A SUNNY

CHRISTMAS

• Rise slowly from bed and chairs, using armrests for support

For 12 years, I have been a member of the SIH family, enjoying the opportunity to work with Second Act for three years. As your communications coordinator, I’ve been able to befriend many of you. You have enriched my life. With that said, my family is about to embark on a new adventure. We are relocating to the Destin area of Florida. This holiday season, my family plans to spend time in our hoodies on the beach – a lifelong dream for me. Julie and our children are moving at the end of October and I’ll follow soon after. Tracy, Milly and Stachia are wonderful people and I know they will find an amazing person to fill my shoes and take great care of each of you. If you are ever in the Destin area, look me up. Farewell dear friends.

HOLIDAY

NEWS ON

From 1:00 - 4:00 PM, Friday, November 2, cookies and punch will be served in the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale lobby to launch the Pink Geranium gift shop open house, which will take place from November 2 - 4. During this time, the auxiliary will also debut the quilt for the 2019 Quilt Raffle to benefit the Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, with a drawing held on February 14, 2019. From November 2 - 9, most items in the gift shop will be 20% off (excluding candy, soda, snacks, flowers, books and toiletries).

Due to the popularity of the September "Dealing with Neuropathy" class taught by Tiffany Ward, MD, here is some helpful information.

Also, the Beauty Within Boutique at the SIH Cancer Institute, will hold its holiday open house with sales of 20% off most items on Friday, November 9, with refreshments served from 9AM - 1PM.

Causes can include traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, exposure to toxins, genetic inheritance, and diabetes.

OPEN HOUSES

Stop by both shops to find beautiful, fun and unusual gift items as well as holiday decor. Remember, funds raised at SIH gift shops help support SIH hospitals.

NEUROPATHY

According to the Mayo Clinic, Peripheral Neuropathy is defined as a “result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causing weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. “ Those diagnosed typically experience a stabbing, burning or tingling sensation in their fingers and toes.

The best prevention is managing the medical conditions that put you at risk, including diabetes, alcoholism or rheumatoid arthritis. Make healthy lifestyle choices such as eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, exercising (with doctor’s permission) at least 30 minutes a minimum of three times a week. Avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, smoking, overconsuming alcohol and repetitious motions. If the cause is treatable, symptoms can improve. There are medications available to reduce the pain associated with peripheral neuropathy. If you notice unusual tingling, weakness or pain in your feet and/or hands, make an appointment with your physician. Your best chance for controlling the disease is to detect it early.
