Currently in production, “Joyful Noise” is being filmed at several area locations, including a home on Broad Street in Newnan and the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City. Starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, “Joyful Noise” tells the story of an unlikely partnership between two strong-minded women who are forced to work together to save a small town Gospel Choir after budget cuts threaten to shut them down. Director Todd Graff wrote the original screenplay. The producers are Joseph Farrell, Michael Nathanson, Catherine Paura, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson and executive producers include Timothy M. Bourne, Shakim Compere and

Queen Latifah. The film is from Alcon Entertainment, who also produced “The Blind Side,” and is being distributed by Warner Bros. with a tentative January 2012 release date. Nancy Price, Executive Director of Peachtree City Convention & Visitors Bureau, says that she’s thrilled about the Fred being a location for the film. “We think this exposure will bring a lot of attention to our venue and I feel it will help boost our ticket sales for the upcoming summer season.” She points out that the set for the hit show “Drop Dead Diva,” starring Brooke Elliott, Margaret Cho and Jackson Hurst, is in Peachtree City. The first two seasons were filmed here and the crew will be coming back to town.

“Sony, Lifetime, our Cast and Crew are happy to be back in Peachtree City for the third season of “Drop Dead Diva,” confirms Mitch Harbeson of Sony/ Lifetime. Atlanta Regional Airport, located in Peachtree City’s southern section, allows easy access to the area and the airport has drawn a lot of use from film crews. In fact, the road that connects the Private Hanger Area to Dividend Drive was recently named Diva Drive. Pam Mayer, Visitors Center Coordinator at Coweta County Convention & Visitors Bureau, reports that several recent films have been shot in Coweta County as well. “Zombieland” used Newnan’s 1904 Historic Courthouse as a filming site, and “Get Low” filmed at a home on Temple Avenue.

In 2010, more than 50 counties in the State of Georgia hosted a film, TV or commercial production. And everything has gone into overdrive since 16 counties—Coweta County among them—were named Camera Ready communities in October 2010. Fayette County will be receiving the Camera Ready Designation from the state on March 21, 2011. The Camera Ready designation is given to participating Georgia communities interested in attracting film and television production, explains Stefanie Paupeck, Communications Specialist at the Georgia Department of Economic Development. She says that the state’s entertainment industry exploded over the past year, thanks to the 2008 Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act.

READY FOR OUR CLOSE UP “The economic impact of production activity increased 440 percent between fiscal years 2007 and 2010, surging to $1.4 billion,” Stefanie reports. “Georgia’s business climate for the entertainment industry created tremendous opportunities for the state’s 25,000 workers in the business.” The venture is proving successful. Four Georgia-made TV pilots have gone on to become series: “The Walking Dead,” “Teen Wolf,” “Single Ladies” and “Auction Kings.” In addition to “Drop Dead Diva,” other top-ranked shows on their respective networks were shot in Georgia, including “Vampire Diaries.”

The good news continues. Stefanie points out that several film and television studio facilities announced in 2010 that they would open their doors in Georgia. EUE/Screen Gems bought the former Lakewood Fairgrounds site near Atlanta and undertook a multimillion-dollar renovation of the studio complex. Savannah’s Meddin Studios opened a digital production facility and is already planning an expansion. Panavision, a world-renowned name in the design, manufacture and rental of camera systems, announced it would be opening an Atlanta location in early 2011.

Coweta County was among the first 16 counties in Georgia to receive the Camera Ready designation. In her role at the Coweta County CVB, Pam was involved from the start. She says that paperwork was filled out and filed, location photographs were gathered and uploaded, and most importantly, an official county representative was named as the Camera Ready liaison.

Raleigh Studios, the largest provider of stage space in the world, put down roots in Senoia in Coweta County, and is rebuilding the historic district of Senoia as their live/work back lot for film projects.

There’s also the potential tourism draw to a community after the project is released, she adds. Even if the project is low budget, word of mouth about a county’s cooperation can lead to larger projects down the road. Senator Mitch Seabaugh, Georgia District 28, who worked to pass the 2008 Georgia 12

“Look at what has happened in Senoia, the rebuilding of a city in anticipation of film activity,” Senator Seabaugh continues. “This industry is good for Georgia and Georgia is good for this industry. Hopefully we will build a long-term relationship that will provide a stable industry for Georgia citizens and Georgia businesses.”

The positive effects go well beyond the local entertainment industry and ripple throughout the community. According to Stefanie, film and television production can bring a significant economic impact through local employment, purchases of local goods, hotel stays, location fees and other investment.

“The liaison handles all requests from production companies interested in shooting films or programs in the county,” Pam explains. “Having a designated liaison in the community is key for the movie production groups because they now have one place to get all the information they need about our community’s resources and shooting locations. That has kept her office busy, since scouts have been by almost weekly looking for places to film. “And tourists to the area are very interested in the filming that’s done locally,” Pam adds. “In fact, we’re in the process of making a brochure about the movies filmed here because visitors are always asking about them.”

