SPLENDID IN GREY The Big Bang Tourbillon SR_A by Samuel Ross, the second collaborative watch between Hublot and renowned artist The collaboration between Hublot and Dr Samuel Ross, which began in 2020, led to his first watch design in 2022 - the limitededition Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross - featuring an entirely new timepiece, from case to crown, to dial, strap and bezel. For his second design, Samuel turns the watch case into a grey monochrome outfit featuring some subtle yet insightfully rethought details, and to be worn on of the three rubber straps: vivid green, black or white. Artist and Designer Samuel Ross has defined his perspective through the arts; painting, sculpture, furniture, industrial design and fashion. Through the two companies he founded - A- Cold-Wall in 2015 and SR_A in 2019 - Samuel has pioneered a signature design language that has translated to numerous collaborations, including those with Beats, Nike, Timberland, Converse Dr Martens, Mackintosh, RideCake, Absolut, Acqua Di Parma and Hublot. Samuel has developed a new millennial perspective on luxury goods, particularly through his latest and most refined brand SR_A, which was founded in the same year he was awarded the Hublot Design Prize. This polymathic creative force has won numerous other awards, and has been a finalist for both the LVMH Prize and the ANDAM Award. His designs have been worn by celebrities like Lewis Hamilton, Idris Elba, Daniel Kaluuya, Lebron James, Jay Z, Swizz Beats, Nick Jonas, Sophie Turner, BTS, and Central Cee. As an active artist, Ross has been exhibiting in various museums around the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, National Museum of Scotland, Design Museum in London, Dallas Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, and Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, as well as galleries with solo exhibitions at White Cube, Friedman Benda, Design Miami. Applying Samuel Ross’s artistic language to Hublot watchmaking is exactly how he envisioned the sculpture that marked the start of his creative collaboration with Hublot in 2020. He encapsulated materials in aerodynamic, simple and striking shapes incorporating imprints of Nature’s sacred geometry to tell 40 years of Hublot history. Building on the hexagonal pattern, Ross knows how to contrast hyper-technical with traditional elements to ensure compatibility with Hublot’s Art of Fusion vision. Ross applied this ethos to the Big Bang tourbillon by playing on transparency with holes in the structure, as well as referencing the origins of Fusion by mixing rubber with manufactured metal. To assert the industrial look of the new Big Bang Tourbillon SR_A by Samuel Ross, Samuel has opted to attire the watch case

components in shiny micro-blasted titanium, extending this to the clasp which also features a rough laser engraving of the Hublot logo. To enhance the overall grey monochrome look, the crown is over-moulded in gray rubber, while the tourbillon bridge now appears in a neutral shade enabling the watch to be easily paired with one of the three smooth full rubber straps in black, white or the pop vibes of vivid green. “We are focused on crafting refined, minimal and expressive timepieces. SR_A, looks to expand, re-define and establish timeless icons of design, reflecting a spirit of innovation, optimism and craft. I firmly believe we need all three properties to usher in the next chapter of luxury,” says Dr Samuel Ross. With the hexagonal honeycomb shape and its perfect six equal sides, Ross has chosen the dominant governing pattern in the natural world. Like every single object he has designed, the watch is conceived as a durable, ergonomic and incredibly lightweight object – in this case, made to be wrist-worn. Transposing this sacred geometry of Nature into the watch,
Ross envisioned titanium plates to be polished, brushed, hammered and perforated in order to create a lean and imposing silhouette inducing a sense of motion. The Big Bang Tourbillon SR_A by Samuel Ross is driven by the accuracy and technical design of the 282-component Manufacture HUB6035 calibre beating at 3 Hz during its 72-hour power reserve. Just like the first release, this new iteration is produced in a 50-piece limited edition. “The Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross, launched in 2022, has ticked all the boxes of a successful and genuine collaboration, yet one in which Ross had left a powerful imprint through his aesthetic, functional and purposeful take on our watch, remaining true to who we are while shedding light from a different angle. His new iteration represents the next steps of a never-ending story demonstrating how creativity and engineering must never be taken for granted in consistently pushing existing boundaries to enhance our own creations,” says Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO.

WORLD TIME IN COLOURS This year’s three new additions to Omega’s Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer lineup
Omega has added three new models to its increasingly popular Worldtimer lineup - “the watch made to track every time zone on the planet.” The three new models comprise a titanium edition, and two stainless steel models in striking green and blue dials. All three watches are 43 mm, and are distinguished by their unique Worldtimer display. At the centre of its dial is a replica of Earth. Presenting a view above the North Pole, this Earth is created by laser-ablating the continents and colours on a grade 5 titanium surface. Although impossible to see with the naked eye, this entire earthscape is domed, to mimic the curvature of the Earth. Circling the topographic map is a 24-hour indication under hesalite glass. It is divided into daytime and night-time zones depicted by white and black colours respectively. Omega’s home city of Bienne Switzerland is among the many global destinations circling around each dial and its outer ring. All place names on the titanium and green steel watches, except for London, are coloured yellow gold. The British capital is in red to highlight Greenwich Mean Time, or Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). “At Omega, we take pride in our pioneering spirit and these watches are like a call to action. Go for it! Step out into the world! The dials are works of art, which prompt a sense of awe and adventure. What’s more, there is top-level technology working behind those amazing displays. They’re beautiful, fun to wear and operate and true collectables,” says Omega President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann. The 43 mm Titanium Worldtimer is lightweight and corrosionresistant. The entire black and grey dial, including its colours, is produced using a laser. There are no transferred elements, apart from the word London, and even here the red varnish has been applied by hand.

To complement the matte dial, Omega has opted for a brushed black ceramic bezel, as well as blackened hands and indexes. The latter are filled with white Super-LumiNova which emits a blue glow in the dark. Completing the look is an integrated strap in black structured rubber with grey stitching. It features an additional decorative link in brushed grade 2 titanium, and grade 2 titanium clasp. The green stainless steel watch is available in two style options: one with a stainless-steel bracelet and butterfly clasp, another with an integrated green rubber strap with grey stitching. The additional decorative link is in polished steel, as is the polished-brushed fold-over clasp. The green sun-brushed PVD dial is encircled by a polished-brushed green ceramic bezel. The hands and indexes, in 18K Moonshine Gold, add contrasting shine to the dial. The blue Worldtimer is part of the eight-model Aqua Terra “Summer Blue” collection, released as part of Omega’s 75th Anniversary commemoration of the Seamaster’s launch in
1948. The case is in polished and brushed stainless steel, while the sun-brushed dial is in the collection’s unique “Summer Blue” hue. The dial has a gradient finish with vertical teak stripes. The rhodium-plated hands and indexes are filled with a sublime light-blue Super-LumiNova. The global destinations are in silvery print. The daytime and night-time zones are indicated with light blue and dark blue respectively, instead of white and black. The oceans of the Earth are depicted in blue. Turning the watch over reveals a stamped commemorative Seamaster logo depicting a trident-bearing Poseidon and two seahorses. Like the green model, the blue Worldtimer is available with a steel bracelet or blue rubber strap. The driving force behind the new Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer watches is the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8938. It meets the highest standards of precision demanded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). Each timepiece also has a water resistance of 15 bar (150 m).

