WELCOME and THANK YOU for Attending the 2021 BUCKEYE ALPACA SHOW

Dear Exhibitors, Vendors and Guests, Welcome to the 17th annual Buckeye Alpaca Show! What a journey these 17 years have been – the cover of this year’s show program takes you down memory lane! I am so excited that our show continues to attract new and established breeders and that our halter entries this March again exceed 500 alpacas. We are totally sold out of sponsorships, stall space and walking fleece! We have many farms that are joining us for the first time. I look forward to introducing them to our Buckeye traditions – fierce, but friendly, competition in the showring, exceptional fundraising in our live and silent auctions, and lasting relationships and memories. I strive to make this show your Favorite Show! This year we will bring back our Pen Sale – your opportunity to purchase exceptional alpacas from established breeders and sponsors of the show – by private treaty. Make a point of checking them out – this is a great time to add to your breeding program with new genetics! We are amplifying our mentoring program with two seminars Friday afternoon on Alpaca Analysis and Placements by Wade Gease, followed by the new “Spotlight on the Showring” presentation on “Best Practices for Success!” by Amanda VandenBosch. Changing things up a bit, our Live Auction, will take place Saturday night here in the show ring, accompanied by your favorite beverages and delicious appetizers. Bid high and often to obtain fantastic and valuable auction items and take pride that your investment is helping us continue to make an impact on Camelid Medicine. In the past 5 months we have devoted these funds to hosting two virtual Camelid Veterinary Conferences at OSU; a virtual Owner/Breeder Veterinary Conference, co-sponsored by MAPACA, PAOBA, EAA and CABO; and $15,000 in Scholarships for OSU Veterinary Students. Due to continuing concern for everyone’s health and safety, we are housing most of our vendors in the adjacent Virginia O’Casek Hall. Please be sure to support our vendors, inquire about wholesale accounts and take the time to restock your farm store with their fabulous alpaca treasures. There is a nation-wide surge in public interest to view our alpacas and wear the exceptional clothing fashioned from their fiber. In closing – I wish to reiterate that I am immensely grateful for your continued support of The Buckeye Alpaca Show and our industry! Mary Reed Event Manager and Trustee, Buckeye Alpaca Show, Inc.

Meet the Judges Amanda VandenBosch — Judging Male Huacaya and Suri, Bred and Owned Males, Group Performance Amanda VandenBosch is a Senior AOA Halter and Fleece Judge and an Alpaca Judge Trainer and Instructor in the United States. Amanda qualified as an International Alpaca Judge trained in Peru at the International Alpaca Judging School (IAJS ) in 2000. She has judged shows in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and Peru gaining an international perspective and true love for the art and science of alpaca judging. Amanda travels worldwide judging alpacas, instructing, presenting seminars and workshops to breeders and judges. Her “hands on” approach is greatly sought after. Amanda worked with the British Alpaca Society (BAS) for 7 years to help develop the Judge Training Program, and with the New Zealand Judges for continuous training. She has been honored with regular appointments as an AOA Senior Instructor and Judge Trainer in both Fleece and Halter in the USA. Amanda has spent many hours volunteering over the years at AOBA National Conferences and regional events. She has participated on numerous committees. She is past president of CALPACA a Regional Affiliate and past co-chair of the Judges Advisory Committee (JAC). Currently she acts as a liaison for the Judge Training & Certification Committee. Amanda has had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading experts in the study of alpacas. Amanda is a native of the United Kingdom. She traveled and worked for The National Stud (UK) Lindsay Park Stud (Australia) and Lanes End Farm (Kentucky, USA) the premier thoroughbred breeding operations worldwide. In 1991 she settled in the USA. For the last 23 years, Amanda has been involved with alpacas in all aspects. Amanda is also a co-author of the book “The Art & Science of Alpaca Judging” published by AOBA and used as a training tool. With her husband, Vince, and two sons, Cody and Hunter, they operate Flying Dutchman Alpacas, in Bend, Oregon, successfully raising both huacayas and suris. Along with raising high quality breeding stock, they also own a partnership in Spring Harvest Mill, completing the circle of taking fleece to processing and end use, with these fine products being offered for sale at their local business Tumalo Coffee House

