WELCOME and THANK YOU for Attending the 2019 PAOBA Breeders Showcase The PAOBA Board and Breeders Showcase Committee would like to welcome you to the 2019 Breeders Showcase. Thank you to the Members, Exhibitors, Sponsors, Donors and Volunteers, YOU all help make this fun filled weekend possible and the PAOBA organization a leader in the alpaca industry. Change. Well as the industry evolves and grows PAOBA is listening and responding. As you have noticed the Breeders Showcase has moved to a new time and venue. We embrace the challenges and possibilities this change will bring and look forward to the continued success of this event. As always Sue Ives, Halter Show Superintendent and Judy Schroeder, Walking Fleece Superintendent have been instrumental in helping us put all the pieces together. We have many exciting plans for this weekend. Enjoy food and drinks while catching up with friends and meeting new ones during the casual Meet and Greet social Friday evening. Thanks to our generous donors we have many wonderful auction items. Don’t forget to stop by the silent auction displays and check out all the great items. Saturday evening’s dinner will be followed by a fun filled live auction, including many unique lots and breedings to some much sought after Herdsires. This is your opportunity to bid on some amazing items while supporting your industry. There’s sure to be something for everyone’s taste. Don’t forget to meet the contestants competing for PAOBA’s Alpaca Princess, this is your chance to get acquainted with the participants and vote for who you think would best represent our organization and the industry. Make sure you stop by and see all the great photos at the Photo Contest Display. Our youth and state 4H groups will be at it again, competing in performance, showmanship, and gaming classes. Please stop by and show your support for these kids and the industry’s future. The Fiber Committee will have a display of PAOBA fiber products produced from the member fiber collected during the Summer Seminar fleece sort. This is your opportunity to see what products we have available for purchase. I would like to take this opportunity to update members on other PAOBA activities. Again, PAOBA participated in the PA Farm Show, with member and yarn sales surpassing last year’s numbers. This is a long week but allows us the opportunity to educate the public, demonstrate the wonders of alpaca fiber and gives our members an outlet to sell their products. Another successful year, thanks to our Fiber Committee, volunteers and particularly Beth Lutz for working tirelessly keeping it all organized. Our Summer Seminar and Fleece Show was also a huge success, followed on Sunday with our fiber collection and sort to produce the yarn and products for sales. A huge thank you to the presenters, volunteers and sponsors for helping to make this weekend a success. Last but certainly not least, I would like to extend a heart felt thank you to our off going board members, Tammy Crum and Renee Ritenour. Your contributions to PAOBA and the alpaca industry are much appreciated. To our new Board members, Diane Sheesley and Mary Baxter, thank you for stepping up and joining the Board. Enough said, we have a show to enjoy this weekend. Good luck to all the exhibitors and thank you for supporting this year’s PAOBA Breeders Showcase.

Judge Assignments and Bios

Jude Anderson - All Males and Production Senior Judge and Judge Trainer for all Certifications Certifications - Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece Jude Anderson, along with her husband, Alan Cousill, has been breeding alpacas since 1991, in both Australia and the US. Currently, they own and breed alpacas in the US, a herd of quality suris and huacayas at Pucara International, a beautiful 105 acre farm at McMinnville, Oregon. In 1994 Jude left school teaching to concentrate fully on the breeding and animal care of alpacas at Pucara Alpaca Stud in Australia. An AAA judge since 1998, Jude gained AOA certification in 2002 and senior judge and judge trainer/ instructor status in 2005. She also certified at the IAJS judging school in Peru in 2000. Since 1998 Jude has judged in Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, Sweden, and Norway. She is involved in the development and teaching at both halter and fleece judging clinics and works with apprentices to develop their skills. She has also trained British Alpaca Society judges in the UK. Currently, Jude is Chair of the AOA Judges Advisory Committee and a halter liaison to the AOA Show Rules Committee. Alongside Cheryl Gehly, Mike Safley, and Amanda VandenBosch, Jude authored The Art and Science of Alpaca Judging, a comprehensive judge training text also used extensively by alpaca breeders worldwide. Jude has also conducted seminars and spoken in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, UK, and Germany on topics including breeding, reproduction and alpaca husbandry, alpaca fiber, conformation, selection, genetics, and nutrition.

