ANTIQUING WITH CAROLYN KENDALL

When she’s not working with her team designing sumptuous interiors for the Plateau’s most exclusive homes, interior designer Carolyn Kendall is combing Parisian flea markets for one-of-a-kind finds or lifting her paddle at auction houses.

As the creative powerhouse behind residential design firm Alcott Interiors, Kendall infuses her projects with a signature blend of elegance, sophistication, and timeless charm. Through her lens of meticulous attention to detail, color, character, and texture all align in harmony. The result is interiors that are grand yet utterly livable. Traditional yet modern.

Based in Nashville but always on the roam, Kendall’s globe-trotting adventures have rendered her an expert in sourcing unique treasures. Extensive travels across Europe have not only broadened Kendall’s horizons but served as a wellspring of inspiration for her design philosophy.

“TRAVELING TO PLACES LIKE FRANCE, ITALY, AND ENGLAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN SO INSPIRING TO ME,” SHE EXPLAINS. “I HAVE BEEN IMPORTING CONTAINERS OF HOME FURNISHINGS FOR MANY YEARS AND THERE IS SOMETHING SO EXCITING ABOUT FINDING A BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE THAT MAY HAVE LIVED IN AN ITALIAN VILLA SHOWING UP IN THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS TO ITS NEW HOME WITH ALL THE AGED PATINA AND CHARACTER FROM ITS LIFE OVER THE POND. THE DEPTH OF CHARACTER AN ANTIQUE PIECE BRINGS TO A ROOM IS VERY SPECIAL.”

Indeed, in the realm of interiors, Louis XIV’s writing desk or a Rococo armchair can make a statement unlike any other. Heritage pieces, steeped in history and craftsmanship, serve as more than just furnishings — they are gateways to another era, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the elegance and opulence of centuries past.

word S by ellen jone S

Kendall agrees. “The narrative woven into each vintage or antique piece we acquire often spans the history of its maker, previous owners, or the captivating tale of its discovery. One unforgettable journey in Parma led me to acquire a pair of secretaries from a dealer based in Florence. Later, I had the opportunity to trace their origins and witness the spaces they once adorned before embarking on their voyage to America. My favorite dealer managed to procure pieces from George Clooney’s Lake Como residence, bringing them to Nashville, where they found a new home and purpose.”

Incorporating antiques into interiors is a wellhoned skill that creates a layered space that transcends time. After all, the desired result is a chic abode rather than an austere museum. How does Kendall master the artful juxtaposition of integrating antiques in a way that remains current? “First and foremost, creating an eclectic mix in a house is what I love most,” she enthuses. “By mixing diverse types of antiques in a room, such as porcelain, artwork, furnishings, and lighting with new upholstery, I create looks that are fresh.”

“The starting point of a project is always the client and their hopes for the house. Sometimes, a family heirloom or a significant architectural feature will be the focal point. When a house is a new-build, we find the perfect thing to anchor the room, be it an antique tapestry or a modern painting juxtaposed in a period gilt frame.”

REWORKING HOW PIECES WERE ORIGINALLY PURPOSED IS ANOTHER WAY KENDALL PUTS A MODERN SPIN ON ANTIQUING. “I AM INTRIGUED WITH HOW ANTIQUE PIECES WERE ORIGINALLY USED AND I EMBRACE CHANGING THE USES FOR CONTEMPORARY NEEDS. FOR INSTANCE, AN ORIENTAL CARPET THAT WAS ORIGINALLY A WALL HANGING OR TABLE COVERING WE WILL USE AS A CARPET ON THE FLOOR.”

And as for those best-kept secrets. Where does she source her treasures? “I enjoy shopping at the markets and street fairs in Paris, Rome, and Milan. I often get out into the countryside to shop in smaller French villages and towns like Avignon, Beziers, and Montpellier, as well as Italian jaunts around Bologna. I often supplement my buying trips by purchasing from my favorite dealer

friends in the States when their containers arrive from other countries such as Spain and Belgium.”

Finding extraordinary antiques doesn’t always mean going to their country of origin. Kendall is a huge fan of auctions, from legendary houses to local auctioneers. “I love the classic auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s but also like ones closer to home such as Northgate Gallery or Clements in Tennessee.”

With the majority of today’s auction houses offering sales both in-person and online, which does she prefer? “When possible, I do prefer to be there in person to get a feel for the proportions, patina, and to check the condition thoroughly. That said, I recently bought a painting at auction painted by artist Constantin Kluge that hit me when I saw it and it did not disappoint when it arrived.”

“Online auctions are great as they offer access to antiques to a wider market who cannot get there in person or don’t want to sit through and bid.”

From craftsmanship to counterfeits, when it comes to quality and authenticity, Kendall explains these are the tell-tale hallmarks she always looks out for. “Details like dovetail or Knapp joints on drawers, and even hand-forged nails can help determine age. I also keep an eye out for multiple wood species. Often, finer woods like walnut and mahogany can be paired with pine or less expensive woods on drawer bottoms. The wood species can also indicate where something was made. Of course, signatures and maker’s marks will reveal a piece’s age and offer a way to research similarly sold items by the same artist or craftsmen for an idea of value.”

For those wanting to explore the world of antique collecting themselves, what does Kendall recommend when it comes to securing a good price? “When bringing items to the US, always inquire, ‘Is this your best price for export?’ Additionally, when purchasing multiple items from the same dealer, consider asking if there’s a potential cost break. Dealers often accommodate such requests.”

“When I buy antiques at markets and fairs, I tend to ask for pricing on many more things than I buy. Don’t feel bad about asking if you know you’ll be actually buying something. Also, once

you get to know certain dealers, you’ll know what their price range tends to be. Finding your desired aesthetic at a specific price point is part of the hunt and so exciting when you find just the right piece!”

Starting or enriching your own antique collection is a thrilling journey filled with discovery, history, and the joy of finding that perfect piece to add a splash of character to your home. Here, Carolyn Kendall reveals her top tips for antiquing like a pro collector.

CAROLYN KENDALL’S TOP ANTIQUING TIPS

NAIL YOUR AESTHETIC

Consider what provenance and styles will complement your home and existing furnishings. Don’t be afraid to mix antique pieces with different aesthetics into your space.

GET INSPIRED BY TRAVEL

Explore the world’s diverse cultures and design aesthetics through exciting trips to places like France, Italy, England, and Morocco. Traveling allows you to absorb the unique cultural influences, history, and design aesthetics of each location.

HUNT FOR TREASURES

Dive into the bustling markets, street fairs, and hidden gems of smaller villages and towns in Europe. Don’t forget to check out trusted dealers Stateside who import treasures from across the globe.

SEEK AUTHENTICITY

Trustworthy dealers and importers are your best allies in ensuring you’re bringing home genuine pieces with rich histories. By forging relationships with trusted sources, you gain invaluable guides offering their expertise and insight to help you navigate the world of antiquities.

PLAN AHEAD

When shopping in person, come prepared with measurements and photos of your living space. This ensures that the pieces you choose will seamlessly integrate into your home in terms of size and style.

NEGOTIATION TACTICS

Always inquire about the best price for export when bringing items to the US. When purchasing multiple items from the same dealer, ask if there’s a possibility of a cost break.

STRATEGIC PRICING

Request pricing on several items even if you don’t intend to buy them all. Get to know dealers’ price ranges and tailor your negotiation approach accordingly.

KNOW YOUR STUFF

Learn the difference between “antique” (100 years or older) and “vintage” (between 20 and 100 years) and train your eye to spot craftsmanship clues like joinery techniques and maker’s marks.

AUCTION ADVENTURES

Keep the thrill alive by checking out both inperson and online auctions for unique finds. If possible, nothing beats the excitement of inspecting items first-hand.

ENJOY THE HUNT

Enjoy the process of finding the perfect piece at the right price. The excitement of discovering treasures adds to the experience.

NAVIGATE IMPORTING

If your heart’s set on something overseas, be sure to navigate the ins and outs of shipping and customs, especially for those big-ticket items. A small purchase can often be FedExed, but arranging a container or partial container with a reputable importer is the right decision for larger, expensive items.

EMBRACE THE STORIES

Each piece has its own fascinating tale to tell, whether it’s about its maker, previous owners, or the adventure of how you found it.

THE SEVENTH BIENNIAL CASHIERS PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL

word S by

photography courte S y of the village green

Once again, lovers of art will flock to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau this summer, converging upon The Village Green to delight in the seventh biennial Cashiers Plein Air Festival.

From July 14 to 20, the gathering of painters and patrons provides an intimate glimpse into the artistic process, with abundant opportunities to mingle, shop, and celebrate fine art.

Open by invitation to 19 nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, the event features a number of ticketed and open events showcasing their work. In addition, spectators will discover the artists working at their easels at specially chosen locations throughout our famously scenic and spectacularly beautiful town.

In artistic tradition, “plein air” denotes the 19thcentury practice of painting outdoors, utilized by celebrated masters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissaro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Having evolved out of French Impressionism, plein air now represents a common method of artistic expression, particularly with regard to landscapes and subjects posed within outdoor scenes. The technique requires a delicate balance of skillful use of materials and vigilant awareness of one’s surroundings while allowing the painter to harness natural light, color, and movement to achieve a vivid and accurate portrayal of the subject. The process itself can be quite a sight to behold!

