The Research Playground

We build creative and sustainable children’s playground SIK - Holz® is a privately owned, medium-sized company based in Fläming, south of Berlin, Germany. Here we have been producing children’s playground equipment from native Robinia wood since 1986. We employ more than 220 employees, primarily wood carvers, woodworkers and carpenters. All of the company’s services can be found under one roof, from construction to production to installation on site.

Shaping dreams out of Robinia wood

2

We exclusively use Robinia wood for the construction of our play equipment. It is the hardest European timber. The physical qualities of Robinia are considerably better than those of other timbers as regards strength, density and hardness. Robinia has always been a very sturdy type of wood for use in construction. The wood is sourced mainly from forests in the German state of Brandenburg. These are managed under natural mixed cultivation. We achieve one hundred per cent material use by re-using what is left of the wood.

Quality & design Our claims: environmental compatibility, innovation, safety and aesthetics The qualities of the wood, together with our individual and artistic play concepts, give the equipment a high degree of safety as well as a high fun factor. Quality and good design without equipment safety is unthinkable for us. For this reason, we observe the requirements of play equipment standard DIN EN 1176 right from the planning stage. We have firmly integrated the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system into the procedure of our organisational structures.

Protecting the seas concerns us all If the oceans are in good shape we all benefit ‒ let’s protect them! With our new products, we would like to bring children, and you as playground planners, closer to some living creatures from our seas and make you aware of the diversity which it is important to preserve. It is only a small selection which is intended to encourage you to draw attention to the matter of «protecting the seas». The children can take on the role of environmentalists, marine biologists or captains, and this way explore the oceans and get to know their inhabitants. In their imaginations they can travel to remote or environmentally endangered places in our globalized world. On these trips, animals that are threatened with extinction, become their playmates. This way, through play, children develop a sense of responsibility for these ecosystems and a strategy for rescuing them, which may make an impression on them for the rest of their lives. The children’s questions are also intended to give adults food for thought and perhaps encourage them to act. A responsible and efficient use of nature, and an equitable distribution of resources in a global world are tasks that we have to face today and which coming generations will have to solve.

«There have been oceans on our planet for millions of years, but man has only needed a few decades to spoil their equilibrium. Overfished seas, oil-contaminated beaches, dead coral reefs, islands of garbage and radioactively contaminated water – the signs of destruction have been visible everywhere for long enough. But the oceans are not lost yet». Quote from Greenpeace Germany You are probably asking yourself: «What has that got to do with a playground?». A playground is a public space which is used primarily by children, but also by the adults accompanying them. This public space should serve first and foremost for children’s games in the form of opportunities to move around, creative options for play and social contacts. It should also stimulate children’s imagination and encourage them to ask questions. Children are curious by nature. It is our duty to answer their questions and make them familiar with their future. In this respect, a playground also has a social task. In the same way as artistic objects in public spaces, a playground as a backdrop may also stimulate public discussion.

Learning and gathering while playing During play, the speed of children’s perfectly programmed everyday lives can be slowed down. There is time to marvel, to observe and to learn about one‘s own body. These processes are exciting and intensive learning all in one.

The play equipment presented on the following pages is intended to bring out children’s urge to research and discover. They are intended to draw attention in a playful manner to the importance of the oceans and awaken children’s enthusiasm for this important issue. The playground facilities and play sculptures illustrated encourage different types of movement such as climbing, seesawing, turning, balancing and sliding. They attract children to meet each other, to hide or to provide space for playing at building things and studying materials. The games available can be complemented with other play equipment. For example, there should always be a swing on an adventure playground. Our consultants will be pleased to advise you.
