A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
As the fall season graces the Plateau, we find ourselves in one of the most cherished times of the year — a time to gather with family and friends in celebration. This season, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Recently, our region experienced the remnants of Hurricane Helene, which passed over Western North Carolina. Although the Plateau was fortunate to sustain minimal damage, restoring essential services posed challenges for some of our utility providers. Thanks to the remarkable efforts of our community and the dedication of first responders, life returned to normal quickly.
Our neighbors in the greater Asheville area, however, were significantly impacted, and their rebuilding efforts will take months, if not years. I am especially proud of our Silver Creek team, whose tireless support extended both to our local community on the Plateau and to the broader Western North Carolina region. Countless hours of volunteer work, supplies, and heartfelt care exemplify the spirit of compassion that makes this community so special.
On the real estate front, the market on the Plateau remains robust. The Silver Creek Real Estate Group team continues to lead the way, marketing and closing more transactions year to date than any other firm in the area. This leadership provides our clients with exclusive insights and market trends that others simply cannot offer. As the market moves toward equilibrium, we see the time on market for properties increasing, a shift we have anticipated. Our sellers appreciate the exceptional marketing and results we continue to deliver during this period of adjustment.
I hope you enjoy this latest issue of NC Living magazine, featuring captivating tablescapes, how to score a rare handbag, bringing back screen-free holidays, and the latest in luxury travel.
On behalf of the entire team at Silver Creek Real Estate Group, I wish you a wonderful holiday season, safe travels, and express our deepest gratitude for our community and our clients.
Warmest regards,
JOCHEN

TABLESCAPE BY KIRK MOORE
Take Your Seat
Take Your Seat
TREMENDOUS TABLESCAPES
THE DAINTIEST OF CHINA. NAPKINS FOLDED JUST SO. CANDLES FLICKERING SOFTLY. FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS THAT EVOKE THE ESSENCE OF THE SEASON. CREATING THE PERFECT TABLESCAPE IS LIKE CONDUCTING AN OPERA WHERE ALL ELEMENTS UNITE TO TELL AN UNFORGETTABLE STORY.
TABLESCAPES ARE THAT ESSENTIAL TALKING POINT THAT NOT ONLY SET THE SCENE FOR A MEAL BUT TRANSFORM A SIMPLE AFFAIR INTO A MEMORABLE OCCASION. AS THE HOLIDAYS ARRIVE, FIND YOUR TABLESCAPE INSPIRATION WITH THOUGHTFULLY CURATED DECOR, SEASONAL FLORALS, AND HEIRLOOM ACCENTS THAT EVOKE WARMTH AND FESTIVITY.
TABLE TALK
From country club balls to ladies’ luncheons, Sandy Linebaugh creates exquisite tablescapes for the Plateau’s grandest gatherings. Linebaugh founded Fiddlehead Designs two years after seeking solitude in the mountains in 2006 with her husband, Ed. The event and wedding florist shop expanded into their Cashiers store, featuring a beautiful edit of home decor, garden accessories, and gifts.
From start to finish, how does Linebaugh go about orchestrating a showstopping tablescape? For her, it’s all about the guest experience. Linebaugh asserts, “After starting with the occasion, we discuss how our client wants their guests to feel. For instance, are we treating them to an extravagantly elegant dining experience? Are we creating a more relaxed and fun environment? Or an all-out wild celebration?”

WITH KIRK MOORE AND SANDY LINEBAUGH
Then, it’s time to consider the aesthetics. “We discuss a color palette, which can also support how the table makes guests feel,” explains Linebaugh. “Once we’ve landed on the level of sophistication, all other choices are made to support the theme. This is when you should consider your table linens, dishes, flatware, stemware, lighting and candles, florals, herbs, and textures to support the theme or feel of your event.”
ALL THOSE LITTLE DETAILS COUNT. THINK HANDWRITTEN PLACE CARDS, UNEXPECTED TEXTURES, AND ORNATE FINERY. A COHESIVE COLOR SCHEME WILL SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT THE MOOD. CLASSIC CHRISTMAS COLORS, SUCH AS RED, GREEN, AND GOLD, FOSTER A TRADITIONAL AMBIANCE, WHILE CONTEMPORARY PALETTES — THINK ICY BLUES AND SILVERS — OFFER A FRESH TWIST.
Often, Linebaugh turns to her tablescape partner in crime, Cynthia Turoff of Edgewood Antiques, with whom she worked to create their magnificent NC Living spread. Both a client and friend, Turoff’s Cashiers store purveys sublimely sourced fine antiques and furnishings that make the perfect accompaniment to Linebaugh’s creative vision. Together, their collaboration transforms each table into a lavish display where every item feels purposeful and thoughtfully placed. Whether incorporating heirloom silverware or hand-painted porcelain, Turoff’s curated antiques bring a remarkable depth and charm to Linebaugh’s designs.
What fabulous parties have they pulled off together? “We did an incredible wedding party with an arrangement with ornaments all the way down the table,” enthuses Turoff. “We used Tiffany and Audubon china and placed exotic animals peeking out from the floral arrangement. Then, we held a glamorous bridesmaids’ luncheon with huge pink feathers. Sandy decorated the dining chandelier and some great big urns of mine. All the girls wore boas. It was so girly and wonderful.”
BLOOMING GENIUS
There is little about spectacular flora that garden designer and historian Kirk Moore doesn’t know. Owner of Highlands’ Oakleaf Flower & Garden, Moore has worked on landmark projects for Colonial Williamsburg and the Historic Savannah Foundation. You may even recognize him from his QVC show American Gardener and as Good
Morning America’s gardening and lifestyle correspondent. Armed with his encyclopedic knowledge of flowers and a store brimming with gorgeous pots and containers, Moore is a master of setting the table scene.
AS EMBODIED BY HIS TABLESCAPE ADORNED WITH APPLES AND BERRY SPRIGS, FOR MOORE, CREATING A SHOWPIECE IS ABOUT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE CORNUCOPIA OF LOCAL PLANT LIFE THIS TIME OF YEAR. “AT HOLIDAY TIME, WE ARE BLESSED IN THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTH CAROLINA WITH A PLETHORA OF GREENS AND BERRIES FOR DECORATING,” HE SAYS. “THIS PERFECTLY TIES IN WITH THE TREND FOR NATIVE PLANTS. AS A GARDEN HISTORIAN, THIS MAKES ME SMILE. IN THE 18TH CENTURY, SERIOUS GARDENERS IN ENGLAND WERE
FIDDLEHEAD DESIGNS AT EDGEWOOD ANTIQUES IN CASHIERS
FRANTIC FOR BOTANICAL SPECIMENS FROM AMERICA. IT WASN’T LONG BEFORE THE SHINY RED BERRIES OF OUR NATIVE CASSINA HOLLY WERE USED TO DECORATE GREAT HOUSES ACROSS BRITAIN.”
What plants and flowers does he recommend for seasonal tablescapes? “Native greens, berries, forced paperwhites in water and pebbles, and red amaryllis are visually striking and fragrant. In fact, the scent of paperwhites always takes me back to my childhood Christmases long ago.”
Linebaugh agrees. “We often use greenery like plants, flowers, mosses, grasses and even statuary in our tablescapes, indoor and outdoor. These natural elements bring texture, life, and movement to the table, creating a sense of freshness and grounding the overall design.”
When planning your seasonal tablescape, Moore underscores the importance of letting your interior design lead the way. “Your interior style should serve as the foundation for your holiday decorations,” he explains. “If your space is contemporary, you can still incorporate traditional elements but present them in a more modern way — like using sleek, fashion-forward containers to hold classics, such as evergreens or
OAKLEAF IN HIGHLANDS. OAKLEAFSTYLE.COM
ornaments. This balance ensures your tablescape complements your home’s overall aesthetic while still capturing the holiday spirit.”