Benefactors will enjoy an exclusive sneak peek at the unveiling of these works when they attend the Benefactor Preview Party on July 17. These esteemed patrons of the arts also earn special 9 AM access to the gallery at The Village Green’s Lewis Hall from July 18 through 20, an hour before the facility opens to the public each day. With admission free to all, the gallery presents a tempting opportunity to take home an original plein air painting created here on The Plateau.

From July 17 through 19, three participating artists will present live demonstrations of their techniques and unique viewpoints on art. The ticketed events provide a rare opportunity to gain personal insight into the mind of an artist, adding

to one’s appreciation of plein-air painting and the creative process overall.

The week concludes on the evening of July 20, when attendees and artists mingle to enjoy live jazz music, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and intricately crafted desserts at the Artist Award Gala. Participating artists who generously donate their time to the festival will be appropriately lauded for their talents and dedicated work in numerous categories, such as People’s Choice and Artist’s Choice awards. The summer soirée promises to be a night to remember as benefactors and artists share their mutual love of culture and creation on The Plateau.

Known as “The Heart of Cashiers,” The Village Green is a nonprofit organization that relies entirely upon private donations to maintain the property and its operations. Proceeds from Benefactor Packages, along with the sales of event tickets and artwork, support the group’s efforts, which greatly benefit the Village of Cashiers, its residents, and visitors.

A TALE OF TWO LAKES

IN A LAND OF LUSH FORESTS, PRISTINE WATERWAYS, AND RUSHING WATERFALLS, RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ON THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU SUFFER NO SHORTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES TO ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS. THE AREA’S TWO LARGEST LAKES, LAKE GLENVILLE AND LAKE TOXAWAY, PROVIDE AN IDYLLIC SETTING FOR HOME SITES AND AN ABUNDANCE OF JOYFUL RECREATION ON THE WATER.

LAKE GLENVILLE

During the Second World War, the country’s requirements for electricity increased as factories ramped up production to support military efforts. In 1941, Nantahala Power and Light built a hydroelectric dam at Onion Falls, on the west fork of the Tuckasegee River, to power the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). Flooding the valley created the 1,470-acre Lake Glenville. After the war ended, ALCOA sold the lake to their subsidiary Nantahala Power in 1951, and from that point onward, the lake was referred to as Thorpe Reservoir after the electric company’s first president. Subsequent to the formation of the Friends of Lake Glenville, a nonprofit organization serving as stewards of the lake, the name reverted back to Lake Glenville in 2002.

word S by emily davi S photography by courtney S nyder
LAKE GLENVILLE AND LAKE TOXAWAY

Before the reservoir’s creation, the settlements of Hamburg and Glenville inhabited the valley north of Cashiers, which now forms the bed of Lake Glenville. The valley was populated with homes, churches, a post office, and even an inn that attracted tourists from far and wide.

Local myth says that the settlements are still down there, sleeping beneath the water, and tales abound of scuba divers swimming around the old post office. But that’s not entirely true; the original foundations of locust posts and rock remain, but the actual structures were demolished before the lake’s creation.

Old photographs of the dam’s construction depict oxen pulling down trees to clear the valley floor. The graves of the local cemetery were relocated to a hill above the water’s edge and are visible today as you drive north on Highway 107 toward Sylva. Highway 107 replaces the old road that ran from Walhalla, South Carolina, to Sylva. That road now lies at the bottom of the lake, as does part of Toby Bryson Road, which once connected Glenville to the Norton community and Highlands.

The dam’s history contributed to present-day regulations that sometimes befuddle property owners. A few families held out, refusing to sell their homes and land to ALCOA, and those properties ended up in court. As a result, the attorney negotiated a settlement in which some waterfront landowners were not subject to a setback rule. Today, many properties around Lake Glenville are subject to a 50-foot setback from the water, while others are not.

Now owned by Duke Energy, the public-access lake includes a boat launch and a popular beach area off Pine Creek Road and provides a much-loved recreational destination for residents and visitors. In addition, numerous private communities, such as Trillium Links and Lake Club and Stone Pointe, have made their homes on its shores.

Lake Glenville hosts watercraft of all types, including gas-powered and electric boats, as well as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. The Friends of Lake Glenville, a local non-profit organization, publishes pamphlets on boater safety to help ensure the public’s continuing enjoyment of the lake. The group also puts on one of the area’s most popular Independence Day fireworks displays each July.

To manage the seven inflows into the lake, Friends of Lake Glenville dedicates the majority of its efforts to water quality. With a stated mission of preserving and protecting the lake’s natural beauty and integrity, they test water quality three to four times yearly, conduct cleanup initiatives, organize fish restocking programs, and have created a document outlining a long-term vision for watershed management.

As a result of these efforts, Lake Glenville is one of the cleanest lakes in Western North Carolina.

With 26 miles of shoreline and widely known as the highest-elevation major lake east of the Mississippi River (at 3,494 feet above sea level), Lake Glenville serves as a picturesque backdrop for the homes and communities that dot the water’s edge.

LAKE TOXAWAY

Ten miles to the east lies another of the area’s outstanding natural resources. A hidden gem in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Lake Toxaway offers homeowners an adventurous outdoor lifestyle with access to the largest private lake in the state.

First formed in 1903, Lake Toxaway was conceived by The Toxaway Company as the largest manmade lake in North Carolina at that time. Back then, this region of Western North Carolina had gained recognition as “The Switzerland of America,” a vacation destination popular among wealthy tourists. The developers established the five-story Toxaway Inn overlooking the lake, and homeowners began constructing vacation homes on the shoreline. The Transylvania Railroad delivered passengers straight to the Lake Toxaway depot, where they vacationed in style at the Inn or continued their travels to Highlands and other nearby destinations by motorcoach.

Circa 1915, Mr. and Mrs. George Armstrong of Savannah, Georgia, established their magnificent Hillmont House on Lake Toxaway. The home, designated on The National Register of Historic Places, was transformed into The Greystone Inn in 1985 and receives guests to this day. The 30room inn provides luxurious accommodations to its guests, with an all-inclusive spa, a lakeside restaurant, and catering services for special events.

Guests come from far and wide to experience the magic of The Greystone, but the historic mainstay remains a local favorite among those who enjoy “staycations” on the lake. The Inn is also open to the public so that visitors can explore all that Toxaway has to offer, including hiking trails, waterfalls, and a quaint mountain town.

Although Toxaway’s dam was destroyed by a devastating flood in 1916, the Armstrongs

and many other second-home owners persisted in their enjoyment of the area even through the trials of the Great Depression. Finally, in 1961, the Lake Toxaway Company purchased the dry lake bed, rebuilt the dam, and recreated the beloved destination.

The 640-acre private reservoir is home to Lake Toxaway Estates and its numerous subcommunities, with the Lake Toxaway Community Association anchoring conservation and safety programs. Members in good standing access the lake for boating, skiing, tubing, paddleboarding, fishing, and swimming. The nearby Cardinal Lake, a 65-acre private lake just upstream, provides another source of recreation with boats restricted to electric-only motors.

The enduring legacy of Lake Toxaway has contributed to its reputation as a welcoming, upscale respite from city life throughout the Southeast. After falling in love with the serenity of Lake Toxaway, visitors often decide to relocate to the community as second-home owners or even full-time residents.

BOATING ON THE PLATEAU: GAS VS ELECTRIC

Boating has evolved over the years into a popular recreational diversion. As with all human innovation, watercraft designers continually develop their products to match consumer expectations and preferences.

With more public awareness around the environmental impact of emissions from gaspowered engines, many boaters have begun to consider electric-powered options. In addition, the large wakes produced by more powerful watercraft can contribute to shoreline erosion. For this reason, as well as the issues of noise pollution and boater safety, many smaller lakes — Mirror Lake, Lake Fairfield, Cardinal Lake, and Lake Osseroga come to mind — do not permit gas-powered boats within their waters.

Situated on Lake Glenville, Signal Ridge Marina specializes in gas-powered boats by Bennington, which creates luxury pontoon vessels, models

used for fishing, and recreational boats. Signal Ridge Sales Manager Brandon Luethye explains the primary differences between gas- and electric-powered watercraft.

“Electric boats are just beginning to gain widespread attention. They tend to be slower, designed for cruising rather than the more intense and popular activities like skiing and wakeboarding, and are still limited to 22 feet in size. Gas-powered vessels are capable of higher speeds and are typically better suited to the more exciting watersports.”

Beyond environmental concerns, practical issues can impact the boat buyer’s final selection. “With electric boats, you have to charge for 8 to 12 hours. So, when you’re done, you’re done! But with gas-powered boats, you can gas up and continue enjoying your day,” shares Luethye.

