In its fifth year, beekeepers club looks to expand with construction of sanctuary.

They say bees are dying, but that doesn’t mean the people trying to protect them are meeting the same fate. As wild bees struggle to survive in certain cases, a group of local enthusiasts is working to ensure that these bees– specifically, honeybees– can thrive in their environment. The bee lovers have been rescuing these little insects for five years now. The Long Beach Beekeepers Club, which celebrated its fifth anniversary in February and has recently been incorporated as a nonprofit group with tax-exempt 501c(3) status, has received a permit from the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine to build a bee sanctuary in the city. The sanctuary, three years in the making, will serve as a safe haven for bees and a place for group members to convene for classes and other activities. It will be based in Willow Springs Park, and a press release in February detailed that it will be the first and only municipal bee refuge in the western United States. If Long Beach city officials had thought that the fight over an international airport had been finished over a month ago, they were wrong. In a surprise move, the city’s Airport Advisory Commission voted to revisit the request for a federal-inspection services facility (FIS) on Feb. 16. It means that at its next meeting this month, that commission will discuss a recommendation to ask that the city council rethink its seemingly fateful January decision and vote this time in favor of the FIS facility that would be needed for an international airport. According to the minutes from its February meeting, the commission voted merely to place the issue on its agenda for its March meeting. Audio from the city’s website confirms that the commissioners did not discuss the merits of the proposal. The commissioners will take on the subject at length at the next meeting, and since it is a public forum, there will be an opportunity for public comment. Assistant City Attorney Michael Mais acknowledged in a phone interview Wednesday that it is unusual for a commission to ask the city council to reconsider a vote. However, he said that if the issue is discussed on the March agenda and the commission ultimately votes in favor of the recommendation, that information will be forwarded to the

SH City Council discusses non-conforming use regulations for auto-body shops Council also considers options for former Fresh & Easy property. Cory Bilicko Managing Editor
Non-conforming use At its Feb. 28 meeting, the Signal Hill City Council discussed with city
staff an initiation of a zoning ordinance amendment and associated performance standards related to current non-conforming use regulations regarding auto-body shops. Charlie Honeycutt, city manager, said that staff had prepared a report on the matter after Prestige Auto Body expressed concerns that the current regulations prevent such businesses from remaining in Signal Hill.
Scott Charney, community development director, presented a history of the current non-conforming use regulations and the process to amend them. He began his presentation by explaining that a non-conforming use is a use that had been allowed under existing regulations but is no longer permitted because of current regulations. Under current rules, the City maintains two separate inventories of such
facilities: those associated with the auto center, be it dealerships or auto center accessory use; and independent operators. “It’s important to note that the non-conforming use ordinance is working as it’s intended,” Charney said. “The goal is to ultimately get to zero facilities, and the facilities have gone from 11 to seven.” After Charney’s presentation,
Councilmember Michael Noll asked Charney for clarification on why the regulations are being reconsidered. “Scott, on the ordinance that we have in place right now, it was caused mainly because of the problems we were having with the auto-repair people changing oil on the street?” Noll asked. “There’s one right off of Cherry [Avenue] that we had daily calls on. k NOw Measure F thomasBENSON
SIGNAL HILL CITY COUNCIL Why should you vote NO on Measure F? Measure F is a medical marijuana transaction tax and fee, but there is nothing to tax because medical marijuana facilities are not allowed to operate in Signal Hill. Measure F does Commissioner Thomas Benson’s not approve these types of businesses. Measure FPlanning was written by an outside group with no connection to PLAN FOR SIGNAL HILL Signal Hill. No study was done to show how much money it will cost the City to run the tax and fee program or prove how much money could be made from the tax. Responsible tax measures require an independent oversight board or committee. Measure F does not require Protect the affordability and safety of independent oversight of tax spending. Measure will not bring money to Signal Hill’s Fwater supply a better choice schools, police, or city programs or to cover the cost to the City to set up and administer the tax and fee program. Measure does not makebusinesses sense. Attract moreFjob-creating SIGNAL HILL to Signal Hill City of Signal Hill Voter Information Guide, Page 14 CITY COUNCIL
