FORUM 1: Architect's Act TOPIC: Is IDCP Registration necessary to establish an interior design consultancy practice? ABSTRACT: According to the Restrictions on unregistered interior designers stated that the said interior designers are not entitled to set up an interior design consultancy practice nor be associated with any relevance with the profession without endorsement from the Boards. Interior designers & their interior design consultancy practice have been around locally for a long time prior to the organization of MIID and have been successfully running business in reputation and safety if concerned. Do we need a centralized body to govern our profession? Is IDCP Registration necessary to establish an interior design consultancy practice? Does being a registered ID actually give you an upper hand over freelancers in the industry? Let’s discuss. Being a registered interior designer does not actually give you an upper hand, as each one of the interior designers have their own perspective on looking at this matter. It is also not necessary for interior designers to do IDCP registration to establish an interior design consultancy practice. There are advantages and disadvantages for both registered and unregistered interior designers. From my side, having to be a registered interior designer might do them good to have client to trust them fully thanks to the licenses they have. But then, having to pay all the licenses every year is quite an amount of money needed to be spent. Meanwhile, unregistered interior designers still can work well if they can plan well and do background research more on how being unregistered interior designers do other than designing, such as the financial. They need to prepare themselves with all the problems they might overcome and risks by being unregistered interior designers. And again, it is back to each of us as an interior designer, we need to think what might happened to us in the future if we choose either to be registered or unregistered interior designer when establishing an interior design consultancy practice.
FORUM 2: The Disabled (MS1184)
FORUM 3: Building Fire Safety Systems
TOPIC: Do all buildings need to include disabled-friendly spaces?
TOPIC: Building Fire Safety Systems
ABSTRACT: Disabled people should enjoy the available facilities in urban public places like other people in society. Accessibility and barrier-free environments are the fundamental needs for disabled people to achieve social equity by providing a more accessible design. To achieve people's social rights and peace, it is necessary to consider the experience of disabled people when using them when planning buildings and spaces. However, they often encounter architectural designs that are inconvenient for people with disabilities or unfriendly architectural designs.
ABSTRACT: The majority of buildings in Malaysia are compliant with the Uniform Building By-Laws of 1984 and have received a Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC). However, many people neglect to maintain their premises' safety systems on a regular basis, which presents an issue when a fire occurs. The maintenance work may be more expensive, but it is necessary to avoid a fire that would bring losses to the owners or users.
Does every building need to include buildings that are barrier-free to the community? Apart from Hospitals, which other buildings/spaces are crucial to imbed disabled access? As an interior designer, what thoughtful design can we implement to achieve a more disabled friendly building?
What is your opinion on our Fire Safety based on UBBL? Which regulations do you feel are most important and what would your recommendations be to further improve fire safety in buildings? Discuss. (You could also argue that the requirements are too stringent and suggest ways how we could reduce them to allow more creativity in building design).
-
-
Every building needs to include buildings that are barrier-free to the community. When all these things are achieved by having MS1184 as a must for every architect and interior designer, whether they are building commercial space, institutional, and more, the disabled community could enjoy as much as the other community does to seek for experiences. As an interior designer, to achieve a more disabled-friendly building, we can think of a design that could be used together by everyone including the disabled community. As an example, replacing a staircase with a ramp in the most possible way for accessibilities in the shophouses area and public space. Most of the shophouses have step stairs with a ramp on the corner or without any ramp at all. This is the most basic problem we can think of regarding a ramp for the disabled community.
Fire safety based on UBBL is for architects or interior designers to follow the minimum requirements that has been made. There are travel distances, compartment walls and floors, and staircases for internal building. Fire appliance access for the external building, which is the road outside the building for bomba to come through. These points are important for passive fire protection to minimize fire risk. Designers must design accordingly to the laws that have been made to ensure the safety of people inside the building in case there are fire.
without ramp
with ramp
Every building and public space will have different design aspects according to the use as well as the user. In this user, the disabled community must be included as well other than toddlers and elders. Including people with vision impairment, hard of hearing, physical disability, and more. As an interior designer, I have to change my way of thinking regarding users by including the disabled community.
Other than that, to make sure the building is ‘safe’ from fire, it will be better if there will be fire check every month or year. Such as, the materials used, electricity, and if the passive fire protection in the building is working well. It will be also nice to have a fire drill for users of the building every month. So, in case there are fire, they will know the way to the exits. This is where we draw the travel distance in plan drawings in case of fire. For example, if it’s a place of assembly or shop, in case there are fire during their open hours, employees could lead visitors to the exit doors steadily.

personal development week
After attending the six professional development week webinars I have registered for, I gained a lot of knowledge, tips, and tricks that I can use after graduating from Taylor’s University. I learned how fresh graduates considering financial literacy while job hunting from “Financial Literacy for Fresh Graduates” by CIMB. This includes salary where we should be realistic about the salary we receive as a fresh graduate and to know our own value such as our academic background and more. Then expenses where we should be dividing it into fixed and variable expenses. Next is budgeting, by having the rule 50/30/20, where we divide our wants and needs based on the rule. Where 50% of the salary should be used for needs, 30% used for wants, and 20% for saving. For the right attitude, we need to choose either to be sales role or support role in the role and lifestyle. Also, for expectation, we need to choose either we want to go for salary or prospects. The next webinar is “Building Your Career in the Digital Entertainment Industry” by Mr. Mufizal from Virtuos. He shares how he landed on this career due to the passion he had since he was young. Sharing his experiences in the world of video games, including what kind of impact does video games the community, how does video games development work, as well as explaining the video game production structure in a company. Mr. Mufizal shared the reason why video games are made, and stay is that they worked as a platform where introverts, the disabled, and people who have a hard time socializing can use for them to communicate and socialize with new people by playing games. I learnt a lot of new things about video games, and it was such an amazing experience I have by joining this webinar. By listening to "Keynote Address" by Mr. Jonathan Yabut, it makes me look back on my own self. I gain knowledge regarding what we can do after graduating including how to find a career or job hunting, how to choose a career, creating connections for both strong and weak ties, and important aspects on how to be successful. Other than that, he also told us to explore things out there that are not mostly used by the community. He shared that focusing on becoming which is the stretching zone is better than being which is the performance zone. In the performance zone, we are learning something new, new skills, new experiences and more. We are going out of our comfort zone where we go through trial and error through life. Overall, it is a very inspiring webinar from Mr. Jonathan that makes me get to know my own self, on what I want to be in the next few years.
