2020 PAOBA 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY SHOW BOOK

Page 1

WELCOME to the 2020 PAOBA Breeders Showcase! On behalf of the PAOBA BOD, show committee and members I would like to thank you for attending our show and helping us celebrate PAOBA’s 20th ANNIVERSARY! We would also like to thank the sponsors and volunteers for their dedication to the industry which enables us to make this event a reality every year. We plan to celebrate, and we have a fun filled weekend planned. Get your tickets and take a chance on some great donated items. Check out the talent of our fiber artists in the Fiber Arts Competition, and the talented photographers in our Photo Competition. And, of course, please plan to attend the Saturday night banquet and live auction- we have some interesting and exciting items to offer, including highly sot after genetics, in our Herdsire offerings. Huge thank you to all our generous donors. With it being our 20th ANNIVERSARY I would like to take the time to share with you some proud PAOBA history. As we as an organization look to the future, it is interesting and important to realize from where we have come. History in the making……. In preparing to write this I looked back on the humble beginnings and the forethought from which PAOBA grew and now prospers. A few PA farms came together and asked… Hey, how do we help promote alpacas and support not only PA farms, but the industry as a whole? From those initial conversations, PAOBA and the Breeders Showcase blossomed. And it began. PAOBA was formed and the Breeders Showcase soon followed. From there PAOBA has become one of the strongest and most innovative alpaca organizations in the U.S and has led the way with many firsts! The Breeders Showcase was first held at the Butler County Fairgrounds in tents, yes tents. Very soon though a new venue was sought . The Showcase was moved to the York Fairgrounds. It continued to be held Mother’s Day weekend until last year, when it was moved to its now current location, the Grange Fairgrounds. More centrally located just outside State College, the Grange has welcomed the alpacas and the local interest is overwhelmingly positive. PAOBA participates with the Pennsylvania Farm Show each year, which is a huge benefit to our members and the organization. With the potential to reach close to 500,000 people annually, the week long event helps introduce and educate the public about our industry and the benefits of owning and breeding alpacas. And boy has it grown over the years. From a pen with some alpacas and only socks to sell, we now sell PA Preferred yarn and hand made products made by our participating members. With alpacas to see, products to buy, educational seminars and fiber demonstrations provided, it is a huge success. Our 4H has also grown by leaps and bounds at the PA Farm Show, now competing in a day long event of showmanship and obstacles. This year included the opportunity for our Alpaca Showmanship Champions to participate in the Supreme Showmanship Championship with other livestock Showmanship Champions. PAOBA provides an annual summer seminar which is held in conjunction with our fiber collection and fiber sort. Not only a great educational opportunity, but also a great way to network with other alpaca breeders. PAOBA is the first national organization to crown an Alpaca Princess or Prince. This program has proven to be a great opportunity for our youth to grow and participate in not only the alpaca industry, but the agricultural community as a whole. INNOVATION, DETERMINATION AND SUPPORT- PAOBA is leading the way!!

PAOBA TURNS 20 IN 2020! By : Lynn McClurg, Morning Sky Farm It’s going to be a party and a homecoming at the March 2020 PAOBA Breeders Showcase alpaca show as PAOBA celebrates its twentieth anniversary! Prevented from joining another very small, organized group of alpaca breeders, four ambitious, determined, forwardthinking western Pennsylvania farms – Heather’s Acre Alpaca Farm (Tim and Deb McCarty), Highland Alpaca (Jen Lindsay and Fay Steving), Touchstone (later Backstage) Alpacas (Jen Ford), and Virginia Manor Alpacas (Tom and Parker Roth) - were not deterred, but instead took it upon themselves to organize a group of their own which they named PAOBA, the Pennsylvania Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association. According to Tim McCarty, none of the founding members came from farming backgrounds, so their initial common purpose was the sharing of information related to their alpacas, including such basic topics as where to source hay.

LET’S LOOK BACK! Established in the year 2000, PAOBA in short order established by-laws, elected officers, started their own alpaca show, published a newsletter, hosted seminars and grew the organization to a membership in excess of 140 farms from across the state plus associate member farms from adjoining states. PAOBA set the bar high as an exemplary affiliate. Over time, their show moved from a sometimes rainy outdoor location to an indoor venue, quickly becoming an attendee favorite – jam-packed with competition, great hospitality and fun. The original tabloid style PAOBA newsletter became a slick magazine dubbed The Planet, filled with articles, tips, ads and member informational notices. Educational and marketing grants were made available to members for on-farm events. 2002: Educational seminar events began, bringing in top notch speakers, transitioning in 2005 to an annual summer educational seminar.