ADVENTURE ORIENTED Breitling’s new Aviation and Top Time models launched this Summer for the adventurous Breitling has unveiled five new models this summer for those with an adventurous spirit. The lineup comprises three aviation models and two for lovers of adventure on two-wheeled. Breitling’s pioneering pilot’s watch just got a lot more accessible with the launch of the new Classic AVI line, which takes the established design codes by the 46 mm Super AVI and presents them in a 42 mm case. The result is a rugged, easy-wearing watch that works for most wrists. Meanwhile, the 46 mm Super AVI assortment gets a bold new addition with the introduction of the black ceramic Mosquito Night Fighter. The third aviation model is the limited re-edition of a 1964 AVI Co-Pilot. CLASSIC AVI CHRONOGRAPH 42 In 1953, Breitling introduced the Ref. 765 AVI, a pilot’s chronograph with a rotating 12-hour bezel for recording flight times. This easy-to-operate, highly legible watch proved such an indispensable tool for aviators that it was quickly rebranded as the AVI “Co-Pilot.” In 2021, this pilot’s watch became the inspiration for the Super AVI, a line of 46 mm timepieces that honour four of history’s greatest military aircrafts: the North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, the Vought F4U Corsair, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, and the de Havilland Mosquito. The new Classic AVI line replicates this ethos in a 42 mm case. Explaining the reasoning behind this new line, Breitling CEO Georges Kern said: “People love the sturdy, understated look of the Super AVI, but not everyone has the wrist to pull off the extra-large size that gives it its

authentic tool-watch feel. The Classic AVI trades some functions to achieve the pared-down format our customers have been asking for. The Classic and Super models will now live side by side, providing more choice.” The Classic AVI comes without the GMT complication and the use of Breitling’s Caliber 23 chronograph movement contribute to the reduction in volume. However, the colour schemes dedicated to the four legendary aircraft remain unchanged: a black dial and gold brown leather strap to represent the versatile Mustang, a blue dial with black strap in tribute to the naval Corsair, a khaki dial with brown strap for the camouflaged look of the Warhawk, and a black dial with black ceramic bezel on a brown strap to capture the Mosquito plane. Colours from the aircraft’s roundels and markings add bright touches to the hands and subdials. The planes’ engraved silhouettes appear on the back of the cases, which come in stainless steel for all models, with an additional 18K red gold version of the Mustang. All can be worn on a choice of topstitched calfskin leather strap or five-row metal bracelet. The dial features “hidden” GPS coordinates of the Breitling Chronometrie, a nod to the spec stamps that used to appear on vintage cockpit clocks, including the ones made by Breitling’s Huit Aviation Department. SUPER AVI B04 CHRONOGRAPH GMT 46 MOSQUITO NIGHT FIGHTER The de Havilland Mosquito, aka the “Wooden Wonder,” distinguished itself by not just making use of wood in its
construction but also because it outperformed its metal contemporaries to become one of the fastest planes built between 1940 and 1950. There were many variants of the Mosquito, but this year’s Super AVI Mosquito Night Fighter gets its inspiration from the Night Fighter 2, an all-black two-seater aircraft meant to slip stealthily through the night sky. This watch pays tribute to the plane’s dark livery with a black ceramic case, black military leather strap, and black dial with anthracite subdials. The overall monochrome appearance contrasts strikingly with the titanium pushers, crown, and buckle. As with all Super AVIs, this watch features large, highly legible Arabic numerals in a 46 mm case. Its knurled bezel and fluted crown provide optimal grip, even while wearing gloves. It tracks a second time zone using the 24-hour scale on the inner bezel and the grey-tipped GMT hand. The engine of the Super AVI is the COSC-certified Breitling Manufacture Caliber B04 movement, which provides approximately 70 hours of power. The movement is visible through the open titanium caseback, etched with the Night Fighter’s outline. AVI 765 1964 RE-EDITION At the 1968 Winter Games, French skier Jean-Claude Killy wore a 765 AVI – a 1964 model with a black bezel and reversepanda dial - when he won gold in all three alpine skiing events. That watch is the subject of the 164 pieces limited re-edition. Each watch includes a true-to-the-time hesalite crystal, as well as the baton indexes and lumed pencil hands used on the original.

Breitling Top Time B01 Deus
However, it also features modern improvements, like the durable amorphous diamond-like carbon coating that gives the bezel its black finish. To preserve its vintage character, the watch is powered by the Caliber B09, a current Breitling manufacture movement that is manual wind. The re-edition’s caseback bears the engraving “One of 164.” BREITLING CALIBRE 01 Back in March, Breitling re-released its Top Time Classic Cars series with the Breitling Caliber 01. Now the Top Time Triumph and Deus are getting the Caliber 01 treatment as well. First introduced in 2009, Caliber 01 is Breitling’s flagship manufacture calibre. It is equipped with a column-wheel system and a vertical clutch that provides precise and smooth operation. It has a power reserve for approximately 70 hours. Its clever modular design allows for easy cleaning and servicing by giving access to specific calibre areas without the need for full disassembly. Breitling is so confident in the quality of its manufacture calibres that it offers them with a 5-year warranty. It takes 10 months of production and 1,000 tests to earn COSC certification for accuracy. On top of that, Breitling puts its manufacture movements through a gruelling 16-year accelerated ageing equivalency test. TOP TIME DEUS Hot on the heels of two sold-out limited editions, Breitling and the Australian custom motorcycle and surf outfitter Deus Ex Machina have joined forces on a third instalment of the Top Time Deus, set to become part of Breitling’s core collection. The new piece presents a monochromatic departure from its colourful predecessors, with a black dial contrasted by its white triple-register subdials and tachymeter scale. It works on either
a black racing-themed calfskin leather strap or a mesh metal bracelet. Touches of red are found on the outer dial and on the centrepiece chrono hand shaped like a lightning bolt. The open sapphire-crystal caseback features a red Deus logo at its centre. TOP TIME TRIUMPH Breitling and Triumph kickstarted their collaboration last year with the release of a Breitling Speed Twin Limited Edition bike and a duo of Top Time Triumph watches: one released as 270 numbered limited edition exclusively for Triumph bike owners and the other available to the public. Both models featured ice-blue dials that were colour matched to a Triumph Thunderbird 6T from 1951, and a rare, blue-dialed Breitling Top Time Ref. 815 from the 1970s. This year’s version of the Top Time Triumph, now part of Breitling’s core collection, retains the aesthetics of its predecessor. The Caliber 01 is visible through a new open-caseback design. The dial features a twin-register display with speed-measuring tachymeter scale, and the Breitling and Triumph logos at 12 and 6 o’clock. Its ice blue colour pairs with a choice of black racingthemed calfskin leather strap or mesh metal bracelet. The watch features a few throwbacks to vintage Breitlings, including a retro logo, mushroom chronograph pushers and a “Zorro” dial design. The bowtie motif introduced on Top Time in the 1960s has been subtly integrated using a metal brushing technique only visible under certain light. Commenting on future developments regarding the Caliber 01, Kern said: “The integration of the Breitling Caliber 01 into the Top Time range shows the emphasis we’re putting on our in-house craftsmanship and expertise. So stay tuned for future developments from the Breitling Chronometrie. Because this is just the beginning.”

