HAPPY HOLIDAYS

FROM SECOND ACT In this festive season, one of the first things that pops into our heads is the gifts. The beauty is, there are so many of them! Whether in a box, in the form of talents or in the form of friends and family, we give and receive gifts every day! For us, it’s a gift every time one of you says, “Thank you, I learned a lot” or “that was so much fun!” It certainly makes our job so rewarding. It’s a gift that you give time to be with us. Whether volunteering, traveling or attending a class or event, you remind us to get out there and make the most of it! It’s a gift that we have some talented physicians and specialists in the area to take care of us. And we treasure the fact that they are willing to share their time with us. Your smile is a gift to others you meet at our functions. Seeing you make friends is one of our favorite things. We see your gift of compassion show through when you look out for others on trips or at events. Some of you have artistic gifts that you showcase. Others have gifts of knowledge that you share. As for Second Act, it’s a gift to the community to have a program designed especially for folks like you. We are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your lives.

One thing is for certain, life is a gift. You take an active role in living a healthy one. As a healthcare organization, what more could we ask for? Thanks for being members of Second Act. Blessings to you and yours during this holiday season. May your gifts be plentiful, whether given or received!

SIH

NEWS

URGENT CARE CLINIC IN MARION IS NOW OPEN The SIH Urgent Care is now open 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm. The clinic is located in front of the Marion WalMart at 2808 East Outer Drive. Individuals can get medical treatment in a non-emergency situation when their primary care doctor isn’t available. The clinic treats illness and symptoms like allergies, abrasions, burns, cuts, infections, sprains, vomiting and other minor illnesses and injuries. Patients are able to control their experience through online check-in, which allows them to view current wait times and reserve an arrival time that works for them, including “next available.” Patients are later sent a text message reminder on what time they should arrive at the urgent care clinic. Reserving your appointment is easy to do- just visit www.sih.net/urgentcare and click on the red button. Enter the proper contact information, select an appointment time and then click “confirm.”

NEW IN 2019: REGISTRATION CALL DATES FOR CLASSES For the last few months Second Act has experienced a fruitful dilemma. Most of our classes now fill up early. It’s neat to see the increased interest in the classes. We recognize however, they are filling prior to some receiving their newsletters in the mail. Although we do post the newsletter at www.sih.net/secondact, not everyone has access to the internet. In the best interest of all members, beginning January 2019, a registration date will be scheduled for all classes. In a similar fashion to our trip call dates, you will need to call in on or after the designated date starting at 9:00 AM. Be watching for the date in the next newsletter.

Please register for Second Act classes, trips and special events by calling 877.480.4040

WE’RE GOING CAROLING! FALALALALA!

One of the things most people like about the holiday season is the music. And what better way to share it than by going door to door with a group of friends and singing your heart out? Not only does singing feel great, it is great for body and mind. Studies have linked group singing with the release of feel-good hormones like oxytocin, which can amp up tolerance for pain; and the reduction of stressrelated hormones like cortisol, which can boost immune system function. Let’s meet at the SIH Corporate office at the University Mall. Together, we will travel to Murphysboro, Carbondale, Herrin and Marion to brighten the day for residents of local assisted living facilities. A good singing voice is not a requirement!

TIPS TO BEING MINDFUL OVER THE HOLIDAYS! With the fall leaves turning we begin to look forward to the holiday season. As it approaches we anticipate all the fuss and stress that also comes with the travel, big meals, relatives/relationships, and financial stress to cover the cost of the season of holiday joy and family times. Making sure you stay in touch with the realities of what you can and can’t do can be difficult at times. It is always hard to share with others some of the emotions you may feel due to changes in your health and strength levels. This may apply to those who are in a caring role and want to address these needs in an empathetic but respectful way. Don’t assume that someone you love or care for can’t do anything like they used to. Help problem solve what they feel is reasonable for them. Here are seven tips about being mindful.

Good communication is important. Don’t just dictate what is going to happen but listen also to what is wanted. Realistic goals can be attained this way and emotional needs met.

If you are traveling, remember to stay well hydrated, travel at non-peak times and arrange for a rest period at the end of your trip.

Easy on the alcohol! Some medications don’t mix well with it and balance can be impaired quickly. A fall would sure put a crimp in your travel plans.

If you exercise regularly keep up your routine; you’ll feel better if you do.

Keep to your diet whatever it is; diabetic, cardiac, gluten free and choose healthy choices.

If sad thoughts occur due to loneliness, loss or changes in your life, those feelings are normal and it’s ok to feel them. You can then remember the good memories and take your time with these as they can still give you joy to feel!

Lower your anxiety by reducing your expectations and be here right now, and remember that right now you are ok and you will be tomorrow also.

I hope these few tips have been helpful towards being mindful over the coming holiday season in finding ways to enjoy this time of year! Sincerely, Cathy Schweizer MS LCPC Director for the Center for Senior Renewal St. Joseph Memorial Hospital
