Solar Cup Race teaches LB students life lessons CJ Dablo Staff Writer

Just days before the Solar Cup race weekend, the McBride High School students giggled with a little nervous energy as they thought about how far they had progressed over the past seven months. During an interview with the Signal Tribune, they hesitated to say out loud if there were any particular worries about their boat. They didn’t want to jinx anything. “The point is: it works. It floats,” ninth-grader Isabel Guzman said, as she recounted the number of times they had to tweak the motor to get it to work the first time they tested the boat. “So, well we finally got it working. Sparks flew. We flew, but it works now.” It’s McBride’s first time participating in the 13th Annual Solar Cup, a competition that anticipates about 41 high schools and 800 students to race their sun-powered boats on Lake Skinner in Temecula from May 15 to 17. Since November, McBride students and the other high school students have thrown themselves into a project that required the students to collaborate on building, designing and finally racing the boat. The competition is sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, and the teams from McBride High School and Long Beach Polytechnic High School are sponsored by the Long Beach Water Department. It’s not the average “science project.” Students had to learn the technical skills, applying the knowledge they gleaned from design, engineering and electronics classes. They had to learn carpentry and woodworking, all building similarly shaped canoe-like boats from the wood supplied in training classes. They had to film a public-service message on water conservation and present technical reports that see RACE page 14

America’s favorite pastime sport may be returning to the Los Angeles region– and Signal Hill is one of several neighboring cities that could reap the benefits if the City of Carson is successful in becoming home to a new football stadium. The Signal Hill City Council considered backing the Los Angeles Stadium in Carson on May 5 following a discussion on the economic impact the stadium would have on the city. Signal Hill’s proximity to Carson and location near the 405 Freeway could draw more visitors. The stadium could also potentially bring more job opportunities for Signal Hill residents. After their discussion, the city council unanimously voted to adopt a resolution supporting efforts to build a stadium in Carson. If developed, the stadium is anticipated to be the new home of the Oakland Raiders and/or the San Diego Chargers. Jim Dear, former mayor of Carson, said he had been involved in the stadium discussions early on when the idea was floated around. Dear is also chairman of the Carson Successor Agency, the replacement for the Carson Redevelopment Agency. Dear stepped down as mayor in March following his election as the new city clerk. “We welcome and appreciate the support [of Signal Hill],” Dear said. “We know that the economic vitality of our community has a beneficial overflow to Signal Hill, Long Beach, Lakewood and other communities surrounding Carson, and I think that’s why communities like Signal
