ly Colopy, Director of the Long Beach Health and Human Services, announced that the City is reporting 1,666 positive cases of the coronavirus in Long Beach. As students begin to close their school books for the summer, questions of what the 20202021 school year will look like during the COVID-19 pandemic continue to arise. While some parents aren’t ready to send students back to an on-site learning environment, others believe students are experiencing valuable learning losses under distance learning.

Third district councilmember Suzie A. Price sent a letter to the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) last week, which encouraged the district to work with parents of LBUSD students to find a safe way to reintegrate students into an on-site learning environment. “Students are experiencing significant learning losses as well as missed activities,” Price said in an Instagram post accompanied by the letter. “These missed learning and growth op-

portunities also include essential socialization and exposure to Long Beach’s diversity of cultures, viewpoints, and experiences.” In a statement to the Signal Tribune, Price’s Chief of Staff Jack Cunningham said that the councilmember is mindful that the district has a lot of different considerations when it comes to a decision on reintegrating students into on-site learning. see LBUSD page 6

Due to COVID-19 physical-distancing requirements, the Signal Hill City Council met virtually by video conference for its regularly scheduled May 26 meeting. Among other agenda items, the council heard a COVID-19 update and approved participating in a free lunch program for Signal Hill students during the summer. Summer lunches The council approved the city providing free weekday lunches for Signal Hill students during the summer. Signal Hill will partner with the City of Long Beach in administering the California Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program from June 15 to Aug. 21. A full-time staff member from the Community Services Department will distribute lunches to students at Signal Hill Park each weekday. The program extends the City’s free school-lunch program that ends June 12. Community Services Director Ali Mancini said Signal Hill served 80 to 100 lunches per day last summer, 60 of them going to participants of the City’s Summer Day Camp program. see SH COUNCIL page 2

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, L.A. County has shut down all bars & restaurants, with the exception of pick-up and delivery. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer take-out at this time. So, we will be temporarily closing our doors until the crisis is over. Stay safe and healthy! We look forward to seeing you all very soon!
