QUALITY LIVING FOR SENIORS THAT’S AFFORDABLE

SILVERA

Silvera for Seniors is a non-profit organization, providing affordable housing to more than 1,500 lower-income seniors in Calgary. Our purpose is to give seniors the respect they deserve and make it great to be a senior in Calgary.

“I’ve had a wonderful life since I came here.” Norma, Supportive Living Resident

SILVERA For more than 50 years, Silvera has been an advocate for those in the “silver era” of their lives. We believe strongly that seniors are a vital and important part of our communities, and we are working hard to reshape the way society values seniors.

BUILDING COMMUNITY Our communities span all four quadrants of the city, offering homes that are safe, accessible and affordable. No matter which Silvera community you live in, we want to create a vibrant environment where you can thrive and be happy. Silvera offers a wide range of programs and services that will support your independence and individuality. The Community Resource Coordinators (CRCs) provide information regarding community-based seniors’ support services. Our CRCs can provide information about Home Care, mental health supports, selfhelp programs, social security, pension/ government programs and benefits, aids to daily living, transportation, life style options, and life enrichment programs. Many of Silvera’s communities have an Activity Coordinator. These teams focus on providing activities that support your physical, social, intellectual and creative well-being.

Sandstone Pharmacies, locally owned and operated, has partnered with Silvera to provide residents a full package of benefits, including pharmacy services and qualified pharmacists.

Silvera’s Living Options In partnership with the provincial and municipal governments, Silvera for Seniors is able to provide subsidized housing for lower-income seniors in either our Independent Living or Supportive Living programs.

Independent Living

Bill, Independent Living Resident

“Here was a place where I could put the key in the door, I could open the door and I could call it home.”

Silvera manages suites throughout the city for seniors with low- tomoderate incomes who want to live independently but within a community atmosphere. While you are able to live safely on your own and can look after your daily needs, you don’t have to worry about maintaining the property. Silvera also operates an optional “Buddy System” in some locations. This program was established to alert neighbours of a potential health problem or emergency, by placing a card on your door knob before you go to bed. If the card is still there later on in the morning, your “buddy” will check to see if you are ok, or if you need assistance.

Silvera’s Specialized Programs under Supportive Living MOBILITY SUPPORT At our Shawnessy community in southwest Calgary, we offer 15 barrier-free suites suitable for wheelchairs, including rollin showers, wider doorways and suites, as well as an emergency call bell system. The program accommodates all regular supportive living services including housekeeping, meals, and activities, as well as 24-hour Health Care Aide assistance through Alberta Health Services. A key aspect of the program is that, despite having reduced mobility or other physical challenges, you are still recognized as an active member of the community, and can take part in a wide range of social and wellness activities.

Residents in the program are still able to take care of themselves with some assistance; however, your memorycare needs exceed the current service level provided in Silvera’s other Supportive Living communities. The program includes housekeeping and meals, as well as 24-hour Health Care Aide assistance through Alberta Health Services. Activities are tailored to support resident-memory needs and capabilities. Meal and activity reminders are provided in order to ensure resident safety and wellness and to encourage social interaction. Suites also include an emergency call bell system. Please note, a requirement of this program is that you are a Home Care client and you do not smoke.

Frequently Asked Questions 1. How do I apply for Independent Living or Supportive Living with Silvera for Seniors? You can apply with us in one of the following ways: I. Online at www.silvera.ca. II. Call Silvera at 403.276.5541 to have an application mailed to you. III. Pick up an application at one of our Silvera communities. IV. If you are interested in our Westview Community, please call them directly at 403.240.4920. There are three steps to the application process. I. Complete all sections of the application. II. Provide a copy of your latest “Notice of Assessment” (processed Income Tax) from Canada Revenue Agency. Call 1.800.959.8281 if you cannot locate yours to request a copy, or ask them for “Option C.” III. Submit both the completed application and the copy of your “Notice of Assessment” to Silvera. 2. How are rental rates calculated? With the exception of Willow Park on the Bow, Westview and Shouldice Manor 1 communities, our rental rates are calculated based on a percentage of gross income. 29

3. Can I apply for the Independent Living and Supportive Living Program? As the two programs offer different supports, we ask that you choose the one that would best meet your needs. 4. Can I choose more than one location? You can choose as many locations as you like within the program you are applying for. 5. Is there a waitlist for housing with Silvera? Yes. 6. How do I get on the waitlist? Once we receive your complete application, we review your eligibility. If you meet the criteria, your name will be added to the waitlist. *However, please note that where you fall on the waitlist is determined by your priority score, not your application date. Depending on the priority of each new application received, you may move up or down on the waitlist.* 7. How does the priority score work? The priority score is based on what is happening with your present situation and how that compares to others on the waitlist. This scoring system is set out by the Alberta Housing Act and is followed by all Management Bodies, (including Silvera) that offer Alberta Municipal Affairs subsidized housing. www.silvera.ca 30

8. Can I place my name on the waitlist even though I am not actively looking to move? No. The waitlist is for people who are currently looking to move. 9. How long will I be on the waitlist? This is not easily predicted as it depends on the following factors: • How many people are ahead of you on the waitlist at the community that you have chosen? • Does the community have a vacancy? • Does the available suite meet your needs and wants? We will keep your name on the waitlist for up to six months. After this time, we will review your file for updates and eligibility. 10. What happens once I am added to the waitlist? At the time of your acceptance to the waitlist, you will be notified of where you currently are on the waitlist. We ask that if there are any changes in your situation you let us know by calling Silvera at 403.276.5541. Remember, you may move up or down the waitlist based on the priority scores of other applications received. We will call you once your name has reached the top of the waitlist.

31

11. What happens when my name reaches the top of the waitlist? When your name reaches the top of the waitlist and there is a vacancy, our placement department will give you a call and ask: • Are you still looking for housing? • Have there been any changes in your situation? Once we have those answers, we will let you know: • Which community has a suite available and where the suite is located within the community; • When the suite is available; and • What the rent would be and any additional costs. A Community Manager will contact you within a week to arrange a meeting. 12. What should I expect when I go to the meeting with the Community Manager? A Community Manager will meet with you to ensure that the supports offered in the community will meet your needs. At the same time, you are also deciding if this will be a place where you feel at home. If you are unsure, you can think about it overnight and let us know your decision the next day. If both you and the Community Manager feel that the community is a good match for your needs, you would select a movein date. Our expectation is that a resident www.silvera.ca

32

will move in within no more than four weeks of accepting a suite. If the Community Manager has any concerns that the community will not be able to support your needs, those concerns will be discussed at the time of the meeting. In that discussion, you may be offered a trial residency period or be referred to another agency who may be better able to support your needs. If a trial residency period is offered, it will be for at least three months. During that time, you will meet regularly with the Community Manager to discuss how well the community is able to meet your needs. The last step of the meeting process is to complete the paperwork of your residency agreement with Silvera. This paperwork is completed with the Community Manager. Please bring the following information to that final meeting: • Emergency contact names and phone numbers; • Doctor’s name and phone number; • A cheque book or a direct- withdrawal form from your bank. Silvera for Seniors protects the private information of all applicants in keeping with Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Volunteer with Us At Silvera for Seniors, there are many ways to make a difference through volunteering. Anyone who enjoys hearing great stories and taking time out of their hectic lives to work at a relaxed pace will love spending time with our residents. Students can gain valuable job experience as well as learning compassion and patience that will serve them well with Canada’s ageing population. If you are a current resident of our supported or independent living communities, we’d love to add your experience and abilities to our volunteer team. We also encourage families of our residents to consider giving of their time and creating wonderful memories the entire family can share. Check our website for more information.
