October Newsletter - Planning for 2011

In This Newsletter Dear Customer With the season drawing to a close on both track and rally, there are now a few who have secured their season’s championships. But, for some it would seem it is such a close season the winner will go to the very last lap of the last session to secure their title. It has been a very exciting year for motorsport, and shows that you can never make a judgement at the beginning of the year of how it is all going to go. I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter and good luck with your season.

Thoughts of the month Nicky Grist

Life in Jersey Helmet Update Co-Driver Seminar, as promised!

Stilo News WRC - Sébastien Wins BTCC - Jason Wins Driver & Motorsport News A Week on Jersey I have just returned from a week in the Channel Islands, competing in the Rally Jersey with my good friend Peter Lloyd in his Subaru S14, one of the last from the Prodrive factory. The weather through the week was quite unseasonal, being bright, dry and sunny and still quite warm. Perfect you would think, but this played right into the Escort Mk2 hands, as their tremendous weight to power ratio gave them as much grip as they wanted, and so Peter and I had quite a fight one our hands. There are 31 stages to the Rally Jersey, with the longest being only 6 miles long, and I found the constant stop/start with so many service parks was very draining. To add to this, we struggled with visibility on the night stages as the lamps were not the best, and were quite relived when 3 stages were cancelled while the officials cleared a nasty accident. Fortunately, both driver and co- driver were released from hospital next morning with only minor injuries, which was a relief.

New Prototype - for BTCC? Chris Meeke & IRC Colins Vision! Pirelli Star Drivers New Top Story Sports Physiology

The culmination of which was that we ended up 1st in category and 3rd overall, 58secs behind the leaders Simon Mauger and Brian Cammock who drove an extremely well over the whole rally. So, onto the next rally at Cilwendeg at the end of the month and I will be with my old friend from many years ago Steve Davis, driving in an Escort RS2000. If you are around please do come along and give us a cheer. The Rally is on the 30th October with a great start in the marketplace in Newcastle Emlyn, so see you there, I am also looking forward to the upcoming Rally GB on the 11th - 14th November

Just a quick note to all helmet wearer’s... With the FIA bringing out a 2010 homologated helmet standard for 2011, there have been many calling me worried about whether the 2005 SNELL would still be valid. So to reassure you, the 2010 Snell rating is coming in for next year, but it will be a good couple of seasons before, we lose the 2005 Snell, as the standard required for most competitions. This means you can buy a 2005 Snell, and it will be fine to wear for a good couple of years with no restrictions to your championship entry. If you would like to buy a new 2010 Snell helmets, the full Stilo range passed all the tests for the 2010 Snell rating, and so are one of the safest and best helmets to wear. AND…. In Next Months Newsletter My triumphs and trials in the Cilwendeg

(After many requests)

With the huge successes of the previous co- driver seminars I have put on in previous years, and with the amount of requests I had over this season, I have been persuaded to hold another Co- Driver Seminar. It is a full day’s workshop with lunch, and will be held in Abergavenny sometime at the end of November or the beginning of December. Date and venue to be confirmed later in the month. The day is aimed at co- drivers who have experience of rallying, and will include a review of pacenotes, how to do effective recce’s, as well as tips and methods I have picked up and used in my WRC days, all aimed at improving your co- driving skills and giving you an insight into advanced co- driving. There will also be chance to have your questions answered and to discuss your co- driving tactics with me, so I can review any areas you can improve on. I keep the numbers for the day low, so that you all get a chance to be fully involved in the whole workshop programme. The success of previous years and the feedback I get from those who have attended ensure that anyone attending will leave with a new perspective on co- driving and how to be a desirable asset to any driver on the rallying circuit. The cost for the day will be £120, including lunch. There are limited places, as there has been so many already expressing interest, so if anyone is interested please do contact me on news@nickygrist.com, and I will forward details of the Co- Driver Programme to you.