Helen Testa - All Females and Production Certifications - Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Performance Helen established Silvercloud Farm in 2001 and managed a large herd of huacayas. Helen has been very active within the alpaca community. She served as the President of the Pennsylvania Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (PAOBA), managed the PAOBA Breeders Showcase, served on the Mid- Atlantic Alpaca Association Board of Directors, served on several Alpaca Owners Association Sub-Committees, and was founder partner in Silver Penn Sales. Helen recently joined the Judges Advisory Committee (JAC) and plans to remain active and supportive of the alpaca community. Helen has been a certified Halter and Fleece Judge since 2007 and enjoys traveling throughout the country evaluating alpacas, offering educational seminars, herd evaluations, and sale consultations. Helen has now retired from Silvercloud Farm and she and her two children Mia and Raymond reside in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.

Judge Assignments and Bios

Stephanie Glyptis — All Walking Fleece Judge Trainer Performance Certifications - Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece, Performance After graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in animal science, Stephanie Glyptis jumped into alpacas in 2000 as the herd manager for Heart's Desire Farm, the largest huacaya herd in West Virginia. This herd of nearly 300 kept her very busy halter training, delivering crias and managing the daily needs of the alpacas. A very active participant in the show ring, she was finally able to merge her background in dairy cattle judging with alpacas in 2006 when she became an AOA certified judge. Since then, she has judged all over the United States and Canada. Being certified in all aspects of judging, fleece, halter and performance, has become the perfect fit for many shows that only need one judge. Stephanie, her husband Phillip and their children Teddy and Abigail live in Weirton, West Virginia just outside Pittsburgh, PA. Stephanie runs Solimente Alpaca Consulting and in addition to judging also does education and herd evaluations for alpaca herds.

Kathy Klay - All Performance Certifications -Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece, Performance Kathy began her alpaca adventure in 2000 with what was thought as an innocent little comment from her husband regarding an article he was reading on what his college's past president was doing during retirement. From there, the internet was all it took for the fun to begin. Growing up on a farm and being actively involved in 4-H raising cattle & showing horses, it was easy to see the potential of this fiber animal and to embrace raising alpacas. She has spent hours volunteering at fleece and halter shows and enjoyed scribing during numerous annual AOBA National Conference Fleece shows. She started the first alpaca 4-H club in Franklin County and has donated her time to coach various 4-H clubs around the state as well as judge 4-H alpaca events. She has held clinics and presented seminars on varied alpaca topics. She's currently the membership chairperson of OABA and an active member of AOA, CABO, and the Suri Network. Kathy left her financial planning and investment management job in 2007 to concentrate full-time on completing the AOBA Judge Apprenticeship program and is now certified to judge suri/huacaya halter, performance & fleece. She enjoys delivering her orals reasons in a way that each participant gets meaningful information as to why their alpacas placed as they did reflecting her desire to enhance the exhibitor's show experience. Kathy, her husband Earl and their herd of suri and huacaya alpacas, reside at Jefferson Laurel Farm.