COME HOME TO PAOBA! 2005: PAOBA successfully approached the PA Secretary of Agriculture to have PA alpacas’ status changed from “wild animals” and “protected status” under PA Game Commission oversight to “livestock” status under the Department of Agriculture. With visitor attendance exceeding 400,000, PAOBA began promoting alpacas up close and personal at the enormous annual Pennsylvania Farm Show, staffing a large educational booth with volunteer members, alpacas, demos and a display of member produced products and PAOBA yarn and roving that expands each year. 2007: Blessed with fiberpassionate members, a fiber committee was established, gathering member donated fiber to produce the first small run of PAOBA yarn in one color – white. Over the years, that project morphed into a large scale collection of member donated fiber, sorted by volunteer members in conjunction with the annual summer educational seminar and fleece show. In one day, this year’s volunteer members handled 265 fleeces, sorting and grading 738 pounds of fiber to be processed into at least 20 different blends of yarns and roving as well as member-dyed PA Preferred yarn, and to produce a credited payout and purchase discount entitlements to member fleece donors. 2012: An annual voter-elected Alpaca Princess contest was created – a growing experience for the young ladies who serve as PAOBA’s representatives in public. PAOBA also introduced Paca Games- a Facebook educational and promotional site - and have been supportive of alpaca youth activities. 2020 - PAOBA celebrates its 20th anniversary and the founders and members – past and present – who have volunteered, contributed immense amounts of time, effort, ideas and the passion to move alpacas to the forefront of fiber and made the organization what it is today. What’s next for PAOBA? Only time will tell. In the words of one of its members, “PAOBA rocks!” This March - or anytime - Come Home to PAOBA! “PAOBA Farms – Leading the Way!”

A message from Jillian Ranko Our 2019 Pennsylvania Alpaca Princess I am a senior at Butler Senior High School and I have committed to attending Penn State University main campus in the fall to major in Agricultural Extension and Education. I have been a 4-H’er for 8 years, and in addition to being a member of the Butler County Alpaca Pack, my other projects include sewing, rabbits, and leadership. I have recently taken a large step in my life by becoming the 2020 Pennsylvania 4-H State Council President. I could not have accomplished this without the lessons and experiences that being the 2019 Pennsylvania Alpaca Princess gave me. I have learned so much throughout my year, but perhaps the greatest lesson that I have learned is to be comfortable with going outside of my comfort zone. Being a representative of an industry requires one to be able to think on their feet and effectively communicate with others. There were some times where I was nervous to speak to someone, had to deliver an impromptu speech, or was otherwise stretched outside of my comfort zone. I got in the habit of being okay with going outside of my comfort zone, which made it greatly expand, and now I have no troubles talking to anyone and everyone! I have had so many incredible moments this year at the 31 events I have attended, and to pick one to highlight I would choose the State Grange Convention. I had attended the convention in 2018 because it was held in my county, and I knew I couldn’t pass up attending another year because of the kind Grange community. During this weekend long event I met so many incredible people including government officials, fellow queens, and many lovely grangers. That event introduced me to many people that I would see multiple more times throughout the year and be able to make those connections earlier. Overall, I am so incredibly grateful and blessed for the opportunity to have been your 2019 Pennsylvania Alpaca Princess. Thank you!

A HUGE THANK YOU to JILLIAN RANKO 2019 PAOBA PRINCESS!!! Jillian has done on outstanding job in representing the Alpaca Industry across the state of PA during the past year. She has attended numerous Fairs, Farm events, MAPACA, Buckeye, Farm City Days, has appeared with Miss Pennsylvania at events and much more. When she was crowned, we were impressed with her poise, confidence, presence and overall knowledge of alpacas. However, she has continued to grow in all areas over the past year in fulfilling her role as PAOBA Princess. We are appreciative that this experience has helped prepare her for her next endeavor-being the 2020 Pennsylvania 4-H State President! Wow, great for her personally, and, a great opportunity for PAOBA for her to share alpacas with even more Pennsylvanians. Congratulations to her parents for raising such a confident, poised child. You all are a great example to others. Our PAOBA Reserve Princess, Cassandra Lanza, has also been very busy this past year, often helping Jillian at various events. We wish both ladies the best of luck in all their future endeavors. THANK YOU for a job very well done!! The Pennsylvania Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association

Stephanie Glyptis—Female Halter Judge Trainer Performance Certifications - Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece, Performance After graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in animal science, Stephanie Glyptis jumped into alpacas in 2000 as the herd manager for Heart's Desire Farm, the largest huacaya herd in West Virginia. This herd of nearly 300 kept her very busy halter training, delivering crias, and managing the daily needs of the alpacas. A very active participant in the show ring, she was finally able to merge her background in dairy cattle judging with alpacas in 2006 when she became an AOA Certified Judge. Since then, she has judged all over the United States and Canada. Being certified in all aspects of judging fleece, halter, and performance has become the perfect fit for many shows that only need one judge. Stephanie, her husband Phillip, and their children Teddy and Abigail live in Weirton, West Virginia just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Stephanie runs Glyptis Manor Alpacas and in addition to judging provides education and herd evaluations for alpacas. He judged his first show in 2006 and has judged over 45 shows both in the US and Canada. David served a 3-year term on the AOBA board serving as Secretary and President. Promoting youth involvement in alpacas he has been instrumental in developing alpaca youth judging contests throughout the US. To expand his knowledge of livestock, David is currently enrolled in Graduate Studies at Colorado State University. After serving 29 years in the fire service David continues to serve as a soldier in the California State Military Reserve and Mission Pilot in the Civil Air Patrol. He works in the alpaca industry dividing his time between his ranch, judging, and teaching seminars. In 2006, together with his wife Brenda, they started ACE, Alpaca Continuing Education, which provides cutting edge training and education for the alpaca breeder.
