Peachtree City Parks & Recreation Much More Than Play! For Youth & Adults

here are more than 416 acres of parkland in Peachtree City—and it’s all the responsibility of the Peachtree City Parks & Recreation Department. Families have a chance to gather and enjoy the outdoors among the ten picnic areas and four covered picnic shelters, while kids can climb, slide and swing in the City’s eight playground areas and 12 tot lots.

“The City has many wonderful facilities—the Kedron Fieldhouse & Aquatic Center, the Gathering Place and the Recreation Administration Building, as well as local parks with pavilions or gazebos—that can be rented for meetings, weddings, birthday parties and family reunions,” points out Sherry McHugh, Recreation Administrator for the Peachtree City Parks & Recreation Department. For baseball lovers, ten lighted baseball fields are available, including the handicapaccessible Field of Hope, as well as five unlighted baseball fields. Other sports are covered, too. Residents can kick the ball around on 13 soccer fields (six lighted and seven unlighted), volley on 12 tennis courts (6 lighted, 6 unlighted), dribble on seven outdoor full or half-court basketball courts, toss the pigskin on two lighted football fields, or

pitch on seven lighted softball fields. For folks interested in a good workout, there’s a physical fitness/ exercise station as well as a sixlane track. Everyone appreciates the pools to splash around in, one summer swimming pool and two year-round swimming pools, and two boat ramps to launch watercraft. Cyclists race at the BMX track, located near the skateboard area. Other fun facilities include the sand volleyball court, hockey rink and 9-hole Disc Golf course. The Peachtree City Parks & Recreation Department facilitates a wide variety of sports programs and camps for kids, hosts community events throughout the year and continually provides residents of all ages with opportunities to participate in activities and learn new skills. It takes a dedicated staff to keep all the programs running smoothly. “We now have 22 fulltime and six part-time employees,” McHugh says. “Additionally, we contract with instructors for instructional classes and hire summer camp counselors, as well as scorekeepers for adult basketball, flag football, adult volleyball and adult softball.”

The range of classes is impressive, with many classes available in Art, Music, Dance, Exercise and Adult Special Interest. A lot of practical and helpful knowledge is shared in the Adult Special Interest classes, like resume building, basic sewing and safe driving. Since the selection changes regularly, residents can always find new things to try out. “We currently offer Bench Aerobics, Ballroom Dancing, Clog Dancing (3 different levels), Kendo and Goju Karate at Glenloch,” says Ashley Alonso, Leisure Program Coordinator and Special Events Planner for the Peachtree City Parks and Recreation Department. “The classes we offer vary from month to month, though we do have some that are held each month,” adds Cajen Rhodes, Kedron Program Coordinator. When residents think of The Gathering Place, what usually comes to mind is dropping in to play some games, like Bridge, Bunco, dominoes or Scrabble, or attending a civic club meeting. But there’s a lot more to it, according to Janet Werner, Leisure Program Coordinator of Adult Services. There’s also classes, facility rental, community gatherings and volunteer opportunities, to name a few. “The Gathering Place is here for adults of all ages. Something for Everyone in Peachtree City Every October, Atlanta Regional Airport Peachtree City – Falcon Field hosts the Great Georgia Air Show. The weekend is full of family fun and exciting shows that feature aerial acrobatics, powerful jets and military aircraft. Other events on the Peachtree City calendar include the Shakerag Festival and the Dragon Boat Races at the end of summer. Athletes come out twice a year to the Peachtree City Triathlon to compete in a .3-mile swim, 12.6-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. In October, the Peachtree City Classic Road Race takes over some of the City’s roads and paths; it’s just one of the many races organized by the Peachtree City Running Club. Whatever activities you and your family enjoy, you’ll find them here. Some highlights are the year-round tennis and swimming, but there are plenty of other sports, such as bicycle racing and disc golf. The two lakes—Lake Kedron and Lake Peachtree—give residents the opportunity to picnic, play, fish and boat. Best of all, acres of protected green space enhance the beauty of the area. Peachtree City is well-known for its many golf courses and, of course, the 90 miles of cart paths—actually multi-purpose paths. Residents and visitors also walk, run, in-line skate and bicycle along the paths, which connect neighborhoods to shopping centers and the City’s phenomenal recreational and leisure facilities. The largest private golf club in the area, Canongate has three courses in Peachtree City: Braelinn (18 holes), Flat Creek (27 holes) and Planterra Ridge (18 holes), each with a driving range, pro shop, clubhouse, dining, pool and tennis. Members can play at 23 private clubs and 27 courses throughout the surrounding area.

The New Peachtree City Convention and Visitors Bureau Directed by Nancy Price

any people don’t realize the many services that the Peachtree City Convention and Visitors Bureau provides. Not only is it a one-stop location for brochures and community information, staff members also assist individuals who are planning group events, like weddings, reunions or sports tournaments. The Bureau supplies complimentary goody bags and free consulting services as well as negotiating the best hotel rates for them. “If you’re bringing a group to Peachtree City, we can make your job much easier!” says Nancy Price, Executive Director of Peachtree City Convention and Visitors Bureau. The primary mission of the Peachtree City Convention and Visitors Bureau is to promote the City’s many events and festivals. “It’s so great having a job promoting a city you love,” Price adds. “After living here for 30 years, it’s truly a pleasure coming to work every day, and a privilege being able to manage The Fred and the Peachtree City Convention and Visitors Bureau.” Recently, the Bureau moved into their new Visitors Center, where they share space with the box office of the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. Affectionately known as The Fred, the Amphitheater is an open-air

