We live in a digital world. Whether we own a Smartphone or have a Facebook or WhatsApp account or not, is not the point. Whether we eschew the manifestations of digital technology or embrace them, the fact is digital communication impacts all of us, and we very much need to become literate in how it functions. Our children are citizens of that digital world, and the future very much depends on their ability to navigate it and bring to bear on it the values with which they were formed. Beyond the fact that digital media is literally affecting how we think and perceive reality, it also offers those who would engage in disinformation tactics a new, potent tool. The very notion of truth is at stake. We need to educate ourselves as communicators in actively meeting the challenge with which the digital environment presents us. This issue of SIGNIS Media explores the digital environment in which all media exists today and offers some ideas on how to carry out our mission in that context.