Bob Bean at Singleton Marine in Salem, South Carolina, says their pontoon and sport boat sales revolve exclusively around gas-powered crafts from well-known makers such as Cobalt and Regal. He expands on the limiting factor of electric power for larger watercraft. “You have to remember that boats don’t have brakes. Most people have two speeds; you’re either idling or wide open. In the ways that most people use sport boats, the battery life of an electric boat just isn’t sufficient.”

For those worried about emissions, Bean offers reassurance. “Remember that cars are still the main producers of emissions. The average boater might put 30 or 40 hours on their boat each year. That’s equal to just a few days of driving a car.”

However, he says, “We do carry an electric surfboard by Radinn that’s selling like hotcakes! Picture a paddleboard that goes 30 miles per hour.” After charging for three hours, electric surfboard users can expect about 40 minutes of run time at maximum speed.

“Battery drain is the main reason you don’t see many larger electric boats just yet,” Bean explains. “For people who enjoy water sports and want to spend a day on the lake, it just wouldn’t be convenient. But for those who want to cruise around and sightsee, Torqeedo does make an electric pontoon boat that many find enjoyable.”

For thrill-seekers with an environmental conscience, hope is on the horizon. Luethye has good news: “Some electric boat models that can handle higher speeds are currently in the testing phase. So those could be coming along and hitting the mainstream soon!”

For most boaters, the choice between gas and electric depends upon how they plan to use their crafts, as well as local regulations. Gas-powered engines remain the standard for many, but with more electric options becoming available, the future of boating looks exciting — and possibly “greener” than ever.

A Culinary Renaissance

LA CHAÎNE DES RÔTISSEURS RETURNS TO ASHEVILLE

With its secret society-worthy regalia and initiation ceremonies, La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is an organization steeped in tradition and ritual.

Originating in France in 1248 as a guild of goose roasters, it has evolved into a global network of epicureans, chefs, and enthusiasts who share a passion for gastronomy.

But La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is more than just a platform for gastronomic indulgence; it is a custodian of culinary heritage. Through its culinary competitions, educational programs, cultural exchanges, and intimate dinners, La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs’ 21,000 international members strive to preserve and promote the rich diversity of global cuisine.

In Asheville, a culinary renaissance is underway. After a period of dormancy, its La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs chapter, the Bailliage de Asheville, is back with a bang. With new leadership and future culinary events in the pipeline, Asheville’s dining scene has never looked more exciting.

LA CHAÎNE DES RÔTISSEURS: THEN AND NOW

La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs traces its origins back to the medieval courts of Europe, where noble roasters banded together in a sacred brotherhood to celebrate the art of spit-roasting meats. Clad in regal attire and wielding ceremonial swords, these roasting knights embarked on epic culinary quests, dazzling palates and igniting passions wherever they roamed.

Fast forward to the present day, and La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs has evolved into a global gastronomic society, uniting gourmands and bon vivants from Kenya to Korea and every corner of the planet.

What sets La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs apart from your run-of-the-mill dining club? For starters, it’s not just about the food — it’s about the experience From elaborate induction ceremonies to opulent gala dinners in the best restaurants in town, every event is an extravagant affair, meticulously curated to tantalize the senses and transport diners to gastronomic nirvana.

Events and gatherings worldwide are as diverse as the cuisines they showcase. Later this year, the Grand Chapter of France will enjoy a fourday gourmet experience in glittering Versailles to celebrate the 370th anniversary of King Louis XIV’s coronation and the 360th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the Palace of Versailles.

Dubai is hosting an exquisite gathering in Madinat Jumeirah’s Mina A’Salam ballroom in view of the iconic Burj Al Arab. In Lisbon, Portugal, the 2024 International Young Sommeliers Competition takes place, while a glamorous gala dinner aboard the grand SS Victoria is happening in Amsterdam.

THE MOST EXCLUSIVE CULINARY CLUB

Getting accepted into La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is like accessing the VIP golden gates of the most elite gastronomic club. Members are ultra-select folk belonging to the culinary community. Think:

top chefs, world-class sommeliers, food critics, and restaurateurs. As Niles Crane would say, “It’s like a who’s who of the crème de la crème of the upper crust.”

Fortunately for mere mortals, membership is not just limited to professionals. Anyone can join La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, provided they demonstrate an absolute passion and palate for fine gastronomy. All prospective members must be sponsored by an existing member.

Once inducted, a hierarchy of ribbon-wearing members adds to its exclusivity and mystique. At the top sits the Bailli, the chapter president, responsible for overseeing the chapter’s activities and upholding the organization’s traditions. Next are the Dames and Damoiseaux, who support the

Bailli in maintaining the chapter’s standards and values. The newest members are Chevaliers, who contribute their passion for food and wine to the chapter’s events.

ASHEVILLE LA CHAÎNE DES RÔTISSEURS: A NEW DAWN

Spearheaded by a dedicated group of culinary enthusiasts, the La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, Bailliage de Asheville, was resurrected in March after a prolonged hiatus.

At the smart setting of Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Biltmore Village, anticipation hung thick in the air as members, guests, and aspiring gastronomes gathered to commemorate the resurgence.

What began as a simple gathering quickly evolved into a celebration of culinary passion and the bonds forged over shared experiences. On arrival, attendees were greeted with glasses of chilled Domaine Joillot NV Crémant de Bourgogne Cuvée Agnés, setting the tone for an evening of indulgence and conviviality. Against the backdrop of laughter and animated conversations, old friendships were rekindled, and new connections forged,

all united by a shared love for exceptional cuisine and fine wines.

The evening was about welcoming new members into the fold, and with some careful dubbing of the ceremonial sword by new Bailli, Gloria Pignatiello, Larisa Locke was inducted as Dame de la Chaîne, Eva-Michelle Spicer as Dame de la Chaîne, Kenneth Pace as Chevalier, and Steve Pignatiello reinstated as Chevalier.

WHAT DOES THE ASHEVILLE CHAPTER’S RESURRECTION MEAN FOR THE LOCAL FOODIE SCENE? “THE RELAUNCH OF THE CHAÎNE DES RÔTISSEURS IN ASHEVILLE EMBODIES OUR COMMITMENT TO CREATING A VIBRANT CULINARY COMMUNITY,” EXPLAINS BAILLI, GLORIA PIGNATIELLO. “WE LOOK FORWARD TO BRINGING FOOD LOVERS TOGETHER IN A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE, CELEBRATING THE CULTURE OF THE TABLE, AND PROMOTING THE CULINARY EXPERTISE OF LOCAL CHEFS.”

JOIN THE BAILLIAGE DE ASHEVILLE FOLD

If you’re a seasoned home chef, budding wine connoisseur, or gourmand who appreciates the finer things in life, Bailliage de Asheville offers a unique opportunity to indulge your love for gastronomy.

Pignatiello explains that they actively encourage new members. “We welcome food and wine enthusiasts of all kinds, whether they’re industry professionals or simply passionate aficionados.”

“Interested individuals can reach out to any Chaîne des Rôtisseurs member to express their interest, and hopefully, they will receive an invitation to join our community dedicated to culinary excellence.”

And what does Bailliage de Asheville’s culinary calendar have in store? It is back hosting fine dining events throughout the year, and the next one — a wine dinner — will take place on July 16 at Asheville’s Rhubarb restaurant.

Beyond showcasing your passion for gastronomy, joining Chaîne des Rôtisseurs opens the door to participating in national and international events. As a member, you’ll benefit from over 30 wine partnerships with wine discounts and programs, annual magazine subscriptions, and travel and luxury goods discounts.

Could the Bailliage de Asheville be your passport to culinary adventures and epicurean escapades? Absolutely. Let’s raise our glasses, indulge in the finest cuisine, and toast a future filled with gastronomic delights.

AND GRAPES GRANDEUR

Looking like an opulent chateau that’s been airdropped from Burgundy, Biltmore is an estate whose architectural splendor defies belief. As America’s largest home, built by George Washington Vanderbilt starting in the late 1880s, this Gilded Age estate sprawls across a mighty 8000 acres in Asheville’s stunning Blue Ridge Mountains.

Of course, no self-respecting French-inspired mansion comes without its own winery. In honor of his grandfather’s penchant for wine collecting, it was in the 1970s that George’s grandson, William Cecil, planted the first French-American hybrid vines , which were later moved and replaced with vinifera grapes, that produce wines that win armfuls of glittering awards year after year.

CRAFTING A VINEYARD WONDERLAND

Picture this: rolling hills, Frederick Law Olmsteddesigned gardens, and a mansion out of a fairytale. Winery settings don’t get more

picturesque than Biltmore Estate. After bottling its first wines — Château Biltmore

Merlot and Château Biltmore Cabernet Sauvignon — in 1984, the winery opened its doors to the public a year later.

In what’s a testament to American viticulture, Biltmore’s winemaking journey carries a commitment to crafting exceptional wines that reflect the unique

terroir of North Carolina. Sitting at a lofty 2,500 feet of elevation in the Blue Ridge Mountains, rowupon-row of vines trail down the slopes in carpets of green.

