IN THE WORLD OF CHAMPAGNE, SOME NAMES ARE ICONIC. THEN THERE’S BILLECART-SALMON — A HOUSE THAT EMBODIES THE PERFECT BLEND OF HERITAGE AND INNOVATION. FAMILY-OWNED SINCE 1818, THIS TRAILBLAZING MAISON NESTLED IN THE CHARMING VILLAGE OF MAREUIL-SUR-AŸ FRANCE, HAS BEEN CRAFTING CHAMPAGNE THAT’S PURE MAGIC FOR OVER TWO CENTURIES. IMAGINE TIMELESS SOPHISTICATION, WHERE EACH GENERATION ADDS ITS REBELLIOUS TWIST, MUCH LIKE AN ANDY WARHOL REINTERPRETING REMBRANDT. THE HOUSE OF BILLECARTSALMON IS BOLD, REVERENT, YET UNAPOLOGETICALLY SOPHISTICATED.
It’s a champagne house that speaks for itself — softly, eloquently, and with unparalleled elegance.
Whether you’re already a devotee or just getting acquainted, you’re about to discover what makes this house stand out in the world of bubbles.
A HERITAGE BUILT ON FAMILY AND TERROIR
At the heart of Billecart-Salmon’s enduring legacy is its people — a family united not just by blood but by a shared passion for perfection. Since its founding in 1818 by Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, this house has thrived through the dedication of each generation, evolving without ever losing its essence. Today, the seventh generation, led by Mathieu Roland-Billecart, upholds this legacy with the same care and artistry. At the heart of their work lies the tasting committee — a gathering of family members spanning three generations alongside cellar masters. Together, they engage in a ritualistic process, tasting every vin clair and making meticulous decisions about blends, aging, and dosage.
Each voice brings something unique — Mathieu’s forward-thinking vision, Jean and François Roland-Billecart’s steadfast guardianship of

tradition, and Florent Nys and Denis Blée’s technical mastery — all balanced by the wisdom of François Domi, the legendary former cellar master. This collaboration is not just technical; it’s deeply philosophical, making sure each blend honors heritage while pushing boundaries.
These intimate moments of collective decisionmaking, steeped in history and instinct, make every bottle of Billecart-Salmon a testament to the family’s unwavering commitment to excellence in a modern world.
A UNIQUE TASTE EXPERIENCE
If you’ve ever wondered what separates good champagne from unforgettable champagne, the answer lies in the details — and no one obsesses over details quite like Billecart-Salmon, perfecting the little things into an art form.
TERROIR THAT TELLS A STORY
You can’t craft exceptional champagne without extraordinary terroir, and few understand this better than Billecart-Salmon. At the heart of their storied legacy lies Le Clos Saint-Hilaire , a 1-hectare masterpiece of biodynamic viticulture in their family domaine. Exclusively planted with Pinot Noir, this revered vineyard produces a champagne so rare and profound that each bottle becomes a singular expression of place and time.
This sacred plot is more than just a vineyard — it’s the soul of Billecart-Salmon. Here, the vines stretch deep into mineral-rich soils, drawing sustenance from a living ecosystem nurtured by ancestral techniques. The maison returns to traditional methods, using workhorses to aerate the earth and sheep to promote biodiversity, all while maintaining a deep commitment to preserving the purity of the craft. The result? Smaller, more concentrated grapes that distill the terroir’s essence into a champagne of extraordinary precision and intensity.
Named for the patron saint of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is then vinified in oak casks and released in strictly limited numbers — only 3,500 to 5,500 individually numbered bottles per vintage.
Each sip invites connoisseurs to taste the interplay of patience, tradition, and nature’s unpredictability. For Billecart-Salmon, true luxury isn’t defined by abundance, but by the choices made to honor the land and the heritage it represents.
This is terroir at its most profound — a living story etched into the vines and poured into every glass.
COLD FERMENTATION: THE SECRET INGREDIENT
Here’s the thing about champagne — it’s a delicate dance between preserving freshness and unlocking complexity. In the 1950s, BillecartSalmon redefined the playbook by introducing cold fermentation. Imagine allowing flavors to unfurl slowly, layer by layer, without rushing the process. That’s what cold fermentation does. By slowing things down, it preserves the vibrant fruit aromas while building a foundation of precision and finesse.
PHOTO BY COURTNEY SNYDER FOR NC LIVING
A forerunner in winemaking methods, this house, under the leadership of Jean RolandBillecart, began a revolution in the late 1950s. It turned tradition on its head with a cooler, slower fermentation process at just 13°C — cold settling — which gives wines a unique clarity and purity. This mastery of winemaking temperatures lies at the core of the freshness and finesse that characterizes Billecart-Salmon wines. Always striving to improve the quality of its champagnes, the house created a cuverie in 2001, composed mainly of small, thermo-regulated tanks. This allows for the strict traceability of the wine to the vines and their respective parcels. The vintage-byvintage and grape-by-grape varietal vinification process helps preserve the subtle nuances of each terroir’s expression.
Cold settling and long fermentation might sound like a nod to old-world winemaking, but it’s a bold step into the future — pushing the boundaries of flavor, texture, and terroir expression. This process allows the natural beauty of the fruit to shine, amplifying the ethereal aromas and preserving the purity of the terroir in every cuvée . Slow and deliberate, this approach yields an elegance and freshness that has become synonymous with the Billecart-Salmon name. As the wines evolve in the quiet of the cellars, the results are pure magic: complex, sophisticated, and effortlessly seductive champagne.
WHERE PATIENCE PAYS OFF
At Billecart-Salmon, time isn’t just a factor — it’s the foundation of their craft. Beneath their Domaine of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, centuries-old chalk cellars cradle each bottle, allowing time to sculpt
their signature style. Here, patience transforms good wine into exceptional champagne. While regulations call for just 15 months of aging for non-vintage champagnes, Billecart-Salmon insists on 3-4 years. Their vintage cuvées , the epitome of refinement, mature for over a decade, evolving into masterpieces of sophistication and grace. This dedication to time elevates every sip, offering a balance of freshness and depth that rewards the patient connoisseur.
In 1996, the maison reintroduced oak casks, with over 400 small barrels and 24 majestic foudres now enriching their winemaking process. The oak imparts layers of complexity, while meticulous lowtemperature fermentation locks in their signature freshness. Each parcel is vinified individually, ensuring every blend tells its own story of time, place, and precision.
Patience here is an art, and every bottle is a testament to the quiet magic of waiting. From the cellar’s silent tunnels to the glass in your hand, Billecart-Salmon’s champagnes prove that true luxury lies in letting time take its course.
CHAMPAGNE FOR EVERY OCCASION

Each bottle of Billecart-Salmon is crafted with intention, offering a unique expression that feels like it was made just for you.
LE ROSÉ: THE ICON EVERYONE LOVES
If Billecart-Salmon were a celebrity, Le Rosé would be its red-carpet moment. This champagne isn’t just a drink; it’s a vibe. Its pale pink hue is as elegant as a silk gown, and its flavor profile is a medley of strawberries, raspberries, and a whisper of citrus, making it the drink of choice for celebrations big and small.
What sets it apart? Balance. Le Rosé is fruity, but never cloying, and refreshing, but never thin. Whether you’re pairing it with sushi, dessert, or a spontaneous rooftop toast, it works perfectly.
LE RÉSERVE: THE UNDERRATED HERO
Think of Le Réserve as the backbone of BillecartSalmon’s lineup. It’s the wine that showcases the house’s craftsmanship in its purest form. With a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, this champagne is approachable, yet endlessly nuanced.
Expect notes of orchard fruits and fresh-baked bread, along with a clean, mineral-driven finish. It’s versatile enough to pair with anything from seafood to charcuterie or to enjoy on its own when the moment calls for something timeless.
LE BLANC DE BLANCS GRAND CRU: A LOVE LETTER TO CHARDONNAY
Chardonnay lovers, this one’s for you. Le Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a study in elegance. Made exclusively from Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes, it sings with citrus, white flowers, and a delicate minerality that feels like a sea breeze.
Pair it with oysters, ceviche, or creamy risotto, and you’ll understand why this champagne is a favorite among sommeliers. It’s purity in a glass, designed for those who appreciate life’s finer details.
LE SOUS BOIS: THE ADVENTURER’S CHOICE
If you’re craving something with a little more depth, meet Le Sous Bois. This unique cuvée is vinified entirely in oak barrels, imparting a richness and complexity that’s truly one of a kind.
Enjoy toasted almonds, brioche, and hints of dried fruit, all wrapped in a creamy texture that lingers on your palate. It’s a champagne that invites experimentation. Try it with truffle pasta, roast chicken, or a rich cheese platter, and prepare to be amazed.
ELISABETH SALMON (2012) & LOUIS SALMON (2012): THE ICONS
Toast the new year by celebrating love and history with two exceptional cuvées crafted only in the rarest of years. The Elisabeth Salmon 2012, a rosé masterpiece, honors the bold, passionate co-founder of Billecart-Salmon. This exquisite blend of Grand and Premier Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay bursts with notes of blood orange jelly, toasted almond, and brioche — perfect with roasted poultry or buttery lobster — pure indulgence in every sip, and as unforgettable as Elisabeth herself.
For chardonnay lovers, Louis Salmon 2012 is a blanc de blancs marvel. From the Côte des Blancs’ finest Grand Cru plots, it shines with white fruits, marzipan, and a whisper of white pepper. Pair it with lobster risotto or seared scallops, and let the celebration begin! Released after an exceptional year for champagne, these vintages are truly moments worth toasting!
LE CLOS SAINT-HILAIRE: THE CROWN JEWEL
Finally, there’s Le Clos Saint-Hilaire, the rarest of them all. This single-vineyard, single-variety masterpiece is made entirely from Pinot Noir, only in the finest years.
Le Clos Saint-Hilaire isn’t just champagne; it’s an experience. Its layers of sophistication, from dark fruits to earthy undertones, make it a wine to savor slowly. If you ever have the chance to try it, take it.
The true magic of Billecart-Salmon lies not just in the wine but in the feeling it evokes — the sense of connection, celebration, and pure, unbridled joy. At life’s most profound moments, BillecartSalmon’s champagnes are there, elevating the experience with a touch of the wild, the sacred, and the unexpected. For this house, luxury is not a destination, but a journey that continues with each new generation, each vintage, and each bottle shared.
AFTER CENTURIES OF ADORNING THE WALLS OF OPULENT ESTATES AND ALMOST EVERY 20TH-CENTURY HOME, WALLPAPER FINALLY CRASHED OUT OF FASHION IN THE 1980S, COLLAPSING UNDER THE WEIGHT OF BAD TASTE. ALTHOUGH THOSE GAUDY, ORNATE PASTEL FLORALS ARE BEST STILL RELEGATED TO THE PAST, WALLPAPER IS MAKING A DRAMATIC COMEBACK, REIMAGINED AS THE ULTIMATE CANVAS FOR SELF-EXPRESSION.
FROM LEADING INTERIOR DESIGNERS USING IT TO TRANSFORM PLATEAU ABODES TO ARTISANAL BRANDS ELEVATING IT TO AN ART FORM, WE ARE TALKING WALL-TO-WALL WOW.
PEELING BACK THE LAYERS
Wallpaper began in the 16th century as simple cupboard liners in merchants’ homes. Initially monochrome prints, these early designs were the humble counterparts to the elaborate tapestries of the aristocracy. By the 18th century, wallpaper had blossomed into a status symbol. Bold florals and chinoiserie, which the Chinese themselves had no use for, graced stately European homes.
Block-printed with laborious care, early wallpaper required teams of artisans. Polychrome patterns were created with multiple wooden blocks and endless patience. Meanwhile, Britain’s Excise Office saw wallpaper as a taxable gold mine, levying duties that only boosted its allure. Why? Scarcity bred a desire for this burgeoning décor trend.
Enter the 19th century’s Industrial Revolution. Suddenly, mass production made wallpaper democratic, with millions of rolls being printed at a fraction of the cost. Design reformers such as William Morris pushed back, championing artistry over kitsch.
From Art Deco motifs of the 1920s to the loud pop art shapes of the 1960s, 20th-century wallpaper styles embodied the distinct aesthetic of each decade. But fashion, as we know, is fickle. As the century closed, wallpaper was traded for blank walls and a “less is more” mentality.
WALLPAPER, REBORN
Today, wallpaper has reclaimed its rightful throne, thanks to a renewed obsession with patterns, texture, and character. Worth $2.26 billion in 2024, the global wallpaper market is cited to grow around 3.6% by 2029, so it’s clear that this centuries-old art form is firmly back in vogue.

