his painting (below) depicts PFC George Torres, the first Marine from Long Beach killed in Iraq.

Next to PFC Torres is his Purple Heart medal, awarded to those injured in battle. PFC Torres’s parents live about one block from the mural site.

bove is a historical image of men celebrating the end of WWI. The Army man in the center (holding the flag) and the sailor on the right have switched hats.

The gentleman on the left is not in uniform but is wearing an Army hat; perhaps he is the father of one or both of the two young men. Above is an image of two female pilots. Pictured left is Loretta Foy, who was active in aviation for many years in Long Beach and served in the WASPs in WWII. The image on the right is from a family photo of Long Beach native Paul Bice and his mother. Paul served in the South Pacific and the Middle East, including Iraq. This image emphasizes that all veterans have families who are affected by their service as well.

he picture on the left is of Cliff Chaffee, a career Navy man, posing with his biplane in 1937. In 2006, Cliff was 91 years old and was honorary grand marshal of that year’s Veterans Day parade. The center image is from a snapshot of a group

of veterans taken at the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial directly across the street from the mural site. The wall behind the flags in the painting is the wall on which the mural is now painted. On the right is an image of Jerry Shultz, painted from the last photo taken of

him in uniform. Shultz is a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who later became a Long Beach councilmember for the district the mural is in. He was one of the first organizers of the Veterans Day parade and a major force in the creation of the Vietnam Veterans memorial.

New mural memorializes hundreds of veteran faces, one man’s legacy Century Villages at Cabrillo honors the stories of formerly homeless veterans.

He was a dairy farmer from Connecticut. She had just graduated high school. Another was following his father’s footsteps, and someone else was a young mother searching for stability. One of them became a drill instructor for the U.S. Army. Another served in the U.S. Air Force. Some of them served in Vietnam, and others served in Afghanistan. Many are somewhat new to the neighborhood,

and one of them lived the last 15 or more years of his life here.

The names and faces that go with these stories, and many others like them, are too many to list, but the life and legacy of one of these is permanently memorialized on the recently completed Veteran Mural Project in the enclosed community of Century Villages at Cabrillo (CVC) in Long Beach.

organization that provides supportive housing for more than 1,000 veterans each year.

“After I did my two years in the Army, I worked for the motion-picture industry as a stuntman,” Davis told CVC Community Engagement Director Rene Castro during an interview that took place shortly before Davis died. “I worked for Universal, DesiLu Studios, Metro Goldwyn Mayer [...] all of them. I got into stunt work because of my cowboy experience. I used to rope steers. The NAACP and other organizations had been working to include more African-Americans in film. I doubled for Apollo Creed in Rocky II, Bill Cosby, Jim Brown, Bernie Casey and Moses Gunn. I worked on the Bionic Woman, 6 Million Dollar Man, Roots...”

Described by those who came to know him around the community as kind and gentle with a large physical frame and piercing green eyes, Davis is the only true-to-life portrait depicted in the new CVC mural.

After a hip injury that required an eventual hip replacement made it difficult for him to continue to work in the industry, Davis found supportive housing at CVC. “I made a lot of money and spent a lot of money,” Davis told Castro.

“I was in my 30s, and I thought it would never end. I did it for 20 years.”

Castro spearheaded the coordination of the mural project, which he said was the culmination of at least seven years of concept-building and discussion.

“We knew we wanted to highlight Sam Davis’s story […] he was such a fixture of this place,” Castro said.

“His is the only portrait that is in a frame, in a photo frame, and the rest are more like composites.”

Castro said that after approximately 10 months of research and drafting, artist Art Mortimer– who drew the artwork before residents of the villages and volunteers painted it last spring– landed on the concept of using a variety of real veteran faces and real veteran bodies mismatched so that the veterans in the mural could be representative of the many individuals, the many ethnicities, the many ages and the many stories of those who served their country and found home in the Villages.

“The majority of our veterans are African American, so we not only want to honor Sam, but also we made sure to really honor the history of veterans of color,” Castro said.

“Because veterans of color are disproportionately represented among the homeless.”

Terry Geiling received a commission in the US Navy after earning a BS degree from the University of Illinois. While serving on the USS Cape– a minesweeper in Long Beach– he was selected to attend the Submarine Officer’s School in Groton, CT. Upon graduation from sub school, Terry was assigned to submarines in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While serving on Pacific Fleet submarines, he made several deployments in the Western Pacific to support naval activities in the South China Sea and Tonkin Gulf during the Vietnam era. He participated in multiple submarine special operations in the Pacific that ranged from Australia to the Bering Straits.

