Artist research: Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch artist famous for his abstract works, birthed from the influence of cubism, which he did to point of abstraction.

Mondrian believed in reducing forms to their most basic elements. The basic composition reveals ‘the fundamental and opposing forces of the universe’

This piece was based on Mondrians passion for the Charleston, which like his artwork rejected what was culturally expected

A lot of his works consisted of horizontal and vertical black lines on a white background. He coined this as ‘neo-plasticism’

Secondary research – kiosk k67

The k67 is a kiosk design created in 1966 by Slovenian architect Saša J. Mächtig

These were first constructed in the 1960s in Yugoslavia and designed by Slovenian architect Sasa J. Machtig. They were made of steel, poly fibre and glass and had a futuristic modular feel to them. The stalls were intended to stand alone or be used alongside other ones. During the 80/90s government told the influx of vendors to other close down or operate out of the k67.

Aspects of the brief: designing a temporary pop-up shop structure

Pop up shops benefit retailers as well as consumers. E.g. Shops with an online-only presence can explore a physical space and materialise their target market

This is a pop up for online furniture brand ‘Wayfair’. A strength of this design is how it reflects the theme of the brand; home living and quirky furniture.

This a pop up for digital camera brand go pro. I like the fact that the structure bears resemblance to the actual camera. And the space it takes up makes sense for what is being sold. Additionally, most of the temporary shop builds for this brand reflect the shape of the products

A possible weakness is the lack of space in proportion to what they sell. You can’t fully process or take in what is being sold due to size of space

They are cost efficient and will likely be the biggest part of a budget. It also encourages customers through FOMO, as the knowledge that it’s temporary generates buzz and motivation to buy limited-time items etc.

Secondary research- COS pop up store Milan

This terminal uses the same origami folding technique for the inner ceiling to walls.

This was a circular seating area located on a university campus.

It is more interesting than a normal bench and regarding location context ( an art site) It fits in more cohesively.

Using the circular pieces from my original pavilion idea, I generated circular market stall ideas

Second option: Curved panels