THE RESURGENCE OF WALLPAPER
Why? Let’s be honest, a white wall has never started a conversation, but a room wrapped in a lush botanical print? That’s a headline! Contemporary wallpaper is a full sensory experience. Highend materials such as silk, grass cloth, and even embroidered fabrics don’t just catch the eye — they practically beg to be touched. Combine these materials with innovative technology, digital prints, and a growing nostalgia for the aesthetics of yesteryear, and you have the foundation for wallpaper’s 21st-century revival.
Imagine walls so sumptuous, they might outshine your furniture. Be it a mural-style woodland scene, giant painterly florals, or a heritage damask — wallpaper brings a story to your space. Forget minimalist monotony — exuberant wallpaper is about timeless, tactile beauty that invites attention while complementing your décor.
THE WALL WHISPERER
Knoxville-based interior designer Todd Richesin is responsible for transforming the Southeastern United States’ most lavish residences, be they mountainside, lakeside, or even floating — he does yachts, too. For Richesin, wallpaper is the ultimate way to add richness to interior spaces.
“WALLPAPER ADDS TEXTURE AND DEPTH THAT CANNOT BE ACHIEVED WITH PAINT ALONE,” HE EXPLAINS. “IT CAN PROVIDE A BEAUTIFUL BACKDROP FOR ART AND DRAPERIES, MAKING THOSE ITEMS STAND OUT. BUT THE MAIN THING IT DOES IS ADD DETAIL.”
But what detail is right for your space? From statement-making designs to subtle, understated patterns, how would Richesin advise homeowners to strike the perfect balance? “Bold pattern wallpapers are powerful, so the other elements in the room will need to become quieter,” he suggests. “Background-type papers will scream for attention less and are what my studio leans toward.”

RICHESIN’S TOP ADVICE? “DO YOUR RESEARCH AND LOOK AT ROOMS BOTH ONLINE AND IN MAGAZINES TO COME UP WITH INSPIRATIONAL PHOTOS. WORKING WITH A DESIGN PROFESSIONAL LIKE ME WILL HELP BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE IN TERMS OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT WALLPAPER FOR YOUR HOME.”
When it comes to Plateau homes, what wallpaper aesthetic harmonizes with the natural surroundings while still feeling unique? “Since I see so much ‘mountain’ décor in the area, I try to avoid these motifs. Antlers, bark, and ferns are not always the most original choices. Depending on the client’s style, I’d opt for wonderful casual textures or possibly pretty plaids and stripes. Grass cloth wallpaper is wonderful in the mountains. Earthy shades of rust, green tones, deep golds, neutral tones, and browns always feel at home in the mountains.”
Having worked on so many incredible homes, does Richesin have a cherished design? “Absolutely!” he enthuses. “We used a stunning hand-painted blue de Gournay wallpaper with birds and foliage in a primary bedroom that today remains a favorite of mine.”
BESPOKE BEAUTY
Ah, yes, de Gournay: the icon of the wallpaper universe and beloved by Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss. Founded in 1986, de Gournay revived the intricate craft of hand painting wallpaper. With every design (from classic chinoiserie to gilded Art Deco styles) painted by highly skilled artisans, de Gournay is quite literally haute couture for your home.
“We are the only company in the world that still hand paints wallpaper using techniques unchanged for over 300 years,” a de Gournay representative explains. “The style and artistry that results from these traditional techniques allow us to pay homage to the past stylistically while we create new and exciting designs.”
With wallpaper making such a comeback, what does the brand feel resonates so deeply with modern homeowners seeking personal expression in their spaces?
LINEN WALL PRINT WITH MATCHING DRAPERY FROM LEWIS AND WOOD. PHOTO BY BEN FINCH PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TODD RICHESIN TODDRICHESININTERIORS.COM
“WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO DEVELOP OUR COLLECTIONS AND CREATE NEW DESIGNS,” SAYS DE GOURNAY. “OUR INSPIRATION CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE — THE WORLD AROUND US, ART, BOOKS, HISTORY. THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF CREATING SOMETHING BESPOKE — THERE ARE LIMITLESS SOURCES TO BE INSPIRED BY.
Wallpaper allows for so much creativity. One can incorporate as many colors or as much texture into their home through it, and our designs allow for even more of this customization, creating a truly unique and personal touch.”
LET YOUR WALLS BLOOM THIS SPRING
Considering wrapping your walls in luxury? Spring is the perfect time to show them some love. From regal damasks and luxe marbles to abstract motifs and tactile textures, a world of wallpaper is waiting for you to immerse yourself in its charm.
De Gournay has sage advice: “Whatever your home’s style is, consider the mood you want to create. It could be a sense of escapism or simply tranquility.” You could consider creating a subtle accent wall or a complete mural. Remember, wallpaper isn’t just a backdrop — it’s the star of the show, so lean toward classic, timeless styles that will endure with you over the years.
Trends may come and go, but wallpaper? It’s forever fabulous.

MAGLIOCCA’S RISTORANTE
in scaly mountain
NNESTLED AT THE CROSSROADS OF NORTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA, MAGLIOCCA’S RISTORANTE BRINGS THE WARMTH OF AUTHENTIC ITALIAN CUISINE TO THE HEART OF SCALY MOUNTAIN. IN THIS INTIMATE 32-SEAT ESTABLISHMENT, CHEF DANNY MAGLIOCCA HAS CREATED MORE THAN JUST A RESTAURANT — HE’S CRAFTED A CULINARY HOMECOMING THAT CELEBRATES HIS ITALIAN HERITAGE AND THE CLOSEKNIT MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY THAT HELPED BRING HIS VISION TO LIFE.
For Chef Danny, the journey to opening his eponymous restaurant began in Youngstown, Ohio’s Little Italy, where he started cooking at age 12. While other children were playing outside, young Magliocca could often be found in the kitchen, cooking with his mother. “She’s probably my biggest inspiration and one of the best cooks I’ve ever known. I remember she would get up early in the morning and get her sauces going. When you love something, you can’t call it work. Her love for cooking inspired mine.” This early love drove Danny to apprentice under two masterful chefs, both graduates of the New York Culinary Institute, setting the foundation for his lifelong dedication to Italian cuisine.
After three decades of perfecting his craft at a highend Italian restaurant in the region, including time in Delray Beach, Florida, Magliocca was drawn to the serene beauty of Scaly Mountain. “I came down here and just fell in love with the area. I have a 16-year-old son, and it’s a great place to raise a kid. Everybody knows everybody. Everybody’s
really nice, just good southern hospitality.” When the restaurant space became available in March 2024, his neighbors at Sky Valley Country Club didn’t just suggest Danny buy it – they insisted. Two local couples, Allison and John Kelly and Roy and Sherry Gailey, provided support to transform the space into what it is today.
That transformation is evident the moment you step through the door. The restaurant’s thoughtful design transports diners to Italy, with artwork selected from Magliocca’s travels to Rome adorning the walls. White linens and elegant table settings create a refined atmosphere, while the open kitchen concept allows Chef Magliocca to maintain the personal connection with guests that defines the restaurant’s character.
“The vision was of a fine-dining restaurant, a real slice of Italy, where good food is plated well and served in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. That was our highest priority. We serve good food. Great food. Everything here is made from scratch,” Magliocca emphasizes, a point of pride
that becomes evident in every dish that leaves his kitchen. Working alongside chefs Jackson and Kat, he orchestrates a menu that balances traditional techniques with creative inspiration. Their handmade pasta, fresh-made stocks, and carefully crafted sauces form the backbone of a menu that showcases classic Italian cuisine alongside innovative nightly specials.
Signature dishes include a show-stopping stuffed grouper packed with spinach, artichokes, shrimp, and crab meat; a hearty, traditional veal scallopini; and a locally caught trout française in a beautiful lemon white wine sauce. The kitchen’s dedication to Italian authenticity shines through in their house-made ravioli and a rich spaghetti bolognese that has already earned a reputation among locals.
Despite being deep in the mountains, Magliocca’s Ristorante benefits from its proximity to Atlanta’s international airport, providing access to some of the finest seafood available. “I get better seafood here in the mountains than I did in Delray Beach, Florida,” Magliocca notes, explaining how the restaurant sources from premier international suppliers. This commitment to quality extends to their produce, all of which is sourced locally.
Beyond the dining room, Magliocca’s Ristorante offers full-service catering that transports Chef Danny’s “authentic Italian kitchen to yours.” From handmade cannelloni and lasagna to fresh mozzarella and their famous polpette (Italian meatballs), the catering service recreates the restaurant experience in clients’ homes. Whether it’s an intimate dinner party or a charity event, Magliocca’s team brings the same attention to detail and authentic flavors to every occasion.
Since purchasing the restaurant in March 2024 and opening in July, Magliocca’s has established itself as a culinary destination and a neighborhood gathering place where nearly every guest is greeted by name. In an area where the next restaurant is ten miles in either direction — up the mountain to Highlands or down to Clayton — Magliocca’s stands out not just for its focus on quality ingredients and traditional preparation methods but also for creating a place where authentic Italian hospitality means treating every guest like family. The open kitchen isn’t just a design choice — it’s a statement about transparency and connection, allowing guests to see firsthand the care that goes into every dish, and just as importantly, to pop in for a hug hello. It’s the kind of place where handshakes have been replaced by warm embraces — a true Italian welcome in the heart of the mountains.

TORTELLINI
with pancetta cream sauce
This dish exemplifies Chef Danny’s approach to Italian cooking — straightforward, scratch-made, and focused on quality ingredients. The handmade pasta combined with a rich cream sauce, crispy pancetta, fresh mushrooms, and sweet peas showcases how a few well-chosen ingredients, treated with care, can create something truly special. While Chef Danny makes fresh tortellini in his restaurant daily, this version uses quality store-bought pasta that will still deliver the authentic flavors of his kitchen to your home.
INGREDIENTS
• 4 ounces pancetta, diced
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 4 ounces sliced cremini mushrooms
• 3 thinly sliced garlic cloves
• Pinch of crushed red pepper
• ¼ cup white wine
• 1 ½ cups heavy cream
• 1 cup frozen peas
• 16 ounces tortellini, cooked according to the package
• ½ cup Pecorino cheese, plus more for serving
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• Fresh basil
WINE PAIRING
Choose a medium-bodied white wine, such as Chardonnay or Viognier, whose richness and subtle fruity notes balance the cream sauce and pancetta’s saltiness.
1. Heat a large sauté pan on medium-high heat. Add the pancetta and cook until browned and crispy, about 5 minutes.
2. Add the olive oil and butter, then the mushrooms, to the pan. Let the mushrooms cook undisturbed for a few minutes. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper and cook for 1 minute, until garlic is fragrant but not browned.
3. Add the white wine and use a spoon to scrape up the brown bits in the pan. Simmer the wine for 2 minutes.
4. Add heavy cream and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
5. Add the peas, tortellini, pecorino cheese, and salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with fresh basil and additional cheese.

