No breakaway threat over standard engines THE row over standardised engines in Formula 1 will not result in a manufacturer-led breakaway championship, according to McLaren CEO Ron Dennis. The Englishman reiterated at the Brazilian Grand Prix that Formula 1 needed to remember its core values as it strives to cut costs in the immediate future. “I think it’s just clear that something that’s important to Formula 1 is the values of Formula 1, the spirit of Formula 1 but at the same time we have
a deep and very considered responsibility to Formula 1 and that means we have to really get costs in control at a time when the whole world is in a very difficult economic position.” Ferrari Team Principal Stefano Domenicali agreed with his counterpart and stated that the sport had to remain committed to the pursuit of technical excellence. In the days leading up the Brazilian Grand Prix, the Ferrari board had announced that it would be forced to re-consider
its continued participation in Formula 1 should the sport switch to standardised engines. “In my view, we need to take everything as a package,” he said. “We are speaking of a sport, of a business, of a sport related to technology, a sport related to the show and within all this framework we need to take the right action at this moment, considering what is going on around us in terms of the economic situation.” With the FIA seemingly
intent on pushing forward with plans to introduce standard engines to Formula 1 if FOTA does not manage to convince the governing body of a better way of reducing costs with regard to engines, there have been increasing threats from the engine manufacturers over their potential withdrawal from Formula 1. However, when asked by GPWeek if the manufacturers might consider setting up a breakaway championship which did extol the virtues of the Formula 1 in which
they wished to race, Dennis was adamant that no such thoughts had been raised and that FOTA was only committed to finding a solution with the FIA. “It’s a very controversial question which I doubt you seriously expect me to answer,” he retorted. “We’ve made it very clear that the teams have a very clear objective which is to act in a unified manner and a measured way for the benefit of Formula 1 and we will do that and we’re very, very
aware of everybody’s wishes, and we’re trying to address those wishes and work with everybody that’s involved in the process.” “So to ask such a controversial question and expect to receive anything other than the answer I’ve given is, I don’t think, realistic. There is no contentiousness in what we’re trying to achieve. “We’re trying to achieve meaningful cost-cutting and trying to do it in a way that still holds the values of Formula 1 and still presents
to all the teams the right level of challenge that Formula 1 should represent.” The concept of a breakaway championship is not new, however. The engine manufacturers were, at one point at the turn of the millennium, united under the umbrella of the GPMA in an attempt to force change from a commercial perspective in Formula 1. There existed at the time a very real threat of those manufacturers breaking away and forming a rival championship to Formula 1.
If the threat existed for commercial reasons, there is every reason to suppose that such a threat might exist for technical and sporting reasons as well. If the manufacturers lose their reason for racing in Formula 1 through the introduction of standardised engines, a final resort of a breakaway championship in which the manufacturers called the shots is a notion that has been mooted before, and could very well be mooted again.
