A message from Cassie Lanza 2020 PA Alpaca Princess I am currently a junior at West Perry High School, where I am involved in cross country, track, concert band, and the National Honors Society. Outside of school, I have been a member of the Cumberland County 4-H Alpaca Club for four years. My other interests include computer programming, reading, and gardening. In the future, I hope to pursue higher education with a computer science or physics degree. Although my reign as the 2020-2021 Pennsylvania Alpaca Princess has had its fair share of challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, I was able to gain valuable experiences while adapting to a new reality. From my year as the 2019-2020 Reserve Alpaca Princess, I had learned in -person conversational and interviewing skills. I had become comfortable in situations I was previously nervous about. However, from last year’s virtual princess contest onward, I’ve had to adapt those skills to the online world. Any events I was able to attend were small and outdoors, and the new norm became Zoom meetings and phone calls. Social media became a valuable tool to connect with others and advertise the alpaca industry. I hope to continue developing these skills and utilizing online platforms to better connect with the public. One benefit of the countless closures was my sudden availability to attend shearing day, a fiber sort, and a fiber dying event all for the first time. While perhaps not the most glamorous events of my representative career, I felt closer to my community and loved learning more through these handson experiences. I’m grateful for the strange year I’ve had, and I’m excited to see what the future brings.
A message from Angelina Harrison 2020 PA Reserve Alpaca Princess Hi my name is Lina Harrison and I am the PAOBA Reserve Princess. I am 15 years old and in 10th grade. One of my hobbies is playing basketball. I participate in school basketball and AAU basketball. Another hobby is going to 4-H practice every Saturday. COVID has really made this year a struggle with restrictions on the amount of people at events. With the few events I was able to go to, they were amazing. Quarantine had an impact on so many people and having COVID friendly events where people could come out and see the alpacas was so heartwarming. The events were almost like an escape from the real world. It was really fun to be able to interact with kids, adults and see everyone’s smiles when seeing the alpacas. I have loved all the people I’ve been able to meet on my journey because everyone has been so sweet and kind. Being Reserve Princess has been an amazing experience and I can’t wait to continue the remainder of the year.

Judge Assignments and Bios Helen Testa — Pennsylvania Halter Show Certifications - Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Performance Helen established Silvercloud Farm in 2001 and managed a large herd of huacayas. Helen has been very active within the alpaca community. She served as the President of the Pennsylvania Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (PAOBA), managed the PAOBA Breeders Showcase, served on the Mid- Atlantic Alpaca Association Board of Directors, served on several Alpaca Owners Association Sub-Committees, and was founder partner in Silver Penn Sales. Helen recently joined the Judges Advisory Committee (JAC) and plans to remain active and supportive of the alpaca community. Helen has been a certified Halter and Fleece Judge since 2007 and enjoys traveling throughout the country evaluating alpacas, offering educational seminars, herd evaluations, and sale consultations. Helen has now retired from Silvercloud Farm and she and her two children Mia and Raymond reside in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.
Stephanie Glyptis — Maryland Halter Show Certifications - Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece, Performance
After graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in animal science, Stephanie Glyptis jumped into alpacas in 2000 as the herd manager for Heart's Desire Farm, the largest huacaya herd in West Virginia. This herd of nearly 300 kept her very busy halter training, delivering crias, and managing the daily needs of the alpacas. A very active participant in the show ring, she was finally able to merge her background in dairy cattle judging with alpacas in 2006 when she became an AOA Certified Judge. Since then, she has judged all over the United States and Canada. Being certified in all aspects of judging fleece, halter, and performance has become the perfect fit for many shows that only need one judge. Stephanie, her husband Phillip, and their children Teddy and Abigail live in Weirton, West Virginia just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Stephanie runs Glyptis Manor Alpacas and in addition to judging provides education and herd evaluations for alpacas. Judge Assignments and Bios Wade Gease — All Walking Fleece Certifications: Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece, Performance Wade Gease is an AOA certified senior alpaca judge, judge training instructor, presenter, designer and consultant/mediator for the worldwide alpaca industry. He was the previous co-owner of LondonDairy Alpacas for 18 years. He now unveils his own wholesale/retail product line as The Alpaca Guy.
Wade has been honored to be involved with so many different activities in the alpaca world: presenting his personal educational seminars at pen sales, consulting, commentating, coordinating for auctions, and evaluating for private alpaca breeders. A favored activity has been leading yearly educational trips throughout Peru. In 2021 he will host a Fiesta Alpaca trip in April because of a scheduled alpaca show in Cusco. Contact him to be put on his notification list. Wade was the first to produce a N.A. made alpaca bamboo fabric. Thereafter, he created an upscale clothing line highlighting alpaca fabric, Alpaca Couture. The company’s vision was to gain greater attention from a discriminating consumer and help the industry gain greater recognition as an attractive fiber for fashion. Fashion shows were presented in Las Vegas, Orange County, and San Diego. The business transitioned into the accessory lines of The Alpaca Guy. Wade helps with Fashion Show/ Auction coordinations at different venues and shows like AOA. Mr. Gease also forged ahead in making alpaca materials, designing alpaca products and has created a wet felting machine for home/farm use to empower ranches to make on the farm products, The Wet Felting Wizard. It has had over 25,000 views on YouTube and has sold as far as the Netherlands, France & South Africa. Wade earned an Associate’s Degree in Aeronautical Science, a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, and a Masters Degree in Biochemistry. He is also a Camelid Fibre Sorter certified from Olds College Natural Fibre Centre, Canada. His past has given him experience in construction, was a certified flight instructor, chemistry instructor, co-owner of a gift and floral store, and a professional sales representative for multiple pharmaceutical companies. He enjoys scuba diving, home improvement projects, and anything related to alpaca fiber!
Laurel Shouvlin — All Youth Activities Certifications: Huacaya Halter, Suri Halter, Fleece, Walking Fleece, Performance
Laurel Shouvlin and her husband Tim have been raising alpacas since 1997 on Bluebird Hills Farm in Springfield, Ohio. Laurel has been fascinated with the camel family since her childhood and has also enjoyed working with natural fibers, learning to weave, knit and spin while in high school. All facets of the alpaca industry appeal to her, including husbandry, fiber arts, veterinary medicine, breeding and birthing, and the show ring. She first considered becoming a judge after volunteering as a ring steward at various shows. Laurel believes the show ring is one of the best tools available to breeders to continue to improve both the fiber and conformation of alpacas in North America. The show ring also provides a great opportunity to help educate breeders about fleece and conformation. Laurel has served as editor and publisher of the Ohio Alpaca Breeders Association magazine, Ohio Alpaca Life, as a director for the ARI, AOA, and the Suri Network. She feels privileged to have the opportunity to evaluate North American alpacas and their fleeces in AOA and international competitions. 29