SEXAGENARIAN STAR A look back at the 60 years and six generations of Maserati’s Quattroporte The Maserati Quattroporte was first presented to the world 60 years ago, on October 30, 1963, to be exact. On this day, the 45th edition of the Turin Motor Show opened its doors to the public. The star of the Maserati stand was not just its all-new flagship model, but a car that was spearheading a new automotive concept - a luxury sports saloon. Davide Grasso, Maserati CEO, says: “Quattroporte is Maserati’s history. A car that tells our story and has prestigiously represented us in the world of saloon cars, for over half a century. Since 1963, it has chronicled the evolution of one of the most beloved and appreciated Maserati models, inaugurating a segment that had previously been uncharted territory. “A car that has succeeded in reinventing itself every time without ever losing its identity, in adapting to the passage of time, to changes in society, to advancements in technology and industry, and to trends, it has become the choice of our most select clientele, as well as the world of entertainment and for the international establishment.”
38
This year, the Modena brand is celebrating the legacy of the Quattroporte, one of the greatest expressions of the Trident brand - from its stylistic leaps to innovations and technical developments. This luxury sports saloon has long served a specific cross-section of society, and its success - with more than 75,000 Quattroporte models produced - launched a new automotive segment. The first Quattroporte was penned by Frua, followed in the next six decades by other masters including Bertone, Giugiaro, Gandini, and Pininfarina. The latest and current generation of Quattroporte, however, was brought to life at Maserati’s in-house Centro Stile division, where a team of technicians, mechanics, test drivers, and designers took it from the blueprints to the road. The first-generation Quattroporte - a result of intuition and Italian audacity - featured a roaring racing-derived V8 engine that could take the car to 230 kmph. Turinese coachbuilder Pietro Frua designed the car based on a special 5000 GT Maserati, while the body construction was carried out by Vignale.

Maserati Quattroporte GenFive 2003-2012
Featuring a refined interior, it was marketed as a “living room on the move,” or a “limousine with a racing spirit.” The original Maserati Quattroporte, known as Generation I, had a production run that lasted from 1963 to 1969. The second generation, which had a five-year production run from 1974 to 1978, was the result of a joint venture with Citroën. As a result, this model had more subdued styling compared to its predecessor. While Gen I was a front-engined rear-wheeleddrive car powered mostly by a 4.1 litre V8 engine, Gen II was a front-engined front-wheel-drive car powered by a three-litre V6.
Generation III of the Quattroporte was conceived under the leadership of Alejandro de Tomaso who insisted on returning to the rear-wheel drive layout. He also insisted that the standard engine be a 4.1 litre V8, generating around 275hp. The exterior was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The car was hailed by critics and loved by customers, as evidenced by the twelve-year production run from 1979 to 1990. An armoured Gen III, produced by the Milanese coachbuilder Carrozzeria Pavesi, even served as the official state car of the Italian President Sandro Pertini.

Maserati Quattroporte GenSix
The fourth generation, manufactured from 1994 to 2001, was the first Quattroporte to be produced under the Fiat ownership. The car’s architecture was based on a stretched version of the Maserati Biturbo’s platform, and styled by Marcello Gandini. Gen IV was initially powered by twinturbocharged V6 engines, but a twin-turbocharged V8 from the Shamal flagship grand tourer was offered in 1996. As it was slotted below Shamal, Gen IV Quattroporte had relatively compact dimensions, being smaller than any of its predecessors and successors. The fifth generation is arguably the most important in the modern era of the Quattroporte story. Not only did it return the Quattroporte badge to flagship status, but also generated the kind of reaction not seen since the original in 1963 when it debuted at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The revolutionary exterior and interior design was penned by Pininfarina, and was built on an entirely new platform that was 50cm longer than its predecessor, and sat on a 40cm longer wheelbase. It was powered by the naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 engine with a power output of 395 hp.
Given the tremendous impact of the Gen V Quattroporte on the brand, Gen VI was always going to be an evolution rather than a revelation. The Gen VI was introduced in early 2013 with styling that stayed true to its predecessor. However, unlike all its predecessors, Gen VI Quattroporte was completely designed in-house at Maserati’s Centro Stile design centre. With a 317cm wheelbase, it is a considerably larger vehicle than any of its predecessors. Engine choice includes twin-turbocharged V6, V8 petrol engines, and a turbodiesel V6. In the sixty years after it made its debut, the six generations of Quattroporte cars have graced the garages of discerning motorists, from Presidents to enthusiasts, have been in the background of more than 60 films, and photographed on red carpet events. “Now as before, Quattroporte remains our flagship, synonymous with a unique luxury,” says Davide Grasso. “It’s appreciated for its refinement, attention to detail, superior performance, quality, and enveloping spaciousness – all of this combined with its timeless stylistic touch – has made Quattroporte eternal.”

HYPER HYBRID Revuelto - Lamborghini’s first V12 hybrid plug-in HighPerformance Electrified Vehicle
The year in which it turns 60, Automobili Lamborghini presents Revuelto, its first V12 hybrid plug-in HPEV (HighPerformance Electrified Vehicle). The track-inspired super sports car, with a distinct aeronomical theme running through its design, stays true to its V12 heritage while embodying a new paradigm shift for the brand. “The new Revuelto is a milestone in the history of Lamborghini, and an important pillar in our Direzione Cor Tauri electrification strategy,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “It is a unique and innovative car but at the same time faithful to our DNA: the V12 is an iconic symbol of our super sports heritage and history. Revuelto was born to break the mold, combining a new 12-cylinder engine with hybrid technology, creating the perfect balance between delivering the emotion that our clients want with the necessity to reduce emissions.” Lamborghini’s new V12 engine works synergically with three electric motors. Two are flux motors on the front axial while the third is a radial flux motor positioned above the first eight-speed double-clutch gearbox in a 12-cylinder Lamborghini. The three electric motors are powered by a high-power lithium-ion battery pack that also supports a fully-electric drive mode. An output of 1015 CV is delivered from the combined power of the V12 and the three electric motors, resulting in a 0-100 kmph acceleration in only 2.5 seconds, and a top speed of more than 350 kmph. To manage all that power, the car debuts a new electric torque vectoring system along with the requisite four-wheel drive. The latter is also available in fullyelectric drive mode.

