There are three

local ladies who have

caught the vision of what is being called “The Freedom Climb”. I n J a n u a r y, 2 0 1 2 , 4 5 w o m e n f r o m a r o u n d t h e w o r l d w i l l g a t h e r a t the base of Mt Kilimanjaro and trek to the summit in an effort to bring awareness to those being enslaved and exploited. Locals Nancy Byrne, Sue McCabe and Susan Woods will be a part of that group.

Why a Climb?

What

is the Freedom Climb? A ministry of Operation Mobilization, the Freedom Climb will bring awareness, prayers and finances for women and children to break the cycles of poverty, shame, slavery and despair.

Why Mt Kilimanjaro? It is the highest mountain in Africa and its summit is known as Uhuru Peak. Uhuru in Swahili is the word for freedom. Climbing Kilimanjaro is symbolic of the huge climb to freedom faced daily by millions of enslaved women and children worldwide.

Climbing Kilimanjaro on behalf of other women is already drawing attention to this cause. As the story continues to be told, many will hear the cry for freedom of women and children being oppressed.

What inspired our locals to The Climb? Sue McCabe said, “At first I was enticed by the adventure of the climb, but I wanted to join the mission in order to help with OM ministries that are working hard to rescue and prevent the enslavement of women in prostitution. God is calling people throughout the world at this time to speak for those that cannot speak for themselves, and I want to be a part of this calling”.

Nancy Byrne continues, “Just as Joseph in the book of Genesis faced insurmountable suffering and injustice, and where evil had sought to destroy him, God worked it for good to bring about redemption, a preservation of a life for His Glory! I believe God will do the same through us, that a profound work of His love, His voice, His justice, His grace and a preservation of life will be ushered in as we step out in an expectant faith on behalf of those who are suffering and in bondage!” Susan Woods decided in July to join the Climb said, “Immediately I felt excitement as I understood that this would be hiking, which I enjoyed, with a huge purpose! I believe that this is a spiritual journey for each of the women as we trust God for the

Each climber has accepted the challenge to raise $10,000. The funds raised from the Freedom Climb will be used for OM projects to help women and children break free of the bondage of the circumstances imposed on them.

This Marine Corps Reserve program has collected hundreds of thousands of toys for needy children nationally for decades and last year the local program collected more than 4,000 toys for Fayette and Coweta children in need. It starts at 6 p.m. in the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater (The Fred) with “Christmas at the Fred,” a musical celebration of the season. At 7:30 Santa leads a golf cart procession from the Amphitheater past brightly decorated homes on the east shore of Lake Peachtree to the City Hall Plaza, where the “Lighting of the Grand Christmas Tree” will take place at 8 p.m. Afterwards, Santa will be taking children’s wishes. As the weather warms, Peachtree City becomes a prime venue for all sorts of outdoor walks, runs, triathlons and biking events. The tree-buffered roadways and winding cart paths are the perfect backdrop to allow local athletes to compete in their own backyard and draws competitors nationally and internationally to enjoy the southern hospitality. The staff will normally announce the upcoming season early in the year and concerts will begin around April. Featuring top-name bands, comedy, plays and community events, the Fred is one of south metro Atlanta’s favorite entertainment features.
