LB’s new draft ordinance on medical marijuana to initially emphasize home-delivery services

Blue Dream is one of the many strains of marijuana cultivated for medicinal use. On Dec. 8, the Long Beach City Council requested the city attorney’s office to return with another draft of an ordinance to regulate medical-marijuana businesses using a phased-in approach. CJ Dablo Staff Writer
The Long Beach battle to get a working ordinance to regulate medical-marijuana businesses has gone on for several years, and now the city council favors a new direction– allowing only home-delivery services initially. A new draft ordinance will be expected to outline a phased-in approach, which would allow a limited number of marijuana businesses to operate only home-delivery services before they will be approved to open physical storefront locations. On Dec. 8, the council voted 5-4 to request the city attorney’s office to deliver a new draft ordinance that emphasizes that phasing-in process. Councilmembers Lena Gonzalez, Suzie Price, Daryl Supernaw, Stacy Mungo and Al Austin voted to approve the motion. Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal and councilmembers Dee Andrews, Roberto Uranga and Rex Richardson were the
dissenting votes. Councilmember Price offered this latest motion, which was seconded by Austin. Under this draft ordinance, only four businesses could offer medical cannabis to be delivered at a residence at first, but they would not be allowed to operate a storefront location yet. The timing of when the first delivery-only business will open affects how quickly brick-andmortar stores could be opened. According to the motion, six months after the first business opens, the city staff will be expected to report on the amount the City collected in tax revenues. Staff will also determine the fiscal impact to the City (including enforcement) and note issues concerning public safety. The council will only then consider allowing those four initial businesses to open storefront locations at that time. The motion states that “six months after the first storefront see MARIJUANA page 15
Let it... snow?
Sisters Akira and Solea Smith enjoy some “snow” at the Los Cerritos Neighborhood Association’s 5th annual Christmas caroling event on Sunday, Dec. 13 in the Los Cerritos neighborhood. Carolers met up around 4pm that day and brought potluck items to share, as well as toys to donate to needy families. Participants drank hot chocolate and cider during the two-hour walking event. The group stopped at four locations, including a convalescent center and three homes. Each home hosted a “curbside party,” where the owners gathered friends and neighbors to listen to carolers Bundts_JB_Layout 1:42 PM Page 1 and enjoy refreshments.
