WELCOME to the 2022 Alpaca Pronk! Thank you to everyone supporting our Pronk for 2022! I would like to start with thanking all of the volunteers and farms that supported us at last year’s show. As you all know, we lost our dear friend and superintendent, Sue Ives. She is sorely missed by all of us. This has been a busy year for the PAOBA members. We were able to have our annual Seminar, Fleece Show and Fiber Sort. A great time had by all. Thank you Sheri Hunt Smith and Pam Ellenberger for taking on the task for the fiber committee! PAOBA was again successful at the Pennsylvania Farm Show of 2022. To all of the volunteers and Board members, thank you for your time and efforts to make the farm show such a success! Without the members of PAOBA pulling together from set up to take down, none of this show would have been possible. The 2022 Seminar and Fleece Show is already on the schedule for July 2930th, 2022. Please think about joining us for the seminar this year. The past few years representing PAOBA as the Alpaca Princess have been filled with some of the most valuable experiences of my life. Currently, I am a senior at West Perry High School and will be attending Saint Vincent College as a computer science major in the fall. I fell in love with alpacas through the Cumberland County 4-H Alpaca Club and discovered the Princess program while showing at Farm Show 2019. After running at the 2019 PAOBA show, I served as the Reserve Alpaca Princess for a year. Following this, I made the decision to run again in 2020 and have served as Princess since that time. Representing PAOBA through this role has increased my confidence, connection with my community and comfort level in unfamiliar situations. At my second ever event as Reserve, I was surprised with impromptu interviews from two different news stations. I remember being incredibly nervous and stressing for days afterwards about how I had done. Since then, my confidence has greatly increased and I actually look forward to interview opportunities. However, my absolute favorite part of my duties is still simply standing in the pen with the alpacas and talking with the public about them. I’ve made some of my favorite memories while introducing someone to a new animal. Through this program, I have had the opportunity to meet so many incredible people, both within the alpaca industry and outside. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, my 2020 reign was filled with unique challenges. Many of the in-person events I had loved as the Reserve were canceled or downsized for 2020 and 2021. We adapted to holding outdoor events with safety precautions, but it was a difficult adjustment for everyone. Overall, I am endlessly grateful to be a representative for PAOBA, an organization full of driven, supportive, and inspiring people.
Hi my name is Lina Harrison and I am the PAOBA Reserve Alpaca Princess. I am a junior at Hempfield High School. I have been involved in 4 -H for 4years and am a part of the York County Alpaca Club. Being a Reserve Princess has taught me so much and helped me to branch out more as a person. Not only has my knowledge on the alpacas grown, but so has my knowledge on the alpaca industry. Seeing up close how people use the fiber and turn it into something is a very detailed and anal process. Being able to meet people at each show or event and continue to see them is an amazing feeling. Forming so many new friendships and mentorships from people all around Pennsylvania is something I will treasure forever.
As Reserve Princess, I have loved to be a part of the booths at shows. I am a social person so being able to stand in the pens with the animals at shows and share with the public about alpacas, or converse with them and answer questions. The alpaca industry is small yet growing. Being able to educate others on these unique animals, by sharing my knowledge of them, especially since many people have never seen one in person before. Over these past two years I have grown in many ways, for example my public speaking has improved greatly. I never used to be able to talk in front of large crowds of people but I have learned to think on my feet and speak freely. I’ve obtained so many lifelong memories and skills. Overall, I have loved the opportunity to be the 2020-2022 Reserve Alpaca Princess and all the memories it has brought me and everyone who has impacted it.
Judge Assignments and Bios Frauke Berman—Walking Fleece Certifications—Fleece Frauke resides with her husband and four children in Manhattan and South Salem, New York. She has a background in hospitality and interior design and showed horses back in Germany.
In design school she discovered alpaca fabrics and their unique qualities. Soon after, she visited several alpaca farms which consequently inspired her to acquire her first alpaca in 2014. Ever since, she passionately embraces learning about every facet of the industry. In September 2021 she became a certified AOA fleece judge. Since December 2019 she has been working on completing her halter and performance judge certifications. Frauke is enthusiastic about helping the alpaca industry continue to reach its vast potential. Ken Hibbits—Youth Certifications—Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Performance Victoria and Ken Hibbits own and operate Alpacas By The Sea, Inc. in Montara, California. They have both worked in the alpaca industry for over 16 years. Alpacas By The Sea has been raising alpacas since 1992. They managed a herd of up 100 alpacas and have presented educational seminars for their clients that provide an excellent informational foundation for success in the alpaca business. Ken is an AOA Halter Judge. Victoria Hibbits was an ARI Phenotypic screener and they have traveled together in Peru learning advanced husbandry directly from breeders on the altiplano. They have also studied and shared breeding techniques and alpaca screening criteria with some of the worlds leading experts. They have enjoyed raising alpacas in Northern California and take great pleasure in sharing the rewards of alpacas with others. Alpacas By the Sea is located just 25 minutes south of San Francisco on scenic Highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean.
Judge Assignments and Bios Robin Nasemann—All MABA Halter Classes Certifications—Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Performance Robin Nasemann was born in Germany. He attended school in England and has a masters degree in economics from the University of Lugano, Switzerland. His family started breeding alpacas in 2003 and now has a herd of 70 alpacas in the west of Germany. Since 2006, Robin is a certified Screener for the AZVD (Alpaca Breeders Association of Germany) and has screened alpacas all over Europe and South America. For several years he was a member of the board in the biggest alpaca association in mainland Europe. In 2010, he began the AOBA judging training program which he finished as certified AOA Judge for Halter and Performance in 2013. He has judged alpaca shows in France and Canada, and gives frequent seminars about alpacas across Europe. Diana Timmerman—PAOBA Halter Show Certifications—Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Performance
Diana is an AOA Halter and Senior Fleece Judge and an Alpaca Judge Trainer and Instructor currently in the United States. Diana received her Certification as an International Alpaca Judge trained in Peru at the International Alpaca Judging School (IAJS ) in 2004. She has actively judged in Canada and the United States since 2001. Diana has over 21 years of experience breeding and showing alpacas and their fleece, along with over 30 years of experience raising other breeds of livestock. Her love for alpacas and her commitment to fleece education was the inspiration that led to the purchase of The Alpaca Breeders Fiber School, LLC. Diana is also an alpaca industry consultant, educator, Fiber Sorter and Grader and working on her Wool Classer status
Diana currently serves on the AOA Judges Advisory Committee (JAC) , AOA Judge Training and Certification Committee (JTCC) as Liaison and has served on the Advisory Board for the Mid-America Alpaca Foundation, the Board of Directors of The Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies, is a faculty member and owner of the Alpaca Breeders Fiber School, LLC, and past leader of the Leading Llamas and Alpacas 4-H Club. Diana was born in Germany where she lived until she was eight years of age. At that time she came to Colorado with her parents and brother and has remained there. She was employed as a paralegal in private practice and the District Attorney’s Office prior to acquiring alpacas. She has one son, Jeff and his wife Jenessa and a wonderful grandson, Alden Ray. Along with her husband, Tim, they operate Aussie Acres Alpacas, LCC , successfully producing many of the world’s sought after grey and fawn Huacaya breeding stock. They have been honored to have exported their genetics worldwide.
