Second Act

A free program for adults 50 and beyond

Memorial Day Memorial Day came about to honor men and women who sacrifice their life while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day started in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. The holiday was first called Decoration Day and was mostly observed by the northern states. After WWI the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars. Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 for decades which was the date General John A. Logan selected. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which is why we now celebrate on the last Monday in May. Traditions include parades that incorporate military personnel and members of veteran organizations. One of the largest parades takes place in Chicago. Other traditions include visiting cemeteries.

Advancements in Robotic Surgery Pardon the bad grammar, but the latest and greatest at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale just got latester and greatester. A new da Vinci robotic surgery system in the hospital’s Operating Room No. 10 powered up Friday, Jan. 11, replacing a da Vinci Si model in service since January 2011. Robotic systems such as the da Vinci assist surgeons with precise, minimally-invasive procedures. SIH currently has 14 specially-trained physicians using robotic-assisted surgery to treat patients. Hundreds of da Vinci surgical procedures have been performed at MHC, including some not available at any other area hospital.

Did you know? Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time.

The new top-of-the-line, nearly $3 million robot offers SIH surgeons more options than ever before. This four-armed unit (compared to the previous three-armed da Vinci) allows for multi-quadrant surgeries – those procedures where instruments need to reach up and down as well as across the abdomen or chest. Additionally, the system has smaller, thinner arms with newly designed joints providing for a range of motion and dexterity even greater than even the nimblest human hand. It also offers high definition 3-D displays and dual-surgeon capacity for collaborative procedures.

This year’s Memorial Day will be on May 27, 2019.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of the system is less invasive surgery leading to shorter recovery times for patients.

SIH Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in the region with the da Vinci Xi – the same system found in major metropolitan medical centers and teaching hospitals.
