M A WORD FRO ACTIVITIES I used to organize activities on the personal level but never thought about taking it to the next level.

Summer is over (at least in some continents!), kids are back to school, bags are unpacked, now let's just relax and enjoy our activities! When I first joined SILC (a year ago exactly), I never thought that a year later I would be writing an article as the Activities Coordinator of SILC! But here I am, celebrating my one year anniversary in both Thailand and this life changing experience ladies club called SILC. To start with, I am Egyptian, I have been married for 8 years and moved with my husband to 5 different countries already...I have been an Expat since I was born, as I moved with my parents all over the Arabian Gulf (Kuwait, KSA, UAE, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar). I worked in a major TV group in Dubai (MBC) as an Acquisition Supervisor for 6 years. My friends always told me that I am the one who got them together in outings and gatherings and when I am not around they don’t meet...I never took it seriously until I joined SILC!

After 365 days in Bangkok (and in SILC) I came to realize that age is truly just a number...I have met people seeking their passion in their 60's, and others who never say “no” to new opportunities and are never "too old" to learn...eventually, I figured out that you set your own age not what is says on your ID and that happiness is simply a mindset...and it's never too late to start, learn, explore, seek or even master something new. I don't want to sound like a philosophical guru but everything does happen for a reason, even if you can't identify it right there and then, in due course you will be able to. So if you are reading this article (because you are a SILC member or you are about to be one) then we might be the reason you learn something new or meet a genuine friend or discover a unique skill...go ahead and grab this opportunity and set yourself free...this is a judgement-free zone where you get to do whatever makes you happy even if it's a cup of coffee with a new friend... I have a long list of things to go to and to do in Thailand (and in this part of the world!) So buckle up and get ready for a year full of excitement ahead of us!

ZA THE SILC BA

The 25th annual SILC Bazaar is back at Bangkok Patana School on the 8th November! This is the flagship fundraising event for SILC, raising much needed money that we then contribute to various community projects throughout Bangkok. In 2018 over 400 people attended the Bazaar and helped raise almost 250,000 thb. These funds were distributed to local organisations to support projects aimed at empowering disadvantaged youth, women and families in the areas of health, community development and education. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of shops, businesses and individuals every year bring you the best that Bangkok has to offer. This year you will find fabulous gifts, toys, jewellery, clothes, food, and so much more. It is also a great opportunity to find crafted gifts for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as all those other important calendar dates. Our planning for the 2019 Bazaar is well under way. With the continued dedication of our SILC volunteers, charity partners and our hand picked Vendors, it is sure to be a fantastic event. Happy shopping!

How you can help…. Spread the word. Tell people in your building, your kid’s school, your gym and all your friends about it. Join us and bring them on the day.

Empty out your closets and bookcases. This is the perfect opportunity for you to have a really good clear out! Your pre-loved stuff will be snapped up quickly. You will be able to drop all your items off at the school the week leading up to the Bazaar.

Put your baking skills to good use. There really is nothing better than home baked goods, and our cake table is the only one at the Bazaar, so business will be brisk. Please consider baking for us. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just yummy!

Volunteer your time. As you are coming to the bazaar anyway, please volunteer for an hour or two (or more) to help on the SILC tables. Please contact silcbazaar@gmail.com if you would like to be involved. Offer us your skills. Good at graphic design? Happy to talk to people on the phone? Clued up on social media? Then we need your help. No amount of time spent helping us organise the Bazaar is too small.

Pinterest your guilty secret? Every year we come up with ideas of crafts that we can sell. Come help us!

Ideas. Have you got an idea on how we can make the Bazaar even more of a success this year? If so, don’t keep it to yourself - tell us!

Just send us an email to silcbazaar@gmail.com

CALLING ALL CAKE BAKERS!

Lovely ladies! The SILC Bazaar team needs you to put on your aprons and bake something yummy for our popular cake stall. Make it or fake it, we don’t mind! Just let us know if you would be able to help us. Please let us know if you can help and what you will be bringing by emailing: silcbazaar@gmail.com

TIME TO CLEAR-OUT AND HELP!!!

Have you been thinking that you “have nothing to wear but no space for something new in your closet? Have you and family already read all the books in your shelves? Have your children outgrown all their toys? No use for the kitchenware, homeware etc. cluttering your home? This is your opportunity to have a good sort out and bring-in your pre-loved items that we can then sell at our extremely popular bric a brac area in the Bazaar.

OU B A & T U O SILC Self Defence Class

Our ‘Welcome Back’ and ‘hello Newcomers’ coffee morning was a superb morning full of information, touching moments, inspirational speeches, new and known faces, yummy food and laughs. Thank you to everyone that came!

