WELCOME and THANK YOU for Attending the 2019 BUCKEYE ALPACA SHOW Dear Exhibitors, Vendors and Guests, Welcome to the 15th annual Buckeye Alpaca Show! To celebrate this milestone, we have published this color Show Book to recognize the many sponsors whose contributions continue to make this show a great success. A little history - plans for the Buckeye Alpaca Show started in the spring of 2004 when PAOBA, our regional spring show, announced it was moving from Butler to York, PA. At the urging of Ohio breeders, Nancy Medland and I contacted the Ohio State Expo in Columbus, and secured the earliest available date, the first weekend of May, for an Ohio-based Spring show. Not being associated with an affiliate, we incorporated the new event as a Public Charity 501c3 corporation. We adopted a corporate mission to donate our profits to support education, medicine and scientific research in the camelid industry. History repeated itself, and in November 2018, to continue the tradition of a fall Ohio-based regional show, we debuted the Buckeye Alpaca Fall Fest. Over the past 14 years the funds raised from our many silent auctions, live auctions, and sponsorships from exhibitors and corporations have been donated to programs at the Ohio State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. In total, these donations have exceeded $335,000. The commonality I see in the efforts of the Buckeye Alpaca Show and its many exhibitors, sponsors, and corporate sponsors is the desire to make a difference in the lives we touch. We have exceptional competition and yet we maintain open and inviting relationships with great camaraderie. We are open to new ideas and work hard to make our industry a success. Keen competition affords us the opportunity to evaluate the results of our breeding programs. To further this education, Buckeye Alpaca Show was among the first shows in the US to debut the walking fleece competition. Last November we took education and opportunity one step further by debuting the Novice Small Breeder class. We have included Mentoring for new breeders and “Ask the Vet” guidance for all attendees. In 2018 we revamped the Camelid Veterinary Conferences at Ohio State University, increasing the attendance of camelid veterinarians and providing affordable education to owners and breeders. Recognizing the rapidly decreasing availability of large animal veterinarians throughout the US, we established the Buckeye Large Animal Veterinary Fund at OSU to provide Scholarships exclusively to Large Animal and Equine 3 rd and 4th year veterinary students. The auctions at Buckeye Alpaca Fall Fest raised $20,000 that has been donated to OSU and will fund four $5,000 scholarships to be awarded by OSU this April. The many fundraising efforts at this year’s show will be directed to support the 2020 Camelid Veterinary Conference at OSU, the 2020 Owner/Breeder Conference at OSU and the Buckeye Large Animal Veterinary Scholarship fund. In closing, we are immensely grateful for your ongoing support and will strive to continue to “Be the Model” and “Make a Difference!” Mary Reed Event Manager and Trustee, Buckeye Alpaca Show, Inc.
