The Holy City's unique character and cobblestone streets draw over seven million visitors a year.

I adjust my stance on the somewhat precarious original cobblestone street to get a better look in the sunlight. She goes on to say that just beyond the city limits over either river, you will find even more remarkable beauty. “Something about the smell of the bluff mud and the pull of the tides draws you in and makes it very hard to leave.” Adding to the conversation, Mr. Kettles says, “For me, the size and geography of the city are large factors into what makes Charleston so special and feel more like a small town. Contrasted to sprawling Atlanta that has become more transient, Charleston has an underlying civility due to the multi-generational families that love it in many ways. The natural barrier of the surrounding water ensures that Charleston proper will continue to remain a southern gem.” If you have never been, then pack a weekender and go and get your feet wet! If you can stay longer than a weekend, you will undoubtedly uncover Charleston’s hidden gems. Even some of the highly toured attractions such as the ghost walks can be fun. ince 1895—nearly 125 years ago—a lot of things have changed. But in Asheville, North Carolina, at the former home of George and Edith Vanderbilt, some things have remained constant. Yes, the estate is perfectly maintained and has many original furnishings and priceless pieces of art, but along with the tangible, there is an overwhelming sense of hospitality and graciousness that remains. And at no time of the year is it more evident than during the holiday season. “George Vanderbilt first welcomed family and friends to his home at Christmas in 1895,” says Biltmore’s Public Relations Coordinator, Mallory Flynn.

says Flynn. “During the entire month of October, our floral displays team is busy decking the halls and rooms.” And she adds, as the house doesn’t close even when they’re busy decorating, guests are welcome to visit and watch as Christmas at Biltmore comes to life. Here are a few of the holiday-themed events taking place at Biltmore beginning November 1st and running through the beginning of January. Note that the Downton Abbey exhibit is an ongoing special celebration planned through the spring. Hosting guests in his 250-room French Renaissance-style chateau took a lot of planning, from where to hang the mistletoe, to choosing the perfect tree for the banquet hall, to perfecting the plum pudding. Nowadays, the care that goes into preparing the 175,000-square-foot mansion for the holiday season is just as meticulous but even more elaborate than anything even George or any Vanderbilt might possibly have imagined.

“All the Christmas decorations you will see this year began to take shape more than 12 months ago,” says Floral Displays Manager Lizzie Borchers of the magic she and the design team create when transforming the estate to the glory of Christmas days gone by. And with more than 55 trees to decorate—let alone the majority of the interior of America’s largest home, the grounds, shops, restaurants, and winery— it takes a dedicated staff of many. “Every department from engineering services to housekeeping pitches in so that Christmas at Biltmore is memorable for each and every guest,”

Rivers' style is unmistakable in The Chattooga Club's poolhouse and library.

I

t was Coco Chanel who said, “In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” When it comes to Kathleen Rivers, Cashiers’ go-to interior designer who hails from Charleston, there is no other just like her. Her style and grace radiate from her like the effervescence of a fine champagne. When she speaks, people listen because her ebullient charm and bright energy magnetically charge the conversation. The words smart, lovely and classic keenly describe her design aesthetic as well as her personality. Featured in too many publications to mention but including British House & Garden, Garden & Gun, Veranda, and Southern Accents, her work confidently stands apart from others in her field with a bespoke look and feel that’s all her own. Although she has designed prominent homes across the country from Vail to New York, the bulk of her outstanding portfolio is found in the local area. Many know of her and her former husband John as the founders and creators of the sophisticated Chattooga Club in Cashiers. Leaving a legendary mark with the creation of this stunning and intimate development, Rivers launched her signature brand of design vernacular, which she calls Rustic Mountain Chic. “At The Chattooga Club, we built a contemporary version of the older lodge feeling. Origins of the house, the colors and textures are based on the turn of the century-old feeling, but in a new way

with simplified details. We created living spaces that draw the outdoors in with spectacular views of the surrounding topography.” Educated in art history at Wellesley College in Boston, Rivers is a self-taught designer but had great teachers in her father, who collected precious Chinese porcelain, and her mother, who was revered for her refined taste and style. “At no point did I have an intention to become a designer. I had thought myself as more of an English major.” In 1973, she fell into designing homes in Panama City, Florida where her then husband was developing an affluent property known as Bay Point. “Lovely people were buying homes there, but there was no one to help with the furnishings. I was encouraged to give it a go.” Once others saw River’s personal style and original designs, her career took off. Ms. Rivers says the vision behind The Chattooga Club came from John Rivers’ idea to build croquet courts. “I thought he was crazy at the time…” She went ahead working out the design for outdoor spaces to accompany this idea and came up with a “fanciful outdoor space that was totally tied to nature… with furniture created from sticks and twigs, but felt glamorous.” Ms. Rivers playfully explains that she was inspired by the British 19th-century fairytale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, with the more refined sweetness of Goldilocks paired with the rustic nature of the three bears. tooga Club Pavilion, considered iconic to the club, was designed around Ms. Rivers’ dream using a tall winsome curved-back dining chair that she found at a local art show that became the signature piece in the outdoor setting. “We built and designed a space where people could dine outside. It seemed so simple, but no one had outdoor dining in Cashiers in 1990.” Still designing for The Chattooga Club as well as projects at Mountaintop and High Hampton, Ms. Rivers says, “I steer clear of what I call ‘trendy decorating’… I like classical style paired with similar colors and architecture. I balance all of these elements while incorporating Feng Shui (the art of creating a welcoming, functional space with good energy) into my design to enhance the overall experience and harmony of a room.” Mark Paullin, a premier architect in the area whose magnificent designs are represented at The Chattooga Club, Mountaintop, High Hampton and many more local country clubs, has collaborated with Ms. Rivers for over 30 years on design projects large and small, including her own signature home at The Chattooga Club. “Kathleen has a powerful nostalgia for the area” and has served as an inspiration for many of his designs. “My favorite designs are the ones where the client is involved and the home fits like a glove,” says Mr. Paullin, referring to Ms. River’s home. “Her house is fun, and so comfortable—just like Kathleen!” When appraising Charles Faudree’s designs of a dining room/library he created for the 2013 Cashiers Designer Showhouse, Ms. Rivers says in an interview with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine, “In the classical manner, Charles gave the room much

symmetry. However, as one who was confident of his style, he did what many great artists do in their paintings: throw in the unexpected. The giant arrangement of hydrangeas off-center on the table, the étagère with élan horns and a painting on one side and a simple chair on the other, all reflect his choice to ‘paint’ the room in three-dimensional fashion. Whatever it took to create the harmony he was seeking.” Her identifying brand reflects this similar style in finding layered harmony, yet with a touch of whimsy or fun. “People take their homes too seriously sometimes. A home is meant to be a happy place, a place to cook for your family, your friends. You can make it the most beautiful and spectacular place in the world but if it doesn’t have laughter filtering through it, then it is missing something.” After much to and fro and identifying her clients’ likes and dislikes, Ms. Rivers pulls the big picture into focus, allowing her designs to be tailored to her clients’ individual tastes. With Ms. Rivers’ recent success of reviving The Swag, the nostalgic mountaintop inn outside of Waynesville, her accolades and positive press keep growing, along with her client base. She does not advertise her design services; her clients strictly come to her by referral. And for this, not only is Ms. Rivers humble, she is grateful. “I owe my entire career success to the Cashiers area.” Her current work continues with the re-imagination of the High Hampton Inn where she spent many summers as a child. It is for these treasured childhood memories and all the years since doing good for this community, she empathically sets the record straight when asked where her favorite place in the world is to travel, “Plain and simply, there is no place else on earth I love better than Cashiers.”