Carbon fibre is the principal structural element within Revuelto. It is used not only in the aeronautics-inspired ‘monofuselage’ chassis and frame but also for many elements of the bodywork. Overall, the Revuelto monofuselage is 10% lighter than the Aventador chassis. Also, Revuelto is the first car to be fitted with a 100% carbon fibre front. This structure is 20% lighter than Aventador’s aluminium front frame and has double its impact absorption. The torsional stiffness has also been improved by more than 25% compared to the Aventador. Autoclave composite with pre-impregnated material is used in roof construction. The rear structure is made of high-strength aluminium alloys and features two important hollow castings in the rear dome area. These integrate the rear suspension’s shock towers and powertrain suspension into a single component. The result is a reduction in welding lines and weight, and an increase in rigidity. Revuelto stays loyal to Lamborghini’s distinctive design DNA of the marque’s V12 lineage of cars, while establishing an entirely new stylistic language through new proportions. The V12 connection starts with the vertically-opening scissor doors. The Diablo is represented in the proportions and the floating blade on the rear fender, while the muscularity and inclined front of the Murciélago are evident.
However, Revuelto introduces new aerospace-inspired design elements. The most prominent are the two lines that start from the front and embrace the cabin and engine, tapering down to the hexagonal-shaped exhausts. At the front, the shark-nose section of the hood conveys a sense of speed. The headlamp clusters, featuring the distinctive Y-shape daytime running lights, are framed by aerodynamic blades that connect the splitter to the hood. The side fins, located behind the front wheel arches, channel the airflow along the sides and the pronounced concavities of the doors to the side air intakes, which feature sharp edges that echo the arrows on the front. The recessed profile on the roof channels air to the rear wing but at the same time allows more headroom in the cabin for both the driver and passenger. In the rear, the fully-exposed longitudinal engine connects it to the double hexagonal exhaust. The latter is surmounted by the geometrically profiled wing and framed by headlamp clusters with the Y-shape light. Revuelto offers a choice of 400 water-based bodywork colours. The “Y” motif continues into the driver-oriented interior design, defined by the marque’s “feel like a pilot” philosophy. The cockpit offers a blend of digital and tactile experience both in daily driving and track environments. The visual centre of the cabin houses a pronounced carbon-fibre profile, visible

on the dashboard, in the hexagonal air vents and to frame the dashboard and central vents. The upholstery combines fine leathers with the new ultralight Corsa-Tex fabric in Dinamica microfiber, made of recycled polyester. Customers can customize the interior by opting for a balanced mix of leather and Corsa-Tex, or favour one material, with 70 colour options available. Like the car, the steering wheel was inspired by the racing world, particularlytheEssenzaSCV12.Thefourrotorslocatedonthespokes are used for selecting the driving modes, the car’s lifting system and rear wing tilt. Buttons are used to activate the turn signals and the launch control among other functions, while allowing the driver to maintain an optimal grip on the steering wheel at all times. The Revuelto also debuts a completely new Human Machine Interface (HMI) system consisting of three displays: a 12.3’ instrument cluster, 8.4’ central display, and a 9.1’ display on the passenger side dashboard. The system has a fresh look and feel, with 3Dgraphics,animations,widgetsandstyling. The three displays are managed by one technological ‘brain’ within a unified design, ensuring a consistent user interface across
all displays. The system also debuts the “swipe” function, which allows the user to move applications and information from the central display to the side displays with the same intuitive, gestural ease as using a smartphone. To ensure the cabin is roomy and practical, the roof design offers 26 mm more headroom than the Aventador Ultimae, while the new monofuselage provides 84 mm more legroom. This translates to additional space behind the seats to accommodate luggage up to the size of a golf bag. This storage space is in addition to the compartment under the front hood, which can hold two cabin trolleys. Internal storage compartments are also located under the centre dashboard and between the two seats, as well as a cup holder built into the passenger-side dashboard. Giving his opinion on the new Revuelto, Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s Chief Technical Officer, stated: “Revuelto takes a significant step forward in terms of reactivity and responsiveness to ensure the most emotive and natural driving in every environment. Revuelto is a car delivering the highest performance but our objective right from the start was to confirm it at the very summit of driving emotions.”

Company Board of Directors member Henry Ford III, former Design Director for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ian Cameron, and television host and collector Jay Leno. Created by Louis Delage in 1905, Delage was one of the most prestigious French car brands of the inter-war period. Delages were dressed by the greatest coachbuilders of the time and won numerous top awards at some of the world’s most preeminent concours. De Villars was launched in 1925 by Frank Jay Gould, a wealthy American who decided to create a small coachbuilder targeting his compatriots living in France. The company’s production was limited and did not survive after World War II.
During those pre-war years, Otto Zipper owned Precision Motors in Beverly Hills, one of California’s first importers of foreign cars and the “dealer to the stars.” While in Paris in 1938, Zipper saw the Delage and fell in love with it. He asked for the price, but the car was not for sale. Twenty years later, he met the then-owner at the Paris Salon de l’Auto by good fortune and purchased the car with 100,000 kilometres on the odometer. After roughly 60 years spent in the USA and winning major awards, the D8 joined an important Swiss collection in 2019. The Peninsula Classics 2022 Best of the Best Award celebration was hosted for the fourth time on the beautiful grounds of the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, California.

In the first year of its production, however, the marque’s performance flagship will be offered in the limited ‘SV Edition One’ specification, only available for select clients to order by invitation. The new “Range Rover Sport SV exemplifies Range Rover’s philosophy, not just as a bold evolution beyond its Range Rover Sport SVR predecessor, but also in the personalised approach we are taking with our most discerning clients,” says Geraldine Ingham, Range Rover’s Managing Director. The new Sport SV’s refreshed exterior design includes an airflow-enhanced front-end, reprofiled lower body sides, and functional carbon fibre-tipped quad tailpipes for the active exhaust system as focal points of the rear aspect. Carbon fibre detailing on the Range Rover script, front bumper blades, grille surround, bonnet vents and side vents can be supplemented with an exposed finish for the centre section of the carbon fibre bonnet. Inside, the exclusive satin carbon fibre-backed SV Performance Seats feature integrated headrests, more sculpted bolsters and illuminated SV logos on the backrests. A new Ultrafabrics PU interior is available, with lightweight, seamless, ‘3D Knit to form’ textile. The world-first translucent edge-lit gear shift paddles nestle behind a steering wheel with more pronounced thumb grips. Meanwhile, the black ceramic for the console gear shifter gives a cool-to-touch feel. Another debutant is the Body and Soul Seat (BASS), a multidimensional audio experience which allows front-seat occupants to feel the sound. This tactile audio system, from industry leader SUBPAC, is used by the world’s top recording artists
and composers. Working in combination with the 29-speaker, 1430W, Meridian Signature Sound System, BASS incorporates SUBPAC AI optimising software and transducers aligned to front seat occupants’ backs. It analyses media in real-time, generating high-fidelity audio vibrations to create highly engaging and immersive in-car audio. In addition, the BASS Wellness programmes can help enhance mental and physiological well-being by influencing heart rate variability (HRV). Designed in collaboration with Coventry University’s National Transport Design Centre and the School of Media and Performing Arts, BASS Wellness offers six specially developed tracks – Poise, Soothe, Serene, Cool, Tonic and Glow – that have been shown to affect passengers’ HRV, to either helping to reduce anxiety or improve cognitive response. The new Pivi Pro4 infotainment provides intuitive control of all vehicle functions through the elegant 13.1-inch floating glass display. It features new easy-to-use sliders for the volume and climate control irrespective of which menu screen is displayed. Also, approximately 80 per cent of tasks can be performed within two taps of the home screen. Haptic feedback provides an added level of tactility. The integrated Amazon Alexa voice AI6 and Land Rover voice control systems help drivers to keep their eyes on the road. The new Country Road Assist technology debuts on the Range Rover Sport to enhance passenger comfort when using Adaptive Cruise Control. It uses navigation data to automatically adjust the target speed, taking into account bends in the road and changes to the speed limit. The new Sport SV’s sophisticated 6D Dynamics suspension system, a world-first, offers a combination of hydraulic interlinked dampers, height-adjustable air springs and pitch control. This