Reach Out and Touch Everyone with Alpaca By: Beth Lutz, Painted Spring Farm Alpacas We all want to find the best way to reach the most people and educate them about our Business of Alpacas. Whether it’s selling the actual animals or products made from their fiber we are all seeking the best audience we can find with the least amount of work. Well that way is the Pennsylvania Farm Show. For 8 non-stop 12-hour days we educate thousands of curious visitors about Alpaca Care, Ownership, Income Streams and Finished Products. Our Farm Show booth is broken down into 3 distinct areas: The Animals, The Process and The Product. Members volunteer to bring animals for a few days to be on display. The animals adapt well to the fast paced, noisy environment. Some animals are willing to be touched and photographed while others stand back cautiously and keep an eye on the crowd. Members who like to talk about the animals can talk non-stop to visitors for hours. I wonder if any of them have counted how many times they are asked “Do they Spit?”. Members who love the process of using the fiber are set up in our Education / Process area. This year we had a wide array of things for visitors to watch and learn about. There was a full-sized skirting table with fiber for people to touch and learn about how to sort and grade fleece. We had a large needle felting machine, triangle looms, table and floor looms and lots of spinning wheels. Several Members participated in spinning and weaving a shawl that was raffled off with the proceeds of over $550 going to the Youth Education Fund. Our Member Store is one of the biggest ways we have to get Alpaca in people’s hands. Each year sales of socks continue to go up. This year we sold over $10,000 in socks. That’s a lot of people going home with warm feet. Along with the sock sales, which are a huge fund-raiser for PAOBA, Members can submit product for sale. Our guidelines are simple – at least 50% of the fiber used in the product must be from PA Alpacas. Items can be hand-crafted by the member or someone they use to make the products. This year 28 farms participated with average sales of close to $1,000! People stop back year after year for something new to take home with them. And we can’t forget the yarn. All the effort that we put into our fiber collection and sort is displayed once a year for all to see and purchase for their own knitting or crochet projects. We sold over 750 skeins of yarn this year from our Yarn Project which is another way that PAOBA gets the members involved and a way to realize financial benefit from their fiber. Every member has something to contribute. What we need most from you is your time. What you get out of it is up to you, but we are sure you will have a great time! Keep January 4 – 11 2020 on your calendar for next year’s show.

It’s Just Yarn, Right? By: Beth Lutz, Painted Spring Farm Alpacas For at least a decade now, PAOBA members have been coming together to work on a project that is very important to our industry. It’s the PAOBA Fiber Sort and Yarn Project. It seems simple enough – get fiber – sort fiber – have it made into yarn. There is a lot of behind the scene work that goes on to get the fiber from Pennsylvania Alpacas into the hands of knitters, crocheters and weavers. Because we’ve been doing this project so long, we know what is going to sell the best at our main sales venue, the Pennsylvania Farm Show. We also sell to our members who buy back the finished product for their own use or Farm Stores. We typically ask for white, light fawns, blacks and grays. The light colors are the best for overdyeing. As beautiful as the natural colors of alpaca are, many people are drawn to the vivid and complex colors that look so good when put on white, light fawn or light gray yarn. This year for example, 9 of 16 yarns that we made were overdyed to make yarns of every color in the rainbow, with the 7 remaining being beautiful naturally occurring shades, right off of the alpaca color chart. Once we have a plan for the fiber we’ve received and sorted, we send it to the mills that will process it into what we want. Each mill has different strengths, and we spread out our harvest to take full advantage of this and create products for many uses. Some mills dehair while others don’t, some can process 100% alpaca while others must blend the fiber with wool to make their machines run smoothly. Each batch needs to go to the mill that will make the best finished product based on the type of fiber that is in the batch. Once the yarn comes back, the lighter colors are dyed to a variety of colors that we know will sell rapidly at the Farm Show. This year we received nearly 1,200 skeins of yarn back from the mills. Of these, over 800 skeins were dyed and over 550 of those were sold during the weeklong event. Our Yarn Project is one of the most profitable things that we do as an organization. Not only is that good for the organization, it’s good for the individual members as well. Members who contribute fleece share in the profits that are made during the farm show, and those members that volunteer to work during the event, receive an even higher percentage of those profits. So, contributing your time and your fleeces, especially those that we use in a popular dyed yarn, will produce a check for our members after the Farm Show. We’d love to get every member to contribute just one fleece so this could truly be an organization-wide program. So, this year when you are shearing, keep PAOBA in the front of your mind. We’d love to get those white or light-colored fleece, at least 3” long, grade 2, 3 or 4 (20-28 micron). I’m sure we all have one like that!