After leaving active duty, Terry Geiling remained active in the US Naval Reserve and served as commanding officer of Naval Reserve units in Hawaii.

After a career with IBM, Terry founded Professional Business Services (PBS), an IT services company in Long Beach. PBS provides managed services support for midsized companies and supplies large

corporations with high level technical professionals. PBS has been in operation for 24 years and Terry continues to oversee its national and international operations.

Terry Geiling is currently president and CEO of the American Gold Star Manor in Long Beach.

The manor is a senior retirement facility for women who lost sons and daughters in the US military, US veterans and other eligible seniors. Terry is currently directing a $56-million construction effort that will renovate all of the manor’s 25 acres of facilities and grounds.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Terry is active in the Long Beach volunteer community. He served on the Goodwill Long Beach-South Bay President’s Advisory Committee. He was the Board Chair for the St. Mary Medical Center Hospital Board and now serves on the St. Mary Foundation Board.

LTC Guy Autore, is a WWII veteran who served in the Pacific Theater. He was born March 23, 1914. He joined the war at the age of 26 and did basic training in Hawaii.

He graduated from Officer Candidate School and became a company commander for an anti-tank company. During the war he was assigned to the LA National Guard 40th Infantry Div. The troops were then deployed to the Marshall Islands, Guadalcanal and the Philippines.

LTC Sam Sachs was born April 26, 1915 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Sachs’ life spanned two world wars.

Organizers to host Veterans Day Parade, celebration event in the 9th council district Staff Report Signal Tribune

Per tradition for 22 years, event organizers will host the Long Beach Veterans Day Parade for local residents Nov. 10 at 10am to honor those who served in the United States military.

The Long Beach Veterans Day Parade committee wrote on its website that the parade will form on Atlantic Avenue, between 55th and South streets. The route proceeds north on Atlantic Avenue to Harding Street. The disbanding areas are on Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street near Houghton Park, the lbveteransdayparade.com website reads.

“The 2018 Veterans Day Celebration is back and set to be even better than last year,” said 9th District Councilmember Rex Richardson in a press release Nov. 5. “I’m looking forward to spending the day with friends and neighbors as we honor the rich contributions of our local veterans and their dedication to ensuring a safe country for us all.”

Richardson’s council office promoted the Veterans Day Celebration this week– an open-street fair taking place along Atlantic Avenue that will include officials with Aquarium of the Pacific, a Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) mobile-adoption vehicle, an obstacle course for kids, food, a beer garden, vendors and a “Vets Fest,” which will include services for veterans with various resources and a career expo, according to Richardson’s office.

All of the festivities will take place from 10am to 3pm.

13, 1918) who died on a battlefield in France. He was wounded in action at Chateau Thierry on June 9, 1918. Four days later, he died as a result of his wounds. His mother, a widow, was supported by her three sons– Donald, Derrell and Fred– before the war.

When her sons approached her about enlisting, she readily gave her consent. When asked by the Long Beach Press to express her feelings about having three sons in the war and Donald’s death, Mrs. Ada Lulu Erickson replied, “Each must die in time. None can die a more glorious death than this; but, oh, it’s hard to feel it all, all the time.” (Long Beach Press, June 20, 1918).

Donald’s body was returned to his mother. Marines at the San Pedro submarine base were in charge of the funeral service at Sunnyside Cemetery. His brother Derrell (circa 1886-March 26, 1920) is also at Sunnyside. Derrell died in 1920 from wounds and exposure incurred during the war. Brother Fred survived and helped support his mother. He died in 1964 (March 9, 1890Sept. 17, 1964) and is buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery.

nal Hill lads who died are buried in France and Belgium. Five are buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D. C. Long Beach American Legion Post No. 27 was named after Arthur Lincoln Peterson, who was killed on Sept.

12, 1918, while leading a voluntary advance to cut barbed wire before a troop invasion. Cpl. Peterson is buried in the Saint Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial in Lorraine, France.