semi-active system removes the need for conventional anti-roll bars, and dramatically reduces pitch and roll to maintain a nearlevel body stance during extreme cornering and acceleration. It also reduces weight, increases grip, and delivers better comfort and refinement. Riding between 10mm and 25mm lower than other Range Rover Sport models, depending on the drive mode selected, the 6D Dynamics suspension works in conjunction with a suite of advanced chassis and suspension systems, such as AllWheel Drive, All-Wheel Steering, Torque Vectoring by Braking, Configurable Dynamics and Active Locking Rear Differential. The new Sport SV also features specially developed chassis components including a new rear subframe and new suspension links with revised geometry and compliance. A new electronically power-assisted steering rack, with the fastest ratio of any Range Rover to date, is set up to deliver enhanced agility and feel. For the first time on a Range Rover, 305-section rear tyres are fitted, which are 20mm wider than the 285-section front tyres. This arrangement enables the rear-biased dynamic setup enhanced grip, stability and traction. Increased rear roll stiffness also helps deliver immediate steering responses. As a result, the SUV is capable of generating lateral acceleration in excess of 1.1G on all-season tyres. That’s not just an increase on the predecessor’s figures but is comparable to some of the trackfocused sports cars. -Available as standard on every new Sport SV is the specially developed high-performance braking system, with clients able to choose between standard mixed-metal Dual-Cast and the optional Carbon Ceramic braking technologies. Carbon Ceramic Brakes, making its debut on a Range Rover, offers improved resistance to high temperatures, a longer lifespan and significant
weight reduction. All three braking options have eight-piston Brembo Octyma front callipers, the largest ever fitted to a Range Rover, and are available in Yellow, Red, Carbon Bronze and Black. The optional ultra-lightweight 23-inch Carbon Fibre Wheels, the first ever fitted to a production vehicle, have innovative split five-spoke wheels that save a total of 35.6kg compared with the conventional 23-inch cast-alloy wheels. These light wheels were engineered to be durable, while improving performance, handling and ride quality. The Sport SV range now offers an updated plug-in electric hybrid powertrain, offering a reported EV range of up to 121km and CO2 emissions from 15g/km onwards. When combined with the 3.0-litre six-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine, the electric hybrid produces 550PS and 800Nm of torque. The enhanced electric motor and transmission make the electric hybrid more responsive than ever, reducing the time it takes to reach 100kmph by 5.0 seconds under pure electric power. Utilising both power sources, it can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 4.9 seconds, compared to the previous 5.4 seconds. Additionally, the V8 ICE powertrain now uses Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology for the first time. The MHEV system delivers increased efficiency by harvesting energy captured when decelerating and braking, and improved responses as the stored energy is redeployed under acceleration. “New Range Rover Sport SV delivers an optimum blend of supreme performance, unrivalled desirability, capability and refinement,” says Nick Collins, Executive Director of Vehicle Programmes at JLR. “It’s a visceral addition to the Range Rover Sport line-up that powerfully demonstrates the world-class expertise of our high-performance specialists.”

BESPOKE POWER The SP-8 Is Ferrari’s newest V8-powered oneof-a-kind masterpiece The SP-8 is the latest addition to Ferrari’s One-Off series - part of the marque’s Special Projects programme and designed by the Flavio Manzoni-headed Ferrari Styling Centre. The SP-8 is a mid-rear-engined V8 based on the F8 Spider from which it inherits its layout, chassis and engine. The Special Projects programme is aimed at creating unique Ferraris (so-called “One-Offs”) characterised by an exclusive design crafted to the requirements of the client, who thus becomes the owner of a one-of-a-kind model. Each project originates from an idea put forward by the client and is developed with a team of designers from Ferrari’s Styling Centre. Once the car’s proportions and forms have been defined, detailed design blueprints and a styling buck are produced before the manufacturing process for the new One-Off begins. The entire process takes around two years on average, during which time the client is closely involved in assessing the design and verification phases. The SP-8 one-off thus joins the hallowed ranks of the most exclusive segment in the Ferrari range. The car’s name celebrates its 3.9-litre V8 twin-turbo engine, one of the most critically acclaimed power units in history and the winner of the prestigious Engine of the Year (IEOTY) award on four consecutive occasions. that commissioned the SP-8 hails from Taiwan, the number 8 is also significant as it is considered extremely lucky in Chinese culture, traditionally auguring success, good fortune and personal achievement. The SP59’s most unique feature is the fact that it has no roof, making it a thoroughbred two-seater roadster in every respect, underscoring its sporty character and the instantly exhilarating visual and en plein air driving experience it delivers. This solution demanded extensive refining of its aerodynamics through a combination of CFD simulations, wind tunnel testing and track testing to guarantee a standard of acoustic comfort and wind feeling comparable to the car that inspired it. The car’s main styling theme centres around the way in which its volumes crossover and fuse into one another: the unpainted carbon-fibre front wraps around to the tail, creating a two-tone effect that creates a powerful contrast in terms of both colour and materials. The elimination of the retractable hard top allowed the designers to radically restyle the entire tail section, giving it a full volume with a taut belt line. The car’s volume is divided into two parts which are connected by a functional central area in matte black that includes the side air intakes with separate ducts for the intercoolers and engine. The upper section of this band incorporates a vent for the engine compartment with longitudinal elements that reference the lateral strakes typical of Ferraris of the past. Dominating the front of the car is an imposing full-width, cast aluminium grille made from a single, 3D-printed mould. The grille features the same strake theme, this time in a vertical movement. The spacing in plain view gradually winds towards the flanks to better channel airflow to the two front radiators. The angling of

these elements was optimised by the close collaboration between the Ferrari Styling Centre and the aerodynamics team that spent months honing the car using CFD. Other areas of the SP-8 that were redesigned from the donor car include the headlights, which have special masks and lenses, the rear lights derived from those of the Roma with specific lenses, the windscreen, the tailpipes, which were given the same treatment as the 296 GTB’s, and the specially-designed wheel rims in a dedicated colour (matte Grigio NART). These directional five-spoke wheels are exclusive to this particular car and offer a modern take on the classic rims used on Ferrari Sports Prototypes as well as the legendary F40. A clever and inextricable part of their overall aesthetic is their heavily sculpted sections and large apertures designed to make them lighter. Inside the car, an important modification has been made to the central console to house the F1 gearbox commands that have featured in the Ferrari range since the debut of the SF90 Stradale. This meant modifying the now iconic shift-gate for this specific application. The interior finish is completed with seats featuring details in laser-etched Navy Blue Alcantara® coupled with gradient effect cloth, and carpets in specific twill fabric with an iridescent effect. The matte Argento Micalizzato colour created specifically for the SP-8 pairs brilliantly with the car’s carbon-fibre section, which has an equally specific colour and finish (glossy iridescent Blue Sandstone). Even the Blu Scuro Stellato colour used to link the two bodywork sections was specifically developed. The SP-8 was on display at the Mugello Circuit during the Finali Mondiali Ferrari 2023, and thereafter, at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello from November 16 until March 2024.