The Art of Resilience
IN ITS 40TH YEAR, THE BASCOM IS TURNING COMMUNITY CHALLENGES INTO COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES
word S by brad bartlett
photography by courtney S nyder
AS THIS BELOVED HIGHLANDS ARTS CENTER CELEBRATES 40 YEARS, A STORY OF UNEXPECTED STORMS AND WARM RESPONSES SHOWS WHY IT REMAINS AT THE HEART OF MOUNTAIN CULTURE .
When Hurricane Helene swept through Western North Carolina last fall, the team at The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts faced an unexpected challenge.
Their annual clay symposium — a cornerstone event that draws ceramic artists and enthusiasts from across the Southeast — was scheduled for that very weekend. But what could have simply been a canceled event instead revealed the true character of this Highlands arts center.
In Helene’s wake, The Bascom’s response wasn’t just to reschedule the symposium (now set for this April) but to transform their creative spaces into a hub of community support.
Local fiber artists took up the call to help. They gathered at the center’s campus to craft what became known as “warmth bundles” and compassionately assembled packages of hand-knitted hats, scarves, and mittens for those who had lost winter clothing to the storm.
This moment of crisis — and the incredible response — is a perfect example of how The Bascom has evolved over four decades from a traditional art gallery into something far more vital: a living, breathing part of the mountain community’s fabric.
Now, as The Bascom celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025, it’s not just surviving but thriving, with record attendance, expanded programs, and an ambitious vision for the future.
FROM STORM RECOVERY TO COMMUNITY RENAISSANCE
In the end, more than 200 pieces were created and distributed through the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s emergency distribution warehouse.
“The outpouring was amazing,” recalls The Bascom’s Interim Executive Director Billy Love. “We had knitters showing up with materials and templates. When these people get busy, they really get busy.”
The creative response to Hurricane Helene wasn’t a unique moment. Beyond the warmth bundles initiative, The Bascom also opened its doors to Asheville-based ceramic artist Melissa Weiss — an artist who had lost her studio to Helene.
By providing housing and workspace through their artist residency program, they transformed a personal setback into an opportunity for community enrichment. Weiss has since taught a workshop, sharing her expertise with local artists and students.
“WE’VE BEEN FORTUNATE TO HAVE GOOD SUPPORT THAT ALLOWS US THIS KIND OF ADAPTABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY,” SAYS BILLY LOVE. “WE’VE CONSISTENTLY HIT OUR GOALS, AND WE’VE GOT ONE OF THE STRONGEST TEAMS I’VE WORKED WITH HERE. COMBINED WITH SOLID BOARD LEADERSHIP, WE’RE MAINTAINING MOMENTUM WHILE IN GROWTH MODE. THIS HAS BEEN KEY TO HELPING US MAINTAIN OUR COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBILITY.
WE’RE A FREE ADMISSION ORGANIZATION, WITH MOST COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS BEING FREE OR HAVING MINIMAL COSTS.”
OWEN P. BALOGA, WOOD FIRED JAR
Housed on six acres of a former horse farm, The Bascom’s campus tells a story of preservation and renewal. The past year saw the completion of a significant renovation of the Will Henry Stevens Bridge — a historic covered bridge originally constructed in Warner, New Hampshire, in 1809.
Now serving as the center’s iconic entrance, the bridge symbolizes The Bascom’s commitment to honoring heritage while building for the future.
That future is looking particularly bright. The center recorded strong attendance in 2024, reaching between 3,500 and 4,000 participants through its community outreach programs alone.
The ceramics department has expanded with the addition of art educator Ester Lipscomb, who joins longtime director Frank Vickery in leading what has become one of the center’s most dynamic programs.

A YEAR OF DOUBLE VISION
In a fitting tribute to its resilient spirit, The Bascom will host not one but two clay symposiums in 2025.
The first, rescheduled from Hurricane Helene’s interruption, will bring “Symbolism in Expressive Narrative” to life this April. Three distinguished ceramic artists — Christine Kosiba, Andréa Keys Connell, and Taylor Robenalt — will demonstrate their mastery of animal and figurative sculpture.
The fall symposium, “Forms of Inspiration,” will showcase innovative approaches to clay and mixed media through the work of Kirsten Stingle, Natasha Dikareva, and Thaddeus Erdahl.
“The noise in the news cycle may have shifted, but folks in Western North Carolina are still very much feeling the aftermath of that experience,” reflects Love. “Being able to bring back this event and reclaim this space for creativity and connection means something special to our community.”
The symposiums bookend a landmark year for The Bascom as the center celebrates its 40th anniversary. A special exhibition, “Inspiring & Empowering: A Journey Through The Bascom’s Exhibition Legacy,” will trace the organization’s evolution from its early days to its current status as a comprehensive visual arts center.
This retrospective will share space with forwardlooking initiatives, including an ambitious master planning process that envisions expanded studio spaces and enhanced facilities for visiting artists.
The center’s workshop series displays this blend of accessibility and excellence. With approximately 45 workshops planned for 2025, The Bascom will offer multiday immersive experiences in everything from ceramics and painting to photography and woodturning.
Led by professional artists, these intensive sessions are among the center’s most popular programs, drawing both local community members and visiting artists to the mountain campus.

A
“THIRD
PLACE” FOR NORTH CAROLINA
“You don’t need a bathroom code at The Bascom,” jokes Love, referencing the recent trend of spaces becoming less welcoming to casual visitors.
A lighthearted comment underscores a serious mission: creating what sociologists call a “third space” — a place between home and work where community naturally gathers and connections form.
On any given day, visitors might wander the Horst Winkler Nature and Sculpture Trail, where outdoor installations blend with native flora and a pristine mountain brook.
Others gather in the Greehey Atrium Gallery or explore the center’s robust retail space, showcasing over 150 artists. Children explore the story walk, while serious artists work in the dedicated ceramics building, a facility that speaks to the region’s strong clay tradition.
“Grabbing green spaces of this size on a mountaintop is pretty rare,” Love notes. “We’re treated like a public park, and we prefer it that way.”
This accessibility extends beyond the physical space. The Bascom maintains about 25 community partnerships, enabling outreach programs that impact thousands of lives annually. From senior centers to the local Boys and Girls Club, these connections ensure art reaches every corner of the community.
The center’s commitment to accessibility is evident in practical ways, too. A solid scholarship program keeps fee-based workshops within reach for all interested participants. Combined with its free admission policy and numerous complimentary programs, it creates an environment where art truly belongs to everyone.
LOOKING FORWARD: THE NEXT 40 YEARS
“WE’RE IN GROWTH MODE,” LOVE SAYS ENTHUSIASTICALLY. “FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, WE’VE BEEN GOING THROUGH A PRESCRIBED MASTER PLANNING PROCESS TO LOOK AT EVEN MORE DIVERSIFIED REVENUE STREAMS AND WAYS TO UTILIZE THE CAMPUS MORE EFFECTIVELY.”
LEFT TO RIGHT: JOHN CUMMINGS, LARGE VASE WITH YELLOW DRIPS ; KOICHI YAMAMOTO, KANMURI , GINO CASTELLANOS, AMBROSIA
WILL HENRY STEVENS BRIDGE, THE BASCOM’S ICONIC ENTRANCE.
The momentum is already visible. A new kiln has joined the center’s extensive ceramic facilities. The education calendar has swelled to include nearly 45 workshops annually, and the 2025 exhibition schedule reflects both ambition and inclusivity. Highlights include a survey of Southeastern studio programs in “Emergence” and the historical retrospective “Chatov,” which spans three generations of artistic legacy.
But most telling is the unwavering commitment of The Bascom’s team. Every staff member and volunteer brings an exceptional level of dedication to advancing the center’s mission. This shared passion for the arts and deep community investment ensures that The Bascom’s next 40 years will be even more transformative than its first.
“I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO AN EVEN STRONGER YEAR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT,” LOVE REFLECTS. “WE HAD SUCH AMAZING ATTENDANCE LAST YEAR, AND I REALLY FELT LIKE WE WERE HITTING OUR STRIDE ON ACTIVATING THE CAMPUS. WE’VE GOT SO MUCH MORE TO CELEBRATE, AND WE CAN ALL COME TOGETHER IN THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE.”
As the winter sun slants across the historic covered bridge and morning frost melts into another bustling day at The Bascom, it’s clear that this is more than just an arts center. It’s a testament to what happens when creativity meets community, when tradition meets innovation, and when a shared vision of accessible art becomes reality.