SAVOR THE STORY
Above all, a tremendous tablescape is all about storytelling. “We always seek to capture a story, a theme, and a moment in time for each of the guests at that table to explore and enjoy,” enthuses Linebaugh. “While some tablescapes use elements from our mountains or forest floor, many do not. That is the fun in creating a tablescape. There are really no parameters and no rules.”
Moore concurs with his touching tablescape philosophy. “My mantra is ‘memories over the years and generations become traditions, and memories are best when shared.’” This holiday season, why not weave together the threads of connection, nostalgia, and creativity so your guests’ shared story lingers long after the last bite has been savored?
HOW TO SET YOUR TABLE SCENE MOOD MATTERS
Before diving into decor, consider the mood and ambiance you want to create for your guests and how you want your guests to feel. This will guide your choices and set the stage for the entire evening.
PALETTE PERFECTION
Choose a color scheme that supports your theme. Whether you opt for classic Christmas hues or unlikely ones, the right palette can turn a simple table into a work of art.
DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS
Don’t underestimate the power of small touches. Handwritten place cards, ornate accents, and monogrammed napkins can elevate your tablescape from basic to breathtaking.
FLORAL FLOURISHES
Embrace the bounty of the season with seasonal blooms, greenery, and perhaps a splash of berries. They add life, movement, and a lovely fragrance that transport your guests to a winter wonderland.
ANTIQUE APPEAL
Incorporate heirloom pieces or curated antiques to add depth and charm. Vintage silverware or hand-painted porcelain can spark conversation and bring a touch of history to your table.
NATURE’S TOUCH
Use local greens and native plants to create a fresh, organic look. Think forced paperwhites or striking red amaryllis to bring a pop of color and a hint of nostalgia to your holiday gathering.
STYLE CONNECTION
Make sure your tablescape aligns with your overall interior decor to keep the look cohesive and stylish. By choosing elements that resonate with your existing decor, you’ll dial up the dining experience and create an inviting atmosphere that feels both intentional and curated.
FUN AND FANTASY
Don’t shy away from a little whimsy and playful touches to let your creativity shine. Consider quirky centerpieces, vibrant colors, and unconventional place settings.
IN A WORLD WHERE JET-SETTING IS THE NORM, AND BORDERS ARE MERE GENTLE GATEWAYS, THE ALLURE OF DUAL CITIZENSHIP SPARKLES WITH AN IRRESISTIBLE CHARM. FOR THOSE WHO LIVE LIFE IN THE FAST LANE — AND PREFER THEIR PASSPORTS TO BE AS VERSATILE AS THEIR PORTFOLIOS — DUAL NATIONALITY IS MORE THAN JUST A STATUS; IT’S THE ULTIMATE LUXURY ACCESSORY.
Imagine blending the finest elements of international living with a touch of European flair, all while indulging in the comforts of home. Dual citizenship is not merely about having a second passport to flaunt. It’s about accessing a world of opportunities that money alone can’t buy. It’s about curating a life that effortlessly straddles continents, cultures, and currencies. If you’re considering adding another passport to your collection, it might be the smartest decision ever.
DOUBLE THE PASSPORTS, DOUBLE THE PERKS
Dual citizenship is a shrewd financial strategy. Investing abroad opens up an array of opportunities — luxury real estate, exclusive stock markets, and high-stake business ventures that were once out of reach. Beyond the business perks lies a wealth of cultural and educational benefits. Imagine immersing your family in Europe’s rich history, art, and cuisine while accessing top-tier education systems.
In an unpredictable world, dual nationality is also the ultimate insurance policy. Whether it’s political unrest or economic turmoil, having a second nationality means you always have a Plan B (or rather, a Plan V for vacation). It’s not just about where you can go; it’s about where you can thrive
UNLOCKING
EUROPE: PORTUGAL’S GOLDEN TICKET TO DUAL CITIZENSHIP
Eighteen countries allow dual citizenship with the United States, the majority being European. And with an EU passport, you can waltz through the entire European Union, no questions asked. Perfect for that last-minute French Riviera escape or a business deal in Milan. Of course, each country has its rules and regulations, so obtaining dual citizenship means playing ball with whatever your desired country requires.
From Lisbon’s cobblestone streets to the vineyards of Porto, Portugal is an exceedingly attractive country to seek citizenship. Since launching in 2012, its Golden Visa program has been one of the hottest routes, with almost ten thousand families receiving dual nationality. And what about those tantalizing benefits? The right to live, work, and study in any EU
country and visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 destinations worldwide.
PAULO LOPES, CEO OF A PORTUGUESE REAL ESTATE AGENCY, CASAIBERIA, IS AN EXPERT ON ASSISTING AMERICANS WITH HIS COUNTRY’S GOLDEN VISA PROGRAM. WHAT MAKES PORTUGAL SUCH A DESIRABLE PLACE TO INVEST AND SETTLE IN? “WE HAVE A WONDERFUL MILD CLIMATE, SAFETY, ECONOMIC STABILITY, A LOWER COST OF LIVING COMPARED TO OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, AND PROXIMITY TO MAJOR EUROPEAN CAPITALS, BOTH IN TERMS OF TRAVEL TIME AND COST.”
Until 2023, US citizens could take the real estate route to acquire Portuguese residency. Now that this is no longer an option, what routes does the Golden Visa accept? “Applicants can now qualify by investing €500,000 in venture capital funds, provided these are not related to the real estate sector,” explains Lopes. “Alternatively, they can create and maintain at least ten full-time jobs in a Portuguese company or invest €500,000 in an existing company to create at least five jobs.
Contributions of €500,000 to scientific research or €250,000 for the preservation of national cultural heritage also qualify for the Golden Visa.”
The Portuguese Golden Visa grants a fiveyear residence permit, after which permanent residency and citizenship can be applied for the entire family. The process is simple: a basic Portuguese language test and a demonstration of your connection to the community. Citizenship grants you full access to the European Union, opening doors to the continent’s most prestigious social and economic circles.
For some, the €500,000 requirement may be a barrier to entry. However, there are other routes to legal residence, according to Lopes. He states, “Portugal offers several pathways to legal residency beyond the Golden Visa, such as the D7, D2, and D3 visas. The D7 Visa suits retirees or those with passive income from sources like rentals or investments, providing residency, family reunification, and access to public services. The D2 Visa is ideal for entrepreneurs looking to start or relocate a business in Portugal, leading to permanent residency after five years. Meanwhile,
the D3 Visa targets highly qualified professionals with a job offer in Portugal, particularly in fields like technology and medicine.”
PICKING YOUR PERFECT
EUROPEAN PARADISE
Lopes outlines his key considerations for dual nationality if you are drawn to the seemingly limitless benefits but unsure which country to choose. He states, “Factors such as your desired lifestyle preferences, career opportunities, and family needs are absolute musts when deciding where to go.” So, think whether you’re drawn to the vibrant culture of Rome, the financial hubs of Zurich, or the tranquil surroundings of Sweden. Your choice should align with not just your practical needs but also with your long-term dreams.
Aside from Portugal, which other European countries does he recommend as strong dual citizenship destinations? “Spain offers citizenship after 10 years of residency, providing a high quality of life and EU access, though Spanish fluency is key. Italy and Germany also grant nationality after 10 and eight years, respectively, with cultural richness in Italy and economic strength in Germany — both requiring language proficiency. Ireland offers citizenship after five years and is English-speaking with strong EU ties, while Cyprus provides a fast track through significant investment or seven years of residency, offering tax advantages and a Mediterranean lifestyle.”
Dual citizenship is the ultimate power accessory in today’s global playground. It’s not just about flexing an extra passport. It’s about mastering the art of international living with style and ease. After all, why settle for one when you can have a world of possibilities at your fingertips?