The Craft circle has been experimenting with Macrame with different interesting and beautiful results

Intricate, colourful and beautiful mooncakes were created by some of our ladies at the Flower Mooncake Workshop. A big thank you to our Treasurer, Winly for leading us.

From the container, the types of flowers and fillers, up to the order you need to arrange the flowers for a beautiful Flower Arrangement our ladies were given fabulous guidance at Samaritan Creations

Some of our members joined a morning full of action, learning new moves and techniques of self defense. Active and healthy at the Muay Thai Try Out.

The kids at Prakkasamai and Mahawong had a blast with their minion craft activity this month and the ladies that joined enjoyed it just as much. We were present with big smiles and yummy treats at the Farmers Market in BPS (thanks for the table) and were able to raise some funds to support our community projects.

YOU Bangkok is fun and exciting, you’ve done the temples, you’ve done the markets, you’ve done the shopping malls, you are on first name basis with the massage lady, your coffee shop employee knows your coffee order. You’ve been to Ikea and got all the things you needed for your new place. What now? Maybe you’ve been here for 10 days or 10 years, but I’d like to invite you to think about YOU for a minute. Not you as someone’s spouse, or you as someone from a specific country, not you as a parent of children of certain age, or you as someone tall, short, old, young, married, single. Though you are all that, I’d like to invite you to think about YOU. What do you love? What is your passion? What did you dream of becoming when you were little? What are you good at? What makes you feel good about yourself? Who did your childhood friends see when you were little? What is your education? What were your parents especially proud of about you? In what aspect did you shine at work? What do your friends admire you for? What puts you in the zone? Now you are in Bangkok and you have a possibility to recover a bit of that. With some time in your hands, in an exotic country and new environment, maybe it’s time to go back to YOU. At SILC we offer you the possibility of going back to that old “you”, please come and put your passions and strengths to good use. We have a space for all. Do you love doing things with your hands? Join the craft group on Mondays. Are you good with computers? Are you “fluent” in social media? Please join the marketing team. Do you like organizing? Please sign up for organizing the SILC Bazaar. It’s our main fundraiser to fund the Community Projects. Are you a natural leader? So sign up to head that project! Or for the committee next April. Were you the financial guru at the office? Join the treasurer’s team! Do you enjoy spending time with children? Join us for the craft activities every month at the preschools.

Are you crafty and creative? Help design the crafts for the activities. Or join the SILC magazine team. Are you a good listener? Visit refugees at the IDC, sometimes they only want someone to listen. Do you like teaching? English Program is always in need of teachers. Remember, this is the only English education these kids will get, so it is extremely important to the kids. Are you an excellent shopper and negotiator? Then you can shop for the preschools, the kids Christmas gifts, the monthly food for Prakkasamai, and many other shopping opportunities. Are you naturally a leader? Plenty of teams at SILC that need someone ready to take on the project! Do you have a special knowledge in Astrology, Finance, Fitness, Geography, Languages Nutrition, Medicine, Education, Politics, (the list is endless), Cooking, History,Economics, Books, Marketing, Parenting, ….. Then let us know so we can organize a class for you to share your knowledge with thirsty for learning SILC ladies. Is your favourite thing traveling and getting to know new places? Then join the Activities team to help bring the SILC ladies to your favourite places around Bangkok. Do you need to stay home many hours for any reason and wouldn’t mind being busy? We have a lot of work that has to be done from home. Do you …? The possibilities are many Please share with us your skills, your passions, your strengths. We will cherish what you have to offer and will make it worth it for you. Volunteering is not just spending time in poor areas or with the less fortunate. Volunteering is putting yourself to the service of your community. SILC can be your community. Please get in touch and tell us what you would like to do, or if you don’t know, we can talk about it. You can volunteer your time for one hour a month or let it become a full time job. It is up to YOU. Article By Laura Troncoso SILC Community Co-ordinator

27 September - 5 October, "Shipwrecked!" BCT will be back on stage with an imaginative storyteller production of “Shipwrecked! An Entertainment - The Amazing Adventures of Louis d Rougemont (as told by himself)", a fun-filled entertainment for the whole family. The adventurous Louis de Rougemont invites you to hear his amazing story of bravery, survival and celebrity that left nineteenth-century England spellbound. Dare to be whisked away in a story of the high seas, populated by exotic islanders, flying wombats, giant sea turtles and a monstrous man-eating octopus. “Shipwrecked” examines how far we’re willing to blur the line between fact and fiction in order to leave our mark on the world.