BUT IT WASN’T SO EASY. CECIL INITIALLY SOUGHT ADVICE FROM WINE EXPERTS WHO DISMISSED THE POTENTIAL OF VINIFERA CULTIVATION IN THE AREA. AFTER ROPING IN SIXTH-GENERATION FRENCH WINEMASTER PHILIPPE JOURDAIN, THE REST WAS HISTORY. BILTMORE HAS SINCE TESTED AND SUCCESSFULLY GROWN NUMEROUS VARIETALS. FROM RICH CABERNET FRANC AND CABERNET SAUVIGNON TO CRISP CHARDONNAY AND BRIGHT MERLOT, ALL THESE CLASSIC FRENCH GRAPES HAVE PROVEN THEMSELVES MORE THAN WELLSUITED FOR AMERICAN BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN TERROIR.

The latest addition to Biltmore’s portfolio is its exquisite 2024 Masterpiece Collection. Perfect for summer lunches, it features a light-to-mediumbodied white that entices with notes of white peach and clementine, and a crisp rosé that delights the palate with hints of strawberry and rock candy.

The Masterpiece Collection celebrates George Vanderbilt’s legacy as a connoisseur of remarkable treasures and exquisite wines. Each bottle is labeled with stunning hand-painted orchids by North Carolina artist Bryan Koontz, who took inspiration from the vibrant blooms found in the Conservatory’s Orchid Room.

SEE, SIP, SAVOR.

The best way to experience Biltmore’s extraordinary wines is at a tasting session.

Regular daytime admission to the estate includes a complimentary tipple in the winery’s Tasting Room, which is in Antler Hill Village, about a 15-minute drive from the main house.

Plot up at the smart bar, surrounded by towering cases of bottles, and listen to the story of Biltmore’s winemaking process as your wine host pours you an awardwinning vintage.

While you’re at Antler Hill Village, it’s worth exploring the estate’s agricultural heritage further. Whether taking in blacksmith and woodworking demonstrations, bottlefeeding baby lambs, or buying heirloom seeds at A Gardener’s Place, you’ll discover a newfound appreciation for the timeless rhythms of rural life.

BEYOND THE VINES

The Biltmore Estate itself is an architectural marvel of extraordinary historical significance. A day pass takes you on a journey through Gilded Age extravagance, from the Vanderbilt family’s lavish home to the painstakingly manicured gardens.

Witness the wonder of the French Renaissance mansion via self-paced audio or a guided tour. Once you pass through the towering entrance hall, a majestic staircase beckons you to ascend into a realm of luxury.

Enter the Banquet Hall, adorned with intricate woodwork and a magnificent triple fireplace that once warmed the hearts of esteemed guests. Marvel at the opulent Tapestry Gallery, where priceless pieces like the 16th-century Triumph of

Faith adorn the walls. Admire 23,000 of George Vanderbilt’s volumes, including rare first editions and manuscripts as you wander through the Library.

Biltmore Estates’s grounds are a thing of rare beauty and could rival the Palace of Versailles. Aligning formal, ornamental gardens and wilder, natural ones, together, Olmsted and George Vanderbilt created a habitat that seamlessly blends human artistry with nature’s grandeur.

Immediately outside the property, you’re greeted by the Italian Garden; a symphony of color and formality. Lush greenery frames intricate sculptures, while vibrant flowers dance in the sunlight, creating a scene straight out of a Renaissance painting. Venture further to the Walled Garden, a sanctuary of tranquility and charm. Here, rows of vibrant plants lead the way to a stunning conservatory, where exotic blooms thrive in a climatecontrolled paradise.

As you wander through Biltmore’s halls, gardens, and vineyards, you’re not just experiencing history; you’re savoring the essence of a bygone era, where opulence and taste intertwine to create an adventure through time and terroir.

Complimentary wine tastings at the Biltmore Winery are included with a daytime ticket, a Biltmore Annual Pass, or a stay at one of the estate’s properties. Open daily 12 — 7 PM. Visit biltmore.com to learn more.

A Heart for Homes

Rachel Wavra brings the perfect blend of hospitality, heart, and hustle to Silver Creek Real Estate Group. She developed her unerring eye for detail and total commitment to client satisfaction over a long career in the culinary and hospitality industries. After attending Samford University in Birmingham, AL, and culinary school in Charlotte, NC, Rachel cooked professionally, honing her craft in some of the Southeast’s finest restaurants. Perfection was expected of Rachel, every minute of every day, when she went to work under James Beard Award-winning chef Linton Hopkins at his famous Restaurant Eugene. And Rachel never failed to deliver.

RACHEL WAVRA
word S by robert mceveety | photography by courtney S nyder

In 2012, she moved from the cook line to restaurant operations, bringing her natural knack for negotiation and an uncanny ability to predict trends to the Florida-based chain BurgerFi. During her eight years there, she helped to grow the business from a nine-restaurant operation into the 125-location phenomenon it is today.

But it was moving to the Plateau — where this Florida girl and her family had spent so many summers during her youth — that provided Rachel with the push she needed to start her own business.

As a real estate agent, Rachel brings all the skills she honed in her earlier career to Silver Creek, along with her entire heart and soul. She genuinely wants the best for her clients: for them to find their forever homes, their perfect match. If Chef Linton Hopkins demanded perfection, Rachel now insists on it. Tireless, engaging, and a natural entertainer, Rachel’s journey with Silver Creek might just be getting started, but she undoubtedly has a long and profitable road ahead.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT LED YOU TO WORK IN REAL ESTATE.

I grew up in Winter Park, Florida, but my family has been coming to the Plateau for several decades. My husband, Tyler, and I met and fell in love here. These mountains have always been a constant for me and they’re my favorite place on Earth.

My background is in hospitality and I’ve been doing that most of my life. I started to consider a career in real estate after we moved to Scaly Mountain in 2017. I was working at the Vineyard, tasked with taking it from a hobby to a thriving business and I did just that. I loved the challenge and having the autonomy to make it successful. In 2022, the owners decided to pursue other passions, and the Vineyard changed hands. I knew that my position would be ending and after some soul-searching, decided to leap into real estate.

I always knew I could be successful in the industry. I’m a hustler. I’ve always hustled for other people’s businesses and I was excited to have the opportunity to hustle for my own business. I’ve worked hard since I started in this industry, and I won’t ever stop doing that.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP?

As real estate agents, our core job is marketing and storytelling. Without question, the team at Silver Creek is the best at both. Our brokers are friendly, community-driven, highly organized, and detail-oriented. That is me to a T.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT SELLING REAL ESTATE, HOW DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING YOUR TIME?

Tyler and I have two rambunctious children, Jackson (6) and Olivia (3). They keep us very busy! As a family we love to enjoy all that the mountains have to offer — fishing, hiking, swimming, and just being outdoors! Thanks to my kids, I can tell you the best place to find salamanders and the location of every playground on the Plateau. When we’re not out and about, I love tending to our vegetable garden and entertaining family and friends on our front porch.

I am also an active member of the Highlands Rotary Club, the Co-President of the Scaly Mountain Women’s Club, the Elementary Rep for

the Highlands School PTO, and a participant in the 2024 Leadership Highlands class.

You know what they say, “If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON ON THE PLATEAU?

I truly love each season for what it brings. After a gray, cold winter, I am always so excited to watch the Plateau come back to life in spring. Summer is sunny and beautiful and oh-so-busy! Fall brings a sense of community with school starting, pumpkin patches opening, and Thanksgiving bringing family to your table. Winter forces you to slow down and hibernate a bit, which is welldeserved after months of constant activity. And then, spring returns, just in time, when you are rested and ready to jump back in.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FESTIVAL OR SPECIAL EVENT THAT TAKES PLACE ON THE PLATEAU?

Our area has so many wonderful festivals and events, but one of my favorites is Bear Shadow,

a springtime weekend music festival in Scaly Mountain. It brings so many celebrated musicians to The Highlands Plateau, along with food trucks, drinks, and lots of good people. And it’s familyfriendly as well!

OUTSIDE OF THE PLATEAU, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL?

I love to travel internationally, and in October we’re headed to France for my sister Katy’s wedding. We also love spending time in the southeast. Our family heads to the beach every summer in Fripp Island, SC. And in March, my husband and I took a trip to New Orleans and had an absolute blast! We ate lots of great food and heard some fabulous live music.

WHAT GOALS ARE YOU WORKING TOWARD IN 2024?

I want 2024 to be a year of growth for my business. In our ever-evolving industry, you have to look for ways to keep ahead of the trends while still staying agile and client-focused. I’m working hard to refine the processes that help my clients the

most, while constantly re-evaluating my business plan with a steady eye towards the future.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING THEIR SEARCH FOR A HOME ON THE PLATEAU?

First, find an agent that you really like. The home-buying process can be a long one and if you’re going to be spending hours in a car with someone, you want to make sure it’s someone who’s interested in you and your needs.

Second, the Plateau has so much to offer, but to find the best home you need to be very specific with your agent about what’s important to you. Club activities? Peace and quiet? Proximity to certain things? Good real estate agents are good matchmakers, but we need to know exactly what’s important to you in order to find you the best match.

And finally, be patient, but be ready to act fast.

WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AS A BROKER?