Some Long Beach men never made it to the war. Homer T. Rathbone (July 25, 1894-Jan. 23,1918) died at Camp Greene Hospital in North Carolina. Walter Lawrence Wickham (Sept. 29, 1897-Oct. 8, 1918) died while on a ship in the harbor at Liverpool, England. Harold Moughan Ketels (Sept. 16, 1896-Oct. 29, 1918) died just prior to receiving orders to report to Nautical School at Washington D.C. Charles Edwin Livingstone (Nov. 18, 1891-Nov. 4, 1918) was receiving training in Delvin, Washington, when he passed away. Mundie Woodard, George Tupper and Theo Robinson also never made it to the war. All seven men had one thing in common– they all died of influenza.

Following a tribute to the returned war heroes and to those who would never return, the mayor adjusted a white silken streamer diagonally across the banner, partly obliterating the numbers on the service stars, indicating the closure of this chapter in the history of the city of Long Beach. For 60 seconds, the 3,000 people in attendance stood in silent reverence before the service banner, bidding unspoken farewell to the flag that for more than two years had stood as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by residents of Long Beach during the Great War. As indicated on the blue-and-gold banner, 2,437 Long Beach men and women had gone to war; 50 of them did not return. In comparison, 9,000 cases of influenza were reported in Long Beach between Oct. 1, 1918, and Feb. 1, 1919. 148 Long Beach residents died.

The flu buried more than 50 million people throughout the world in 18 months. The death rate stunned physicians. It took the battlefields of France four years to kill 15 million men, but the flu did the same work in much less time. In the United States alone more people died of the flu (550,000 adults) in 1918 than the U.S. military lost to combat in both world wars, Korea and Vietnam. In Alaska, whole Indian villages disappeared while India lost more than 12 million people. Adults with flu finished a poker game or army drill one minute, only to drop dead the next.

Although the epidemic initiated the biggest plague die-off in world history, it is remembered, when it is remembered at all, as no more than a bad outbreak of “the flu.”

So, remember to get your flu shot!

Burnett is a former Long Beach librarian who, during her 25 years of researching local history, has uncovered many forgotten stories about Southern California that she has published in nine books. But McDonald initially didn’t take much interest in the NBA. Although excited, McDonald said he expressed some indifference when he received the call that he was draft-

ed as first-round pick to the Boston Celtics, because he was busy moving to a different house.

Adjusting to NBA play required McDonald to get stronger and go beyond his thin frame of 6’6, 190 pounds. He said he learned the value of leveraging his body on his oppo-

nent for good defensive posture and being aggressive.

Mentally, McDonald said there are athletes who could pick apart those who were stronger and faster through the sheer understanding of the game of basketball.

“You think you can dominate a person because they’re not as athletic as you are, but they can take you apart, because they can think the game,” he said. “That was it for me.

I got there and learned how to truly think the game of basketball.”

Under the mentorship of the likes of John Havlicek, Jojo White

and Don Nelson, McDonald made it through a couple of years in the NBA’s 82-game seasons.

“People don’t understand how 82 games can wear you down, even if you don’t play very much,” he said.

“You still have practice every day.

You still do those types of things [...].

Fortunately, we did do a good job of ‘team, team’ when I was in college.

So, that wasn’t a big issue, making sure that this was a team effort.”

McDonald said that part of the Celtic mindset meant emphasizing “team” instead of “me.”

banners and the camaraderie the team had, you just kind of fit in with it,” he said. “It’s really, really true that people say, ‘That guy’s not a Celtic. He’s on the team, but he’s not a Celtic.’ There’s a certain attitude that you have to have to be a Celtic, and the first one is playing as a team and not as an individual. You’re not looking for the individual accolades.

As a team, you win together, lose together. If you’re good, it’s going to happen for you.”

When McDonald concluded his brief tenure in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1977, he had moved overseas with his wife, Renee, to play in Sweden, the then Europa Cup champions, and eventually play and coach in the Philippines.

He stayed in the Philippines for six years before returning to the United States in the ‘80s to finish his LBSU education.

McDonald said his initial view of the Philippines was that of an underdeveloped place, such as” grass huts or bungalows.”

“First of all, people in the United States, I think it’s getting better, but you don’t really focus on other things from other countries,” he said. “[...] I get over there– I was right in the Manila area– and I felt like I was in Beverly Hills or some place. It was just unbelievable. It was just something I never thought it would look like. So, that was the first thing. And then the other thing was how the people were so warm and welcoming. I don’t know if it was because they found out I was a basketball player or what, but from my experience and other people who have gone to the Philippines and Asia in general, the people there are just very nice. That was something that was good for me.”

