. She never missed class. She took every correction we gave her and fixed it. She’s very smart, and very humble, and very trusting and very respectful…and with her having this beautiful body that she was gifted with and doing everything we told her, she has become an exceptional ballerina.” The high school senior will dance the leading part of Odette, the White Swan, as her last performance with the Long Beach Ballet before leaving to see DANCER page 7

Tales of squalor, slumlords prompt LB Council to adopt new rental inspection

At the June 2 Long Beach City Council meeting, protestors dressed in bright-orange shirts stood in a long queue during a public-comment session to tell their stories of slumlords who didn’t care about the vermin that had infested their homes. Michael Cairncross told the Council that at his previous residence, the roof leaked and there were cockroaches. He described the mold on the walls and how doctors determined that the yeast found in his lung during a biopsy came from that mold. His wife was also recovering from mold-related problems with her esophagus, he added. He said after he complained to the code-enforcement authorities, he was evicted and later found himself living in a motel that had equally squalid conditions. First District Councilmember Lena Gonzalez acknowledged that the renters’ struggles are real. “Some of our residents are living in very bad situations, conditions that affect the health and lives of children in their families,” Gonzalez said. “And housing needs to be healthy and safe for everybody. Renters should not fear retaliation from voicing their…basic needs.” In a first-reading vote, the Council unanimously voted in favor of an ordinance that would adopt a new program that aims to seek out the slumlords and take initiatives to inspect
