LBUSD board candidates focus on special education
Six candidates running for Districts 2 and 4 agree on training teachers but differ in their experience and perspective. Anita W. Harris Staff Writer
Two of five Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) board seats are up for election this year in March. Districts 2 and 4– covering a swath of the city from the LA River to the 605 Freeway, plus Signal Hill schools– will have new board representation. Incumbents Felton Williams and Jon Meyer did not file for re-election. The six candidates vying for those two seats met Wednesday night at Browning
High School in Long Beach to share their views on special education, at the invitation of the LBUSD Special Education Community Advisory Committee (SECAC). John Mathews II, Erik Miller and Tonia Reyes Uranga are running for the District 2 seat, with Davina Keiser, Doug Otto and Nancy Valencia on the slate for District 4. Mike O’ Brien, local motorcycle icon, Pacific Coast Cycles store owner dies at 67

“The people united will never be defeated!” reverberated through the walls of the First Congressional Church in Long Beach, as those in attendance listened to activist Leanna Noble speak about the housing crisis and gentrification in the city. Noble’s speech was part of this year’s People’s State of the City, marking the event’s ninth year. The affair was organized by Long Beach Rising, a civic engagement coalition. The People’s State of the City allows community members and activists to inform and mobilize citizens against varying communal and economic issues taking place in Long Beach. Noble was one of four speakers and listed her love for Long Beach as one of the reasons she decided to speak on Wednesday night. “I deliberately made a decision to come and retire here about five years ago, having lived here in the 1970s and 80s, and it is such a powerful place with diversity and so many pluses to this community,” Noble said. “It makes me so mad that the community is not listened to when there’s such a smart committed group of see MEETING page 10

He was a hustler known worldwide, and owned one of the oldest Harley-Davidson motorcycle shops, Pacific Coast Cycles, in Signal Hill for over 35 years. Despite numerous health issues, including two different cancers, a heart attack and congestive heart failure, he fought until the very end. Ultimately, it was a stroke that Mike O’ Brien, a figure in the motorcycle world, couldn’t fight off. He died on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at the age of 67. Mike is survived by his daughter Anna O’ Brien, 31, and a son, Mike O’ Brien Jr., 38.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 1 at 11am at Forest Lawn in Cypress. A celebration of life will follow at Pacific Coast Cycles, the motorcycle shop he owned, located at 2430 Lewis Ave. in Signal Hill. Attendees are encouraged to bring their bikes and custom cars to participate in a last ride in honor of Mike from where the service is to be held to Pacific Coast Cycles. Mike was born on Sept. 24, 1952 in The Bronx, New York. He moved to Long Beach during his childhood.