For Pam, it’s all part of the job— a job she loves. By making it easier for production companies to use locations in Coweta and Fayette counties, she’s one of the key people who draw the entertainment business here and keep the benefits coming into the community.

Coweta County Fairgrounds & Conference Center hosts all types of events—from the annual Kiwanis Coweta County Fair and county business expos to community meetings and family reunions. The 80-acre center includes a conference center with catering kitchen, the Winfred C. Adamson Horse Arena, the James M. McGuffey Nature Center and the Walker Horne Open Air Theatre. The Drake School of Irish Dance is one of the strongest schools of Irish Dancing in the Southern Region of the US. Rowena Ryan-Schultz, a Champion Irish Dancer and international performer, heads the Peachtree City branch, a family community-centered school that promotes Irish heritage through dance. Many of her students are ranked in the

top 5% in the Southern Region and share Irish Dance through performances and competition. On Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan, the Centre for Performing & Visual Arts is a modern, 48,000 square foot structure that has an elegant lobby, diverse art gallery, lecture halls and star quality dressing rooms, all anchored by a 1000-seat state-of-the-art theater. In addition to Coweta County school and community events, it hosts world-class orchestras, artists and performers, as well as the area’s renowned Masterworks Chorale. The Georgia Renaissance Festival is a favorite annual treat for residents and visitors alike. A family event, the festival features jugglers, rides, musicians,

A weekend of fun every October, Great Georgia Air Show brings powerful jets and military aircraft that take to the skies and perform aerial acrobatics. Festivals throughout the year include Peachtree City’s Shakerag Festival and Dragon Boat Races, both at the end of the summer, and Fayetteville’s Old Courthouse Art Show & Taste of Fayette in May. The Recreation Departments of Fayette County, Coweta County and Peachtree City offer residents plenty of opportunities to stay active. Many have gone on to continue their education, even at such renowned institutions as Emory University, Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia. Babies-Can’t-Wait (BCW) - the Early Intervention System of Georgia - is benefiting from Counterpane School’s outreach literacy program, Souns. Since 2006, through the generosity of Counterpane’s Interact Club and the Rotary Club of Peachtree City, babies in Fayette and Coweta counties who are diagnosed with significant developmental delays are actively learning basic literacy skills. With Souns, the BCW children are showing their surprising potential to parents, teachers and pediatricians. Results indicate the BCW children using Souns are often on par or not far from their typically developing peers. Not only is Souns helpful for the child, but it empowers the parents to think towards the future and what is possible for their child as they advocate for their children’s education. Peachtree City’s Atlanta Regional Airport, formerly Falcon Field, was founded in 1968 by Joel Cowan, one of Peachtree City’s original developers. From that time until recently, Atlanta Regional Airport served mostly small prop driven airplanes and was the home to about 60 privately owned aircraft. For these private pilots and aviation enthusiasts, their hangars can be like a second home.

The Airport Authority continues to work with the Peachtree City Development Authority and the Fayette County Development Authority as they combine their efforts to attract new business to the area – especially those requiring easy access to a regional airport. The airport today is home to 190 aircraft ranging from private single engine props owned and operated by pilot/hobbyists, to large twin engine corporate jets and private charter props and jets. The runways current length is 5220’ with a 550’ extension being developed, and can accommodate aircraft up to 60,000 pounds. In order to improve its ability to handle the up-to-date aircraft, the airport recently installed Glide Slope and Localizer Approach, which provides Full Instrument Landing System (ILS).

Opening Their Eyes to the Glory

n October 2010, optometrist Dr. Scott Bowser of Peachtree City Eye Center went on a mission trip in Nicaragua. There he took part in the work of God’s Eyes, helping to hand deliver over 300

pairs of glasses and share the love of Jesus.

Over the last two years, Peachtree City Eye Center has partnered with God’s Eyes to help bring sight to the world. With every pair of eyeglasses and/or sunglasses purchased from their office, they donate one pair to someone in need through God’s Eyes, a ministry started by Bryan Kaiser. In 2005, Bryan listened to a compelling sermon from his pastor. The successful Peachtree City optician had 27 years of experience and owned three optical businesses. But that day, he was moved to begin reaching out to the world’s most impoverished people. By December 2006, Bryan had started God’s Eyes, a 501c3 non-profit corporation. The need was great; it’s estimated that more than 100,000,000 people in the world with impaired vision never own a pair of eyeglasses. God’s Eyes dispenses free prescription eyeglasses to the poor by working closely with medical missionary doctors with established clinics and partnering with Christian relief organizations such as Operation Mobilization and Fellowship for the Advancement of Medical Evangelists (FAME). Up until that time, medical missionaries would try to fill their patients’ optical needs through donations of used eyeglasses. God’s Eyes stepped in to provide the clinics with new eyeglass frames that patients could choose from, as well as lenses made to fit the patients’ prescriptions. Bryan Kaiser and Dr. Scott Bowser 74