venue that brings huge talents to the area, like Cheap Trick, Boz Scaggs, The B-52s and Gloria Gaynor. Price points out that the Fred is a fantastic amphitheater, yet it’s only one of the City’s many assets that the Peachtree City Convention and Visitors Bureau highlights to draw in tourists. Topnotch recreational facilities and fun-filled events, like the Hometown Holiday in December, do a lot to bring tourists to the City. Hometown Holiday starts with a candy cane hunt for ages 2 to 10 at Shakerag Knoll. “Families are then invited to the Amphitheater for an evening filled with holiday music, featuring the Peachtree Wind Ensemble,” says Sara Davenport, Box Office Supervisor of Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. After that, Santa Claus leads a golf cart procession along a path adorned with festive lights all the way to City Hall on the shore of Lake Peachtree, where kids can visit with Santa and everyone will be treated to the lighting of the Grand Christmas Tree. Davenport explains that Hometown Holiday is only one of many events that Peachtree City has planned for the upcoming year. “It’s best to check our website often so you don’t miss any of the great things that are going on here,” she advises.

Senoia’s Spotlight Shines Bright Since it opened, the Southern

The Historic Senoia Project

Living Idea House has been drawing droves of visitors—nearly 30,000 of them—to Senoia. The charming City has been enjoying the attention, and local businesses are feeling the positive impact.

“The exposure in Southern Living has introduced the town of Senoia to the magazine’s 16 million readers, and that has definitely put us on the map,” says Scott Tigchelaar. He and Paul Lombardi, principals of Riverwood Studios (now Raleigh Studios—Atlanta) in Senoia, have been instrumental in directing Senoia’s development. “We’ve had over 20,000 people through the Idea House so far, and we expect a grand total of 25 to 26 thousand by the time the tour is over. It’s attracted visitors from afar, but it’s also introduced the Historic Senoia Project to people in neighboring towns and counties,” Tigchelaar says. The Historic Senoia Project intrigues visitors and residents alike. As a natural live/work back lot for the studio, with great restaurants and unique residential options being built, Senoia has become a wonderful amenity for Raleigh Studios—Atlanta that’s like nothing else in the production industry, according to Tigchelaar. “We’re constantly hearing folks say they ‘hadn’t been to Senoia in years’ and are so pleasantly surprised to come here now and see how much it has changed, and what a quaint little destination it’s become. They’ve discovered our great shopping, unique and fine dining, and they’re enjoying a nice day or evening trip to this Mayberry-esque place that truly is 25 miles and 100 years from Atlanta.” Suzanne Helfman, chairman of the Senoia Downtown Development Authority (DDA), reports that she has seen substantially more visitors in town since the Idea House opened. “Many of the shopkeepers have told me they’ve had much heavier traffic through their stores and greatly increased sales—some of them, the

highest sales ever since opening their businesses!” Helfman says. “They’re all thrilled with the numbers of people they’ve seen.” Todd Baggarly is co-owner of Founders Restaurant, a fine-dining establishment on Senoia’s Main Street and one of the businesses that has experienced an increase in patrons. “We’ve been very successful, and there’s no denying that the Southern Living Idea House has been a real boost for us,” he says. “We’ve seen incredible growth here over the last nine months, yet Senoia remains the most charming little town in the South.” Shop owner Ann Busey of Beyond the Door, a store that features beautiful furnishings, gifts and artworks, says that her business has gone up 100% to 150% from the same time last year. “What’s most exciting is that I’m seeing repeat business from Idea House visitors,” she adds. “They’ve gone through the Idea House and loved it— and now they’re coming back to town and bringing their friends. The Idea House created a lot of opportunity for us, and I think that all the businesses in town have seen a positive impact.” Business is going so well, in fact, that Beyond the Door is expanding. In January, the shop will move into a historical two-story building on Main Street. Busey explains that it will be a

major renovation project, but it’ll be worth it since the first floor has more square footage than her existing store. “The building was built in the 1920’s, then ‘updated’ in the early 70’s. We’ll be taking it back to its original charm by revealing the original brick, putting in new floors and uncovering the windows and high ceilings,” she says. “We’re going to let the sun shine in again!” There are other facelifts planned for Main Street. Helfman says that the DDA has purchased the old police department buildings; one will be renovated for use as retail space and the other will become the Welcome Center, which will move from its present location. Busey credits the Senoia DDA as a big reason for Senoia’s prosperity. “The DDA is extraordinarily positive and helpful to businesses,” she says. “We’ve got new businesses and restaurants coming in and prospering. Where else in Georgia do you see that in the present economy?” Another exciting development is the recent change at Riverwood Studios, which has become Raleigh Studios–Atlanta since joining forces with the largest studio owner/manager in the world. Raleigh has facilities in Hollywood, Louisiana, Michigan, Budapest and now Georgia.

Tigchelaar explains that the new relationship brings not only a marquis Hollywood name to Senoia, but also establishes relationships with companies like Hollywood Rentals (the largest grip and lighting company), Hollywood Trucks and ISS Props (the largest prop company) all with Georgia operations based at Raleigh Atlanta. Another plus is Raleigh’s full time marketing department, headquartered in Hollywood, is in front of production companies every day, introducing them to Georgia and our facilities,” he says. “With all of the productions’ eyes on Georgia, Raleigh’s marketing efforts should steer more and more of it to Coweta County, and that’s good for our local economy.” After the Southern Living Idea House closes to the public, the redevelopment of the Gin Property, an 11-acre infill mixed-use development of unique homes that was once the site of the McKnight Cotton Gin, and improvements to Senoia’s downtown will continue. “Since the downtown district is limited by size and surrounded by a beautiful residential historic district, we feel the exposure we’ve had and the charm and unique quality of Senoia will sustain,” Helfman states. “The quality of the changes made in Senoia over the past three years exemplify the future growth.”