My job as a broker is to find clients the perfect property based on their needs. At first, it was difficult for me to remove my own opinion from the conversation. As your trusted real estate advisor, my expertise is important, but I am not the one buying the home. This property is for you . It may seem silly, but it’s something I have to remind myself of. Different people have different priorities. My job is to find out what those priorities are for each person I help. It’s like a choose-yourown-adventure novel — I can help guide you through the story, but ultimately, you determine the ending.

CAN YOU NAME A MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER THAT STANDS OUT AS SOMETHING YOU’RE ESPECIALLY PROUD OF?

Taking the leap into real estate. It was difficult to walk away from a salaried job and go into business for myself. There were moments in that

first year when I questioned whether or not I’d made the right choice. But I stuck with it. I trusted my instincts, knowing that with hard work and honest dedication to my clients’ needs, I could build a great business. And I have.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE AREA’S GREATEST RESOURCE?

The people! Our community is truly amazing. It is filled with warm and generous people who love where they are and want to take part in all that this wonderful place has to offer. I am always so thankful to be able to call the Plateau my home, and to share it with all those who do the same.

RAYTRINE.NCLIVING.COM

Ray Trine’s passion for all things real estate blossomed early in his life. After graduating with an accounting degree from the University of North Florida in 1971, he immediately launched his real estate career. Initially employed by Florida National Bank’s holding company, he later became CFO of American Federal Savings and Loan, financing homes and commercial properties and working on building and development projects. He quickly learned that he belonged out in the field making things happen, rather than crunching numbers in an office.

By 1982, the Trine family included five children, five dogs, and four cats. His quest for a better quality of life brought him to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, where he immediately recognized what an idyllic existence it would provide. He packed up his entire menagerie and moved from an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, FL, to his newly acquired farm in Glenville, NC. His family continued to grow, expanding to include llamas, donkeys, cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. Now with seven children and thirteen grandchildren, he knows he made the right choice!

Once ensconced in the mountains, Ray wasted no time earning his North Carolina Broker’s license. He went to work for one of the oldest real estate firms in the area, V.C. Smith Real Estate, which he bought outright two years later. He soon

made his mark as the #1 real estate office in sales and listings in the Cashiers area for many years running. Ray proceeded to shape the area with his active involvement in the sale of land tracts, as well as the development of many residential communities such as Bald Rock, Summer Hill, Glenshore, Trillium Links & Lake Club, Bear Lake Reserve, Bridge Creek, Glen Laurel, and Glen Pointe.

With such a large family, community involvement was also important to Ray. He has been president of the Blue Ridge School PTA, elected to the Jackson County School Board, and served on the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Lake Glenville and many private community boards and architectural review committees.

Coupled with his dedicated community involvement, Ray’s background in accounting, property development, and real estate sales has provided him with priceless insights into this unique area. Ray is the quintessential guide to the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, offering personal experience, countless and fascinating local narratives, and seemingly limitless knowledge of mountain living. Ray is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina. Ray is a seasoned professional who brings enthusiasm, vision, and over 45 years of experience to the team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group.

theBeyondRoad

For those who live in Western North Carolina, nothing says “summer” quite like a leisurely drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. With sweeping vistas at high elevations and entertaining stops along the way, the adventure presents a classic road trip for the whole family.

Venturing onto the Parkway, travelers often find themselves surprised at the remoteness of the terrain. Exiting Highway 74 just west of Waynesville, at the Balsam Gap entrance, the modern world falls away. You will traverse a serene, winding road with nothing but the verdant forest around you as the road quickly climbs to an impressive elevation.

Richland Balsam Overlook at milepost 431 makes an awe-inspiring first stop. At a staggering 6,053 feet above sea level, this point in eastern Jackson County marks the highest elevation on the Blue Ridge Parkway. From here, you can see for miles on a clear day, and the air often feels crisp, even in the summer.

From several points along the Parkway, travelers can view Looking Glass Rock standing guard over the surrounding forest. The sheer, bald volcanic rock face shines like glass in wet weather conditions, creating stunning long-range photo opportunities. Looking Glass Rock Overlook at milepost 417 allows for an unobstructed view of this classic Parkway landmark.

It’s not all views and landmarks, however. The remoteness of the Parkway’s terrain invites surprise appearances by rafters of wild turkeys, families of deer, and, in some locations, gangs of wild elk. Watch for large animals as you traverse the winding road; it’s not uncommon for mother bears to cross with their cubs. Remain in your vehicle and enjoy nature’s best reason for a traffic jam.

Eagle-eyed nature lovers have reported sightings of numerous rare species of birds from the trails and overlooks along this stretch of road. Peregrine falcons nest on the cliffs and are sometimes spotted soaring overhead. Eastern meadowlarks and bobolinks can be heard singing their

distinctive songs, cerulean warblers inhabit the forests, and several nesting pairs of northern saw-whet owls have been recorded in the area. Overall, more than 250 species of birds make their homes along the scenic roadway, making the Parkway a popular destination for bird watchers.

While the views from your vehicle can be incredible, getting out into nature allows for an immersive experience. Numerous trails offer an opportunity to stretch stiff legs and experience the Parkway’s wonders up close. At milepost 422.4, Devil’s Courthouse offers a short but moderately challenging hike at just under one mile. As intrepid adventurers reach a summit of 5,720 feet, the view extends into South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Just down the road at milepost 420.2, Black Balsam Knob Loop provides a more extended tour of about 5 miles, but the terrain is relatively level and suitable for most children and dogs. Due to past wildfires and logging, the mountaintop here is bald and allows for awe-inspiring 360-degree views at 6,214 feet above sea level. Hikers marvel at the plentiful wildflowers along the way, and foragers can gather blueberries.

Most day trippers will have worked up an appetite at this point! Luckily, exhausted trailblazers will discover the Pisgah Inn just around the corner at milepost 408.6. Perched on the side of the

Parkway at 5,000 feet in elevation, the Inn provides the rustic ambiance of a remote roadside motel with enough modern amenities to relieve sore feet and a rumbling stomach.

Visitors can dine on carefully curated dishes such as the popular Walnut Encrusted Fillet of Mountain Trout in the Inn’s full-service restaurant — the only restaurant located directly on the Parkway — or choose from to-go sandwiches, salads, and desserts in the gift shop. Take your snacks and libations out to the observation deck, where you will marvel at the rolling, misty mountains and views stretching for miles. That same view can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere in the world, via the Inn’s live camera feed on their website.

Just down the road, at milepost 407.6, the Mount Pisgah trailhead departs the parking lot and ascends through hardwood forest to reach the 5,721-foot summit. Those who brave the climb to the observation deck can view Cold Mountain to the west and Pisgah Inn to the southwest. Looking Glass Rock and Frying Pan Mountain lie in the distance, and in the other direction, Asheville appears as a toy city nestled in the hills.

Continuing east along the Parkway, Asheville lies just 14 miles away. After passing Mount Pisgah, the terrain begins to drop, and you experience the feeling of returning to civilization.

Exiting the Parkway at milepost 393.6 brings you to The North Carolina Arboretum, a 434-acre public garden featuring diverse botanical species. More than ten miles of hiking and biking trails within the Arboretum’s grounds connect with several Parkway trails, Powhatan Lake, and the Pisgah National Forest. With walkways as short as 0.3 miles, the Arboretum makes an excellent stop for those who wish to abstain from more strenuous hikes.

In addition to the forested landscape, the Arboretum features more than 65 acres of cultivated gardens, presenting both permanent installations and seasonal exhibits. The National Native Azalea Collection showcases nearly every azalea species native to the United States, and the Bonsai Exhibition Garden hosts up to 50 varieties of native and exotic dwarf ornamental trees. Throughout the park, wildflowers bloom from early spring through fall, and the Arboretum’s landscapers deliberately cultivate numerous

plants that attract and support pollinators such as butterflies.

Each year, the Arboretum’s signature exhibit seeks to reimagine an ages-old textile tradition. The Quilt Garden — composed of 24 squares, each covering 64 square feet — reflects Appalachian and early American colonial history via a carefully designed and executed horticultural masterpiece. Each flower is specifically chosen for its size, height, color, pruning requirements, and blooming time to maintain the overall integrity of the exhibit throughout the season.

After a day in the woods — and the clouds, it feels at times — a stop at the Folk Art Center at milepost 382 in East Asheville brings you back down to earth. Built in 1980, the Center celebrates and preserves Southern Appalachian culture and traditional folk arts within three exhibition spaces, a library, and an enormous craft shop. Every day from March through December, craft demonstrations on topics like pottery, basket weaving, fiber arts, and quilting enlighten visitors on the intricate processes used to create these works of art.

Folk art aficionados will delight at the wares for sale here; the Allanstand Craft Shop’s utterly unique, handcrafted items represent authentic mountain culture infused with the passion and life work of local artists. Shoppers discover one-ofa-kind crocheted shawls, inspired jewelry pieces, pottery to adorn their homes, blown glass objects, and much more. A carefully chosen souvenir will represent special vacation memories and serve as a conversation piece for years to come.