As a player and coach, McDonald had access to personal caretakers, a maid and a driver– things he knew wouldn’t last forever.

“It’s just a respectful culture,” he concluded.

In phone interviews this week, Kevin Cutler, NBA referee and Long Beach State alum, and Cindy Masner, the college’s senior-associate athletics director, acknowledged the significant presence McDonald has had on the school.

“You just never know what’s going to be there for you,” McDonald said. “They were looking for more than just a basketball player to retire the jersey. With me being around the university for so long, and fortunately touching so many people, that, aside from just the basketball, they saw me as a human being, as a humanitarian. We want to put this guy in. I represent a whole lot of guys with that No. 20, but it just so happens that my number and my name will be on the back of that jersey when it goes up.” ✦

However, several community groups joined together thereafter to create the Long Beach Reform Coalition (LBRC) in opposition to the measures, particularly BBB, claiming they were misleading, as well as self-serving to the current mayor and council. They also accused Mayor Robert Garcia and the council of creating AAA, CCC and DDD as a “smokescreen” for BBB. They spoke at community meetings, shared yard signs and took to social media to persuade the citizenry to reject the four measures.

As it turns out, however, the galvanization of those neighborhood organizations was no match for the authority of elected officials in power, who, for example, had brochures on the measures slipped into residents’ utility bills.

On Wednesday, the LBRC issued a press release indicating that “corruption wins” yet a reform movement grows.

“At just over 55-percent approval, with all precincts reporting, Measure BBB was adopted into the Long Beach City Charter and will– with the relatively new local landscape of truly massive outside special-interest spending on incumbents’ campaigns– virtually guarantee minimal turnover on the city council dais for the next generation,” the statement reads. “Ironically, one of the biggest victims of this change will be Long Beach’s Cambodian community, which– after Mayor Garcia led some to believe that a Cambodian councilmember would be forthcoming if Cambodians supported all four measures– will now likely have to wait far longer just to field a candidate for a competitive open seat.”

Measure AAA, which amends the charter to authorize the city auditor to conduct performance audits– but also strips the auditor’s office of the ability to immediately acquire documents from city employees– passed by 69.87 percent, or 58,044 votes.

City Auditor Laura Doud on Wednesday morning issued a statement indicating that she was pleased that all four measures passed and thanked those who supported Measure AAA, because it updates the capacity of the auditor’s office.

“The passage of this measure is historically significant,” Doud wrote. “The Long Beach City Auditor’s Office was established in 1908, and I am grateful that our century-old charter is now up-to-date with modern, 21st-century government-auditing practices and standards. Ultimately, Measure AAA amends the city charter to clarify and strengthen the Long Beach city auditor’s authority to conduct performance audits, not just financial audits, and gain access to all City records which are necessary to perform and fulfill the city auditor’s role.”

Measure CCC amends the charter to establish an ethics commission of seven Long Beach residents to “impartially” administer and implement governmental ethics in Long Beach.

However, Carlos Ovalle, executive director of People of Long Beach, a grassroots organization that formed in response to the measures, has criticized CCC because the majority of the commissioners– four of seven– are selected by the mayor and city auditor, thereby making the commission beholden to them and not independent or accountable to the citizens of Long Beach.

Measure DDD, which creates an “independent” citizens commission to determine the boundaries of city council districts every 10 years after the national census, passed with

58.59 percent, or 48,774 votes.

Also passed in Long Beach was Measure WW, a citizens initiative that will require hotels with more than 50 rooms to provide personal emergency contact devices for hotel workers, adopt restrictions on the square footage of hotel areas to be cleaned and establish penalties for failure to comply with the restrictions. Residents approved WW with 61.76 percent of the vote.

However, the city council, at its Oct. 23 meeting, had approved, in a 5-0 vote, to adopt a similar ordinance that would require panic buttons at all hotels, regardless of the size of the institution, and other precautions in the event of emergencies. On Nov. 13, the council will conduct a second reading of the ordinance, and then Garcia will have 30 days to sign it into law.

Linda Vu, deputy city attorney, told the Signal Tribune Oct. 24 that, although they are similar, WW and the newer hotel ordinance will not conflict with or supersede each other, adding that, when the council requested a “process to prepare” for the ordinance in September, a section of the document addressed the impact it may have with other ordinances. ✦