THRILL-SEEK
Costa Rica isn’t just about relaxation — it’s an adrenaline junkie’s natural playground. Dominated by the iconic Arenal Volcano, a perfectly conical, active stratovolcano, Arenal Volcano National Park is the place for hiking,
canopy tours, and ziplining around its diverse ecosystems, from dense tropical forests to lava fields. Strap into AMA Extreme’s longest and highest line over La Fortuna waterfall and hurtle over canyons, above waterfalls, and through the forest.
Deep-sea fishing off the Pacific coast is a bucketlist activity for water lovers. Towns such as Quepos and Tamarindo are hotspots for anglers looking to reel in marlin, sailfish, or mahi-mahi. Inland fishing in rivers and lakes is equally enticing. Head to Lake Arenal to catch rainbow bass at the foot of the towering Arenal Volcano.
Costa Rica has remarkable river systems — the perfect backdrop for rafting that’ll turn your knuckles as white as the waters. Most hotspots are in the north-central region, from the legendary Rio Pacuare, with its mixture of rapids and tranquil stretches, to the challenging yet intimate waters of the Rio Tenorio.
IMMERSE
The biodiversity of Costa Rica’s landscape is staggering. Home to over half a million species — many of which are classified as rare or endangered — the country is a living tapestry of wildlife and wonder.
Take a guided canopy tour through the majestic Monteverde Cloud Forest. Situated at an awesome 1,400m elevation, its many suspended walkways connect you to its lofty boughs via misty trails filled with exotic plants, toucans, fluttering blue morpho butterflies, and elusive wildlife like jaguars and ocelots.
Costa Rica is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and has over 200 volcanic formations that trace back over 65 million years. The Rio Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park is an absolute must-see natural wonder. Its eye-popping azure waters weave through the rainforest, creating stunning waterfalls and natural hot springs. A 3.7mile hiking trail threads around this unique geological phenomenon.

EXPLORE
Right in the heart of Costa Rica is its capital, San José. Colorful, characterful, and pleasingly cosmopolitan, it’s a vibrant hub where oldworld charm meets modern dynamism. Known as Villa Nueva when it was settled in 1736, San José developed slowly as a tobacco center in the Spanish colonial era. Today, it’s an electric metropolis of historic barrios , grand Europeanstyle architecture, and bustling mercados
For a cultural deep dive, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum dazzles with its ancient treasures, while
the Museo Nacional offers a crash course in preColumbian Costa Rican history. Exquisitely ornate both inside and out, the resplendent The National Theatre of Costa Rica presents everything from classical concerts to contemporary plays. Even if you don’t catch a performance, it’s worth a guided tour just to gawp in awe at the turn-ofthe-century grandeur, all gilded mouldings, and elaborate frescoes.
Mercado Central’s traders have hawked their wares to locals and travelers since 1880. This eclectic and delightfully authentic bazaar is a maze of 200 shops and stalls selling spices, souvenirs, coffee, and traditional crafts. Dubbed the Beverley Hills of Costa Rica, the suburb of Escazu has high-end shopping galore at the Multiplaza mall. Shop Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren before visiting the magical Mariposario Butterfly Kingdom nearby to walk amongst more than 1,500 exotic butterflies.
SAVOR
Understandably, modern Costa Rican cuisine is heavily influenced by its former Spanish conquest, but throw in a variety of other cultural imprints, such as Colombian and Afro-Caribbean, and you have a rich melting pot of humble yet hearty flavors. Although you won’t find any Michelinstarred restaurants in Costa Rica, it delivers hard on soul-satisfying food.
Dining solely at your resort may be tempting, but venturing out to local eateries will reward you with a traditional taste of Costa Rica’s culinary heart. Stop by a local soda for a plate of Gallo Pinto. Meaning “spotted rooster,” this rice and bean creation is a national treasure served for breakfast with eggs and tortillas on the side. Of course, every eatery (and indeed Tico household) will claim to have the best Gallo Pinto, but La Fortuna’s Soda Víquez serves some of the most critically revered.
For a more refined take on Latin American flavors, head to Restaurante Silvestre in José for chef Santiago Fernández Benedetto’s seven-course tasting menu featuring Chira Island shrimp and pickled mussel pate. Marrying local and haute cuisine worlds with panache, Mercedes Noam Kostucki opens up her Guanacaste home to 12 diners for her three-hour, seven-course HiR Fine Dining experience. In the beauty of her garden, you can expect handsomely plated dishes crafted with fresh, local organic produce.

HOW TO GET A RARE HANDBAG
word S by ellen jone S
A RARE HERMÈS, MATTE
WHITE HIMALAYA NILOTICUS
CROCODILE BIRKIN WITH PALLADIUM HARDWARE
WORN BY LEXI FARGO IN PARIS. PHOTO BY EDWARD BERTHELOT, COURTESY OF GETTY IMAGES.
DOES THE THOUGHT OF OWNING A HERMÈS KELLY HIMALAYA MAKE YOU SALIVATE? OR PERHAPS CARESSING THE SMOOTH QUILTED LAMB OF A CHANEL 2.55 QUICKENS YOUR HEART? IF SO, YOU’RE IN EXCELLENT COMPANY. THE ALLURE OF RARE HANDBAGS IS AS INTOXICATING AS A TRIPLE SHOT ESPRESSO — WITH A SPRINKLING OF DESIGNER DUST ON TOP.
Sadly, getting your hands on these elusive beauties isn’t often as simple as swiping your card and walking out the door. Oh no. It’s often a high-stakes game with a few secret handshakes, whispered passwords, and minimum spends thrown in for good measure. But it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re after the latest limited edition, a rare vintage find, or the Holy Grail Birkin, here’s how to source your most sought-after handbag.
WHAT MAKES A BAG RARE?
When you’re wading through a sea of LV Neverfulls and Dior Book Totes on the streets, the allure of a handbag that’s a little more elusive becomes all the more enticing. It could be that hottest release you spotted in the pages of Vogue , a custom Lana Marks clutch in alligator leather and diamonds, or a one-off archival piece from a Chanel Métiers d’art collection. In short, brand, scarcity, and precious materials are all hallmarks that define a rare and ultra-covetable handbag. Unsurprisingly, they don’t come cheap.
Coming in at a cool $3.8M is Mouawad’s “1001 Nights” diamond purse. The most expensive bag on sale to the public, it contains 18-karat gold hardware and incorporates 4,517 diamonds: 105 yellows, 56 pinks, and 4,356 colorless with a combined weight of 381.92 carats — a sixth of a pound. This practically makes a Birkin look like pocket change, with entry-level Togo 25s costing around $11,400.
UP YOUR SA GAME
In designer boutiques, sales associates (SAs) are your secret weapon, so here’s where the charm offensive comes in. Becoming BFFs with your Hermès SA is essential if you want to play “the game.” Remember, your SA is the gatekeeper to that elusive Birkin.
Regular visits to the store, showing interest in new collections, registering your bag on your wishlist, and — most importantly — being polite and personable all go a long way. This relationshipbuilding is more effective than simply flashing your credit card around. If you want to be deemed worthy, it’s key to know your stuff. We’re talking sizes, styles, hardware types, and leathers.
What is the (admittedly controversial) Hermès minimum spend? There’s no set figure, but it can typically be 1:1 of your desired bag. So invest in pieces you genuinely love — and can afford. Opt for versatile, timeless accessories, such as silk scarves and classic leather bracelets, that can be wardrobe staples for years to come.
GET SOCIAL
Thanks to TikTok and Instagram, social media stylists have disrupted the personal shopping arena. No longer does one have to be ushered into a bouquet-strewn private suite of a department store, when your dream handbag can be just a few taps away.
