New Communications Coordinator We want to introduce our new communication coordinator for the Second Act; her name is Kayla Lazorchak. Born and raised right here in the heartland, Kayla is from Johnston City. After studying Integrated Marketing at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri she is excited to be back in beautiful Southern Illinois. Some of her passions are traveling, riding horses and playing with her dogs. Kayla says, “I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me in my life, but I am so very grateful for this opportunity to work for Second Act. I`m ready to live, laugh and learn with all the members while giving back to my community.” FIND US ON FACEBOOK Join our private Facebook group.

SIH GETS A NEW LOOK! Like everything, Southern Illinois Healthcare, the parent company of Second Act, evolves. Our commitment to quality care delivered to you by skilled professionals doesn’t change. But as the organization grows, we understand that it may be challenging to recognize our reach into the community. In an effort to help you better identify the depth and breadth of our network, you are getting a first look at a new and refreshed identity for SIH. The soft edges of this new look are meant to represent our compassion and mission of health for fellow Southern Illinoisans. The three “stones” remind us of our strong foundation of values. The modern overall feel reflects the commitment we have to advanced comprehensive services. Second Act is a perfect representation of SIH’s commitment to community. Our hope for you is to be happy and healthy. We look forward to continuing to provide you with activities that boost your well-being and help you live life with gusto! As you start to see this new identity reveal the wide range of SIH services, we hope you look at SIH as a positive force in Southern Illinois. After all, what matters most to us…. is you.

YOUR HEART

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO BETTER YOUR HEART HEALTH? February is most often associated with Valentine`s Day, and thoughts of love fill the air. The heart is considered the center of our emotions and words to express our love are numerous. This month, let’s focus our “loving heart” on the importance of heart care - what a great time to stop and think about what we have within our chest, learning its value and how to keep it in good shape. Cardiovascular disease is an acquired disease which means that it is largely preventable. Genetics can play a role in every aspect of heart disease, but in the vast majority of cases, there are risk factors that respond to lifestyle modifications. The six fundamental risk factors

are high blood pressure, obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and physical inactivity. The first step in improving heart health is to be proactive by having a physical with a healthcare provider. Never smoking or quitting smoking is recommended to promote heart health. Managing health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes with a healthcare team can improve heart health and physical well-being. Making heart-healthy eating changes, including eating food low in trans-fat, sugar and sodium provides your body with the right fuel to be healthy. Stay active, and set a goal to move for at least 150 minutes per week. Source: CDC