Stilo News Seb Loeb Wins For a man who I rarely see show emotion, Sébastien was obviously overcome by the number of people, who had known him all his life, sharing in the moment as he passed the finish line after the superspecial stage in Haguenau, which is adjacent to Oberhoffen, Sébastien’s home town. Being an all new event Sébastien did say that had made sure he studied the in- car videos, and had tried to minimise the media commitments so that he could concentrate on the Rally and this became apparent when he and Daniel came in fastest in the first four stages on day one. This lead was never really threatened from then on, and with the military camp stage being cancelled due to the 300,000 crowd numbers making the stage too dangerous, Sébastien and Daniel secured the title in the front of the crowds within the tarmac town superspecial. “The night before the rally I just went out to dinner with some old friends: I wanted to clear my head and talk about something other than the rally. We had a laugh, which did me a lot of good, but it was just a quick one as I had to be in bed by 10pm. Then on Friday night, once the rally was underway, I couldn’t sleep. I think I finally drifted off at 1am. It must have been the excitement…” commented Sébastien, when asked how he had prepared for this rally. Sébastien has also committed to at least another season with Citroen “I’m definitely going to continue at Citroën next year and then at the end of next year I’ll decide what I’m going to do. If I feel like I do right now, then I’ll carry on. If I don’t, then I’ll stop. But I don’t think anybody ever knows exactly how they will be feeling in a year’s time.”

Dani Sordo and Diego Vallejo did not have quite such good luck in the rally when in two unrelated events they ended up hitting a tree on the Saturday and then broke their suspension when their Citroen C4 went over a ditch. However, the second place finish secured the manufacturer’s title for Citroen and left Dani and Diego lying fifth in the championship, 8 points behind Petter Solberg. As Dani commented after the rally “Some you win and some you lose” Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia were also not to have such a great rally. Lying in third behind Sébastien Loeb and Dani Sordo after day one, Sébastien and Julien started the second morning in a strong position. The day consisted of a loop of four stages, taking competitors through the foothills of the Vogues and on towards the Pays d’Ormont stage, which was the longest of the rally at just over 34kms. Over the first two stages the pair managed to lesson the gap to Dani and Diego "The stages were all very different to each other today," said Julien Ingrassia. "The key was to find the right pace and then stick to it, despite the constant changes of grip. We were fighting with Dani when we went off 3kms from the end of the long stage. It was a really tricky place under the trees, where there was a lot of mud. The car suddenly oversteered. Sébastien wasn't able to brake for the next left so we ended up hitting a tree."

Although Sébastien was able to keep the car going, the breakage of a suspension strut later in the day forced them to retire. When asked about his team mates 7th title win Ogier commented "I’m very happy to be part of this success for Citroën. But now that Sébastien has won his home rally, it’s my turn. Next is the Catalunya Rally in Spain – and my goal is definitely to win that one.”.

Kimi Raikkonen Stilo wearer, Kimi Raikkonen was not so well placed as his teammate and found himself setting off on the stages midfield and having to manage the mud and gravel sprayed over the tarmac by the previous cars cutting the corners in some of the stages, making the surface very dirty and extremely slippery. The Finn came off the road first time doing only around 20mph, when the Citroen C4 slid in the mud and got stuck for a good 20 minutes before Kimi managed, with the support of a good number of spectators managed to get the car out. Kimi lost more than 35 minutes but remained in the rally. "In some places the roads were so muddy that we couldn't even see the asphalt," he said. "The first cars don't have the same conditions as us, but that's just how it is. Now we need to keep on going and try to make more progress." When the car came off the road again later in the afternoon Kimi made the decision to pull and retired. With the gossip mongers all waiting for the news that Kimi has signed with the Citroen WRC team for 2011, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out between Sébastien Ogier and Dani Sordo. With only two rounds left and the GB Rally being the final round on the 11th – 14th November, I think we will be in for some exciting rallying, as everyone pushes for the second place slot, leaving Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena free to go out and have some fun, without the pressure of the championship title hanging over them.

Jason Plato ST Quattro Formula helmet wearer, Jason Plato wins the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, after taking wins in two of the three races at Brands Hatch, leading from pole position. And, quite coincidentally, the win in the third race gave Jason his 60th race win of his BTCC career, exactly the same number of wins as Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena in the WRC. Jason now equals Andy Rouse’s all time record victories in the series, having come runner up three times over the last four years. The last time Jason won the BTCC was in 1996, in the Renault

“The BTCC is one of the very best championships in the world so to win it is a very magical feeling” Commented Jason after the weekend at Brands. A record of 42,000 people watched as Jason dominated the weekend, despite carrying the maximum weight ballast of 45kgs. The reverse grid of race three gave the pole position to Andrew Jordan, who went on to his second win of the series, in the Pirtek Racing Vauxhall Vectra,