Dominating the social sourcing universe are “fashion concierges” Jennifer Nisan of Frontrowlive and Gab Waller. Securing pieces for the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and the Kardashians, Australian-born, LA-based Gab’s investigative skills are Columbo-level, taking her to the top of the game.
“Social media has been the number one gamechanger for the fashion sourcing industry, explains Gab. “When I launched six years ago, running a fashion-sourcing business through social media wasn’t a concept that existed. It has been so exciting to see this industry transform over the past few years. The fact that a client can be scrolling Instagram, see something they like, and quickly share it to my Instagram page with the words ‘Gab please find this for me!’ — it truly does not get any easier than that. I strongly believe this is the future of shopping for luxury fashion.”
What are Gab’s hottest and hardest-to-find bags at the moment? “Previously, most of my requests for handbags were very logo-focused. Over the past year, I’ve witnessed a transition into more 'subtle elegance' styles. The Margaux bag by The Row is a great example of that. One of my biggest challenges is not necessarily locating the item but finding the quantity I need to locate. Most recently, it has been the Miu Miu crochet
pouch bag. Requests for this style have skyrocketed over summer.”
What does Waller advise for those on the hunt for a hard-to-find handbag? “Always be sure to turn on any out-of-stock notifications — you will be pleasantly surprised by how often a style may be restocked or a return is received. Vestiaire Collective is a great, reliable source for finding rare styles.”
PLAY THE PRE-LOVED MARKET
If the idea of playing the long game or minimum spend rule doesn’t appeal to you, consider dipping your toes into the pre-loved market. From Madison Avenue Couture to the aforementioned Vestiaire Collective, luxury resellers offer a treasure trove of rare, discontinued, and vintage handbags you won’t find in-store anywhere else.
LIKE THE RISE OF SOCIAL MEDIA SOURCERS, PRE-LOVED PLATFORMS HAVE SHAKEN UP THE LUXURY SHOPPING MARKET. “BY CHAMPIONING PRE-LOVED SHOPPING WE HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY DEMOCRATIZED ACCESS TO LUXURY ITEMS,” EXPLAINS A VESTIAIRE COLLECTIVE SPOKESPERSON. “WE MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR A BROADER AUDIENCE TO PURCHASE DESIRABLE FASHION ITEMS BY PROVIDING A CURATED SHOPPING EXPERIENCE WITH TRUSTED AUTHENTICATION.”
With over five million listed on the platform, Vestiaire Collective provides access to a curated selection of limited-edition and vintage pieces, making it a great place to find something truly special. In terms of what’s white-hot, what handbag brands are shoppers presently seeking out? “Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada are the most searched brands on Vestiaire Collective globally, while on the other hand, the three best-selling bags on the platform are the classic Chanel Timeless, the Balenciaga City, and the Longchamp Pliage. There seems to be a bigger appetite recently
for vintage pieces, as they sell 30% faster than contemporary ones.”
So, if you’re on the hunt for that 90s Chanel Classic Flap or Hermès Kelly ( sans minimum spend!) what are Vestiaire Collective’s tips for snaring that rare bag? “First, set up alerts for the specific brand or model you want, as rare items can sell quickly. Vestiaire Collective allows you to set alerts to notify you when matching items are listed or prices change. Second, once you’ve identified a model, carefully examine photos for brand-specific details. Compare these with the brand’s website to check details such as logo placement, labels, and hardware. Remember, vintage and contemporary pieces might differ slightly in typography or zippers. Authentic luxury items should show fine craftsmanship and quality materials. Finally, verify the seller’s credibility by checking their reviews, ratings, and
transaction history, and contact them for more information or price negotiation.”
So, whether you’re playing the long game or diving into the pre-loved pool, finding that exclusive handbag takes more than just luck. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, but with a bit of charm, strategy, and patience, that Hermès Kelly or 1960s Gucci horsebit might just be your next arm candy.
HOW TO SCORE A RARE HANDBAG:
• Build relationships with your sales associates in boutiques and department stores. Register your interest, and ask to join waiting lists.
• Shop the pre-loved market using trusted platforms that offer credible verification.
• Try auction houses. Sotheby’s, Christies, and Bonhams have frequent designer handbag auctions.
• Turn on restock notifications online at your desired designer’s website.
• Leverage personal stylists and shoppers on Instagram and TikTok.
• If you’re trying to keep to a budget, opt for a classic, timeless style that’s an investment piece and that won’t date.
• Move quickly. Exclusive bags sell fast, so be prepared to act quickly when you find the one you want.
• Be patient and persistent. Finding a rare handbag can take time. Set alerts, keep checking platforms, and be persistent in your search.

WITH BROKER SCOTT KENDALL
Scott Kendall blends unerring professional acumen with personal warmth, making the complex process of buying or selling a home not just manageable, but enjoyable as well. His journey in real estate began early in his teenage years, laying a brilliant foundation for a lifelong career. Armed with a master’s degree in real estate development and decades of experience with top firms, Scott has honed his ability to navigate complex markets and uncover hidden opportunities. His background in upscale developments, from historic Charleston to vibrant Nashville, has sharpened his eye for quality and potential.
Scott combines this profound industry knowledge with a client-centric approach. His passion for the Plateau’s natural beauty and the people who dwell within it is evident in every interaction with clients and colleagues. Scott is not just a real estate agent, but an enthusiastic advocate for life in our thriving community. His comprehensive understanding of the region — from its seasonal rhythms to its local events — allows him to offer invaluable insights to both buyers and sellers.
At Silver Creek, real estate isn’t just about transactions; it’s about helping people find joy and fulfillment. Scott delights in this approach, introducing clients to the Plateau’s hidden gems and helping them envision the potential of each property. His enthusiasm is contagious, whether discussing a property’s finer points or sharing his love for our region’s natural wonders. Scott’s goal isn’t simply to close deals, but to guide clients towards decisions that will enhance their lives, reflecting his belief that true happiness comes from helping others find theirs.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A REAL ESTATE BROKER?
When I was 12, I started working in construction during the summers. At age 16, I tracked down an out-of-state property owner about buying some handmade brick from their building that was just beginning to be demolished. She said the demolition contractor had just left town with her deposit, and she would give me the entire historic 1860s brick building if I would remove it from her property. That was a great adventure, and from that came my passion for real estate, historic preservation, and the art of building.
When I was 19, I gained my real estate sales license after hours as an undergraduate studying real estate and urban planning. For many years in my first job after graduate school, I had to learn to quickly assess and understand large markets for upscale real estate investment opportunities, and this helped me hone my skills to navigate complex markets, be creative, recognize patterns, and uncover unseen great opportunities, which translates directly here to help buyers on the Plateau.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT LED YOU TO WORK IN REAL ESTATE.
I was given the great privilege of earning my master’s degree in real estate development and investment from the top program in the U.S. at that time — under Dr. James A. Graaskamp at the University of Wisconsin. It was an incredible experience that shaped the way I approach real estate. Then, for much of my career, I worked for one of the country’s top real estate development and investment firms, specializing in upscale developments. Later, I was fortunate to work with The Beach Company in Historic Charleston. Most recently, I was a development partner with a small firm in dynamic Nashville, where we developed several award-winning hotels.
In 2020, Carolyn and I discovered the HighlandsCashiers mountain communities during a quick visit. On a whim, knowing very little about the area, we purchased a small second home here, and then unexpectedly, it turned out to be life-changing: one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH SILVER CREEK REAL ESTATE GROUP?
I met Jochen as a member of our club, The Chattooga Club. I was immediately impressed with the uniqueness of what he had created as this high-end, boutique, sophisticated, clientcentric, and precision-focused Silver Creek. We also shared many common interests. He was very interested in Carolyn’s high-end residential interior designs and featured her in several NC Living articles. At the same time, he helped me look closely at two different properties for a tiny, luxury European-style mountain design development. Through these interactions, I gleaned that we were highly aligned in our approach and focus, and so, earlier this year, I asked him if I could join his exceptional team at Silver Creek.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT SELLING REAL ESTATE, HOW DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING YOUR TIME?