DESPITE THEIR SIZE, BONSAI TREES BESTOW THE LARGE LESSONS OF NATURE UPON HEARTS AND HOMES
MEDITATIONS in miniature
word S by li S a klein
ITS TRUNK IS WITHERED WITH A STORIED AIR, BRANCHES FORMING GRACEFUL KNOTS, LEAVES WHISPERING AGE-OLD WISDOM — BUT THIS MAGICAL TREE IS NOT TOWERING IN AN ANCIENT FOREST AS IT SEEMS. IN FACT, IT IS GROWING IN A VERY SMALL POT, SPRUNG FROM AN ART FORM THAT IS, INDEED, ANCIENT: BONSAI.
Translating to “planted in a container,” bonsai are miniature representations — and celebrations — of what is found in nature. Taking tree form, these diminutive plants are not dwarf species, but kept that way, usually under four feet, purposefully. And while they appear as wild, full-grown trees, there are artists in the wings who have carefully twisted, turned, pinched and pruned them with patience into a living sculpture that symbolizes the natural world.
“A bonsai is described as the epitome of nature,” says Masayuki Fujikawa, an award-winning Japanese bonsai artist. “The basic idea of bonsai is to express natural phenomena in the shape and form of a tree. Even in a small pot, the expression of the trunk and the branches makes us imagine the story of the place and the environment. The powerful and graceful appearance of a bonsai is moving and astonishing.”
Although most closely associated with Japanese culture, bonsai’s roots actually begin in China around 700 C.E., when shrunken landscapes were
being created as art displayed by the elite. The plants used are thought to have been collected in the wild, their twisted, sculptural forms the result of the harsh conditions in which they grew — and shaped further, possibly to emulate serpents and dragons from Chinese folklore. The practice may have also grown from the belief that the powers of water, fire, wood, metal and earth could be harnessed by recreating something representing one of those five elements — a mountain or tree, perhaps — in miniature.
Called pun-tsai (tray planting) and currently penjing (potted scene), the practice spread throughout Asia to Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and, of course, Japan, where it arrived more than 1,000 years ago with other Chinese influences. There, the art form blossomed into what is now called bonsai — usually just a single tree representing balance, nature or even the entire universe, inspired by ancient Japanese Shinto beliefs and Zen Buddhism (which also made its way from China).
“Bonsai is a part of traditional Japanese culture,” Mr. Fujikawa, whose father owned a bonsai garden, says. “Japanese people have a custom of believing that gods dwell in nature and materials in Japan. [We] believe that the respect we have for nature creates a special value in bonsai.”
While it was contained in its Asian pot for centuries, bonsai made its way to the West in the late 1800s via traveling expositions and world’s fairs and was slowly adopted and transformed by each culture it touched.
“Bonsai, like any art form, evolves and changes, particularly when it moves to a different country or different culture,” says Eric Schwartz, who lives in Massachusetts and is assistant editor of the Journal of the American Bonsai Society (ABS), a North American group that formed in 1967. “[In North America], our own flavors of bonsai are slowly developing.”
No matter how a culture shapes its own, bonsai is now inspiring artists all around the world — and bringing them together. The World Bonsai Friendship Federation (WBFF), formed in the 1970s by a group of Japanese artists, has members from every continent and is “an enthusiastic collection of people [who]
share a passion for bonsai,” says Sae Won Kim, a horticulture expert based in Korea and the current chairman of WBFF, whose father also operated a bonsai business that he took over. The organization hosts an international conference every four years, plus promotes the art and “global peace via bonsai.”
With bonsai’s world cultivation has come not only new techniques and creations, but the use of a wide variety of plants that are suited to their regions — and serve as muse to their artists. Any plant can be used as a starting point, but generally needs a woody stem, branches and small leaves.
In Japan, evergreens, such as the Goyomatsu Pine and juniper, are popular, while in North America, a redwood or spruce may be chosen. From Korean hornbeams to tropical rubber trees to flowering azaleas, nearly anything can be bonsai-ed.
And, in the 21st century, getting started is easier than ever, with organizations both local, such as the ABS and Tokyo-based Nippon Bonsai Association, and global, such as the WBFF. There are also books, YouTube videos, exhibitions and demonstrations for aspiring artists; Mr. Schwartz got his start taking classes at a nearby bonsai nursery he happened upon one day.
“One certainly needs an understanding of the tree being worked on, how best to maintain its maximum health while being in a small pot and how the tree will behave in whatever section of the country you are in,” Mr. Schwartz says. “Horticultural knowledge is an essential part of bonsai — there is not a ‘one method works for all trees’ approach.”
Once a tree — which can be grown from seeds, purchased ready to go or even harvested from the wild like in the olden days — and an appropriate pot have been chosen, the imagination takes hold.
“There is something really exciting and invigorating in having a new tree, the possibilities that it may present for unique designs,” Mr. Schwartz says. “That’s a really fun stage, where you might just think about several designs for weeks or months or even longer before you actually commit and start working on the tree.”
Both the bonsai creator and the tree itself have a say in what its final form will be, the artist coaxing the trunk, branches and leaves into their vision yet adhering to the essence of the plant — vital, as it is supposed to appear to have grown that way without human intervention.
“I believe that in the bonsai I want to get, it is important to be able to feel how the tree has lived in nature,” Mr. Fujikawa explains. “When I find a tree that I want to make, I look at the whole tree, then I decide the front of the tree based on the trunk pattern, then I decide the branches that are needed and then I shape the bonsai. The method requires basic rules, techniques and sensitivity.”
The front of the bonsai is considered the best view, and branches are then pruned to avoid perfect symmetry and leave just the right open spaces in between. New shoots can be pinched back to keep the branches growing only where they’re wanted. Each branch that remains is “wired” — wrapped with thin, flexible wire and carefully bent into shape so that it will twist and turn in just the way the artist envisions.
“Past these more technical aspects are the artistic, and even spiritual, connections to the art form,” Mr. Schwartz adds.
It takes time and plenty of patience for these threedimensional, living artworks to take shape, and practitioners can work on a single tree for decades, its form constantly fluctuating out of necessity. Since the tree is alive, it will naturally change over time, with new branches growing, others dying and the original design shifting with these tides — something its creator must accept and appreciate.
“A BONSAI IS NEVER FINISHED,” MR. KIM SAYS. “HOWEVER, DURING THIS PROCESS WE CAN EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF TOUCHING THE TREE, GROWING, CHANGING AND BEING TOGETHER.”
To many practitioners, this never-ending process and the lessons learned throughout it are just as important as the way their bonsai appears. Most see more than just a miniature tree; it symbolizes patience, tranquility, stability, harmony, balance, reflection, a deep association with nature and the peace felt throughout its creation.
“Working on bonsai encourages mindfulness and a meditative connection with the natural world,” Mr. Schwartz says. “It can be quite peaceful and therapeutic to work on a tree, being extremely focused on the tasks at hand and being present in the moment.”
Along with grounding both viewers and artists in the present, bonsai’s branches also reach into the future, in a way. Some can live to be hundreds of years old, outsurviving their original creators by centuries. Mr. Fujikawa has a bonsai called “Houou (Phoenix),” an Ezo spruce that he estimates at 800 years old, which won the highest award for the mini trees in Japan. “I believe it is important to connect the bonsai I have owned or been involved with to the future,” he says. “Time spent with a bonsai is a good time in one’s life, and the feelings and history of the bonsai are passed down from generation to generation.”
The wisdom and rewards that bonsai leave along their creators’ trail is a big reason so many decide to dedicate their lives to the ageless art and to pass it along so that others will have a chance to shape these trees to their present.
“A bonsai tree may be little, yet it possesses the magical ability to brighten people’s lives and bring happiness and tranquility, spreading from country to country for the benefit of the globe,” Mr. Kim says. “The bonsai that entirely fills our hearts is more than just one tree — it represents the past, present and future.”

THE BARN
word S by brad bartlett
A CULINARY GEM on the Plateau
If you spend time in and around Cashiers or Highlands, you’ll likely hear residents mention a special place just minutes from town.
The Barn — the culinary passion of owner and proprietor Kristin Jorgensen — has become an open secret on the plateau. More than a cooking school and culinary gathering spot, The Barn has become a sanctuary for those searching for genuine connections.
Rooted in her family’s legacy, Jorgensen has created what many of us crave in today’s world: a place to slow down, break bread, and drink wine over good stories in a community.
“Food has always been about more than sustenance for me,” Jorgensen says. “It’s about the joy that goes into making a meal that’s meant to be shared at a table surrounded by friends.”
The Barn’s popularity has soared — from on-site cooking classes to Foodie Field Trips in nearby Cashiers and Highlands. Now, Jorgensen is extending her passion for food and friendship to the community, inviting others to join her in discovering the next great meal.
FROM HUMBLE ROOTS TO NORTH CAROLINA’S FOODIE DESTINATION
The story of how Jorgensen brought The Barn to life is as magical as the experience within it. Nearly 35 years ago, her grandparents purchased The Barn, which was little more than a shell at the time and far from the cozy culinary haven it has become.
She reflects on her childhood visits with her grandparents, watching them build and restore The Barn, and how a return to these familiar grounds ultimately shaped her future.
After years in California’s restaurant scene, Jorgensen reached a crossroads in her career and personal life. As the saying goes, sometimes it takes coming home to find your way forward.
“I HAD TO STOP AND ASK MYSELF: WHAT DO I LOVE TO DO MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD? AND HOW DO I MAKE A BUSINESS OUT OF THAT? WHEN I STARTED DIVING DEEP INTO WHAT THAT WAS, IT BECAME CLEAR: I LOVE BEING IN THE KITCHEN WITH FRIENDS, DRINKING WINE, LEARNING NEW THINGS, AND TRYING NEW RECIPES.”
Eleven years ago, Jorgensen decided to turn her dream of sharing her love of food with friends and neighbors into reality. Returning to her roots, she purchased The Barn, hoping to create a space that explored the connection between passion and purpose.
“I always had a really deep connection with the property,” Kristin reflects. “I always remember the hard work my grandparents put into it, and I wanted to continue that legacy.”
It took a year and a half of careful renovations to transform the space into what she envisioned: a place where the joy of cooking could be shared and classes felt less like lessons and more like evenings with old friends.
Now, eight years since opening its doors to the public, The Barn has become more successful than Jorgensen ever imagined. It offers residents and visitors a safe place to slow down, create something delicious, and connect with others over a shared love of good food.
A KITCHEN WHERE EVERYONE HAS A SEAT AT THE TABLE
A key element of The Barn is the cooking experience — a hands-on, interactive class where Kristin shares her latest recipes and culinary expertise.
From small group classes to the off-site Foodie Field Trips, cooking classes at The Barn feel less like formal instruction and more like gathering at a friend’s house for an evening of culinary adventure.
In Jorgensen’s warm, rustic kitchen, small groups gather around the counter to learn everything from seasonal Appalachian cooking (an homage to her roots in the region) to creative wine pairings (expertise gleaned from her time in the West Coast valleys).
While public classes draw locals and visitors, The Barn is especially known for its private experiences. Groups of friends celebrating milestone birthdays, companies seeking unique teambuilding activities, and even cozy bachelorettes (as Jorgensen affectionately calls them) find their way down the winding Appalachian road.
The focus is always on fresh, local ingredients — a philosophy that comes naturally in a region rich with small farms and food artisans. When she gets the chance, Kristin enjoys taking those same learning experiences on the road.
GOING BEYOND
THE
BARN WITH FOODIE FIELD TRIPS
Ask Jorgensen about her favorite part of leading cooking experiences at The Barn, and she’ll quickly mention those that happen beyond its walls.
“WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO IS EAT, DRINK, AND TRAVEL. I FOUND THE PERFECT WAY TO CONNECT THAT WITH THE BARN WHEN PEOPLE STARTED ASKING ME, “WHEN CAN I GO WITH YOU ON YOUR NEXT TRIP?” OR “WHERE DO YOU GET THESE INGREDIENTS?” I WANTED TO FIND A WAY TO BRING PEOPLE ALONG WITH ME — AND THAT’S WHERE THE FOODIE FIELD TRIPS WAS BORN.”
Seeing that people were hungry for her inside knowledge, Jorgensen transformed her supply runs into curated culinary adventures. Today, her Foodie Field Trips guide small groups through Western North Carolina’s vibrant food landscape, introducing them to some of the area’s most talented artisans and producers.
These excursions, which often include the hourlong scenic drive to Asheville, allow participants to meet the bakers, butchers, and craftspeople who make the area so special.
For Jorgensen, it’s a way to give back to those who help her keep the food and wine flowing at The Barn while fostering appreciation for culinary experts in the region.
“It’s such a simple and fun way to support local farms and bakers,” she says. “I want to support those people as much as I can and help them know that The Barn is here as a partner in our passion for great food and drink.”
LOOKING FORWARD: THE BARN BRINGS FOODIE FUN TO CASHIERS
As The Barn’s reputation has grown, so has Jorgensen’s vision for what’s possible. Her latest venture brings the magic of The Barn closer to town with a brand-new wineshop in one of Cashiers’ most charming historic buildings.
Housed in the community’s original post office from 1890, Jorgensen is proud to offer Cashiers residents a new way to explore her world.
“I’M EXTREMELY PASSIONATE ABOUT BEING ABLE TO SHARE OUR ORIGINAL SPACE WITH PEOPLE, BUT MY LOVE FOR WINE IS NOW OUTGROWING THE CONSTRAINTS OF THE BARN — WHICH IS WHY I’M SO EXCITED TO BRING THE SAME EXPERIENCE TO TOWN IN CASHIERS.”
The plans for the new space make it clear that The Barn in Cashiers will go far beyond your typical bottle shop. The building’s upstairs is being transformed into a teaching kitchen, and the grounds are being renovated to include
bocce courts and a garden. This addition makes The Barn’s experiences more accessible while maintaining their intimate feel.
Jorgensen envisions this new wineshop as a community hub where visitors can drop in and get a taste of what’s already happening just outside of town — expanding the opportunity for everyone to experience the best in dining and community.
“MY DREAM IS THAT THIS POST-OFFICETURNED-WINESHOP BECOMES A BIG COMMUNITY SPACE WHERE YOU CAN DROP IN AND PICNIC, PLAY BOCCE, DRINK WINE, AND LEARN ABOUT FOOD AND DRINK — ALL IN THIS SPACE THAT ALLOWS US TO REACH SO MANY MORE PEOPLE.”
The new space — called La Poste, named for the French postal service — will host creative workshops, cooking classes, and gardening opportunities, expanding The Barn’s offerings beyond culinary pursuits.
While The Barn itself remains a special destination 11 minutes from town, this new venue offers a more spontaneous way to experience Jorgensen’s unique brand of hospitality.
“We’ll keep doing classes in both places,” she says, her excitement evident as she describes the possibilities. “But now we can reach more people, offer different experiences, and keep learning new things together.”
It’s a perfect blend of growth and tradition, much like a well-aged wine — something Jorgensen knows quite a bit about.
A NORTH CAROLINA SPOT WHERE FOOD, WINE, & COMMUNITY MEET
Once you visit The Barn — whether at the original space or the brand-new wineshop in Cashiers — you’ll quickly see why Jorgensen’s dream has captured so many hearts.
What began as a family’s summer retreat has evolved into something extraordinary: a celebration of food, wine, and the simple pleasures of gathering together.
“Being able to reach more people, expand our classes, and dive deeper into wine education here in North Carolina — that’s what excited me,” she shares with an enthusiasm as warm as the welcome visitors receive the moment they step up to her kitchen counter.
When life feels like it’s moving far too fast, Jorgensen’s corner of the world offers a chance to slow down. It’s a place where strangers become friends over a shared meal and where the art of cooking is less about perfection and more about pure, simple joy.
The next time you’re in town, make sure to add a visit to The Barn to your list. Whether you find yourself traveling down that winding Appalachian road to the original Barn or stepping into the historical post office in Cashiers, you’ll discover what Jorgensen has always known: the best recipes are made with equal parts good food, fine wine, and genuine connection.

