1 | The mental health centre of the future Master’s degree thesis 2017 | Turin, Trieste, Lecco | Polytechnic University of Turin | Link Skill set: Autocad, Revit, Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, Sketchup, V-Ray

Our master’s degree thesis is about the relationship that people with mental health problems have with architectural space and proposes the mental health centre of the future. Work structure The dissertation is made up of three sections: The first part is devoted to the story of the events that characterised the history of the psychiatric discipline. This research has served to build the fundamental knowledge, to be interwoven with the studies of the second part. “Towards a multi-sensory approach” is the title that sums up the theories and methodological approaches that we can use in the process of humanising health sites. The critical analysis of the data selected in those two parts of the work allowed us to come up with the third part titled “Experimenting a multidisciplinary project”, a project for a mental health centre of the future.

Cultural Context In the places that represented the psychiatric institution, it was an attempt to convey the various social problems within the same area, and to treat them in the same way according to the logic of power that Michel Foucault highlighted in his works. The experience we have encountered personally; going to see the conditions of multiple realities on the national territory, shows us that today there are still practices of exclusion and containment, violence and denial of the person. Design goal By studying the current system, we have identified in the mental health centre the milestone of the entire assistance network. As architects, we must identify new solutions, far from classic hospital proposals. A reasoned design shall consider the people’s needs who live in the centre, and it

can lead us to a sustainable outcome. Today designing by denying the “clear separation” between madness and normality is possible, with a joint action that involves all disciplines and experiences. The best practice to produce a health design is by thinking of the sick as subjects in society, and by considering their needs as rights. A project for Lecco Thanks to our research we have come to know Lecco’s situation. There, we were invited to propose the new Mental Health Centre of the city that will be built in the coming years. Personal growth This work allowed me to arrive a fuller awareness of the effects that architectural space has on those who frequent it. Proposing a real case allowed me to study and understand the regulatory requirements at a technical-architectural level. 7

Improvement is possible! The World Health Organization recognises the Triest experience as an example to be pursued and declared it the WHO Collaborating Cen-

ter. Hence, the situation in Trieste is the most significant and advanced point of reference in the sector. For this logic, we took the

study of the dynamics of Trieste as a reference and a yardstick, in relation with the organisation of mental health in Lecco.

2 | University Campus Einaudi Urban design Atelier 2017 | University campus Einaudi, Turin | Polytechnic University of Turin Skill set: Autocad, Rhinoceros, Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketchup, V-Ray

The project concerns the open spaces of the Einaudi University Campus designed by Norman Foster in Turin. Design methodology I chose to approach the topic in two phases. The first, formed by the preliminary phase of the investigation, consists of the acquisition of data useful for the knowledge of the context, regarding its morphological, constitutive and functional dimension. The data obtained from these surveys was directly related to the design choices. In the second phase, more strictly related to design type, many reflections emerged that led to the presentation of a first solution at the general masterplan scale, and then to the detailed one on specific areas of interest. The design process starts with the observation of the actual state; a rich photographic survey was the first

step in the cognitive path of the project area. This work made it possible to identify the primary nodes of the proposed space, highlighting some shortcomings as well as the positive elements present.

technologies, to ensure the acoustic and well-being of illumination for the users of the spaces designed.

The project area Crossing the different readings it was clear from the early stages of the work how space turned out to be composed of 3 macro-areas, each of which is characterised by its individuality. The three spaces are: - The Mai Street - The Dora Siera Street - The area, half public and half inside the Campus, which is tangent to Corso Regina Margherita. Personal development The project allowed me to extend my knowledge of lighting and acoustics design. Thanks to this work I had the opportunity of searching, studying and applying different 17

3 | Social housing Porta Nuova Design Atelier 2016 | Porta Nuova rail station, Turin | Polytechnic University of Turin Skill set: Autocad, Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, Dialux, Velux, Termom, Echo6

The project area is identified with space currently occupied by the Porta Nuova railway station in Turin. The city administration plans to dismiss 50% of the existing tracks and to maintain the remaining ones. We need to rethink the structure of this area, now central in the city fabric and of great historical importance, in morphological and functional terms. The site under consideration, with its large size and its elongated shape, determines a big split, dividing part of the city into two areas now connected in only two points. Design methodology After observing the context, we highlighted the existing road network and defined a grid that guided us in our work. By exploiting this base, we have been able to investigate many aspects, carrying forward ideas both on an urban scale, in the definition of the park, and at the urban planning level. According to the project, Tu-

rin finally enters the area of Porta Nuova through the aforementioned project. The shape of the buildings overlooking Via Sacchi guide the citizens towards the new public space. Functional mixité The building was designed to contain different functions, on the ground floor there are a series of shops that overlooks a broad pedestrian avenue, that forms the road axis of Via Sacchi, going upstairs the glazed facade also externally marks the areas that host offices. From the main front, on Via Sacchi, we can immediately notice the separation line between the functions described above and the residential part of the project. Passing from these activities to the apartments the facade cladding changes. From the glass, we move to the design of a facade made up of GRC panels, assembled with a regular rhythm, creating a facade free from structural constraints.

Personal development Working on this project allowed me to increase my knowledge concerning sustainable architecture. I took care when drafting the Itaca protocol, to verify the level of energy and environmental sustainability of the building. I followed firsthand the acoustic and thermal checks.