Someone once said that if you follow your passion, work is not work, and that’s been my experience; I love what I do. But when I’m not focused on real estate, I also love spending time with friends and family, making new friends, and embarking on great experiences and adventures together. The Plateau is the perfect place for endless new experiences and adventures to grow, make discoveries, and share ideas. And then there is world travel together too. All these cherished times are when I feel most alive. Alongside this, books and music constantly nourish me. I’m unsure who said, “Everyone lives one life, but a person who reads lives 1,000 lives.”
WHAT GOALS ARE YOU WORKING TOWARD IN 2024?
Henri Matisse is one of my great heroes. Late in his life, he said that one ultimately learns that true happiness is helping others find theirs. This has been my experience. I thoroughly enjoy helping others discover the deep joy and lifetransforming fulfillment that The Plateau offers. In addition, throughout my career, I’ve focused on the social responsibility of preserving heritage and promoting a better life experience through excellence in design. I hope to contribute my skills
to help protect and preserve this special Highlands-Cashiers mountain area.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SEASON ON THE PLATEAU?
In addition to these lush mountains and rainforests, I would say that the powerful and dynamic four seasons are the essence of the unique life experience here. The endless events on the Plateau, for example, are concentrated around the times of seasonal transformation: the wonderfully serene and quiet winters, the bursting forth of new life in spring, the warm days and cool nights of summer, and the explosion of color and opening to vast views in autumn. It would be difficult to choose, so maybe my favorite is always the next beautiful season that’s coming.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE EVENTS OR FESTIVALS ON THE PLATEAU?
The exciting festive times when everyone’s families and friends pour in from all over the U.S. to celebrate great holidays, again generally around the times of spectacular season change: the grand celebrations of Memorial Day in the spring, July 4 in the summer, Labor Day in autumn, and Thanksgiving in winter.
WHAT ARE YOUR CLIENTS’ FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT LIFE ON THE PLATEAU?
Living in harmony with the powerful, sublime nature and its great wonders, and the discovery of seemingly endless new experiences here. The Plateau is the same as my daughter says of Paris: it is something different for everyone. And I hear all the time that it’s the beautiful spirit and character of the people here that make this such a special place.
OUTSIDE OF THE PLATEAU, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL?
Carolyn and I spend a lot of time in Europe. We particularly enjoy time in Paris, the South of France along the Mediterranean, and the Lakes Region of Northern Italy. I enjoy tagging along with Carolyn hunting for treasures in Paris and Italy, and she brings back a shipping container full of
European furnishings, art, and collectibles for her clients.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE STARTING THEIR SEARCH FOR A HOME ON THE PLATEAU?
Be open to going beyond your understanding of The Plateau. These mountains and communities are a vast, wondrous, complex, and sophisticated place, and you will discover areas you never could have dreamed of. There are hundreds of top-of-the-world and valley experiences here, for example. Come here and stay for three days and see the entire Plateau from Highlands to Cashiers with a broker whose whole focus is listening to you. There is a special home here for everyone.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE WORKING AS A BROKER?
It’s not about sales. My purpose and role are to listen to and educate the sophisticated client so that they can make their best decisions based on what lifestyle they want and what they love.
THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU IS A UNIQUE PLACE TO LIVE AND VISIT. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS OUR AREA’S GREATEST RESOURCE?
Beyond the extraordinary natural beauty and wonder here, without question, it’s the unique and fascinating people who are drawn to this small, rare jewel in the world.

PLENTY OF PEOPLE THINK THAT ONCE YOU FLY ON A PRIVATE JET, YOU’LL NEVER GO BACK TO COMMERCIAL, AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY. WITH STREAMLINED SECURITY, FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING, FEWER LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS, AND A RELAXED FLYING EXPERIENCE, PRIVATE AVIATION CAN MAKE EVEN FIRST-CLASS COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS FEEL LIKE FLYING COACH.
As the number of companies like NetJets, JSX, and Wheels Up has grown, more people are discovering the perks of private flying. Here’s a look at some of the latest private aviation trends convincing more people than ever to swear off commercial flights for good.
THE LATEST TRENDS IN PRIVATE AVIATION
HOW POPULAR IS PRIVATE FLYING?
While 2024 hasn’t been quite as good a year for private flights as 2023, it’s not far behind. In the first half of 2024, there were 610,000 charter flights in total. That’s a slight decline from last year when there were 645,000 charter flights over the same period.
The year 2023 was the second-best ever (behind 2022) in terms of hours in the sky for the private aviation industry, with 5,298,445 total private jet flight hours. Of that number, 2,812,849 flight hours were attributed to charter and fractional operator flights. This means that slightly more than half of all private flight hours are booked by those who don’t have personal jets, so you don’t have to own a plane to discover the joys of flying private!
THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE IS PARAMOUNT
When it comes to private flying, the journey really is as important as the destination. So it comes as no surprise that private charter companies maintain an unwavering focus on customer experience. The website for Ohio-based private aviation company NetJets is emblazoned with the tagline “Every Milestone. Elevated.” Wheels Up is equally pithy with “Simple. Accessible. Exceptional.” JSX has a succinct tagline of “Flying. We fixed it.” But the company takes it one step further and elaborates on the word “fixed” by adding, “No crowds. Dedicated hangars. Baggage included. Free drinks. Fast Wi-Fi. This is flying, designed for you.”
The phrasing each company uses is different, but their message is the same: luxury doesn’t have to be complicated. And as you’ve already discovered if you’ve flown private before, this mode of travel combines ultimate convenience with unparalleled comfort.
FLYING HAS NEVER BEEN SIMPLER
No one looks forward to going through airport security. But when you fly private, you get to skip the lines and the hassle. There’s no need to make sure all liquids are in TSA-approved bottles, and some flights offer no weight limit for your bags. On the day of your flight, you check in at a private hangar around 20 minutes before departure time and let the crew handle your bags. There’s
typically some kind of security screening, but it’s quick and individualized — and you don’t have to take off your shoes.
Most services can connect you with an airport taxi or a rental car at your destination if needed. And if there’s anything else you need or questions you have, you can always ask. Private aviation companies are about more than getting you from point A to point B. They want to ensure that your experience is a memorable one for all the right reasons.
YOU'LL ENJOY INCREDIBLE INFLIGHT AMENITIES
On many commercial flights, you’re lucky if you get a kid-sized bag of peanuts and a two-second pour of a can of soda. However, private charter companies offer an array of luxurious amenities that make every flight feel like a vacation in itself.
CURATED MENUS
On shorter flights, you can enjoy gourmet snacks and drinks. However, long-range flights often include chefcreated meals, a selection of wines, and more. Some services will even pre-stock your preferred drinks and snacks upon request.
ENTERTAINMENT AND WI-FI
Whether you want to watch a movie, call a friend, or just keep up with what’s happening on social media, you can do it on a private flight. Some companies go the extra mile. For instance, NetJets offers NetJets Connects Text & Talk, a program for long-range flights that lets you call and text as you normally would.
SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS
It’s hard to ever really get comfortable on an overnight flight. However, charter jets are equipped with sleeping arrangements that range from convertible divans to individual bedrooms. Regardless of the setup, most flights have all the blankets and pillows you could want.
BUSINESS ACCOMMODATIONS
Your private flight can be a time to relax and recharge. It also can be a time to catch up on work or even attend virtual meetings. Many private flights offer high-definition monitors, universal power outlets, and pull-out tabletops that make it possible to work in peace.