BTCC - New Prototype on Show at Brands The Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC) prototype car was also out on track and demonstrated to the fans and TV audience by James Thompson, the BTCC’s official test and development driver, built by GPR Motorsport, who are based in Buckingham. It was extremely impressive to see that, despite this car only having run in a private test for the first time a few days previously, it still managed to lap only a second less than the fastest lap set by Jason Plato in his Chevrolet Cruze. Designed to halve the running costs the engine can be integrated into any make or model of car with teams able to decide whether to keep running their Super 2000 or change to the NGTC, as both cars have similar performances, but with the aim that the NGTC will become the dominant specification in 2013.

Looking at the way the car handled at Brands, I think that there will be quite a few teams who go with the NGTC option next season, as it is a great opportunity for a team to get a head start on a car that can only keep developing. Reports from the BTCC also suggest that there are quite a few new teams interested in taking the NGTC for next year, after watching the prototype in action at Brands – next season is looking like it could be a very exciting one for the BTCC. Sports Physiology I have noticed just how many of the F1 drivers are getting involved in Ironman competitions with Nico Rosberg announcing this week that he will be entering two ½ competitions next year. I was also interested to learn that in the recent Hawaiian Ironman a Brit, called Peter Slater, finished the event 20 minutes faster than his previous time, set 20 years ago. The new Mini WRC is base don the Countryman and will be run by the Banbury based Team, Prodrive, who are certainly not unknown on the WRC circuit. October.

Motorsport is well known to be a very physical sport, and those of you who compete understand the strain we put our bodies under in order to finish an event. In addition, our reaction times need to be in the hundredths of a second. There are now a number of studies being carried out across the world, looking at the required physical exercises we need to do to stay on top of our game, but, more surprising are the results coming through on the importance of the correct nutrition and mental exercises we need to do to stay on top of our game. There is now more to being at the top than just visiting the gym three times a week! A human being has a resting heart rate of around 60 beats/minute, rising to around 150 during a run on the treadmill. David Coulthard, currently racing in the DTM series, has a resting heart rate of 40 beats/minute, rising to 198 beats/minute during a two hour race, a figure approximately the same as that of a marathon runner crossing the finishing line. The difference is mental stress and to help this, a competitor needs to give his body a cardiovascular workout for up to four hours a day – jogging and cycling are good for this. It also helps if you can maintain a body fat ratio of 7%. As we all know, our necks get quite a battering while competing, particularly on the track events, and for this there needs to be resistance workouts for the neck, to build up the muscle and give your neck the best support. As with athletes and pro- cyclists, a competitor in motorsport needs to manage their diet, regulating the carbohydrate and proteins before an event. In the run up to the start a competitor should have pasta and bread, to give them a good burst of energy through the competition. Large amounts of water should also be drunk, as, for example an F1 driver can lose up to 3kgs of their body weight in the course of a race. But just as importantly, a motorsport competitor needs to take care of their minds as well. many competitors are now working alongside sports psychologists, ensuring they can exert unwavering mind control during a competition. Exercises for this include for those on the track, visualizing the circuit and mentally driving it over and over again, to familiarise themselves of the lines and apex’s. This is also why the simulator has become such an important part of many competitors training programme. For rally, it is important to spend time on the recce, familiarise yourself with all aspects of the route, the hidden hazards and weather conditions, so that when you compete it all feels more comfortable and familiar. Breathing techniques also help, so that you can stay calm at crucial moments, as well as techniques for shutting off the outside world and allowing the focus of your mind to be centered on either the track or the rally stage. Many I know, when surrounded by the teams technicians, fans and organisers use the click of the seatbelt as a trigger to shut out all the distractions and concentrate on the job in hand. I hope this has been of help. I am no expert, and began my career long before these studies had even started, but I do find that the advice above is sensible. Afterall, we all want the best possible chance of getting that podium finish.

I have had news from the MSA Scrutineers which I thought needed to be passed on to you all for your information.