Sharon Loner – Judging Female Huacaya and Suri, Bred and Owned Female, Group Performance Sharon Loner and her husband, Frank, purchased their first alpacas in 1993 and are the owners of Mile High Alpacas located in Parker, Colorado. Sharon soon learned that raising these beautiful animals was her calling and within three years she left her professional career as a property and casualty insurance broker to become an alpaca rancher full time. Sharon is both AOA and Internationally Certified to judge fleece, halter, and performance alpaca shows. In 2004 she completed her international judging training through the International Alpaca Judging School (IAJS) located in Peru by Maggie Krieger and Dr. Julio Sumar and that same year became AOBA certified. Sharon remains an active member with Alpaca Owners Association, Inc. (AOA); serving previously as Vice President and currently as Secretary of her local affiliate, the Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies, (ABR); and has been a director for the Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America (AFCNA). Sharon graduated from North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota, with a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education and Textiles. Sharon and Frank have two daughters. Carly who has earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in Emergency Medicine from University of Wisconsin is currently working in Rochester, New York. Jaclyn, is in her 2nd year of Physician Assistant (PA) school in Denver, Colorado. Sharon’s husband, Frank, retired in 2012 after 33 years of operating a Chick-Fil-A quick service restaurant in Aurora, Colorado. Frank is now a full time ranch hand, maintenance, and “honey doer”. In addition to judging, Sharon obtained her real estate license and joined RE/MAX, Inc specializing in farm and ranch properties and downsizing while serving the discerned population of “baby boomers.” Sharon’s goal while in the show ring is to see that every exhibitor and their alpaca are comfortable, relaxed, while at the same time having an enjoyable experience. She makes sure each and every alpaca is evaluated consistently and fairly on a comparative basis within their individual classes. In the fleece show, she treats each fleece with respect and judges on an absolute basis as specified by the AOA show division rules.

Stephanie Glyptis — Judging Walking Fleece After graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in animal science, Stephanie Glyptis jumped into alpacas in 2000 as the herd manager for Heart's Desire Farm, the largest huacaya herd in West Virginia. This herd of nearly 300 kept her very busy halter training, delivering crias, and managing the daily needs of the alpacas. A very active participant in the show ring, she was finally able to merge her background in dairy cattle judging with alpacas in 2006 when she became an AOA Certified Judge. Since then, she has judged all over the United States and Canada. Being certified in all aspects of judging fleece, halter, and performance has become the perfect fit for many shows that only need one judge. Stephanie, her husband Phillip, and their children Teddy and Abigail live in Weirton, West Virginia just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Stephanie runs Glyptis Manor Alpacas and in addition to judging provides education and herd evaluations for alpacas

Laurel Shouvlin – Walking Fleece, Youth Performance Laurel Shouvlin and her husband Tim have been raising alpacas since 1997 on Bluebird Hills Farm in Springfield, Ohio. Laurel has been fascinated with the camel family since her childhood and has also enjoyed working with natural fibers, learning to weave, knit and spin while in high school. All facets of the alpaca industry appeal to her, including husbandry, fiber arts, veterinary medicine, breeding and birthing, and the show ring. She first considered becoming a judge after volunteering as a ring steward at various shows. Laurel believes the show ring is one of the best tools available to breeders to continue to improve both the fiber and conformation of alpacas in North America. The show ring also provides a great opportunity to help educate breeders about fleece and conformation. Laurel has served as editor and publisher of the Ohio Alpaca Breeders Association magazine, Ohio Alpaca Life, as a director for the ARI, AOA, and the Suri Network. She feels privileged to have the opportunity to evaluate North American alpacas and their fleeces in AOA and international competitions.