FROM CLUBS to CLOSINGS
WITH BROKER EDDY MCDONALD
word S by robert mceveety

FROM THE FAIRWAYS TO THE FOOTHILLS, EDDY MCDONALD’S JOURNEY IN THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU IS A STORY OF PASSION, ADAPTABILITY, AND DEEP COMMUNITY ROOTS. AS A FORMER PGA GOLFER WHO TRADED IN HIS CLUBS FOR REAL ESTATE LISTINGS, MCDONALD’S CAREER TRANSITION IN 1999 MARKED THE BEGINNING OF A REMARKABLE CHAPTER IN LOCAL REAL ESTATE THAT CONTINUES TO SHAPE THE REGION TODAY.
When Eddy took a position at Highlands Falls Country Club in 1995, he fell in love with the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau and knew he’d found home. The Plateau’s tight-knit community spirit captivated him from the start. Here, he found a place where neighbors come together in times of need, natural beauty changes daily, and city life feels worlds away. Clinging to his newfound passion for the area and following his interest in development, Eddy began his real estate career
at Highlands Cove (now called Old Edwards Club at Highlands Cove), where he spent 13 years helping it grow from its first home into the thriving community it is today.
Now a veteran broker with over two decades of experience, McDonald’s approach to real estate is deeply influenced by his background as a golf pro, in which precision, patience, and personalized service are paramount. His transition from PGA golfer to real estate broker might seem unexpected. Still, those who know him understand how naturally these two careers intertwined, requiring an intimate knowledge of the landscape and an ability to build lasting relationships.
After years of running his own real estate firm, McDonald found his home at Silver Creek Real Estate Group, where his commitment to exceptional customer service aligned perfectly with the company’s values. His deep knowledge
of the Highlands-Cashiers area and his genuine passion for the region’s outdoor offerings — from its hidden fishing spots to the expansive trails of Panthertown Valley — give him a unique perspective that benefits both buyers and sellers.
When he’s not helping clients find their perfect mountain property, McDonald loves exploring the outdoor paradise he calls home with his daughter Sara. He has traded his professional golf clubs for hiking boots and fishing gear, embracing the Plateau’s natural wonders with the same enthusiasm he once reserved for the golf course.
As the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau continues to evolve, Eddy’s role extends beyond that of a typical real estate broker. His 30-plus years in
the community have given him a front-row seat to the region’s growth while maintaining an appreciation for the laid-back lifestyle that makes the Plateau so special. Whether working with firsttime buyers or seasoned investors, his approach remains consistent: listen carefully, understand deeply, and serve exceptionally.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT LED YOU TO WORK IN REAL ESTATE.
I started in the golf business, first as a player and then moving on to being a PGA Club Pro. I was intrigued with the real estate business and wanted to be more in control of my time.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A REAL ESTATE BROKER, AND HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE SHAPED YOUR APPROACH TO WORKING WITH CLIENTS?
I have been a broker since 1999, and I have always tried to treat my clients as I would like to be treated. I listen to the needs of each of my clients and use my local experience to help them find a home or plot of land that will fulfill their wants.
WHAT DREW YOU TO SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP, AND HOW HAS THE TEAM INFLUENCED YOUR CAREER?
After owning my own real estate firm for several years, I was looking for a place that would provide me with all the tools I was used to and an owner who shared my vision of providing exceptional customer service. Jochen, the owner of Silver Creek Real Estate Group, provides his agents with everything they can dream of to succeed.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT SELLING REAL ESTATE, HOW DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING YOUR TIME? DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES OR INTERESTS THAT YOUR CLIENTS MIGHT FIND SURPRISING?
I love spending time outdoors — hunting, fishing, or just hiking. I no longer play golf, but I love being out in the woods and spend as much time there as I can.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON ON THE PLATEAU, AND WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL TO YOU?
I love the fact you can experience all four seasons on the Plateau. If anything, winter is my least favorite.
IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE DON’T-MISS EVENT OR FESTIVAL ON THE PLATEAU, WHAT WOULD IT BE, AND WHY?
The fireworks on the Fourth of July. The patriotism and celebration of America are amazing and should be done more than a few times a year.
THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU IS A POPULAR DESTINATION. WHAT IS ONE HIDDEN GEM OR LOCAL SPOT YOU LOVE THAT MIGHT BE LESSER KNOWN?
Although not lesser known, Panthertown Valley provides a multitude of ecosystems to explore and unwind in. While I will not give away my favorite fishing spot, the quality of trout fishing locally would surprise even the most experienced of fishermen.
OUTSIDE OF THE PLATEAU, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION, AND HOW DOES IT INSPIRE OR RECHARGE YOU?
Although I do not get to enjoy it enough, we have had a place in Destin, FL, since the mid-1970s, and I enjoy those beautiful beaches when I get a chance.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A FIRST-TIME BUYER ON MAKING THE MOST OF THEIR REAL ESTATE SEARCH ON THE PLATEAU?
Make a list of wants and needs and have an idea of which areas provide those. Make sure you have an agent who will listen to your wants and needs and who has knowledge and expertise in those areas.
WHAT IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL THING YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF OR OTHERS WHILE WORKING AS A BROKER?
I’m a very good listener, and in this business, you have to listen to your clients and sometimes read between the lines. They will tell you what they want, but you still need to have a good sense of their family and how they live.
WHAT ARE YOUR PROFESSIONAL OR PERSONAL GOALS FOR 2025, AND HOW ARE YOU WORKING TOWARD THEM?
My goals every day and year are the same. I try to provide exceptional service to all my clients, whether buyers, sellers, or renters, and to listen to my clients’ needs and provide exactly what they need from start to finish.
CAN YOU SHARE A CAREER MOMENT OR SUCCESS THAT YOU’RE ESPECIALLY PROUD OF AND THAT HIGHLIGHTS YOUR APPROACH TO REAL ESTATE?
Every closing has issues and hurdles that no one could foresee. It’s how you handle those issues for your clients and still get to the finish line.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE GREATEST RESOURCE OR STRENGTH OF THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU COMMUNITY, AND HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF CONTRIBUTING TO IT?
The true community feel and how everyone comes together in moments of need are what make it so special. I’ve been here for over 30 years and cannot imagine living anywhere else.
IF YOU COULD GIVE SOMEONE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE ABOUT LIVING ON THE PLATEAU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Be prepared for the more laid-back lifestyle. There is a reason people come here to relax. We do not have all the perks of living in the city.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST ABOUT WORKING IN REAL ESTATE ON THE PLATEAU, AND WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED EVERY DAY?
Corny but very true, I get fulfillment from providing a service that helps people achieve their dreams and changes their lives.

Born and raised in Oxford, Mississippi, where generational roots run deep, Julia's love of all things reminiscent of "home," was sparked by visits to her grandmother's national landmark home, Ammadelle. From family meals and heirlooms shared to architectural endeavors, her family left its mark on Oxford. Her grandfather even built the city's golf course, now the local park, and employed his five sons to make sure every golfer had a caddy for their game.
After receiving her Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in graphic design from the University of Mississippi in 2014, Julia went on to purchase Delta Grind, a family-owned business, in 2016. Her creative spirit found immense satisfaction in watching something hand-crafted turn into a beautiful final product — no matter the medium. Since taking over Delta Grind, Julia has successfully

AGING

TIMELESS
Spring has nearly sprung in beautiful Western North Carolina, revealing showy azaleas, pink and white mountain laurel, and show-stopping hydrangeas and rhododendrons. It’s the time of year we start shedding our winter coats and revealing a little more of our own beauty. But after a long, cold winter, our skin may not be quite ready for prime time.
Taking care of our skin is not vanity but an essential tool in our aging boldly toolkit. Caring for our skin is no different
firmness it once had. This means that when we frown, laugh, or squint, wrinkles begin to form at the lines of expression. Sun exposure, environmental toxins, diet, smoking, and other factors increase the risk of developing wrinkles. And menopause can cause dryness, decreased firmness, and breakouts, and skin becomes thinner and more prone to bruising and marking.
SO, WHAT CAN WE DO FOR OUR SKIN?
WELL, IF A REALTOR’S MANTRA IS “LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION,”
“The most important thing we can do for our skin is use sunscreen with an SPF of 35 or higher,” says dermatology nurse practitioner Lindsey Koach. “It prevents skin cancers and premature aging.” Koach says to apply sunscreen every
SKIN CARE TIPS FOR RADIANT AGING
day, even on cloudy days or if you are inside.
“We see many skin cancers on the left side of people’s faces or on their left arm from exposure while driving.”
In addition to sunscreen, protecting our skin barrier is critical, says Tarah Grillo, licensed esthetician and co-owner of Tarah’s Beauty Bar. “Keep your skin healthy and balanced. Don’t overdo it with harsh scrubbing. Exfoliate regularly and hydrate well. Also, use a good retinoid and vitamin C serum. We don’t need to use abrasive products to achieve results; they only strip our skin. Many more gentle options are now available.”
It’s also important to know that certain products can help make other products more effective. Hyaluronic acid is great for plumping the skin and helping to retain moisture. Use it before applying your moisturizer to give skin an extra hydrating boost, says Grillo. And skin care does not have to cost a fortune. “You don’t have to invest hundreds of dollars. You can start out small with just one product that’s clinically proven.”
A GOOD DAILY SKIN CARE ROUTINE
“It’s important to take the best care we can of our skin; it’s our body’s largest organ,” says Koach. “A good morning routine involves using a cleanser,
followed by a toner — which helps calm redness and inflammation — a hydrating serum such as vitamin C to help brighten skin, and a good eye cream,” says Koach. “Most people could benefit from adding a prescription-strength retinoid at night to help fade dark spots and keep pores from getting clogged. Some people choose to exfoliate their skin a few times a week as well, which can help de-clog pores, smooth the skin’s surface, and remove the dead cells that make skin look dull.”
Koach recommends finding a line of skin care you like and sticking with it. At Highlands Dermatology, Koach and many of the staff use ZO® Skin Health, and many of their patients have achieved good results. Grillo’s preferred skin care lines include Éminence Organic Skin Care and skinbetter science®.
And what are their clients’ biggest skin concerns?
Dark spots, followed by fine lines and deep wrinkles. “At least several times a week, people ask about treatments we offer for fixing dark spots,” says Koach. “If the spots occur on a person’s face, it can make them feel self-conscious and not as confident as they could be. Dark spots can be minimized through the use of topical substances, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing.”

EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS FOR SKIN CONCERNS
In addition to a good skin care routine, many people elect to incorporate other antiaging treatments. Treatments can “soften things that bother us,” says Koach. “Our goal is to help people feel refreshed and look as natural as possible, not to change how they look.”
These treatments have come a long way in the past 20 years. Many have little or no downtime. Some of the treatments include:
• Wrinkle relaxers such as Botox, which temporarily freeze the muscles and nerves at the injection site, making skin appear smooth
• Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, which plump up skin, filling in fine lines and wrinkles to reduce their appearance
• Chemical peels, which remove dead skin cells, resurface, and reveal younger skin
• Laser resurfacing, which boosts collagen production and provides younger-looking skin
Grillo also recommends gentle chemical peels with no downtime. “Chemical peels contain different types of acids. An esthetician can guide you on which peel will be the most appropriate and beneficial to treat your specific skin care concerns.” Other popular treatments include HydraFacials and antiaging microneedling, which is a minimally invasive treatment that uses tiny needles to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process. Microneedling can help treat a variety of skin concerns, including acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, enlarged pores, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and crow’s feet.
Although clients now have an abundance of options for skin care treatments, Grillo says she will always take a holistic approach to skincare. “Eighty percent of what you do for your skin, you do at home with your own routine. We are here to build on that and enhance your natural beauty.”

AS THE CALENDAR FLIPS TO MARCH, IT HERALDS THE ARRIVAL OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH — A FOURWEEK CELEBRATION OF FEMALE ACCOMPLISHMENTS, CONTRIBUTIONS, AND GROUNDBREAKING ACHIEVEMENTS THROUGHOUT THE AGES. THIS YEAR, THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY ALLIANCE ANNOUNCED THE THEME “MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER! WOMEN EDUCATING & INSPIRING GENERATIONS.”
In North Carolina, we certainly have our fair share of remarkable women who have made history with their indomitable spirit, leadership, and contributions to the betterment of society. Women whose fierce determination helped shape the history of the Carolinas and beyond. They didn’t just exist in the background of history — they made waves and shattered glass ceilings.
Spotlighting these trailblazers are our region’s leading female academics who unearth their grit, grace, and groundbreaking achievements.
LOUISIANA LETA
“LULA” OWL GLOYNE (1891-1985)
A seasoned historian and professor at Western Carolina University’s (WCU) History Department, Dr. Susan M. Abram, Ph.D., has spent decades unraveling the rich history and culture of the Cherokee people. Her connection to the community is immensely personal. Having lived near the Qualla Boundary since 1989 and teaching at WCU since 2009, she has cultivated lasting friendships, particularly with Cherokee women involved in the arts and crafts scene.
As president of the North Carolina Trail of Tears Association, Dr. Abram’s research has taken a powerful turn, focusing on the often-overlooked experiences of Cherokee women during the forced Removal era. She’s also uncovering the pivotal role these women played in securing suffrage, shedding light on their strength, resilience, and contributions that continue to shape their community’s legacy.
For Dr. Abram, nurse Louisiana Leta “Lula” Owl Gloyne is a true female pioneer. The first Native American to become a registered nurse and the only Eastern Cherokee to serve as an officer in World War I, Gloyne worked tirelessly with compassion, skill, and laser focus on goals, putting others’ needs before her own.
After a stellar military career, rising to the rank of second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War I, Gloyne returned home and recognized the need for a community hospital in Cherokee, North Carolina. After three years of tireless advocacy (even testifying to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1934), the Bureau of Indian Affairs finally built a hospital for the Cherokee People.
Lula Owl Gloyne didn’t just stop at breaking barriers — she built a legacy that continues to inspire. Her dedication to community health earned her a place in the spotlight, with District 23 of the North Carolina Nurses Association recognizing her work in 1978 and her induction into the North Carolina Nurses Association Hall of Fame in 2015. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians bestowed her with the honorific title of Beloved Woman in 1984 — a title reserved for those who embody extraordinary leadership and service. And the accolades didn’t stop there. In 2022, the Cherokee Indian Hospital Foundation established the Lula Owl Gloyne Person of Excellence Award, a fitting tribute to a woman whose passion for community health care set the gold standard for generations to come.
What makes Gloyne such a powerful role model?
“CHEROKEE WOMEN HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LIFE-GIVERS AND CARETAKERS,” EXPLAINS DR. ABRAM. “THOUGH WOMEN IN GENERAL EXPERIENCED DISCRIMINATION DURING THIS TIME, GLOYNE’S SERVICE TO HER COUNTRY IN THE MILITARY AND THEN IN PUBLIC SERVICE TO HER COMMUNITY GAINED HER THE RESPECT OF ALL. IF SHE SAW A BOULDER IN THE WAY, WITH DETERMINATION AND FOCUS, SHE FOUND A WAY AROUND IT BY MEETING CHALLENGES HEAD-ON. SHE WAS LIVING PROOF THAT WOMEN, INCLUDING CHEROKEE WOMEN, COULD WORK WITH DIGNITY, SKILL, AND PURPOSE TO ACCOMPLISH THEIR GOALS.”
GERTRUDE DILLS MCKEE (1885-1948)
As executive director of the Cashiers Historical Society and scholar of the evolution of women’s labor in Appalachia, Amelia Golcheski is deeply invested in preserving and exploring the stories of the women who shaped the region’s history. The daughter of an Appalachian mother, she was inspired to research women like her who were on the front lines of the care economy that significantly shaped Appalachia at the end of the 20th century.
Civic leader and politician Gertrude Dills McKee is Golcheski’s historical South Carolina superwoman. Born in 1885 to a prominent Dillsboro family, McKee rewrote the rulebook for women in politics. In 1930, she etched her name in history as the first woman to serve in the North Carolina State Senate — a groundbreaking achievement in an era when women were still fighting for equal representation.
Over her three terms, McKee became a tireless advocate for education and social reform, championing legislations that transformed the lives of women and children across the state. Her efforts helped improve the quality of education, ensuring that future generations had access to better opportunities. Beyond the classroom,
McKee was a driving force behind labor reform, pushing for fair wages and workplace protections that uplifted working mothers and women across industries.
Married to prominent Sylva businessman Ernest Lyndon, McKee leveraged her social stature as a force for meaningful change — even helping turn Cashiers into the tourist destination it is today. “Together, they purchased the property that was developed into the High Hampton Inn,” recalls Golcheski. “This made Cashiers a summer destination for Southerners. Advocating for roads, new highways, and byways such as the Blue Ridge Parkway enabled tourism to become Jackson County’s largest economic engine.”
A respected advocate for social reform such as social security for the needy, McKee’s political
work helped pave the way for greater female involvement in the state’s government. She was elected for a fourth term in 1948, but sadly, she passed away before assuming public office once again.
“GERTRUDE DILLS MCKEE ILLUSTRATES HOW BEING INVOLVED AT THE LOCAL LEVEL AND BEING PASSIONATE ABOUT LOCAL ISSUES CAN PROPEL YOU TO HIGHER POSITIONS OF POWER,” ENTHUSES GOLCHESKI. “YOUNG WOMEN CAN BE INSPIRED BY HER THOUGHTFUL AND PRAGMATIC LEADERSHIP, WHICH HELPED IMPROVE HER COMMUNITY. BY CRACKING THAT GLASS CEILING IN NORTH CAROLINA STATE POLITICS, MCKEE PAVED THE WAY FOR ALL OTHER WOMEN WHO FOLLOWED IN HER FOOTSTEPS TO ELECTED OFFICE.”
NORTH CAROLINA
Wonder Women
HARRIET JACOBS (1813-1897)
Born into slavery in Edenton, Harriet Jacobs didn’t just escape bondage — she wrote the book on it. Her 1861 memoir, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” is a searing, groundbreaking account that ensured the world knew the truth about slavery from a woman’s perspective.
DOLLEY MADISON (1768-1849)
Sure, Dolley Madison is best remembered for her White House parties, but don’t let the tea fool you — this First Lady was no lightweight. Born in Guilford County and married to James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, she used her charm and savvy to shape early U.S. politics, proving diplomacy isn’t just for the men in suits.
CHARLOTTE HAWKINS BROWN (1883-1961)
This powerhouse educator didn’t just talk about changing the world — she built the classrooms where it would start. Opening Sedalia’s Palmer Memorial Institute in 1902, she turned dreams into diplomas for generations of Black students, proving that education is the ultimate form of empowerment.
ELLEN BLACK WINSTON (1903-1984)
Think of Ellen as the original champion for family welfare. As the first U.S. Commissioner of Welfare, the Bryson City native turned bureaucratic red tape into safety nets for families, transforming North Carolina’s social services — and making a splash on the national stage while she was at it.

