Welcome to Showtacular! On behalf of the Empire Alpaca Association, I can't tell you how thrilled we are to be back this year with our Members and fellow alpaca enthusiasts in-person! It's been an interesting time socially and for the industry as we adjust to the ever changing landscape. However, I found that the alpaca community still remains strong (could it be the ivermectin?). Although we didn't gather as we had in the past, we stayed connected given our mutual interests and desire to enhance the industry.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for joining us at Showtacular. We look forward to engaging with our membership to foster continued growth for years to come. Jeff Jorittsma President Empire Alpaca Association

Stephanie Glyptis — 2021 Walking Fleece Judge Trainer Performance Certifications - Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece, Performance

After graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in animal science, Stephanie Glyptis jumped into alpacas in 2000 as the herd manager for Heart's Desire Farm, the largest huacaya herd in West Virginia. This herd of nearly 300 kept her very busy halter training, delivering crias and managing the daily needs of the alpacas. A very active participant in the show ring, she was finally able to merge her background in dairy cattle judging with alpacas in 2006 when she became an AOA certified judge. Since then, she has judged all over the United States and Canada. Being certified in all aspects of judging, fleece, halter and performance, has become the perfect fit for many shows that only need one judge. Stephanie, her husband Phillip and their children Teddy and Abigail live in Weirton, West Virginia just outside Pittsburgh, PA. CHARMED

by Leslie Oliver of Limestone Creek Alpacas (reprinted from Alpaca Magazine)

Everything that I had been told about how easily alpacas give birth went out the window as I watched our first pregnant alpaca, Ivory, rolling in pain in the pasture in June, 2005. At that time, I was the poster child for an inexperienced alpaca owner, but even I knew that something wasn’t right with Ivory. I frantically called my husband and told him that I needed him to get home-fast! We loaded Ivory in his SUV, and headed to the vet school at Cornell University. After a successful c-section, Ivory was the proud new mom to a beautiful, feisty white female that we named Limestone Creek’s Charmed. Fast forward to 2020 and many births on our farm later, Charm’s granddaughter, Symphony, was a week overdue with her second cria. Not unusual with alpacas, and not something that concerned me all that much. When I checked Symphony and her pasture mate, Elektra, on a hot stormy night in June, both were quietly eating hay. Nothing in Symphony’s behavior made me think that we’d see a cria before the next morning. Unfortunately, I was wrong. When my husband did his early morning barn check, he found Symphony on her side in obvious distress. Thinking that she was in labor, he called me. While he was waiting for me, he scanned the paddock and was surprised to see a cria, dry and cushed. While the cria looked quite content, we knew that Symphony was in trouble. After three days of intensive treatment, we lost Symphony. A very sad situation, but one that I’m sure some farms have experienced. Never having had an orphaned cria, I reached out to a fellow breeder, and received both advice on bottle feeding for the cria, and support for me (alpaca owners are wonderfully helpful and supportive!). For those of you who haven’t done it, bottle feeding a cria is like having a newborn again. It’s something that can leave you exhausted and frustrated, especially when you are stumbling out to the barn for a 2 am feeding! In addition to dealing with an orphaned cria, I had to find a new pasture mate for Elektra, who was alone with the cria. I pulled Charm, now my oldest female, out of her summer pasture and put her in the main barn to keep Elektra company. As we have a couple of her daughters in our breeding program, Charm had been retired for several years. She had always been a wonderful mother, so I knew that she would put up with the cria’s antics, unlike Elektra who was getting tired of the cria’s unwanted attention. Charm and the cria bonded almost immediately. They started sleeping side by side, and Charm never let the cria out of her sight. I was bottle feeding the cria, and tracking her weight daily. I soon noticed that while the cria continued to gain weight, she was starting to refuse the bottle. After watching her for close to an hour, I noticed that Charm was letting her nurse. I assumed that Charm’s old maternal instincts had kicked in, and that she was simply allowing the cria to nurse for comfort. After all, Charm hadn’t had a cria in years-she couldn’t possibly have any milk. But when we checked her later that day, sure enough, her udder was full! Charm had come into milk to care for the little orphan. I have had females who would let another cria nurse, but I have never had a female who had not had a cria in years come into milk. I supplemented the cria until she totally refused the bottle and I knew that Charm had a sufficient milk supply. Charm had adopted the little orphaned cria, and was now her surrogate mom. Given the hectic and crazy world we live in, coming back to the comfortable quiet and solitude of the farm and watching Charm and “her” cria, I continue to be thankful for the connection to nature that the alpacas give me. Watching Charm step in as a mother reminds me that life goes on, even in the worst of times. Charm has been with us from the start, and she continues to help me grow as an alpaca owner almost daily. I am even more grateful for her today than I was when I first saw her alive and healthy after her memorable birth. I hope everyone can find their own Charm.