4 | The Valleys in Venaria Urban design atelier 2016 | Venaria Reale, Turin | Polytechnic University of Turin Skill set: Autocad, Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketchup, V-Ray, QGIS

The urban planning project focused on the municipal territory of Venaria Reale as a point of arrival; knowledge and marketing of the culture and typical products of the mountain area. Design goal The goal of the project is twofold. On the one hand, it is to make some areas of the municipality of Venaria Reale more alive, which are not presently visited much, and to improve the usability of those already widely used. On the other hand, we want to bring the mountain tradition to the use of a more extensive public space. Theme and strategies The rural landscape is an intricate and complex system, which includes production, cultural and environmental elements. It represents the fundamental meeting point between the environmental system and human activity, which manifests itself in different ways, depending on the con-

text and production techniques adopted, but always has a priority of achieving a state of equilibrium with the system and the environment in which it is placed. The vast area of the project has been studied at the level of the infrastructural system, and also the system of the anthropic and natural interstitial spaces. Through the intervention, the traffic flows will be redistributed. The squares located along the pedestrian streets will be redeveloped and refurbished by introducing new activities.

Personal development This project gave me the opportunity to study the dynamics of valorisation of an urban area. I set up and administered a questionnaire for a sample of 50 people living in the municipality, and from this I wrote a sociological report. The text, written under the guidance of an expert, was the basis for the decision-making phase, after which I followed the design up to the detail of some of the areas.

The primary objective is to increase tourist flows towards a specific territory system. The products of the region are the protagonists of this enhancement of local resources. The consumption of these products does not come only from functional needs, but also from other obligations, summarised in the values that these products express. 31

5 | Forte Portuense Three-year degree thesis 2015 | Forte Portuense, Rome | Young architects competitions and University of Trieste Skill set: Autocad, Illustrator, Photoshop, 3ds Max

The idea of tackling the subject of the entrenched camp in Rome, in particular, the recovery of the Forte Portuense, arises from the occasion of a competition organised by YAC Competitions in November 2014. Starting from the requests promoted by the statement given out, a project was defined in principle, presented in the competition in January 2015, which then formed the basis for the thesis work. Design methodology The design methodology chosen is divided into two phases. The first is the collection of data useful for the knowledge of the factory concerning its historical, formal-compositive, functional, metrological, structural, constructive and material dimensions. The data obtained from these analyses was related to the design choices, concerning the re-functionalization of the fort. In the second phase, the main actions were outlined,

both because of an overall restoration of the fort and also regarding specific actions concerning the new intended uses, taking care also to ensure the equipment’s facilities necessary for the technicians, respecting the whole identity of the product. The preventive study has allowed us to elaborate a project of respectful restoration and has enabled us to enhance both the history of the artefact and its relations with the context. The second phase of the work starts from the study of some cases similar to the contextual project, which has been catalogued in such a way as to make them comparable both with each other and with the Forte Portuense. Subsequently, a similar picture was drawn up that allowed us to identify, by checking the compatibility with the various areas and elements, the functions that will be possible to establish in the spaces and environments of

the Forte Portuense. The last phase of the work concerns the comparison between the state of affairs and the project status of a portion of the building corresponding to the elements of the dormitories and the sleepers, analysed in detail in the first part of the research. In this phase, the interventions necessary to transform existing environments into classrooms for a creative recycling centre and rooms for organising educational workshops have been defined on a detailed scale. Personal growth The choice of tackling this theme allowed me to enjoy a rich experience with the competition of ideas and at the same time extend my skills in the field of architectural restoration.

6 | Urban mediations Urban design atelier 2014 | Monfalcone, Gorizia | University of Trieste Skill set: Autocad, Illustrator, Photoshop

With its 27,800 inhabitants, Monfalcone is a small city but has the characteristics of a cross-border, industrial and multi-ethnic centre, that make it a complex urban reality, with a significant role within the North-East territories. Design path This project is the result of an articulated educational and research program, which proposes hypotheses of territorial reconfiguration for the territory of the Gorizia area, starting from today, relevant urban issues, are linked to ecology and environment, mobility and accessibility, to welfare and public spaces. The proposal alludes to transversal research perspectives, useful for rethinking the habitability of this and other contemporary territories. Issues that have brought out the problems of the Monfalcone area, but have also allowed the recognition of significant potential and resources on which to base new paths for retraining and regeneration.

Project objectives The intent was to reflect on the territory, to re-imagine its future, adopting a different perspective of investigation, and consistent with the paradigm shift in the field of urban planning, to observe Monfalcone and its territories from points of view as close as possible to the new questions posed by local contexts and inhabitants. The project highlights an alternative look at the contemporary territories and the opportunity to investigate the significant changes that involve it from a perspective that re-evaluates the agrarian space and recognises its importance for the city.

it was possible, with field research, to distinguish between different situations and conditions. Personal growth Thanks to this project I was able to carefully investigate the relationship between densely populated space and agricultural areas. This process gave me the opportunity of understanding the peculiarities of the different regions, and study a scenario of positive coexistence.

This has highlighted the need to read the territory of Monfalcone across different scales, to capture relationships, problems and potentialities of different areas and where to find forms of proximity between urban, rural, natural and agricultural dimensions. Starting from these readings, 39