GLORY REDISCOVERED The story of how the Porsche 356 SL “063” was discovered and restored to its former glory
“It started in 1993 at what back then was called the Monterey Historic races,” says Cameron Healy. “This little red roadster stopped me in my tracks. I’d never seen a Gmünd car before, let alone a roadster, and I didn’t know its background.” The “little red roadster” that the 72-year-old American had spotted was a Porsche 356 SL. A car that was presumed lost without trace for several decades. This particular 365 is not just the first-ever Porsche to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it also brought the German marque its maiden motorsports glory. There had been rumours in collectors’ circles that this aluminium-bodied car may have been one of the three examples Porsche entered into the 1951 staging of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but any obvious physical evidence to support such a suggestion was long gone. In 1952, Californian Porsche importer John von Neumann had cut the roof off the car to save weight. It had also been repaired and repainted, all but eradicating any traces of its origins. Chuck Forge, the long-term owner of the car, was also oblivious to the car’s potential heritage. He continued to display and drive the car right up until his passing in 2009, at which point Healy was able to acquire the unusual-looking 356 from Forge’s estate. After acquiring the 356, Healy embarked upon an extensive restoration. He recruited renowned 356 expert and close friend Rod Emory to complete the work. The pair undertook a forensic examination of the bodyshell which, combined with five years of painstaking research, managed to prove beyond doubt that Healy’s car was indeed chassis 356/2-063, class winner on debut at Le Mans in 1951. The story of the 356 dates back to 1948, and Gmünd in Southern Austria, where Ferry Porsche and his sister Louise had recently co-founded Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH. The 356 became the first car to be sold under the Porsche brand after it received sufficient orders from German dealers. Like the Volkswagen Beetle, designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the 356 is a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheeldrive car. Also, the unitized pan and body construction concept and certain mechanical components including the engine case and some suspension components were borrowed from Volkswagen. The chassis, however, was completely new, while the body was designed by Porsche employee Erwin Komenda. In the winter of 1949, it was decided to move the production of the 356 to Stuttgart, where it would be produced by Dr. Ing. h. c.
68
F. Porsche GmbH - the company founded by Ferdinand Porsche. While the 356s produced in Gmünd had aluminium bodies, the Stuttgart 356s would have steel bodies. Therefore the unfinished aluminium bodies at Gmünd were completed by wage workers at Tatra in 1950 and later delivered to Stuttgart. These bodies included the 356/2-063. When Ferdinand Porsche decided to enter the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans, the obvious choice was to use three of the aluminiumbodied 356s because of their lighter weight. This was a major undertaking for the still-young company, and preparations did not get off to an auspicious start. Three accidents during test drives, training runs and track inspections left just one car remaining fit to race: chassis number 063. Auguste Veuillet and Edmond Mouche started the race in it on 23 June 1951. The race was overshadowed by heavy rain and serious accidents. But the 46 hp car with race number 46 ran like clockwork, setting its best lap time of 5:44.7 minutes on lap 158, which corresponds to an average of almost 141 kmph. As they passed the chequered flag, Veuillet/Mouche achieved victory in their class and finished 20th overall. Two months later, 063 took part in the Liège-Rome-Liège race, where it ranked 10 overall. Just over a month later, the 063 set three international records during driving trials in Montlhéry. Despite its success, the 063 became one of three 356 SLs that were exported to the US at the behest of Max Hoffman after being comprehensively repaired, repainted, and restored to series condition. One car is now in Mexico (054), one in the Collier Collection (055), and one now belongs to Cameron Healey. “I couldn’t believe it at first, but all the evidence suggests it’s a 063,” says Healey. He points to scratched markings on the panels, traces of the turn signals having been moved, and a little damage on a wheel cover, which can also be seen in historic Le Mans photos. Hofman had initially sold the car to Jack Rutherford, but he returned it. The next owner was Johnny von Neumann. He drove in races and wanted to save some weight. So, in 1952, He asked coach builder Emil Diedt to remove the roof. The car was then transferred to different owners before it reached Chuck Forge in 1957. As with all previous owners, he also raced the car. At one point the 063 even had circular tail lights. The car was restored in 1981, but it was a restoration in the style of the time. Nobody asked

where or why, but simply gave the car a visually chic overhaul. On the other hand, there is nothing to complain about because all the work was done well. Forge had a small rollover bar installed in order to participate in historic races. The car was in this state when Healey first came across it. He kept in touch with Forge over the years. When he died in 2009, Cameron was able to acquire the 063. It was then that Rod Emory noticed the inconsistencies. Cameron dived into the archive in Zuffenhausen, where important documents soon came to light. When it was clear that this was likely to be the Le Mans class winner, Rod measured the other two 356 SLs with a laser, created wooden moulds and hammered out a new roof using tools from the 1940s. Following the completion of the car’s restoration to its original 1951 ‘SL’ race specification, Healy and Emory wanted to return the 063 356 to Le Mans. The car was first shipped to Stuttgart, where it spent three weeks on display in the Porsche Museum. While there, Healy began researching the precise route taken by
the works cars when they were driven from Stuttgart to Le Mans. When Healy arrived at Le Mans he drove straight to the tiny village of Teloché and the famous garage on ‘Rue du 8 Mai’ that Porsche used at its headquarters for two decades. From here, the car was taken to the Museum of the 24 Hours to take its place among a special exhibition of 80 overall and class winners from across 100 years of the world’s toughest motor race. Chassis 356/2-063 was on display at the Museum of the 24 Hours in the run-up to the race weekend and drove parade laps prior to the main race with Healy at the wheel. The car also took part in a special event at the Le Mans Classic in late June, before appearing at the Festival of Speed in the UK in July. “It felt very meaningful to arrive at Le Mans,” says Healy. “That class win in 1951 really helped put Porsche on the world motorsports map, and brought the company a lot of recognition early on. This car helps tell the story of Porsche from its earliest beginnings and this trip is really the apex of a very long journey.”