Stage Rally Rear Wings The Scrutineer’s have pointed out that there are a number of cars in stage rallying that have fitted rear wing devices on their cars, particularly those with log book applications, that do not comply with the regulations. The regulation states the these rear wings can only be fitted if they comply with the FIA homologated or in compliance with national type approval and that this is only for genuine parts and not replicas or copies. It is up to the competitor to prove the origin of the part, and you would expect that the part would bear a manufacturer’s part number, and that an FIA homologate part would have the homologation stamp on it. As an example the Scrutineer’s recently had this car come in for log- booking and the checks revealed that the design did not match that on the homologation papers. Be careful with what you purchase, as it would be a terrible shame to spend large sums to improve your car only to find the part you have bought impedes your ability to compete. _____________________________________________________________

Steering Wheel Quick Release Hubs I have had information regarding the Sadev quick release hubs for steering wheels. Apparently, some of these hubs have been found to have a crack in them and need to be checked by anyone who has purchased one in the last year. These hubs can be fitted on many types of cars, including some single seater racing formulas. The cracks seem to appear around the flange where the steering wheel is fitted, and, although there has been a product recall on this particular model, I recommend that all quick release hubs are checked and you keep an eye on them to make sure the product is safe.

COMPETITION

The result for last month’s competition, The question I asked was - Juha Kankkunen entered into a rally after we won the Rallye de Portugal revival, what rally was it and who was his co- driver? And the answer was – Rally Finland with Juha Repo as Juha’s co-driver. And the winner is Dr Damon Green. Congratulations to you. The signed and framed photograph of Colin and myself competing in the Rally of China is on its way to you now, and I hope you enjoy it.

I have Joined with Piers Dowel and Autosport for my Winter Competition – Win a Personalised Stilo Helmet I have decided to hold a major competition for the run up to Autosport, in which one lucky winner can win one of the Stilo helmets, either open face or closed face, depending on which is preferred. To make this even more personal the winner will be able design their own paintwork for the helmet, which will then be airbrushed by the famous Piers Dowell, who I featured in last month’s newsletter. To enter this brilliant competition and have a chance of winning this great prize, I am looking for the person who sends in the best helmet design. To be eligible to enter and to make life easier, we have set up a helmet design template, and the instructions on what we are looking for in the design. To get these and register for the competition, please email news@nickygrist.com The competition will run until the Mid December, and after this date, we will not be accepting anymore entries. Judges for the best design include Piers Dowell, myself, BTCC 2010 champion Jason Plato and MSport boss, Malcolm Wilson. The winner will then be contacted to get the correct helmet size, before it is handed to Piers for airbrushing.

The winner will then be invited to Autosport where they will be presented with their winning helmet.

So, you see, a pretty unique prize, and one I hope you will all have a good go at. And what is more entry for this competition is FREE – so register now, you never know, you could be the winner. On emailing your entry we will send you out the helmet template, and the competition rules and look forward to seeing your designs.

Send your registrations set the subject as "Piers" to: - news@nickygrist.com

Good luck and I will keep you informed of how it goes!

Trophy Des Plus With its new and updated design the new shape Trophy Plus Des is at the forefront of helmet design and now homologated in the much tougher Snell SA2005 - safety standard.

The New Trophy Plus is fitted with the superior Stilo WRC electronics and padded ear cups and a flexible metal spiral boom for the microphone, this offering better stability of the microphone unlike our competitors helmets which move constantly. The electronics in this helmet are the same as in the top end of our range of the WRC and Piuma helmets and is similar to a Peltor helmet although superior in safety, communication and fit. The fitted WRC electronics give unmatched performance suitable for all types of rally cars, and can be connected to a Peltor intercom through the use of our conversion cable (AC0201) available as an extra.

Utilising the same shell as the other Trophy Des helmets it is one of the most futuristic helmet on the market and much stronger having passed the Snell safety standard being the FIA's minimum standard in the years to come (beginning January 2014). The helmet also has a more neutral coloured lining in black and is the only helmet on the market with EPS cheek pads offering better cheek protection than other helmets.

The new helmet weighs in at 1400g for the small shell and 1440g for the large shell in the Large and Extra Large size helmets. The Extra Large of the New Trophy Plus has a more generous fit unlike the original model, and is now available in Extra Small fitting heads measuring 54cms.

For you, as my loyal customer I am offering this helmet, without the HANS connection, to you at £389 which is £10 less than the online price!! To get hold of this great deal, please call +44(0)1981 241040 and Leighton and I will sort you out with the right fit for you. Please quote “The helmet for champions” to get your discount. If you want the HANS connections the price to you is £460.