THE EXPERIENCE STARTS BEFORE THE FLIGHT
Flying private lets you skip the bustle of a busy airport, and fixed-base operators have been expanding beyond basic fueling and hangaring and into the world of luxury accommodations. Worldwide FBO networks such as Signature Aviation, which has a location at the Asheville Regional Airport, have grown exponentially. South Carolina’s Oconee County Regional Airport has its own independent FBO services, including a Wi-Fi-equipped lounge for pilots and passengers. You can relax in a rocking chair while taking in the vast Blue Ridge Mountains as you wait for your flight or squeeze in one last meeting in the executive conference room. If need be, you can also connect with executive transport, rental car, and shuttle services.
EVERYONE IS ACCOMMODATED
Traveling with kids and pets can be difficult on commercial flights. However, most private jet companies strive to meet the individual needs of all passengers — even the ones with four legs and the ones still learning their ABCs. Kid-friendly snacks and toys, special coloring books, and even cozy, plush blankets are all par for the course when you fly private. And if you want to
bring a furry friend along, they won’t be stuck in a cage in the cargo hold — they’ll be treated like the valuable family member they are.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES MAKE PRIVATE TRAVEL EASIER THAN EVER
Thanks to private jet companies’ new focus on streamlining online booking, the ultraconvenience of private travel might start before you even get on the plane. After all, most customers expect businesses to give them the option to do just about everything online. As new private jet companies continue to enter the market, they’ve had to find ways to stand out — and many have done so by overhauling their technologies.
Not only has this redesign made everything faster, but it has also introduced impressive new innovations. In the past, you may have had to call a charter company to finalize bookings or ask questions. Now, some booking systems use AI to give potential customers instant quotes.
Some booking systems offer an array of choices, allowing you to text representatives, use online chat, start a video conference, or even send video messages to connect. It can be a challenge
for a business to make any process both fast and individualized, but these new booking systems are helping charter companies achieve that difficult balance. The result? Booking your next private flight might be as easy as texting a friend or getting an Uber.
WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR PRIVATE AVIATION?
Private flights, whether on your own jet or via charter, have always been a superior alternative to commercial flights. However, the time has never been better to skip the TSA line and experience flying like never before. Charter companies are locked in a fierce battle to offer the best amenities, the fastest routes, and the most convenient booking options, and for passengers, that means even better things are on the horizon.

THE Hearth IS
WITH
MHK ARCHITECTURE AND SADLON & ASSOCIATES
FORGET THE CLICHÉ OF THE KITCHEN BEING THE SOUL OF THE HOUSE — IT’S THE FIREPLACE THAT TRULY SETS THE MOOD. FROM HERITAGE MARBLE MANTELS TO STYLISH SEE-THROUGH FLOATING UNITS, FIREPLACES BREATHE WARMTH, LIFE, AESTHETICS, AND SOULFULNESS INTO A HOME. THEY STRIKE THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN ALIGNING YOUR HOME’S ARCHITECTURE WITH ITS INTERIOR DESIGN AND DÉCOR.
As the winter days close in on the Plateau, nothing beats cozying up around a roaring fire. And when it comes to understanding how hearths add that special spark to North Carolina homes, no one does it better than the Highlands’ premier builders. Responsible for custom designing and building some of the Plateau’s finest abodes, they share their wisdom and insights on how to get fired up about magnificent mantels.
MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FLAME
Since the Stone Age, fire has united humanity, and thanks to Benjamin Franklin’s 1742 Pennsylvania stove, indoor fireplaces have been the focal point of homes for centuries. “Traditionally, fireplaces were a common gathering spot because that was the sole source of heat generation within the homes,” explains Brandy Marie Long, Highlands Studio Director of MHK Architecture. “Often, the location of the only fireplace in smaller dwelling units was indeed in the kitchen, which was the heating element for all cooking.”
Today, fireplaces go beyond heating and cooking. They anchor the entertainment areas of the home, and even when empty, they remain a striking focal point in any room. Choosing and installing the right one for your home is all about creating a gravitational pull that draws everyone to its flickering charm.
FOR TIM SADLON, FOUNDER OF CUSTOM HOME BUILDERS SADLON AND ASSOCIATES, FIREPLACES SHOULD BE STATEMENT PIECES THAT INFUSE COMFORT AND SOPHISTICATION, TRANSFORMING THE AMBIANCE OF AN ENTIRE SPACE. “A FIREPLACE SHOULD SEAMLESSLY COMBINE FUNCTIONALITY WITH ARTISTRY,” HE SAYS. “KEY ELEMENTS INCLUDE CAPTIVATING SCALE, PREMIUM MATERIALS, AND METICULOUS CRAFTSMANSHIP, ALL WHILE EFFORTLESSLY INTEGRATING INTO YOUR HOME’S OVERALL DESIGN.”
MODERN VS. TRADITIONAL: THE FIREPLACE FACE-OFF
Traditional fireplaces are venerable classics — think grand, stone-clad mantels and roaring hearths in mountain estates that evoke nostalgia and warmth. On the flip side, modern fireplaces are sleek and minimalist, featuring see-through glass and linear burners. How does one determine which type of hearth is the right fit for their home? By collaborating with architects like Edgens Herzog and Platt, Sadlon and Associates ensure each fireplace is specifically designed to elevate the space. “Each fireplace is unique,” says Sadlon. “It will showcase one-of-a-kind variations in stone shape, size, and color — no two are alike, so every fireplace reflects the home’s character and the homeowner’s vision.”
MHK Architecture, meanwhile, sticks with tradition but adds a contemporary twist. They use masonry fireplace kits from the likes of Isokern and Firerock, offering a classic look with modern ease of build and installation. “Regarding the aesthetics, we tailor the look of it based on the style of home and client’s needs,” explains Long. “For example, we have three-sided floating fireplaces, see-through units, modern linear burners, traditional tall versions, and even a free-standing fireplace.”
Where does the land lie when it comes to current trends? What are North Carolina homeowners opting for? “See-through fireplaces, which create a visual connection between two spaces, are increasingly popular,” enthuses Sadlon. “Porch and outdoor fireplaces are also in high demand, extending living areas into the great outdoors and creating inviting, cozy spaces amid beautiful mountain settings. Additionally, the use of precast limestone and artisanal scagliola
surrounds, such as those from Francois & Co., adds a sophisticated touch of elegance to designs.”
STONE, STEEL, AND STYLE
Choosing materials for a mantel is like picking the perfect accessory to complete an outfit. Traditionalists might opt for classic stones or bricks, which exude timeless elegance. Contemporary enthusiasts may favor materials such as steel or precast limestone, adding a cool, modern edge. Sadlon recommends selecting materials that complement your home’s architectural style and color palette.
His firm is a big fan of native local stones, such as granite, sourced from North Carolina or Tennessee. These not only enhance the fireplace’s aesthetic but also connect it to the home’s regional character. Think of it as the fireplace’s way of showing off its roots. “Cold-rolled steel accents provide a modern, industrial edge that contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the stone,” says Sadlon.
Utilizing natural, locally sourced materials is also environmentally conscious. “We balance luxury and sustainability by selecting natural, local materials,” asserts Sadlon. “Reclaimed wood mantels bring a sense of history and sustainability to our designs, while native stones minimize the environmental impact of transportation.”
THE FIREPLACE OF TOMORROW
The future of fireplaces is looking bright, with tech upgrades focusing on both functionality and sustainability. Imagine a fireplace that’s as efficient as it is beautiful — no more worrying about chimney sweeps or smoke alarms. Sadlon and Associates are excited about “engineering advancements that enhance the efficiency and performance of wood-burning fireplaces” and “lightweight fireplace options that offer the same aesthetic appeal as traditional designs but with greater flexibility.”
MHK Architecture is also at the forefront, highlighting environmentally conscious innovations like the Green Tech Catalytic Combustor Enhancement from Isokern, which “can reduce emissions by 80%.” It’s like giving your fireplace a green thumb — eco-friendly and still fabulous.