If you’re still driving the Parkway at dusk, pull over and turn off your headlights for a few moments. On many summer evenings, fireflies light up the mountains with their romantic, twinkling displays. Later, the absence of city lights provides the perfect, dark canvas for constellations etched across the night sky. On rare occasions during solar storms, drivers witness the aurora borealis to the north!

Residents of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau can return home by taking the Parkway to milepost 411.8, heading south on Highway 276 toward Brevard, and finally turning west to Cashiers on Highway 64. Drivers along this route are often thrilled to discover one last hidden gem in the Pisgah Forest. To the left on Highway 276, Looking

Glass Falls rushes over the boulders and into the picturesque creek that runs alongside the road. The 60-foot waterfall is worth the stop and provides a magical photo opportunity.

From Waynesville to Asheville, this section of road covers only about 50 miles of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway. With so much to see and do on the famed roadway, visitors could spend all day traversing just a small section. The beauty of the natural surroundings and the variety of recreational opportunities along the way are sure to inspire future trips. However, the adventure requires some foresight and planning.

PREPARING FOR THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

• Pay attention to weather conditions while planning your trip, and remember that even a summer day can feel chilly at high elevations.

• Because signage is limited on the Parkway, mapping the trip ahead of time is essential. Determine stops ahead of time and take note of mileposts, which will aid navigation. Mileage on the Parkway is delineated starting in Virginia and ending at milepost 469 at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

• Avoid relying upon GPS or cell service, as they are both notoriously unreliable on the Parkway. Download your route from Google Maps for offline use, and you’ll be able to navigate regardless of cell phone signal.

• No matter how adorable and cuddly they appear, never approach bears! Feeding them acclimates them to humans and can create treacherous situations for both us and the bears.

• Gas up your vehicle ahead of time because exits are few and far between, and plan for meals.

• Switch on your headlights in the Parkway’s numerous tunnels; daylight turns pitch black quickly, and taking precautions will help ensure safety on the beautiful but occasionally risky drive.

THE 60TH INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION OF LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

From Frieze to Cannes, there are annual global film festivals, art fairs, art exhibitions, and events that excite culture vultures everywhere. Few, however, run the entire creative arts gamut quite like the Venice Biennale.

Since the late 19th century, La Biennale di Venezia has been at the forefront of journeying into the heart of contemporary creativity. This year, the arts extravaganza celebrates its 60th, offering vast culture-enriching experiences in the disciplines of art, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and theater.

SPREAD ACROSS MULTIPLE VENUES NESTLED WITHIN THE LABYRINTH OF VENICE’S WINDING CANALS AND REGAL PALAZZOS, BIENNALE ARTE 2024 BOASTS ONE OF THE MOST DYNAMIC, SOCIOPOLITICAL PROGRAMS YET. IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO EXPERIENCE VENICE’S CULTURAL RICHNESS AMIDST A BACKDROP OF EXQUISITE LANDMARKS AND GAWPWORTHY SCENERY THAT HAS INSPIRED ARTISTS FOR CENTURIES.

THE 60TH INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION OF LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA: WHAT TO EXPECT

The 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, which runs for seven months until November 24, is curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the artistic director of Brazil’s Museu de Arte de São Paulo. His theme, Foreigners Everywhere , spotlights artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporic, émigrés, exiled, or refugees.

In what’s a profound exploration into the concept of identity and belonging, 331 artists from 80 nations present everything from sculpture to installation at Venice’s Arsenale and Giardini della Biennale venues.

Unmissable highlights include Aboriginal artist Archie Moore’s meticulous chalk drawing of an Australian First Nation family tree that expresses 65,000 years of the artist’s family history. Then at Arsenale, the Palermo-based collective by the Italian-British artist duo Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill confronts contemporary art and societal challenges by exploring themes of political powerlessness and individual

identity crisis in their exhibition Foreigners Everywhere / Stranieri Ovunque. Multilingual neon sculptures confront issues of xenophobia and cultural displacement, echoing the struggles of marginalized groups in a globalized world.

HOW TO DO LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

The sheer scope of the arts available to experience can appear overwhelming, so prioritize the exhibitions, performances, or shows you want to see by booking tickets online in advance at labiennale.org . Bear in mind that the International Theatre Festival, the International Festival of Contemporary Dance, the Venice International Film Festival, and the International Festival of Contemporary Music run for a week or two through summer and fall. Theater is in June, Dance runs from July and August, Film runs from August to September, and Music runs from September to October.

For a VIP experience, bagging a Biennale Card will grant you different access levels. Available in five tiers, the card can secure you anything from discounted tickets right up to

gala dinners complete with fireworks. Do keep your eye open for exclusive Biennale events, such as private viewings, artist talks, intimate screenings, and VIP receptions.

The Participating Countries have their own pavilion, representing selected artists’ works and offering a diverse and immersive glimpse into global contemporary artistry. Consider dedicating three days to maximize your Biennale experience: one to spend at the Arsenale, one to spend at the Giardini della Biennale, and another

to check out the fringe Collateral Events and external pavilions dotted around Venice.

The Biennale is spread across the city of Venice, so be prepared to jump in a vaporetto (“water bus”) to get from one venue to another. But that’s part of the fun anyway. Alternatively, seek a private or guided tour that can whisk you to the Biennale’s main hotspots without having to navigate canals and narrow cobbled streets.

A HAVEN IN THE CLOUDS

SKY VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB

Cradled within a serene valley at an impressive 3,500 feet above sea level, Sky Valley Country Club is distinctively located in Georgia’s highest and northernmost city. The location, which straddles the North Carolina/Georgia state line, offers proximity to the upscale enclave of Highlands while allowing for quick and easy access down to Atlanta through the hills of Appalachia. This serene community, now known for its picturesque views and vibrant social scene, has transformed dramatically since its early beginnings in the 1970s.

word S by emily davi S photography by courtney S nyder AT

The story of Sky Valley begins with a group of investors who purchased a 2,500-acre cattle ranch in the late 1960s, sharing a vision of a unique resort destination. In 1969, Sky Valley Resort opened its doors to instant recognition as the southernmost ski resort community in the United States, featuring Georgia’s only snow skiing facilities. The city of Sky Valley was subsequently incorporated in March 1978, marking the beginning of its evolution into a distinct community.

However, the resort’s focus shifted over the years as new owners acquired Sky Valley Resort in 2004 and closed the ski slopes. The economic downturn of 2008 prompted further changes, notably impacting the ownership of the golf course. Recognizing the need to preserve and enhance their community, Sky Valley homeowners invested in the golf course, revamping the property into the Sky Valley Country Club. This shift marked the resort’s transformation into a semi-private, member-owned club that emphasizes sustainability and a neighborly spirit.

Since its rebirth on June 1, 2013, Sky Valley Country Club has flourished, with its membership growing steadily each year. The completed clubhouse now stands as a central hub where members savor excellent cuisine and professional service in a heavenly setting. The clubhouse offers options to please all diners with two distinct dining options — a casual clubhouse menu featuring burgers, sandwiches, and wraps and a more upscale weekend menu available on Friday and Saturday nights. Fan favorites include the rotating menu of flatbread pizzas, a Thursday night special, and the always-popular Reuben sandwich. On weekends, live local music often contributes to the lively and festive ambiance.

Now in its 11th season, the club continues to foster a robust and committed membership, with generations of families creating lifelong memories and expanding their social circles.

A CLASSIC COMBINATION OF AMENITIES

At the heart of any country club lies its unique combination of member amenities. A central feature of the club, the Sky Valley golf course has evolved from its original Bill Watts design in the 1970s to the current redesign and layout by Bill Bergin in the early 2000s. Those enhancements maintained the course’s reputation for quality

and challenge, helping to distinguish it from other courses in the area. Players engage in stimulating rounds of golf while appreciating the verdant valley floor nestled amongst the mountaintops that rise around it.

The construction of a championship-sized croquet lawn in 2018 added a new dimension to Sky Valley’s roster of activities. Recognized by the United States Croquet Association as the 2018 New Club of the Year, the club’s croquet program has since flourished. With close to 200 members actively participating, the croquet lawn provides a scenic environment for social and competitive play, further strengthening bonds within the community.

While not typically defined as an amenity, the area’s natural beauty is an acclaimed aspect of Sky Valley that exceeds expectations and demands recognition. At a relatively high elevation in the Southern Appalachians, the temperate climate, unpolluted air, lush forests, and cool, rushing rivers provide a balm to the soul. From a home base in Sky Valley, a short drive brings residents to a plethora of hiking trails, public lakes, and even the Blue Ridge Parkway. On the community’s property, Mud Creek Falls provides a beautiful landmark as well as a relaxing picnic spot. Mud Creek Falls Trail, approximately one mile in length, offers a peaceful hike to those who seek outdoor recreation.

Due to its alluring natural beauty, relaxed atmosphere, and location convenient to major cities like Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Charlotte, Sky Valley Country Club has become a soughtafter venue for weddings and private events. While the club is new to hosting weddings, it offers various customizable options to cater to each couple’s unique vision. Whether it’s a small ceremony by the lake, a lively reception, or a rehearsal dinner, the expansive and inviting clubhouse provides the perfect setting for memorable celebrations.