MAXIMIZE THE IMPACT OF STATEMENT PIECES BY PLAYING UP THEIR PERSONALITY

AS MAXIMALISM CONTINUES ITS RETURN IN FULL FORCE, IT IS WORTHWHILE TO CONSIDER THE ITEMS THAT MAKE UP THESE SPACES: EYE-CAPTURING AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING STATEMENT PIECES THAT COMMAND A ROOM. THEY CAN TAKE THE SHAPE OF A BOLD WORK OF ART, TRANSFORMATIVE LIGHT FIXTURE, ANTIQUE HEIRLOOM OR COMPELLING ARCHITECTURAL FEATURE.
While distinctive pieces can make for impressive spaces, they’re not the simplest to design around. Should that object be allowed to consume the room? Is it a balancing act in which the other elements of the room remain neutral? It depends on preference.
On one hand, pairing a focal item with something similarly captivating can enhance the drama of the room. The Temptress, styled by Sarah Stacey, interior designer and founder of Sarah Stacey Interior Design in Austin, Texas, for instance, features a knockout bathroom in which the wallpaper and stained glass both make a statement. “We are going for eclectic and maximalist,” Ms. Stacey says. “It’s automatically not formulaic.”
Alternatively, a designer could opt to position such a piece against a more naked backdrop, as done in the Fulton Fire project by Lauren Svenstrup, interior designer and founder of Chicago-based Studio Sven. A two-story, flame-inspired artwork connects two floors over an otherwise minimalist backdrop with a simple black-and-white color scheme.
“It’s about setting your priorities visually,” adds Corey Damen Jenkins, interior designer and founder of Corey Damen Jenkins & Associates in New York. “When you’re casting a movie, you can’t have six lead actors and actresses. You have one lead actor, one lead actress, and then you have a supporting cast. Once you’ve established what the lead actor or actress is going to be within the design, then everything else naturally falls to a supporting role.”
When designing, it is best to start with an existing collection, particularly sentimental items and family heirlooms. Not only is there history in them to inform the design, but they are meaningful to the person living in the space.
“Nothing is special in a room if everything is brand new,” Mr. Jenkins says. “There’s nothing to talk about. We encourage our clients to lean into
the backstories of the things that they own and we display these items in ways that people can speak to what they’re seeing. We work with a lot of young couples who are gifted a credenza or a grandfather clock from a great uncle or a relative who’s passed away and they don’t know what to do with it, but they know that there is great value in it.”
As a bonus, heirlooms and antiques promote sustainability. “They’re made so well,” Ms. Stacey says — especially important, as today’s speedy overproduction of goods is compromising quality, sometimes even within the luxury sector.
“We did a lovely home in Cohasset, Massachusetts, where the clients had a real bevy of antiquity that came with the wife’s inheritance from her family,” Mr. Jenkins says. “She had a pair of vintage black oars, used centuries before, so we hung them on the wall as art. When you first walk into the house, you’re immediately greeted by something that she grew up with as a small child, that has provenance, a history in her family.”
The Cohasset residence also includes a garden room that features a scenic mural from Europe. As with his previous analogy, Mr. Jenkins allowed the mural to act as lead actor, paired with a supporting cast that includes a floral-inspired chandelier, plants placed throughout the room and coordinating tones.
“There’s a really over-the-top, gorgeous, palm chandelier — crystal encrusted — from the 1930s, that the moment that I saw it, I instantly knew that we had to have it in that room,” he says. “I paired it with this wallcovering that looked like branches with florals. It’s this special moment, crystals dripping down from the branches above.”
Of course, while it is important that the items in a room share connection, it is not necessary to be overly matching. Mixing metals, colors and wood finishes is completely acceptable and creates interest.
Cohesiveness, in general, is an important principle to consider when incorporating statement pieces into a space. The overarching theme of a room should be evident and intentional, carried throughout all its facets. Mr. Jenkins similarly let nature influence a library he designed for the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse in New York.
The only true rules relate to the practical — like forgoing hanging that same eight-foot palm chandelier over a bathtub, for example.
“THE CHALLENGE IS TO NOT GET TOO CAUGHT UP IN THE RULES OF DESIGN,” MR. JENKINS EXPLAINS. “THERE’S GREAT BEAUTY AND FREEDOM IN LETTING GO.”
When looking beyond a client’s existing collection, there are a number of places to source, online and off. In-person auctions, estate sales, flea markets, antique malls and traveling uncover a world of antiques, art, furniture and décor.
“THERE’S A LOT OF VALUE IN GETTING OUT THERE AND SEEING WHAT THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER,” MR. JENKINS ADVISES. “WE SHOULD NEVER LOSE THE WONDER AND EXCITEMENT FOR THE HUNT — THAT’S WHERE IT’S REALLY AT. WHEN YOU GET OUT THERE AS A SLEUTH OR A DETECTIVE AND FIND COOL, UNUSUAL THINGS THAT SET THE PROJECT APART, THINGS THAT NO ONE ELSE IS GOING TO HAVE, THAT IS TRUE, GENUINE INTERIOR DESIGN.”
The internet does have its place, though, and can be incredibly useful for finding intriguing artists or something specific. “There are so many resources now,” Ms. Svenstrup says. “Google can be magical, but there’s also 1stDibs, which connects you with a lot of artists and artisans that you otherwise wouldn’t necessarily find if you’re just perusing the internet. It’s a really great resource for vintage pieces, but it also connects you with people. Etsy has [also] been a really amazing resource because it connects you directly with the creator.”
To truly get personal, Ms. Svenstrup frequently facilitates commissioned artworks. Her projects reflect the hobbies and interests of her clients, and commissions are physical embodiments of these personality facets.
Take, for instance, the previously mentioned artwork in Fulton Fire. The homeowner is passionate about fire dancing, so there are nods to this hobby throughout the home, from a downstairs dance studio to a stunning photograph of one of the client’s routines to the massive, fire-inspired artwork alongside the staircase.
“We wanted a very large, impactful piece of art,” Ms. Svenstrup says. “The idea was for it to feel like fire was growing up from the main floor into the second level. It transforms the space.”
In a separate project in a Ritz Carlton apartment, she brought to life her client’s interest in mountaineering with an oversized image of National Geographic photojournalist Cory Richards, who famously shot a selfie of himself after he survived an avalanche. The theme continues with a custom, abstract ceiling mimicking the height of mountains.
“I love a good hand-painted ceiling mural, especially in Chicago, where our wall space is limited and we have a lot of high-rise clients in which the view is part of the design,” Ms. Svenstrup adds. “How else do you compete with a panoramic view of the city?”
And sometimes it’s not about what is brought in, but rather the bones of the property — its architecture — that draw attention. Another compelling feature of Fulton Fire is the “moon gate” that separates the bedroom from a meditation room. In Buddhist culture, a moon gate is a symbol of birth and renewal. Symbolically and almost literally, being so near the foot of the bed, it is an incredible way to start each day anew.
REGARDLESS OF IF A MAJOR FOCAL POINT IS AN IMPRESSIVE ARCHITECTURAL FEATURE, BEAUTIFULLY DONE WORK OF ART OR PRICELESS ANTIQUE, WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IS TO INCORPORATE THOUGHTFUL DESIGN THAT RESPECTS ITS IMPACT AND FURTHER EMPHASIZES ITS GRANDEUR WITH COMPLEMENTING OBJECTS AND FEATURES. STATEMENT PIECES SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THE HOME’S INHABITANTS, THEIR HISTORY, INTERESTS AND PERSONALITY.
Mr. Jenkins likens creating a space for his clients to a new baby. “When that baby is delivered, it needs to look like them,” he says. “The more you can incorporate pieces that have resonance to them emotionally, some sort of attachment, the more tailored and couture the house feels. That’s the goal.”

SIMS VALLEY
At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, and a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them.
Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often designs for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this oneof-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of the Smokies blend together for an exceptional outdoor experience. Go shopping or dining in Cashiers or Highlands, explore Nantahala National Forest, take a boat ride on Lake Glenville, or enjoy the many amenities that Sims Valley has to offer.
POTENTIAL CLEARED VIEW FROM MLS #104191
The Sims family homestead still stands and now serves as a community gathering place. In fact, there is no shortage of places for the community to gather together at Sims Valley. Gothic Revival
word S by ellen jone S
Paris is no stranger to stealing the spotlight, but when Notre-Dame Cathedral went up in flames in 2019, the world held its breath. Centuries of stories in stone were reduced to mere rubble and ash in a matter of hours.
Only one question remained: how do you rebuild a masterpiece that’s been the jewel of Gothic architecture for 850 years? In this case, with grit, genius, and a dash of 21st-century magic. As Notre-Dame unveiled its rejuvenated splendor in December 2024, we saw not just a restoration, but a resurrection on the Île de la Cité.
A GOTHIC SHOWSTOPPER
Iconic, influential, and impossible to ignore, NotreDame Cathedral is the epitome of divine artistry. From its ribbed vaults and flying buttresses to its jaw-dropping rose windows, this 12th-century marvel rewrote the rules of architecture. And let’s not forget Viollet-le-Duc’s legendary spire, now gloriously recreated after its fiery demise, soaring heavenward like a diva hitting a high note.
Over the centuries, Notre-Dame has borne witness to history’s biggest events, from royal coronations to revolutions and wartime survival. It’s the inspiration for literature and movies and has long symbolized both spiritual devotion and artistic grandeur. Through it all, Notre-Dame has stood as a symbol of resilience, beauty, and the human spirit.
FROM ASHES TO AWE
The 2019 fire was a gut-punch to the world, reducing Notre-Dame’s roof and spire to ruins and leaving the cathedral a shadow of its former self. But instead of despair, the tragedy sparked a global call-to-arms. Donations poured in from every corner of the globe, with €846 million raised in a collective show of love.
Cue the artisans, architects, and historians who rolled up their sleeves to work magic. Using time-honored techniques — think handcarved stonework and medieval joinery — they painstakingly restored gargoyles, statues, and stained glass. Collapsed vaults have been

restored, the attic has been rebuilt, and the new Grand Organ sits proudly in a high gallery beneath the iconic rose window.
To reconstruct the spire and transept frameworks identically to Viollet-le-Duc’s 1860s restoration, the project used 1,500 oak trees covered in 250 tons of lead. During the 2024 Olympics, scaffolding was removed to give visitors to Paris a tantalizing glimpse of the restoration to be revealed just six months later.
Let’s talk stone. To reconstruct the collapsed vaults, replace fire-damaged coped wall stones, and completely resculpt statues at the gables and the tracery, high-quality limestone had to be found. The original stone was sourced from underground quarries beneath Paris, but these were no longer in use. The search for geologically compatible stone was immense. Finally, 1,300 cubic meters in total was sourced from nine quarries across the three regions of Bonneuil-enValois, Saint-Maximin, and Soissons.
Sitting 32 feet tall, Notre-Dame’s 18th-century Grand Organ is the largest in France. Miraculously,
it survived the fire, but its 8,000 pipes needed cleaning. Once done, getting them precisely tuned and harmonized to the cathedral’s acoustics took an incredible six months. Today, with no dust accumulation, the organ sounds brighter than ever.
OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW COOL
Notre-Dame’s makeover isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s about innovation. In 2015, the late architectural historian Andrew Tallon used high-precision 3D scanners to cover the entire monument, with drones accessing hard-to-reach areas. With millimeter-level precision, surveys and plans were created. His goal was to fully understand the building’s Gothic structure.
Little did he know, however, that his precise 3D model would go on to serve as the most instrumental tool for architects to restore Notre-Dame as painstakingly close to the original as possible. Although Tallon passed away in 2018, his digital

blueprint was nothing short of visionary. It’s a poignant testament to how one man’s passion for understanding the past became an indispensable tool for safeguarding the future.
CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES
The Notre-Dame restoration is a love letter to craftsmanship. Every stone block, every kaleidoscopic window, and every carved detail is a celebration of masterful artistry. It’s the kind of work that takes decades to perfect and generations to admire.
Sound familiar? It should. On the Plateau, the same dedication to quality elevates luxury homes into living masterpieces. Just as Notre-Dame’s revival honors the past while embracing the future, our thoughtfully crafted homes create legacies that last.
A CATHEDRAL AND A LESSON IN RESILIENCE
“You are the alchemists of this project, and you transformed coal into artistry,” an emotional Emmanuel Macron told the crowd ahead of Notre-Dame’s reopening. “The furnace of Notre-
Dame was a national scar, and you were its healing balm.”
Notre-Dame is more than just a cathedral; it’s a comeback story for the ages. Its restoration is proof that beauty, history, and cultural heritage are worth fighting for. It’s a reminder to preserve what matters — whether it’s an 850-yearold landmark or the timeless details of your own home.
As the restored Notre-Dame takes its place back in the Parisian skyline, it challenges us to think about our own spaces. How do we create beauty that lasts? How do we honor the stories our homes tell? Like the cathedral itself, the answer lies in thoughtful design, impeccable craftsmanship, and a commitment to enduring values for generations to come.
Our Lady is back, bolder and more beautiful than ever. And if it’s taught us anything, it’s this: timeless design isn’t just about looking good — it’s about enduring centuries, weathering storms, and rising from the ashes with unwavering strength.