“WITH TIME AND TECHNOLOGY, WE HAVE EVOLVED TO AUTOMATED HOME FEATURES, AND FOR LUXURY HOMES, THE LIMITATIONS SEEM ENDLESS,” AFFIRMS LONG. “ONE THING THAT’S CONSISTENT, REGARDLESS OF TECHNOLOGY, IS THE UNMATCHED MANNER [IN] WHICH A REAL FLAME FROLICS — HEAT IS NOW A BYPRODUCT OF THE FIREPLACE, BUT IT IS STILL GREATLY APPRECIATED. THE AMBIANCE OF THE FLAMES CREATES A COMFORTABLE SETTING, REGARDLESS OF THE TEMPERATURE. WE HAVE FIREPLACES INCORPORATED INTO OUR HOME DESIGNS FROM THE BEACHES OF SOUTH FLORIDA ALL THE WAY UP TO THE HOMES WE DESIGN IN THE ROCKIES. SOME TRADITIONS WILL NEVER GO AWAY.”
FROM MOUNTAINSIDE TO POOLSIDE
When it comes to creating unforgettable fireplaces, some projects manage to be both striking and functional. Sadlon and Associates highlight a showstopper that perfectly captures the blend of architecture and nature. “One memorable project involved a stunning home and guest house with a shared courtyard,” recalls Sadlon. “In the heart of this space, we built a grand, standalone fireplace that serves as a functional heat source and a gathering place for family and friends.” Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this fireplace stands as the centerpiece of the home’s outdoor experience. “It really invites its owners to relax and enjoy the crisp mountain air, creating an ambiance that is both cozy and invigorating,” says Sadlon.
MHK encountered one of its most unique challenges in an unexpected setting: an indoor pool area. “We installed two vertical fireplace units at the edge of the indoor pool, with another vertical fireplace on the opposite side of the pool, where the sauna is located. This was the most challenging and unique one that we have done,” Jeremy Driskell, Greenville Studio Director of MHK Architecture noted, emphasizing the technical intricacies of balancing design with the specific demands of a poolside setting.
As the last log crackles and the embers fade, one thing remains clear: A well-designed fireplace isn’t just functional — it’s transformative. Whether it commands attention in a lakeside retreat or adds flair to a sleek modern space, it’s that unforgettable feature that leaves a lasting impression long after the flames die down.

So, whether you’re dreaming of a cherry blossom cruise through Japan or Greek island-hopping, Luminara and Ilma offer more than just voyages — they’re your gateways to a world where luxury knows no bounds.
These yachts aren’t just about where they take you but how they take you there: with the elegance of a five-star resort, the intimacy of a private yacht, and the kind of personalized service that leaves you feeling like royalty. So why settle for the ordinary when you can sail into the extraordinary? The seas are calling, and they’ve never looked so inviting.

SIMS VALLEY
At the turn of the 20th century, Willis and Laura Sims settled in a high valley with clear 40-mile vistas of the Great Smoky Mountains in the west. They built a rustic mountain home, lived off the land, and raised their six children here. Today, the valley is home to Sims Valley — a unique mountain community built in the same spirit as the Sims family homestead. It is a place of beauty, a place for families, and a place where residents live in harmony with the nature that surrounds them.
Located between the historic towns of Cullowhee and Cashiers, Sims Valley provides its homeowners with the feeling of living within a national park, rather than a resort community. Intersected by winding nature trails, designed by Trail Dynamics (who often designs for the National Park Service), Sims Valley offers many opportunities to let their residents’ spirits soar with the natural splendor that is housed within this one-
of-a-kind property. The peaceful sound of cascading waterfalls, the exotic fragrance of mountain laurel and native wildflowers, and the awe-inspiring sight of the Smokies blend together for an exceptional outdoor experience. Go shopping or dining in Cashiers or Highlands, explore Nantahala National Forest, take a boat ride on Lake Glenville, or enjoy the many amenities that Sims Valley has to offer.
The Sims family homestead still stands and now serves as a community gathering place. In fact, there is no shortage of places for the community to gather together at Sims Valley. The Mountain Clubhouse contains a fitness center and spa, swimming pool, large great room with fireplace, caterer’s kitchen, outdoor grill, and two outdoor fireplaces, paired with some of the most amazing views available at the property. The Mountain Chapel — located at the north end of the property — offers an open-air gathering place for Sims Valley residents to enjoy a picnic, a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace, or a breathtaking vista of the valley and the mountains beyond.

AT THE STUBBORN BULL
In the heart of Highlands, overlooking the gently meandering Mill Creek, a smart tapas bar blends Spanish zest with South American flair. Welcome to The Stubborn Bull. Since charging into Highlands in the summer of 2023, this beast of a bar has brought color and character to the plateau’s dining scene.
Serving up fine fusion dishes, incredible cocktails, and plenty of good vibes, this cool eatery is fast becoming a community favorite thanks to its irresistible sense of flavor and fun.
Female-owned and run, The Stubborn Bull was founded by Kristina “Kiki” Donikian and Clarissa Fawver. Together as the Stubborn Seeds Hospitality Group, they’ve injected a much-welcome global influence into the town’s culinary offerings. Why stubborn, you ask? For the duo, it’s about reclaiming the word and celebrating overcoming obstacles placed before them by “defying the odds and growing where we are planted.”
Inside, a 20-seater U-shaped bar beckons, as do cozy booths for intimate conversation. The Stubborn Bull’s décor blends tiles and timber in natural shades, striking a cool balance
between rustic charm and modern edge. When it comes to showing you a good time, the team has gone hard on playful touches. To start, the moment you step into The Stubborn Bull, you’re “greeted” by Consuela, the lobby-dwelling skeletal mascot, and then dazzled by pink neon letters by the kitchen proclaiming, “This is where the magic happens.” And indeed it is.
A FIESTA OF FLAVOR
Heading up The Stubborn Bull kitchen is Chef Gustavo Villota. Hailing from Ecuador, Gustavo worked with Kiki at Midpoint, her previous restaurant. Bringing his culinary expertise, his menu is a delightful mashup of Mediterranean, Spanish, and South American cuisine.
Brunches are bright and breezy, with crowd-pleasing tapas classics, such as crispy patatas bravas alongside a smoked
harissa aioli and fresh scallop and shrimp ceviche. Even the empanadas have a posh spin; they’re American Wagyu ribeye, no less. At dinner, Gustavo’s imagination runs a little wilder. Choose from rooted, land, or sea, with dishes like chorizo and melon salad, slowly braised short rib pinchos in a rich sherry wine glaze, or chargrilled octopus served over parsnip puree. Remember, at The Stubborn Bull, small plates aren’t just a meal — tapas is a journey through bold flavors and a ritual of shared social experiences.
RAISE YOUR GLASS
The Stubborn Bull’s large, U-shaped bar is the heartbeat of the joint. With no reservations needed, it fills up on a first-come, first-served basis, and boy, is it worth getting down early for. Masterful mixology with a Mexican twist dominates the cocktail menu; think tequila and mezcal-laden libations. Quirky signature sips include the Llama del Ray, a Peruvian brandy number with vanilla and bitters, alongside classic caipirinhas and sangrias.
Oenophiles, rejoice! The Stubborn Bull boasts one of Highlands’ largest collections of Spanish wines, with over 200 bottles spanning from Rioja to Mendoza and the rest of Europe and
the Americas’ finest estates. Tuck into a plate of marinated Spanish meatballs and complement it with a full-bodied Chianti Classico. Whether you’re a connoisseur or a casual sipper, there’s a glass — or magnum — with your name on it.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR EPICUREN ADVENTURES
The Stubborn Bull is all about community engagement, and this is reflected in its vibrant program of foodie events that tap into what locals love. Recent events include a wellness, health, and beauty social. Health-conscious local ladies found their bliss with specially prepared collagen mocktails, anti-inflammatory drinks, and healthy bites.