TAILORED MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS

A unique feature for a country club, Sky Valley offers a variety of membership options designed to match different interests and lifestyles. Each membership level provides unique benefits and privileges, ensuring every member can find their place within this dreamlike valley.

In 2024, Sky Valley Country Club introduced an Equity Membership. This membership can be passed down through the member’s immediate family, granting voting rights, options to serve on the Board of Directors, and an ownership stake in the club. This sense of ownership fosters a strong community bond and allows members to impact the club’s future directly.

The Full Golf Membership includes unlimited access to the golf course, cart usage, range, and simulator facilities. This level of membership is ideal for avid golfers who want to take full advantage of the club’s top-notch golfing amenities without interest in holding equity in the club.

A Clubhouse Membership provides access to the clubhouse facilities, including dining and social events. This arrangement is perfect for those who enjoy the social aspects of the club and want to participate in community events but are not interested in or committed to golf.

Introduced with the addition of a championshipsized croquet lawn in 2018, the Croquet

Membership has rapidly gained popularity among locals who enjoy the game of croquet. The croquet program offers a fun and competitive diversion that enhances the club’s closeknit community.

ENGAGING WITH THE COMMUNITY

Sky Valley Country Club maintains its commitment to balancing member services while engaging with the broader community by hosting events and private functions. Although the clubhouse is exclusive to members, the golfing amenities are open to the public, allowing visitors to experience the magic of the course. The club’s bar, holding the charming moniker “The Corner,” is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday and provides a casual dining and social experience for all.

THE CLUB ARRANGES ITS SOCIAL CALENDAR AROUND A VARIETY OF POPULAR EVENTS, PARTICULARLY ON MAJOR HOLIDAYS SUCH AS NEW YEAR’S EVE, THE FOURTH OF JULY, AND ST. PATRICK’S DAY. THESE PARTIES OFTEN FEATURE THEMED FOOD AND DRINK OPTIONS, AND MEMBERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DRESS UP AND CELEBRATE MEMORABLY. THE WARM-SEASON MONTHS

(MAY TO OCTOBER) ARE PARTICULARLY VIBRANT, USHERING IN SIGNIFICANT GATHERINGS SUCH AS THE MEMBER-GUEST EVENT IN MID-SEPTEMBER AND THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS IN EARLY OCTOBER. SKY VALLEY MAINTAINS A LIVELY ATMOSPHERE EVEN IN THE OFF-SEASON, WITH HIGHLY ANTICIPATED EVENTS EXTENDING THROUGH CHRISTMAS AND INTO THE NEW YEAR.

LOOKING AHEAD

Sky Valley Country Club continues to look to the future with ambitious plans for membership growth, facility enhancements, and community gatherings.

As for social engagement, stated objectives range from hosting more golf tournaments to introducing new social events, such as a wine and dine night, during which a local sommelier pairs suggested wines with the menu. These

initiatives aim to enhance Sky Valley’s already vibrant and fun atmosphere, ensuring it remains a cherished destination for members and guests for years to come.

The community has come a long way since its origins as a resort in the late 1960s. Today, Sky Valley Country Club remains a semi-private, member-owned organization offering a rich array of amenities and activities. With its varied membership options, engaging community events, and breathtaking natural setting, the club continues to provide an idyllic environment where generations of families create lifelong friendships and memories.

SIMS VALLEY

At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them.

Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often design for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this oneof-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of

Ah, the French Riviera, where azure skies flirt with crystal-clear waters, Belle Époque cities, and postcard-perfect landscapes. As summer casts its golden glow upon this enchanting coastline, the allure of the Côte d’Azur becomes irresistible.

From Cannes’ legendary Croisette and the razzledazzle of Monte Carlo to the sleepy towns of Èze and Menton, the Cote d’Azur does high-octane glamor and rustic charm in equal measures.

If you’re in Paris for the Olympics or just planning a European escape, a French Riviera tour is an absolute must. It’s less than a nine-hour drive from Paris, or just a quick hour-and-a-half flight from there to Nice. Whether you hire a car and leisurely drive the coastal route along its chicest ports of call, or choose a handful of destinations, you’re in for a tantalizing blend of culture, fine foods, and unadulterated Provençal beauty.

NICE

PROMENADE STROLLS AND #RIVIERAGOALS

With Monaco and Menton to the East and Cannes and Saint Tropez to the west, Nice is the Côte d’Azur’s Ground Zero. Make this vibrant coastal city your landing base, and from here, pick your path to Riviera bliss.

Nestled between the twinkling Med and rugged Riviera hills, Nice marries seaside elegance and vibrant urban culture. First up, a stroll along the iconic Promenade des Anglais. This is where palmfringed boulevards and Belle Époque architecture evoke the glamor of a bygone era. Bag a lounger or table for lunch at the stylish Plage Beau Rivage Nice beach club.

The old town of Vieux Nice’s labyrinthine alleyways begs to be explored. Colorful façades and bustling markets evoke Provence’s medieval past. At Cours Saleya market, you can pick up lavender and antiques.

Discover the artistic legacy of the region at the Musée National Marc Chagall and the Musée Matisse. Masterpiece paintings, drawings, and engravings by these renowned artists illuminate the walls with a symphony of color and emotion.

No visit to Nice would be complete without a visit to Castle Hill, a scenic oasis perched high above the city. Ascend to the summit and be rewarded with panoramic views that stretch from the waters of the Med to the rugged mountains of the hinterland.

Where to stay? Smack-dab on the Promenade des Anglais, Le Negresco is Belle Époque glamor on steroids. From its lavish suites adorned with priceless antiques to its Michelin-starred Le Chantecler restaurant, Le Negresco is Nice’s quintessential hotel.

ÈZE

MEDIEVAL MAJESTY

Heading east along the coast from Nice, Èze is an enchanting hilltop enclave that’ll whisk you back to the days of knights and troubadours. Lose yourself along its ancient cobblestones and ivycovered buildings amidst the quaint boutiques, art galleries, and charming cafés.

For a taste of local history and culture, visit the Chapelle de la Sainte Croix, a 14th-century chapel that boasts stunning frescoes and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Or, explore the ruins of the ancient Èze Castle, which offer a fascinating glimpse into the village’s rich and storied past.

MONACO

THE JEWEL OF THE RIVIERA

Needing little introduction, glitz and glamour reign supreme in Monaco. This itty-bitty principality is where Lamborghinis purr, roulette tables spin, and haute couture glistens in the Mediterranean sun.

Gaze in wonder at the mega-yachts bobbing in the harbor before people-watching over at Alain Ducasse’s Riviera Lunch at his triple-starred Le Louis XV. Then, retreat to the tranquil oasis of the Jardin Exotique, where exotic succulents flourish and tumble over the cliff edge overlooking the cerulean sea.

If high-stakes gambling is your thing, indulge in a bet or two at the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, where the spirit of James Bond lingers amid the roulette tables and baccarat salons.

MENTON

A PICTURESQUE PARADISE

The antithesis of Monaco, neighboring town Menton is all understated elegance. Sleepier and possibly more seductive, it borders Italy. You could be forgiven for thinking you’re there, with its pastel pink and lemon-hued houses clustering down the hill to the water’s edge, Amalfi Coast-style.

Away from the crowds of Nice and Monaco, get stuck into exploring the nooks and crannies of Menton’s old town. CerruttiMaori’s trompe-l’œil paintings in SaintMichel Archangel Basilica will take your breath away.

Jean Cocteau fell in love with Menton’s enchanting landscapes. His work is celebrated in not one but two museums, the Jean Cocteau Bastion Museum and the Jean Cocteau Museum — Séverin Wunderman Collection

ANTIBES

A COASTAL CANVAS

Just over half an hour’s drive west of Nice, Antibes — like Menton — is rich with artistic history. After all, this is the place that captivated Picasso, Monet, and de Staël. F. Scott Fitzgerald summered here, taking residency at the Villa Saint Louis. So, why did Antibes capture the hearts and imagination of so many illustrious artists? In short: it’s stunning . Think alluring beaches, ancient stone walls that glow gold in the sun, and a gorgeous harbor with sailboats and superyachts alike.

Unlike many Riviera beaches, Antibes’ are sandy. A horseshoe-shaped stretch framed by the city’s medieval ramparts, Plage de la Gravette is perfect for a mid-exploring dip. Afterward, indulge in handmade foie gras and local sea bass tartare for lunch at the exquisite Maison de Bacon which overlooks the sea.

For a post-lunch leg stretch, you could head to the bustling Marché Provençal to explore the vibrant stalls selling fresh produce, fragrant spices, and artisanal crafts and pick up a souvenir or two to

take home. Or, take a scenic stroll along the picturesque coastline of Cap d’Antibes. Follow the winding coastal path past rugged cliffs, secluded coves, and luxurious villas.

CANNES CINEMATIC SPLENDOR

Another Côte d’Azur icon, Cannes is the epitome of Riviera sophistication. Naturally, all eyes are on this city each year for the Cannes Film Festival, but this once-fishing village retains its sparkle all year round.