WOOLLY SWIMWEAR Vilebrequin adds two new men’s references to its Merino wool swimsuit collection Last year, the French swimwear house Vilebrequin presented the first-ever Merino wool swimsuits made from. This year, they have added two new men’s references: safari-inspired khaki and the emblematic Prince of Wales check. Along with last year’s references - navy, light grey, and classic gingham – the swimsuits are now available as a 5-piece capsule. The Merino wool swimsuits, certified by The Woolmark Company, are part of a long tradition of innovation at Vilebrequin. In the early 70s, the house began making waves at the beach with its fresh swim trunk design. Since then, no material has been off limits - African wax fabric, sailcloth, and even linen. As long as the material tailored well, it was worth exploring. So when it came to wool – a natural, renewable, water-friendly and sartorially classic fabric - Vilebrequin naturally had to take the leap on creating a Merino swimsuit. Vilebrequin has accrued 50-plus years of tailoring expertise when it comes to manufacturing elegant swimsuits. From weaving to pattern cutting and pocket placement, each pair of swim trunks demands an average of 32 steps. Thanks to their scale-like structure, worsted Merino wool fibres form a naturally water-friendly and quickdrying shell. COSMOPOLITAN EXPLORATION Bally’s American Creative Director Rhuigi Villaseñor presents his first collection for the brand Bally, the Swiss luxury fashion brand’s SpringSummer 2023 collection features a broad range of stylish and sophisticated pieces for men. The first designed by the brand’s American Creative Director Rhuigi Villaseñor, this collection blends classic and contemporary designs. It is a cosmopolitan exploration of European luxury through a distinctly American lens. Villaseñor approaches Bally’s DNA as a leathergoods atelier with a lightness of hand, and historical nods to the worlds of sports and cinema abound throughout the collection. Daywear and eveningwear collide in a wardrobe that exudes the confidence of the well-travelled. The colour palette is predominantly neutral, with shades of black, white, and beige dominating most pieces. Meanwhile, pops of colour in select garments - vibrant shades of blue, green, and orange - add a refreshing touch to the overall collection. The broad assortment of materiality includes tiger print suiting in silk velvet, double-breasted tailoring in summer wools, and shantung silk pyjamas. Crafted in Villaseñor’s hometown of Los Angeles, engineered denim meets myriad expressions of Bally leather craftsmanship, from butter-soft suede to polished calfskin, stretch nappa, and opulent metallics. Heirloom wardrobe pieces emerge in unexpected colours and combinations, from classic aviator jackets to louche tailored suits, trench coats, and safari-inspired separates. In a nod to the Swiss traditions of watchmaking and toy-making appear chains and chokers, buckles and bag hardware. A new stylized figure-8 device of interlocking ‘B’s inspired by the Bally tradition of elastic-making becomes a striking emblem scaled up and down as a decorative flourish throughout the collection. The assortment of footwear also embodies the season’s transatlantic spirit with playful details, from crystal mesh boots to embellished house slippers.

Signature White is the new ephemeral curation by Maison Margiela exclusively for its UAE and Kuwait clientele. This one-off capsule collection explores the properties of the colour white, key to the genetics of the house. The genderless wardrobe is collaged from current as well as pieces from Co-Ed and Icons Collections. White has appeared in a multitude of nuances and representations since the inception of Maison Margiela in 1988, and these days headed by British couturier John Galliano. An expression of purity, clarity, and authenticity, white reduces an object to its honest form. The desaturated quality of white strips objects of the visual enhancements immediately detectable to the eye and creates a blank essence. White is likewise the colour of the blouse blanche cotton coats worn by those who work within Maison Margiela in homage to the uniform of its Artisanal haute couture ateliers. The curation proposes a complete gender-neutral wardrobe composed of ready-to-wear, signature shoes of the Maison including the Tabi, the 4-Stitches Decortiqué and 50/50 sneakers, and leather goods with the iconic Glam Slam and 5AC. The “Signature White” selection, including styles from the Avant Premiere & Icons Collections, is available in Maison Margiela boutiques at The Dubai Mall, UAE and The Avenues, Kuwait.

ELEVATED BOURBON Althaïr is Parfums de Marly’s ode to Bourbon vanilla Parfums de Marly’s new fragrance, Althaïr is a modern ode to a universal ingredient of perfumery - Bourbon vanilla, a direct descendant of the vanilla introduced in France under the reign of Louis XV. Julien Sprecher, founder of Parfums de Marly created Althaïr in close collaboration with perfumers Hamid Merati-Kashani and Ilias Ermenidis. The result is a pronounced contrast between warm ingredients and a sensation of freshness, an interplay of affinities and dissimilarities, a blend of high perfumery’s traditional notes and disruptive molecules. Althaïr cultivates both distinctiveness and subtle opulence. The perfumers have paired Bourbon vanilla with sparkling citrus, orange blossom, cardamom, cinnamon, notes of tobacco, praline, wood and leather. A sequence of ingredients that reveal one another before ultimately becoming one in a dazzling projection on the skin.

The drēmər bed is beautifully upholstered with a woven fabric designed by Ferris Rafauli, and is based on the brand’s iconic horse insignia. ARTISTIC CONSTELLATIONS Christie’s London will present the largest exhibition of Arab Art this Summer
Christie’s will present the largest exhibition of Arab Art in London to date between July 20 and August 23, at the auction house’s Headquarters in London. Titled ‘Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World,’ the exhibition will bring together works of art across mediums to collectively celebrate the creativity, diversity and history of Arab Art. The exhibition will be presented within two distinct sections - ‘Kawkaba: Highlights from the Barjeel Art Foundation’ and ‘Emirati Art Reimagined: Hassan Sharif and the Contemporary Voices.’ This will be the first time that such an extensive exhibition of Arab art will be on view in London. It was made possible via a partnership with the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth and the Barjeel Art Foundation. Dr Ridha Moumni, Deputy Chairman, Christie’s Middle East and North Africa, and the curator of the exhibition commented: “Modern and Contemporary Art of the region is a unique opportunity to bring together masterpieces by leading artists of the Arab World. The exhibition not only celebrates highprofile artists such as Hassan Sharif but shines a light on the unparalleled creativity, diversity, and rich histories of North African and West Asian cultures. “Christie’s is honoured to partner with two prestigious cultural institutions, the Barjeel Art Foundation and The Ministry of Culture and Youth, United Arab Emirates, for what will be an exceptional moment for the arts and culture of the Arab World in London this summer.”
92
The Kawkaba section of the exhibition will display 100 masterpieces on loan from the Barjeel Art Foundation, created in 2010 by Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi. A member of the ruling family of Sharjah, Sultan Sooud is a prominent art collector, scholar, and columnist as well as co-founding the Indian financial advisory firm Barjeel Geojit. He founded the Sharjah-based Barjeel Art Foundation to promote works by Arab artists through exhibitions. The last major exhibition organised by the foundation was ‘Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950’s-1980’s.’ Presented at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery, it was the largest collection of abstract art by Arab artists. The Kawkaba section of the upcoming exhibition at Christie’s will feature works from across the region, and pays homage to the rich artistic diversity in the Middle East and North Africa. Kawkaba, meaning ‘constellations’ in Arabic, is a genderbalanced exhibition that will shed light on both regionally celebrated and underrepresented artists. “The exhibition is a rare opportunity to view in person a selection of artworks from some of the most prominent artists from West Asia and North Africa that have been collected over 20 years,” said Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi. “The vast majority of the artworks in the exhibition have never been seen in the UK before. “The works include a gender balanced selection which allows for visitors to appreciate the role that modern women artists

Launched in November 2021, Habitas AlUla is an immersive desert resort surrounded by sandstone cliffs and palm groves. Located in the largely uncharted AlUla region in the Northwest of Saudi Arabia, the resort nestles within the surreal canyons of the Ashar Valley oasis. Located along the original pilgrimage route to Mecca and described as an open-air museum, AlUla spans 22,561 square kilometres. The land is enveloped in the immense desert beauty and the dramatic splendour of human creation. The ancient site was a hub of trade and cultural exchange for millennia and abounds to this day with traces of those who passed through over the years.
AlUla is home to thousands of burial places, which include over a hundred tombs. Of these, 94 remain elaborately carved at Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They stand majestically among mammoth structures carved and refined by the natural elements. The Habitas resort at AlUla is a collection of stand-alone structures connected by serene pathways. These pathways lead guests up to the modular guest accommodations, yoga deck, wellness and fitness centres, restaurant, and swimming pool. Each of these spaces is constructed from organic materials which blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings.

