SIH Cancer institute
Celebrates 3rd year Both access and quality of cancer care has improved dramatically in southern Illinois in the last several years. Because incidence rates in our region are often higher than state and national averages, this vital access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options are more important than ever. The SIH Cancer Institute – the only comprehensive cancer facility in southern Illinois – is at the forefront of intervention, but our work is just beginning. As we celebrate our third year, we would like to reflect on what has been accomplished and look forward to the future. The continuum of care provided by the Institute, spanning surgical, medical and radiation oncology, along with robust support and survivorship programs, is key to effectively reducing and preventing the impact of cancer on the people in the communities we serve. Our people and procedures provide comparable medical care a patient would receive at any facility, anywhere, but we also understand that treating cancer involves more than treating the disease – it’s about treating the person through Spiritual Care, outreach opportunities, support and survivorship, rehabilitation and more. As the need grows, we grow. We look forward to expanding our services and capacity to better accommodate our friends and family in 2018. Our work is clearly just beginning, but the foundation has already been laid.
colorectal cancer
prevention
Of the 1028 cancer cases diagnosed in 2016 at SIH, 16% were digestive, making them the third highest type of cancer diagnosed in our region. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), colorectal cancer, the most common digestive cancer, can be prevented or detected through screening. They state, “Colorectal cancer screening can find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. In this way, colorectal cancer is prevented. Screening can also find colorectal cancer early, when there is a greater chance that treatment will be most effective and lead to a cure.” "I'm sure screening prevented me from getting colon cancer," states Tim McSwain, Communications Coordinator for the Second Act. “I had issues when I was 30 and due to a family history of cancer, my gastroenterologist recommended a colonoscopy. He removed eight noncancerous colon polyps that day. I made changes to my diet and in the 13 years since, I’ve only had one other polyp." The American Cancer Society recommends that men and women of average risk (no symptoms and no family history of digestive cancer), should be screened starting at the age of 50. Screening options today include getting a colonoscopy, CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy), flexible sigmoidoscopy or a double-contrast barium enema. To find out more about your screening options, talk with your physician.
