In perspective the space diverges towards the end, which means I have to consider the part size plays in my design

An important part of the space is the included greenery

Another part that I like is how the lines direct to a building focal point, which works for the symmetry of the space

1958, cattle trading ended Today, romford market after 797 years serves as a focal point of the town

The fact the space already has a large and semi-interesting historical context means there will always be a certain and guaranteed audience that it attracts.

However, if I could design a modern and visually attractive space while still preserving the nature of the site, I could introduce a new audience that stops the market from being a glorified car park.

Conceptual idea

In order to get ideas, I drew a large irregular shape and developed it very simply over the space

This plan idea helps me realise I want to keep the pavilion structure quite irregular, which works to contrasts with the rigid straight lines the site is made up of.

Natural and organic architecture

The blue blocks are a physical representation of the street

The wire acts as a interesting attraction, that could bring people in for reasons other than basic shopping

To get a better idea of how the structure would fit in the actual space, I did a drawing of it and inserted it onto a picture of the space

Model Idea 1

The Boolean Operator

Inspiration- Bubbles

I like the shape of bubbles and the circular shape and the almost iridescent nature of the colour.

I drew these bubbles to get a sense of the colours involved

I was inspired by the overlapping pattern they make and the manufactured organic shape

Simple version of slice form

This model was made by cutting slots into the circles and then slotting them together in random forms to generate ideas

I also coloured in the circles to make it more visually interesting

Although this could be a cool idea for the space it doesn’t allow much room for practicality. It doesn’t fit and overall is quite chunky

However, I will take the variety in colours and circular shapes into consideration for further development

Secondary research- Jetlag books Pop up store

The pop-up bookstore is located in a mall. It is described as a cloud like structure and was installed to bring attention to the lack of physical bookstores in Beijing

The main reason behind the idea was to attract the attention of consumers

Context:

Magazine stores in Beijing are disappearing because people are buying fewer magazines and hard copy books, and now prefer online reading

The form of the roof and counters is reminiscent of clouds.

In this version of the model, I changed the circular shapes to squares to see if it would fit my vision better. Although visually more interesting, I think it was a bit harsh for the nature of the space; a warm community shopping/trading space