Meanwhile, in partnership with the HighlandsCashiers Center for Life Enrichment, guests enjoyed an incredible Around the World in Five Plates night where Chef Gustavo presented just that alongside five cocktail pairings handcrafted by CLE’s favorite mixologist, Carlton Chamblin.
For a more laid-back way to enjoy the flavors and spirit of The Stubborn Bull, swing by for Live Music Mondays at 5:30 p.m. Local artists such as Spalding McIntosh bring the house down while
you sip on your favorite cocktail and savor your seafood paella. It’s the perfect way to kick off your week with great food, great vibes, and the rhythm of Highlands’ best musicians.
A NEW STUBBORN CHAPTER
Also joining The Stubborn Bull in downtown Highlands is Donikian and Fawver’s latest culinary venture, The Stubborn Buddha on Main. Sounding the opposite of a fiery bull, will the Buddha incarnation be more zen in its vibe? Yes. But don’t be fooled by the calm exterior — The Stubborn Buddha on Main promises to deliver bold flavors, blending the best of Asian, Indian, and American cuisines. With a focus on taste and technique, this new spot is set to be all about bringing together diverse culinary traditions in a smart, harmonious setting.

SEAFOOD PAELLA FOR TWO
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup white wine
• 3 ½ cups seafood stock
• ½ cup olive oil
• 2 lobster tails * 6-8 ounces each (split in half)
• 12 colossal shrimp (peeled and deveined)
• ½ pound+ sea scallops
• 1 medium red onion (julienned)
• 1 large red bell pepper (diced, ¼ inch)
• 3-4 garlic cloves (minced)
• 2 medium tomatoes (peeled and diced)
• 1 ½ teaspoons sweet paprika
• 1 teaspoon Spanish saffron
• 2 cups Calaspara or Arborio rice
• Salt and pepper to taste
2. Add olive oil to a 12” shallow frying pan (cast iron, if you prefer) or 16” paella pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, season the seafood with salt and pepper and sear it, being careful not to cook it past the halfcooked point. Remove the seafood from the pan and set it aside.
3. Using the same oil and pan you seared the seafood in, add the onion and bell pepper to the pan and sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently.
4. Add the garlic and cook for about 2 minutes. Before it starts to brown, stir in the tomatoes, paprika, and a pinch of salt. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid from the tomatoes has evaporated.
5. Next, stir in the rice and cook for 1 minute.
6. Pour in 1 cup of the simmering wine and stock mixture, then reduce the heat to low. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring periodically and gradually adding the remaining liquid. Gently arrange the seafood in a circular pattern on top of the rice and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
7. Remove the paella from the heat and cover it for 5 minutes to let it rest. Uncover and serve from the pan with lemon wedges on the side.
LLAMA DEL RAY
• 1 ½ ounces Peruvian brandy
• ¼ ounce fresh lime
• ¼ ounce fresh lemon
• 5 ounces Madagascar vanilla bean syrup
• 1 egg white
GARNISH WITH:
• Cardamom bitters
• Maraschino cherry
• Orange peel
1. Bring the white wine and seafood stock to a simmer in a large saucepan over high heat and add the saffron. Reduce heat to a very low simmer. Let it continue to simmer while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs have undeniably transformed our lives and interactions. But families are rediscovering the magic of a simpler holiday season this winter on our picturesque Plateau. The time has come to unplug and reconnect with the heartwarming traditions that have defined our seasonal celebrations for generations. Why not embark on a journey back in time this holiday, embracing screen-free activities that foster creativity, strengthen bonds, and create lasting memories?
CRAFT
The heart of holiday cheer begins with transforming our homes into winter wonderlands. Start by reviving the charming tradition of crafting popcorn garlands. This simple yet engaging activity brings family members of all ages together, threading popcorn and cranberries into elegant strands that can adorn your Christmas tree or mantelpiece.
For a touch of sparkle, try creating sugar ornaments. You can easily make these delicate, crystal-like decorations by dissolving sugar in water and carefully pouring the mixture into cookie cutters or molds. As they dry, they form beautiful, translucent shapes that catch the light stunningly. Children will delight in watching the science of crystallization unfold before
their eyes, turning a simple kitchen ingredient into a magical decoration.
Handmade ornaments are another fantastic way to personalize your holiday decor while creating keepsakes you will treasure for years. The possibilities are endless, from painted pinecones and decorated salt dough shapes to intricately folded paper stars. Each ornament becomes a miniature work of art, a touchstone to the moment of its creation.
No home would be complete without a display of nutcrackers and ceramic winter villages. These charming figurines and miniature scenes tell their own stories, inviting viewers to imagine the tales behind each character and building. Arranging
these displays can become an annual family tradition, with each member contributing ideas to create a unique narrative landscape.
Of course, the centerpiece of holiday decorating is often the Christmas tree. Rather than rushing through the process, turn tree decorating into an event. Put on some festive music, prepare hot cocoa, and carefully place each ornament on the tree. Share the stories behind each decoration. Where were they found? What vacation, work trip, or moment of homeward longing do they recall? Who gave them or made them? Every ornament has a story waiting to be shared.
BAKE
The kitchen has always been the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. Baking cookies is a time-honored tradition that fills the house with irresistible aromas and brings everyone together. From classic sugar cookies to spicy gingerbread, mixing, rolling, cutting, and decorating with your loved ones will make each holiday confection taste all the better. And don’t worry about perfection — that slightly lopsided snowman or overly frosted star will likely become the most cherished cookie.
Why not expand on this tradition by hosting a festive cookie party? Invite friends and neighbors to bring their favorite holiday cookie recipes. Set up decorating stations with various frostings, sprinkles, and toppings. Not only does this create a fun social event, but it also allows for exchanging recipes and traditions among your community.
For a more ambitious culinary project, try creating a gingerbread house. Whether you use a kit or bake the pieces from scratch, assembling and decorating your confectionary cottage is a delightful challenge that can occupy an entire afternoon. Let your imagination run wild with candy decorations, icing icicles, and pretzel fences. The resulting edible architecture will serve as a centerpiece for your holiday gatherings.
ENGAGE
When the decorations are up and the baking is done, it’s time to play. Assembling puzzles is a time-honored tradition that encourages problemsolving and teamwork. Choose a puzzle with a festive theme or a challenging landscape, and set it up on a table where family members can stop by and add a piece or two throughout the season.
For those seeking a bit more excitement, break out the Jenga set. This game of physical and mental skill can lead to moments of high tension and uproarious laughter as the tower grows ever more precarious. It’s a perfect activity for all ages, fostering hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking.
As evening falls, gather around the fire. It’s the perfect setting for sharing stories, telling jokes and simply enjoying each other’s company to the merry crackle of the flames.
By embracing these screen-free traditions, families in the Highland-Cashiers Plateau are discovering benefits that extend far beyond the holiday season. These activities foster creativity, allowing children and adults to express themselves through various mediums. Whether crafting, baking, or storytelling, screen-free activities engage our minds in ways that passive screen time cannot match.
Moreover, these traditions strengthen family bonds. Working together on a project, whether decorating the Christmas tree or building a gingerbread house, creates shared experiences and inside jokes that become part of your family’s
unique story. These are the moments that your children will remember and potentially pass on to their own families one day. Continuing these traditions keeps our history alive and creates a sense of continuity in an ever-changing world. As the holiday season approaches and the snowflakes begin to fall, choose to unplug and engage. Come together to create, share, and celebrate in ways that truly embody the spirit of the season. After all, the true magic of the holidays isn’t found on a screen — it’s found in the laughter, the love, and the shared moments our screen-free traditions so beautifully foster.