From Mr. Ryan, the speaker of "Personal Branding & Landing Your Dream Job" by LinkedIn, he shared mostly about the LinkedIn platform itself. Introduction of LinkedIn, such as its mission and what is the use of this platform. Many features are available through LinkedIn that will bring advantages to job hunters. Other than that, he shared how we can make a ‘good’ profile and resumes through LinkedIn for us to make a connection with different kinds of job hunters and employers out there. Mr. Ryan also introduced Ruth Yong to share with us her experience on building a connection through LinkedIn. Another feature that he introduced is special resources by LinkedIn, where they provide classes for job seekers, and it will be only available until the last month of the year. This will help us to learn new skills for in-demand jobs, discover critical soft skills, and provide us with interview preparation and practice. There are a lot of things I can do through this platform starting from learning to creating a connection and landing a job. After attending the webinar "Curating Architecture CV & Portfolio” by Mr. Alif from VERITAS, I came to know the right way of making a good resume and portfolio for fresh graduates. It is a very knowledgeable webinar as he shares guidelines regarding resume, portfolio, as well as interview. From the resume guide, there are four rules to be followed which are to keep it simple, utilize the words in the job description, design your resume to the position, and focus on specific accomplishments. There are two types of portfolios which are resume portfolio and interview portfolio. For resume portfolios, it is recommended to have it in A4 size papers and do not just copy past things from the design board directly but to curate it more accordingly to this guide: 1) No online portfolio 2) Keep it short by showing your greatest hits 3) Focus on what you did by outline your role 4) Keep it simple 5) Never send a resume without a sample portfolio 6) Visual composition is important as it showcases your eye for composition 7) Reduce the file size by having a maximum of 10MB For interview portfolios, it is recommended to have it in A3 size papers and again to curate it accordingly and extract the most important elements. These are the interview portfolio guide: 1) Best student work to be at the front 2) Second best work to be at the end – The reason is for the interviewer to see all through your projects until the end page of the portfolio. 3) Focus on what you did by outline your role 4) Student portfolio first and then your work experience 5) Visual composition is important as it showcases your eye for composition 6) Be prepared to present the best and second-best portfolio
There are four things we are acquired to know before going on for an interview with the company, this includes: 1) Know your audiences 2) Anticipate the interview questions 3) Dress accordingly After going on for an interview, do not forget to follow up with an email to say thank you and to appeal that you are interested in joining and working in the company. The last webinar I attended was "Careers in FMCG: Commercial & Manufacturing” by Mondelez. With three speakers from different departments in the company, firstly Ms. Tan Chia Yee sharing her personal experience and career development in marketing, secondly Mr. Jay Chin sharing his personal experience and career development in marketing, and lastly Mr. Beh Shin Deh sharing his personal experience and career development in the supply chain. The conclusion I can take from their journey throughout their career in Mondelez is to grab every opportunity for us to learn and grow, being confident and be ourselves, and be ready to own up responsibilities. Also being able to reflect on ourselves every time we make mistakes and how we overcome that problem. To not be afraid to start something new as we are working, because while working we are in the process of learning as well. In conclusion, in all the webinars I have registered for and attended, I learned new things and insights, getting to know other people personal experiences, career development, and their reflections. By listening to all these webinars, the things that they have delivered will be very helpful for me to find my own career development starting from now.
reflections
Going through this module for months, I gained both information and knowledge regarding acts, rules, and by-laws. From the first assignment, I learned about architect acts, architect rules, green building index, MS 1184, universal building by law regarding lighting, passive and active fire. By doing the first assignment, I could understand more about other things that we interior designers have to consider other than designing for comfort and needs. For the second assignment, which is the three forums that have been held. Our class could have a discussion together as well as share each of our own opinions with the other. By doing that, I got to know things I could not think of and meet someone who has the same opinion as mine. Other than that, one of the assignments which is the third assignment challenges us to form a design practice. By doing this assignment, I get to know the basic things about how we can open up a design firm as an interior designer. It’s not as easy as I thought before I got to know all these things. We have to consider what kind of company we would like to establish, whether it’s a sole proprietorship, partnership, or body corporate. There are also several things that are needed to be taken into consideration for a company to have a big profit. For the final assignment, we are needed to apply our knowledge from the first assignment to our own individual design project. It’s like doing a drawing of a building that shall be submitted by a principal submitting person or submitting person. By doing this, I got to know what is right and wrong from my building, what is missing and what is there already according to the UBBL. This also leads us to check our building properly according to the GBI. Whether we are applying the universal design based on MS 1184. Besides, I also got to know about the contract documents needed for a building. Furthermore, by doing this assignment, I would know the basic things on what do we need to do when we land in this field directly. In conclusion, there are so many things I learned and could apply them directly in the field. All of these things are new to me this semester except for some by-laws in UBBL and I’m willing to learn more about this in the future as this will be important and useful for us interior designers.