All of the resort’s villas are single-storey and offer scenic canyon views, private outdoor lounge decks, king-sized beds, as well as indoor and outdoor showers. Transport between the various venues is offered via electric vehicles. The property’s minimalist yet region-specific design and sustainability-centric construction methods are part of the Habitas hospitality brand’s DNA - modular-build, environmentally low-impact design and creating organic spaces that lead to meaningful experiences. Habitas AlUla also embodies the brand’s six programming pillars: music, wellness, adventure, culture, learning, and culinary. These have been developed to immerse guests within the region’s authentic culture and natural environment. At AlUla, this approach is illustrated through the resort’s decor, art and culture walks, canyon trekking, yoga, meditation and breathwork. Habitas also curates sounds from the region’s unique talents, and showcase them for guests through exclusive performances.
AlUla’s on-site restaurant Tama, aptly named after the word “here” in Aramaic, is designed to be a gathering place for the resort’s guests. The food and beverage concept marries Saudi and Middle Eastern cuisine using locally sourced fresh ingredients. Guests are invited to gather and expand their knowledge of this historical region with weekly outdoor cinema screenings featuring regional cultural films and documentaries in addition to open lectures and discussions relating to local initiatives, culture, and history. This holds true for Ko Lanta island as well, situated at the northern end of the Malacca Strait, near the west coast of Thailand’s Krabi Province. Largely overlooked by international tourists in the past, the island has been gaining in popularity among those seeking to avoid crowds at the more popular destinations in Thailand. The award-winning property is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World’s (SLH) Considerate Collection, an exclusive community of socially responsible and eco-conscious luxury hotels. The Mondrian hotel brand was unveiled in 1996 by Ian Schrager, the man who co-founded New York’s legendary Studio 54 and introduced the boutique hotel concept to the world. Since the first property opened in Los Angeles, the brand has added eight properties to its portfolio - Miami, New York, London, Doha, Mexico City, Cannes, Seoul and Singapore - with upcoming openings in Ibiza, Bordeaux, and Australia’s Gold Coast. Design is at the centre of the Mondrian experience with hotels envisioned by some of the world’s leading architects and designers, such as Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders. The Singapore Mondrian is the brainchild of LA-based design provocateur Robbyn Carter, in collaboration with Singapore’s DP Architects. The design team tapped into the city’s rich past with a ‘deconstructed shophouse’ as the overarching design inspiration for the property. Robbyn Carter, who spent six years in Singapore living in a shophouse before returning to her native Los Angeles three years ago, states: “Duxton Hill is like nowhere else, it’s Singapore’s most happening district, it feels like a village with its preserved shophouses and eclectic mix of cocktail bars, restaurants and nightlife.” Suneeth Changaroth of DPA adds: “As a nod to the rich history of Duxton, the façade design echoes the datum of scale and proportion of the adjacent shophouses, while common

decorative elements are abstracted as architectural features. Mondrian Singapore Duxton’s overall façade is an attempt to imbue a minimalist and modern design adaptation that is true to its time, yet still responding and reflecting the traditional shophouse typology.” The seamless connectivity, built into the design of the property, extends the vibrancy of this precinct during the day and into the night. Significantly, the Mondrian public linkway running through the property for the first time connects the Duxton Hill neighbourhood with the surrounding bar and restaurantfilled streets of Keong Saik, Craig and Neil Roads. With some of Singapore’s hottest operators opening new F&B concepts over the coming months, it will create a new culinary epicentre for food and drink lovers across the region. Carter’s approach to design began with a stint as apprentice to sculptor Albert Guibara in San Francisco. A degree in environmental design followed at the Arts Centre College of Design in Pasadena, where she honed her ideas on bringing art into space. Further engagements with furniture luminaries Bernhardt and Dutch design guru Marcel Wanders followed, before Carter launched out on her own. “For me, it’s always about form, it’s always about space,” she explains. “It’s not just about putting a beautiful object there, there and there, sometimes it’s about the negative space. A lot of my design is very sculptural, and takes more of a compositional approach.” At Mondrian Singapore, this ethos manifests throughout the hotel. Carter was taken with the idea of the deconstructed shophouse. “Rather than a direct translation, we took its parts and deconstructed it into contemporary forms. We wanted to

recognise it but also reinvent it, that Singapore silhouette. To rediscover old details in contemporary and unexpected touches.” This approach comes to life in the distinctive Shophouse Suites, where the traditional features have a modern twist with vaulted ceilings and arched wooden shutters. With Murphy-style beds, the suites have been designed to transform from bedrooms to meeting or entertaining spaces. In the hotel rooms, inspiration abounds. “We love the idea of a slick glass box of the shower protruding through the rough plaster walls. The minibar we call the cloud bar, I was inspired by flying in and out of Singapore. We brought in some warm timber accents, some beautiful lighting options, arches coated in copper or steel, and contemporary custom furniture which is very iconic to Mondrian.” She also mined Singapore’s rich melting pot of cultures and trade route neighbours for inspiration, artworks, furniture and materials. “We engaged an artist to create a beautiful graphic artwork on Bottega di Carna’s ceiling and that also carries through into the rooms, inspired by the things we love about the country. This graphic incorporates things that are distinctly Singaporean, the flora and fauna, the architecture, the new with the historical and the melting pot of cultures.” Inspired by the neighbourhood’s sense of community, Carter eschewed a stuffy conventional hotel lobby for a living, breathing restaurant and bar vibe. “We didn’t want the lifts and reception to be the main thing when you walk in, it’s more like walking into a vibrant, happening hotspot. All of this looks out onto the lush
and beautiful greenery of the garden. The furniture is all custommade, very Mondrian. We play with reflections in large wavy metal mirrors, to echo the fact that there is a lot of water around Singapore, which distort and challenge perceptions. At Bottega di Carna, the show kitchen is filled with bustling chefs, flames from the Josper grill and cuts of meat displayed in a jewel box showcase. Overlooking the Mondrian garden, this is the heart of the hotel, and the space guests first experience on arrival. Jungle Ballroom enhances the feeling of stepping into a hidden sanctuary. The “secret tunnel” arched entrance is covered in greenery that lights up at night, evoking the feeling of discovering a hidden gem within the hotel. Helping provide sparkle to the space are psychedelic, kaleidoscopic artworks, and visual cocktails composed of photos of exotic blooms. With a 360-degree backdrop of the glittering Singapore skyline and the terracotta rooftops of the surrounding Chinatown shophouses, the jewel on Mondrian’s crown is the 1970s Hollywood-inspired Canyon Club Rooftop Bar and Poolside Cabanas. Retro-vibed low velvet pink-hued seating sets the scene at the bar, leading to vibrant striped cabanas by the water. Robert C. Hauck, General Manager of the hotel, says: “Mondrian Singapore Duxton’s design has a considered simplicity and an inspired approach to celebrating our unique location and culture. Mondrian is not exclusive, it’s very inclusive, it’s all about inviting the community in and providing a space where possibilities are endless.”
