“We can’t expect the world to get better by itself.”

What kind of meaningful work do you want to do in the world? Will you enter or change a career path? At Simmons, we pledge to engage you in imagining and preparing for your future.

In the academic programs in the Gwen Ifill School of Media, Humanities, and Social Sciences, we embrace modes of expression as we record and interpret human experience. We analyze and seek to understand our world through the intersecting lenses of language, history, narrative, art, film, and contemporary media.

A Simmons graduate education combines the cross-disciplinary with the cross-professional to offer innovative curricular experiences that help prepare you for to address today’s real-world challenges. Social justice and leadership are essential components woven throughout the coursework we offer.

Children’s Literature courses in fantasy, realism, the picturebook, and other genres complement courses in children’s book publishing, the child in fiction, and social justice. Critical analysis deepens engagement with published works and prepares students for future research, practice, or creative writing. Our curriculum integrates literary studies, study of art and text, and childhood studies to inform the disciplines and practices in literature for young people.

Our Gender and Cultural Studies students work to understand the power of culture to shape identities, lived experiences, inequities, and opportunities. They work across disciplines and draw on a range of faculty expertise from across the University.

Students in our History programs study the past to understand today’s diverse and complex world. Coursework analyzes material culture and the nature of memory.

Public Policy programs provide students with an interdisciplinary understanding of complex, ever-evolving societal problems and their potential solutions. They learn analytical skills and data-driven research ability to help them better serve local, national, and global communities.

Through these liberal arts programs, we interrogate the given, helping to create liberally educated critical thinkers who can bridge theory and practice in transformative ways.

I wrote one of the books that I sold during my time in the children’s literature MA/MFA program. I was given the opportunity to work one-on-one with amazing publishing professionals during the mentorship program. Those mentors gave me key advice on how to navigate the publishing world and skills that have been critical in how I approach my work.”

Many of my students identify as feminists, though their interest lies more in gender identity. Queer theory and critical race studies have done a lot to add to this conversation, regarding what our students are experiencing now.”

I believe that the personal is political, and my life experiences reflect larger conversations about our society. I wanted to take the knowledge that I already had and expand on it. I love to learn and challenge myself with different perspectives. I believed Simmons would provide that for me— and I was right!”

I love the moments of discovery—when people feel the magic of historical records. I take great pleasure in revealing how history is a lot weirder, crazier, and gayer than it was taught in high school history class.”

My internship was exciting because I got to directly apply what I was learning in classes by researching policies that could actually be passed and implemented. As a result of the pandemic, the services public schools provide have expanded greatly. It was rewarding to work within a district that was employing every resource possible to offer students and families the support they needed.”