Perhaps no boulevard is more famous than The Promenade de la Croisette. Lined with palm trees, luxury boutiques, and chic cafés, this 1.8-mile, palm-fringed promenade is Cannes’ beating heart. Shop the new season’s collections at Prada, Ralph Lauren, and Celine before drinking a pit-stop James Bond cocktail at Harry’s Bar at la Croisette’s end.

For a soupçon of cinematic glamor, ascend the red-carpeted steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. This is where movie stars and industry luminaries gather each year to celebrate the art of cinema in style.

Fresh from a luxurious new refurb, the Carlton Cannes presides over the Mediterranean like a regal grande dame. This swish, history-laden hotel was where Alfred Hitchcock filmed To Catch a Thief with Grace Kelly and comes complete with a gym, spa, beach club, and three top restaurants.

GRASSE

THE WORLD’S PERFUME CAPITAL

As you drive inland from Cannes, the glitz and glam fade in your rear-view mirror, and the pastoral charm of Grasse emerges. This insanely pretty town is regarded as the perfume capital of the world. Why? Fields and fields of fragrant tuberose, jasmine, geraniums, irises, and roses surround the town.

Grasse itself oozes Provençal charm and olfactory overload. Weave around its medieval cobblestone streets and hop from perfumery to perfumery. Galimard and Molinard are Grasse mainstays that still cultivate and blend their fragrances using centuries-old traditions. Fragonard even offers tours around its factory and bottling shop. Here, you can learn their manufacturing techniques and the history of their precious perfumes.

SAINT-TROPEZ

RIVIERA CHIC PERSONIFIED

Saint-Tropez’s sun-drenched beaches and vibrant nightlife have beckoned the jet-set elite from around the globe since Brigitte Bardot landed there in the 1950s. Her legacy and allure remain at Pampelonne Beach, where bronzed bodies lounge upon plush sunbeds and crystal-clear waters lap against the shore.

Of course, nowhere is Saint-Tropez’s mystique more mythologized than at the legendary Club 55. Here, you’ll rub shoulders with A-listers and socialites as you chow down on your Ramatuelle puff pastry and chilled rosé.

But it’s not all attention-seeking antics and flash fancy, Saint-Tropez is full of hidden charms. Explore its historic heart along the charming old town streets. Narrow alleys are awash with traditional Provençal houses, art galleries, and boutiques like Le Civette and FRED.

Featuring over 35,000 specimens, The Butterfly Museum is a gem tucked away in the ancient Gardens Quarter. Then for an authentic SaintTropez experience, amble five minutes to the quaint Place des Lices, where locals gather for boules. Saturday is market day, so grab fresh pastries, herbs, and cheese.

THE FRENCH RIVIERA: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

• Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is the main gateway to the French Riviera. Flying from the American East Coast requires a connecting flight from London Heathrow, or you can fly directly to Nice from Paris.

• Consider renting a car to explore the region independently. Heli Air Monaco offers helicopter tours and transfers from Nice to Monaco.

• Pack light, breathable clothing suitable for warm Mediterranean weather, including swimwear for beach days.

• Bring comfortable walking shoes for navigating cobblestone streets and coastal paths.

• Learn a few basic French phrases.

• Sought-after restaurants and beach clubs get booked up in the peak summer season, so make your reservations in advance.

From May 2 to 4, the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau witnessed a weekend of merriment and memories for anglers of all skill levels at The 13th Annual 3 River Fly Fishing Festival. Participants converged upon the town of Highlands and then scattered throughout the serene wilderness of Western North Carolina, fishing in three different rivers that each provided a unique and challenging experience. Beyond the festivities and shared enjoyment of the outdoors for entrants, the event supported a compelling local cause.

The aptly named festival refers to three distinct local waterways: one native, one hatcherysupported, and one delayed-harvest river that provided a diverse angling experience and challenged each team’s skills and adaptability. Open to 50 teams of two, the annual event generates significant revenue to support the Town of Highlands Scholarship Fund, making the festival not only an exciting event but also a meaningful one.

The 3 River schedule of events kicked off on Thursday evening when arriving teams checked in at Old Edwards Inn’s Springhouse. As participants

savored craft cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, event hosts reviewed tournament rules, ensuring everyone felt well-prepared for the days ahead. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and anticipation as anglers mingled and compared strategies for the upcoming days.

Friday’s excursions kicked off early with a 7:30 AM roll call at Highland Hiker, the event coordinators and host, where participants met their guides and declared their team’s fishing destinations. The morning was energized with coffee provided by Calders, setting the stage for a full day of outdoor delight, and scrumptious lunches by The Secret Garden kept anglers satiated on the river. The day concluded at Highlands Smokehouse, where teams returned their scoresheets and enjoyed a complimentary drink while sharing stories of the day’s catches.

PARTICIPANT SAVANA KELLEY, WHO COMPRISED HALF OF A TWO-WOMAN TEAM, SAYS THAT FISHING WAS ONLY PART OF HER MOTIVATION FOR TAKING PART IN THE FESTIVAL. “I LOVE FISHING, BUT THIS WAS A FRIENDLY COMPETITION, AND IT WASN’T

REALLY ABOUT WINNING. I APPRECIATED HAVING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO GET MORE INVOLVED IN MY COMMUNITY, SOCIALIZE WITH THE OTHER PARTICIPANTS, AND HELP A LOCAL CHARITY THAT PROVIDES A MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTION TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES. I HAD A LOT OF FUN FOR A GREAT CAUSE!”

Saturday followed a similar schedule, with early risers gathering to declare their destinations and setting out for another day on the rivers. From 10 AM to 12 PM, Harris Lake hosted a free fly casting lesson from Highland Hiker, which was a hit among participants looking to hone their skills.

The festival culminated in a joyous awards gala Saturday evening, where participants regaled each other and shared tall tales of prized catches over dinner and drinks. A silent auction offered the opportunity to return home with tempting loot and further boost the scholarship fund.

As it has each year since its inception, the 3 River Fly Fishing Festival celebrated the passion of outdoorsmen while serving as a significant fundraiser for local high school graduates. The event fostered a sense of community, bringing together anglers from different backgrounds to enjoy the serene rivers around Highlands, NC while learning new techniques and forging friendships over their shared love of the outdoors. With a thirteenth year now under its belt, the festival enjoyed resounding success, leaving participants hooked on the camaraderie of their sport and eagerly anticipating next year’s event.

A PEEK INTO THE APPLE TV+ SERIES

OUR RATING

In the high-stakes world of couture, where every stitch tells a story and every hemline hides a secret, Apple TV+ serves up a tantalizing dish with The New Look . But beware, beneath the layers of silk and tulle lies a drama as complex as a meticulously crafted gown … and just as prone to unraveling.

At first glance, The New Look appears to be a glamorous foray into post-war Parisian fashion, a realm where Christian Dior's ethereal designs reign supreme and Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel's irreverent spirit refuses to be confined. We see the meteoric rise of Christian Dior and his ‘New Look’ and the ins and outs of his epic dethroning of Chanel as the hottest designer of the day.

Visually, The New Look possesses a magnetic allure that is impossible to resist. From the glittering ballrooms of the Ritz to the smokefilled backrooms of wartime intrigue, each scene is imbued with a sense of palpable tension, drawing viewers deeper into a world where beauty and betrayal walk hand in hand.

Creator Todd A. Kessler weaves a tapestry of intrigue, intertwining the lives of Dior and Chanel amidst the tumult of Nazi-occupied France. But as the plot unfurls, it becomes clear that beneath the shimmering façade lies a narrative thread stretched gossamer thin, unable to bear the weight of its own ambition. To wit: the series treats World War II as a mere inconvenience to the world of fashion, a backdrop against which the rivalry between two titans of couture unfolds.

Juliette Binoche, resplendent as the indomitable Chanel, and Ben Mendelsohn, embodying Dior's quiet intensity, deliver performances that elevate the show, infusing it with a vitality that transcends the script's shortcomings. Glenn Close also takes a brilliant turn as Harper’s Bazaar steely editrix, Carmel Snow.

Yet even their talents cannot fully salvage a narrative that struggles to reconcile the glamour of the runway with the grim realities of wartime collaboration.

While the series endeavors to delve into the moral complexities of its protagonists' choices, it often falls short, offering little more than a surface-level exploration of their motivations. The result is a tale that, much like a questionably constructed garment, lacks the substance to withstand scrutiny.

Yet amidst the missteps and missed opportunities, The New Look still manages to captivate, offering glimpses into the lives of two enigmatic figures whose legacies continue to loom large over the world of fashion. From Dior's guilt-ridden

collaborations with the enemy to Chanel's precarious dance with power, the series lays bare the contradictions and compromises that lie at the heart of creativity.

In the end, The New Look may not be the masterpiece it aspires to be, but it is a compelling exploration of art, ambition, and the price of success. So, slip into your finest attire, and prepare to be transported to a world where the seams of history are stitched with threads of glamour and intrigue.

Watch The New Look today on Apple TV+ and share your favorite moments with #NCLNewLook.