TRUFFLE-HUNTING TOURS IN ITALY INVITE GUESTS TO BE PART OF THE FAMILY
word S by li S a klein
tHE AIR IS CRISP, BRANCHES RUSTLE ABOVE, FALLEN LEAVES CRUNCH UNDERFOOT. A FRIENDLY DOG RUSHES IN AND OUT BENEATH THE TREES, EXCITEDLY SNIFFING THE EARTH IN SEARCH OF HIS TARGET. HE STARTS CIRCLING A FIND, GINGERLY DIGGING INTO THE MOIST SOIL TO UNCOVER THE “BLACK GOLD” — A CULINARY TREASURE SOUGHT AFTER ALL OVER THE WORLD. THIS IS A MOMENT IN THE LIFE OF A TRUFFLE HUNTER AND YOU, TOO, ARE INVITED TO JOIN IN.
“What is extraordinary for me about truffle hunting is that you always feel as excited as a kid,” says Marino Cardelli, who grew up in the Abruzzo region of Italy and founded Experience BellaVita, offering tours with his family. “When the dog finds the truffle and you approach to uncover it, you never know what is hidden underneath. And those times that you uncover a big truffle, the excitement is over the stars.”
Truffles grow mostly in the colder months all over Europe — in France, Spain, Germany — and there’s even a variety in the northwestern United States. But some of the most prized come from Italy, especially the northern Piedmont region, home of the famed white truffles of Alba. Both white and black truffles can be found throughout the country in the north and along the central Apennine mountains.
Called tartufo in Italian, the truffle is an underground fungus, somewhere between a tuber and a mushroom — often lovingly referred to as a potato. With a distinctive aroma (which helps wild animals find it underground and spread its spores) and a rich, earthy, nutty, umami explosion of flavor, it grows on the roots of certain tree species (oak, willow, poplar, linden, hazelnut, beech, durmast) and needs very specific soil and climate conditions to thrive.
The white truffle, found September through January, is the rarest and has the strongest flavor and aroma. The black truffle, found November through March, can be cultivated, making it slightly less precious, but its sweet, versatile flavor still shines. There is also a summer-season truffle that is much milder, among several other varieties.
No matter the color, these picky little fungi are beloved by the choosiest of foodies and fetch prices ranging from a couple hundred into the thousands of dollars per ounce. The most expensive ever, a white truffle from Alba weighing over three pounds, brought in $330,000 at a charity auction in 2021. It is no wonder truffle hunters are out to find this underground gem — but in Italy, the search is a family affair worth much more than money.

The art of truffle hunting has been passed down through generations of Italian families for centuries. Their knowledge about where and how the fungi grow and techniques of using dogs and special spades to find and extract truffles without damaging them, the soil or tree roots is recognized on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
“TRUFFLE HUNTING HERE IS PROTECTED AND VERY SERIOUS,” SAYS BENEDETTA VIGANÒ OF GIORGIO VIGANÒ REAL ESTATE IN MILAN. “TRUFFLE HUNTERS HAVE TO BE LICENSED AND THE TRUFFLE GROUNDS ARE PROTECTED BY AN ANCIENT CODE OF HONOR.”
Part of the tartufao ( trifolao in Piedmont) code involves being very secretive about favorite spots to find their treasure, especially now that it sells for such a high bounty. Many even work under the cover of night.
“I know a truffle hunter who has not yet shared the secret spots with his children,” Mr. Cardelli says. “Fortunately, he has the GPS coordinates safely stored at his bank and the children will inherit them. There are many hunters who pass away without having shared their spots.”
Another secret to successful truffle hunting is specially trained dogs, who sniff out ripe truffles underground, help dig them out and even hand them right over in exchange for a treat. The Italian Lagotto Romagnolo is an iconic breed, but any type of dog that is on the smaller side (so its paws don’t damage the goods) can be taught to truffle.
“My uncle Adamo, a professional truffle hunter for the last 35 years, shares with me two dogs at the moment: a crazy-fast Weimaraner, who we call Jet for his speed, and Nero, a mutt,” Mr. Cardelli says, likening a trained dog to an athlete who must keep working at it, although they can learn in many ways. “Jet was meant to be a family

dog; however, he hung out with our professional dogs and he learned from them without proper training.”
Tartufai and their dogs have a special relationship and heritage that they pass along through their families and communities. In Abruzzo, three of every five people participate in the pastime, Mr. Cardelli says — some providing income and others as a hobby.
“In my family, my father got started together with other people in the community,” he says. “My older brother took on the passion too. I remember he had a dog and built a little cage for transporting him on his scooter. I got started around the age of six, going with my dad and brother; this is the norm for many kids around the area. When I moved abroad, I started realizing that we are incredibly lucky, and I started appreciating our customs and this tradition.”
Nowadays, many truffle-hunting families invite visitors to take part in this tradition — although perhaps not showing them their most secret hiding spots.
“We run this experience at my uncle Adamo’s farmhouse,” Mr. Cardelli says of Experience BellaVita’s tour. Walking through the chilly woods alongside the dogs, mostly on the family’s property, which includes a babbling river, guests can try their hand at finding the precious fungi.
“WE LET OUR GUESTS ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE HUNT,” MR. CARDELLI SAYS. “WE GIVE THEM SHOVELS AND DOG TREATS AND LET THEM UNCOVER THE TRUFFLES AND [REWARD] THE DOGS. “DURING THE HUNT THE DOGS CONCENTRATE, THEY PUT THEIR NOSE DOWN AND START SNIFFING — ACTUALLY, THEY HAVE FUN UNCOVERING THE TRUFFLES,” HE SAYS. “THEY ALWAYS GET A TREAT AFTER A FIND AND FOR THEM THIS IS A GAME THAT THEY LOVE. WHEN IT IS TIME TO HUNT, THEY GET SO EXCITED.”
Of course, the most important part of finding truffles is eating them — always a moment of celebration in Italy, with festivals and special dishes popping up throughout the season. “I am a very strong consumer of truffles when the correct season arrives,” Ms. Viganò shares.
In true Italian fashion, most traditional trufflehighlighting dishes keep it simple, shaving them over fresh pasta, risotto, eggs, cheese and tartare. There are also some newer inventions, such as a squid ink-fried olive filled with meat and truffle, and a cheesy dessert topped with hazelnut and truffle — both introduced at the local festival Mr. Cardelli helps run in the town of Campovalano.
After their truffle-hunting experience, Mr. Cardelli’s guests get to clean what they’ve found and dig in. “Depending on the seasonality and the harvest from our vegetable garden, we share vegetables, cheeses, eggs, fresh pasta and also dessert — all topped with the delicious, fresh truffle and paired … with a selection of natural wines from the Abruzzo region,” he says. “It’s all about sharing and immersing in the truffle hunt while taking part in a typical Italian family setting.”
Being welcomed into the tartufao family is truly a tasty treat.
Pearls have long captured our imagination. This precious gemstone can be traced back to ancient civilizations and holds cultural and historical significance. While fashion trends have come and gone, the allure of pearls has endured. Coco Chanel once famously said that “a woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls.” The humble pearl, once the symbol of aristocracy, has become the epitome of quiet luxury, reflecting today’s focus on minimalistic elegance.
THE TIMELESS APPEAL OF PEARLS
Grace Kelly summed it up best when she said, “The pearl is the queen of gems and the gem of queens.” While we’re used to seeing European royals decked out in pearls, the gem’s aristocratic associations can be traced back to ancient Rome. However, there are many myths about pearls, including those that originate from ancient China, where the gemstone was believed to be a protective talisman against evil spirits.
The natural beauty and rarity of pearls have led to our centuries-long love affair with them. Over the generations, pearls have come to represent purity, fertility, love, and wisdom.
Modern pearls emerged as a trend in the 1950s and 1960s, spearheaded by vintage style icons who have come to symbolize our ideas of elegance and sophistication. Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, and Coco Chanel were rarely photographed without wearing pearls, making them the ultimate symbol of femininity and elegance.
Pearls have stood the test of time and stand out against their diamond counterpart as gemstones you can wear every day. It’s rare to see a red carpet or fashion show without pearls, whether in dainty earrings or an extravagant ornate brooch.
NATURAL VS. CULTURED PEARLS
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but pearls are the friend you can always rely on. Just like natural color diamonds, every natural and cultured pearl is unique.
Pearl jewelry became a breakout trend in 2024. Baroque pearls have been a standout trend, with Vivienne Westwood’s iconic pearl choker becoming the must-have accessory for the summer of 2024.
We’re seeing pearls pop up in every segment of fashion, from cocktail dresses to unisex necklaces and hair accessories; but why do fashion trendsetters inevitably fall for the allure of pearls? Let’s find out.
Natural pearls are the most valuable as they’re grown without human intervention. Any of the natural pearls you’ll find on the market today are antique — and come with an eyewatering price tag. Most pearls in the fashion industry today are cultured on pearl farms. While both freshwater and saltwater pearls can be naturally sourced, you’re more likely to encounter a cultured pearl.
Freshwater pearls are smaller and come from ponds, lakes, and rivers. These less expensive pearls are commonly used in everyday and costume jewelry in a variety of colors, including white, pink, purple, and cream.
If you want a luxury look on a budget, freshwater pearls are the perfect option. Baroque freshwater pearls are a contemporary trend with a vintage feel and can cost as little as $30 from mainstream fashion brands.
Saltwater pearls have a greater luster than their freshwater counterparts, come in an array of colors and shapes, and are durable enough to wear in the shower. Most saltwater pearls are cultivated on pearl farms in Australia, China, and Japan. Tahitian pearls are considered the rarest type of saltwater pearls as they’re sourced from black-lipped oysters in French Polynesia. The most common type of saltwater pearls is the Akoya pearl, with its pink and silver overtones.
NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S PEARLS
When we mention pearls, you likely picture the doublestranded pearl necklace that your grandmother wore or an antique piece you might see in a museum. Today’s resurgence of pearl jewelry is anything but your grandmother’s pearls. The quiet luxury trend emerged in 2023 and brought pearls back into the mainstream as the epitome of understated luxury.
Celebrities like Harry Styles, Gigi Hadid, and Dua Lipa are changing how we approach pearls. Designers and brands are going beyond the classic look of pearls, opting for bolder and more innovative silhouettes that have made a new generation of fashion followers fall for the allure of pearls. While shows like Bridgerton have helped bring pearls to the forefront of fashion discourse, current jewelry trends are making pearls more accessible and unisex.

Whether you count Audrey Hepburn or the Duchess of Sussex among your style muses, today’s pearl jewelry trends are all about adding a touch of timeless elegance to your look.
HOW PEARL HARVESTING IS EVOLVING
Pearls aren’t without controversy — especially as the fashion and jewelry industries seek to meet growing consumer demand for more eco-conscious practices. Pearl harvesting has been linked to habitat disruption, water quality degradation, and coral reef damage, and there are ethical and environmental concerns about overfarming oysters. Today’s pearl harvesting techniques are changing due to growing environmental regulations that aim to reduce pollution and minimize the impact on marine ecosystems.
Changes to pearl harvesting reflect the growing push across the industry for more sustainable practices. Research shows younger generations are more likely to pay a premium and shop around for ethical products, so it’s no surprise that pearl harvesting techniques are changing to attract these younger generations.
Pearl farming is also evolving due to the impact of climate change, focusing on improving water quality and researching disease resistance to curate a healthier pearl oyster population. Many pearl farmers are incorporating more ecoconscious practices into their businesses, including adopting responsible harvesting methods and investing in habitat restoration.
A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION: KAMOKA PEARL
Pearl farming is evolving, meeting the need to become more environmentally sustainable, with companies like Kamoka
Pearl leading the way. Founded in 1990, Kamoka Pearl is a family-run business at the forefront of eco-friendly pearl farming, even earning a feature in National Geographic in 2013, long before sustainability became the buzzword that it is today.
Kamoka Pearl uses what it describes as “the ocean’s version of organic farming” to cultivate traceable Tahitian pearls. The mother of pearl nuclei of the Tahitian pearls, which are natural by-products of the oysters, create high-quality A-grade pearls and prevent overexploitation of freshwater mussels.
The company uses ecologically responsible farming techniques that have been found to increase the local fish population. As a small company, Kamoka Pearl is showing the jewelry industry and consumers that pearls can be sustainably cultivated and have a positive impact on marine life.
MODERN PEARLS: TIMELESS ELEGANCE MEETS SUSTAINABILITY
While pearl trends are changing under the influence of the next generation, this precious gemstone continues to symbolize beauty and grace. Today’s pearls represent a crossroads between timeless elegance and sustainability, showing that traditional jewelry trends can experience a resurgence if they adapt to more eco-conscious practices.
