ap-Art Art ...

Concerning the Spiritual in Art , quotes from Wassily Kandinsky.

Just as each spoken word rouses an internal vibration, so does every object represented.” “There is no ‘must’ in art, because art is always free.”

“Inner necessity is the basis of both small and great problems in painting.”

“Color directly influences the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another purposively, to cause vibrations in the soul.” “It is evident therefore that color harmony must rest ultimately on purposive playing upon the human soul; this is one of the guiding principles of internal necessity.” “form is the external expression of inner meaning.” “Everything is at first a matter of feeling.”

“The final abstract expression of every art is number.” “Painting is an art; and art is not vague production, transitory and isolated, but a power which must be directed to the development and refinement of the human soul, to raising the triangle of the... “With cold eyes and indifferent mind the spectators regard the work. Connoissers admire the “skill” (as one admires a tightrope walker), enjoy the “quality of painting” (as one enjoys a pasty). But hungry souls go hungry away. The vulgar herd stroll through the rooms and pronounce the pictures “nice” or “splendid.” Those who could speak have said nothing, those who could hear have heard nothing.” “Only familiar objects will have a wholly superficial effect upon a moderately sensitive person.”

What is harmony?

ap-Art Mariangela

It’s a difficult question to answer. I do agree with your statements, but a malicious sprite is telling me that everything is subjective and influenced by fashion, time, taste, so it’s very difficult to find a definition of harmony that always fits! For example, is a Modigliani woman with her long neck harmonious? Is she harmonious even if she doesn’t respect the classic canons of beauty? And a Botero’s one? In my humble opinion, I believe that harmony is a very subjective concept. I think that harmony is a sort of fulfillment, when you reach the apotheosis and don’t desire anything anymore!

Silviacat:

Harmony is the perfect fusion between the geometric structure of formal composition and the emotionalexpressive aspect of a work. The balance that you don’t perceive with the eyes, but with the instinct.

Domenico P:

I still haven’t found harmony in my life, but, thinking about my work, harmony is a perfect match between an imaginary and the other.

Supersal:

Harmony in the web is the perfect balance between design and usability. Failing to focus on the message you want to communicate.

Anthropomorphica:

Harmony is when heart. mind and soul are all dancing to the same tune.

Sandra:

Harmony is when you create something and you’re okay and the others as well. Even the asymmetry is harmony.

Ohmydolls!:

In my opinion, harmony is an emotional and intimate balance, a sophisticated proportion, a careful arrangement of colors, shapes and sounds.

Danita art:

It’s what brings together your piece, using similar elements for a cohesive look.

Rustic Goth:

Come together or join.

Silvia Cataudella

Tell us about your artistic training. I studied decorative painting at the Art Institute of Syracuse in Sicily and then I graduated in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania. Did your passion show itself in your early age? I would say no... I began to attend the Art institute to follow my dad’s footprints, hoping to find easily a good job. The first year of the high school was really hard, but since the second year I achieved excellent results and began loving color above all!

Your Dad was a versatile Sicilian artist. What is his more valuable teaching? Did his example affect your style and your work? My dad has always been afraid of influencing me in any way: the most important thing for him was letting me free to make my own choices. We often discussed about art, comparing our points of view. I was usually asking his advice, but he rarely told me how to do something; he was used to encourage me to find my own way. He believed in me, appreciated my paintings and, knowing my shy and insecure personality, used to say that I was talented and that I shouldn’t underestimate myself. Our artistic styles are very different, nearly opposite: his works are rational, conceptual and based on an accurate technical study of the materials; he rarely used color; my work, on the other hand, is istinctive and very expressive, and color is the main element. Here the link of my father’s site. http://rosariocataudellla.blogspot.it/

If you could identify yourself with three famous artists, living or from the past, whom would you choose? I cannot identify myself with one definite artist, but my work was clearly influenced by Klimt, Modigliani, Munch.

What are the artistic fields that you love most? What’s your favorite technique? I love creativity in all its forms; I’m moody and have a lot of passions! So I usually begin a path, work obsessively and ceaselessly about something, but after a while I feel the urgency to change and go ahead. So I have tried different techniques: sculpture, digital art, graphics, engraving, creation of jewelry; at the moment I am working on collector’s dolls customization. However, my deepest love remains painting. At first I used oil colors: this is my favorite technique so far, but, unfortunately, it is uncomfortable and not suitable to the home environment; so now I use acrylics or pastels and crayons. “Smell” acrylic on canvas 140x70cm 2013.

What kind of subjects do you like to represent? What do you want to communicate through them? The female figure is the absolute protagonist in my paintings. I love the sensuality, mystery, sweetness and melancholy that the female body conveys. My painting is emotional, I want to arouse emotions: the most frightening thing for me is that the viewer stays indifferent or insensitive in front of my work. What is the main color in your art, and why? Maybe red: I love red because it’s intense and symbolizes passion. What does foster your creativity? Nothing in particular...I just grab a pencil when I want and start!

Are your works more classic or modern? It’s a difficult question to answer: I like believing that, even if they are figurative, hey are still modern.

“Eva” acrylic on canvas 140x70cm 2013.

Your biggest dream. I haven’t got big dreams: I just need a healthy life with the people I love. I have no ambitions of fame and success: I paint because it makes me feel good, even if, of course, I’m very pleased when I get appreciations!

Tell us about the creative procedures that you follow, from the idea to the practice. I follow a peculiar creative method that I found: I don’t mix colors on the palette, but directly on the canvas, spreading at first a bright color as a base, and then adding other nuances and blending. This is the reason why I love oil painting so much: oil has a really slow drying and so I can go on adding layers of colors for a long time. How important is playing in your life? I wish that playing had a very important role in my life, even more than it has now! I’d like to take life less seriously, like a little child (as the Italian poet Pascoli used to say). Only play can help us to face all the negative things that occurr in life, and can give us a true peacefulness... Painting, customizing dolls, drawing, all these activities are a game for me, a game that makes me feel really realy good!

“A bocca aperta” acrylic on wood 80x80 cm 2013.

The reaction to your work that impressed you most. Someone asked me, looking at one of my works depicting a girl with a pear: “Why a pear? Is it a new version of Snow White’s wicked witch?”. This question really made me laughing out loud... People are always looking for answers when you don’t need to make questions! Your favorite museum. The Tate Gallery in London. You gave life to the World ap-Art group and spend a lot of time to keep it running: why did you start this project, and which are your expectations about it? Most of the artists I met in my life were reluctant to share their experiences and their knowledge, conceiving any interest in their work as an intromission. I really do not agree with them, and I don’t believe in competition in art! Artists are always different from each other, so sharing ideas and visions can only be an advantage for them! I’ve always wanted to take part in an artistic group, to talk about art and compare opinions and works with other artists, but i didn’t like the circles I’ve joined. So I decided to create one of my own, made by artists whom I have chosen, and whom I respect. I’m now slowly trying to keep them engaged in the project, sharing with them my ideas and encouraging to participate and discuss, although I understand that is a difficult task. World Ap-Art is a virtual group made by people living in different parts of the world, who speak different languages. Many of them are really busy and have little time to devote to the group, but I’m confident that eventually we will become more and more united.
