SOLAR FILTER DOME SIMONE APPOLLONI
Thema 1: Design Concept
Located in the Jordan Valley, the Women’s Centre will provide shelter and a welcoming space for Palestinian women to gather and discuss important issues. The Domes skin has been specifically designed to optimise climatic conditions within. The openings follow the shape of the dome, which is moulded to the solar radiation analysis, changing in density in specific areas. During the summer, the angle of the sun and the angle of the openings means that very little direct sun radiation penetrates through the exterior dome, creating a comfortable interior with dispersed natural light. In winter, the sun enters more directly through some of the openings and creates more warmth. Throughout the entire design, solutions such as these have been found to optimize the space within the centre, for a comfortable and welcoming environment.
Thema 2: Geometry
The Interior Domes are shaped and arranged to create maximum shade when within the structure. The Exterior Dome is pushed to towards the sun so that more light will enter the interior. However, the openings in this area are much more denser so that less direct light and heat enters. The Openings are dispersed from one point, as shown. this point has been chosen as it lets less direct insulation during summer and more during winter. Thema 3: Parametric definition
More than four thousand holes on the dome‘s surface are shaped parametrically, each one has diffrent dimension and direction. The texture created by circle packing has been made before on a flat surface controlling parameters of density around some points, dimension, numbers of the circles and a random factor in order Progression of the plan from brief to completed project.

to look more natural, than spread it afterwards on the dome with the mapping surface component. The curves of the texture are extruded to one point intersecting the dome‘s intradoss and extradoss. At the end the holes‘ edge curves obtained are used to make loft surfaces which are the final geometries of the openings.

SHAPING OPENINGS
The geometry of the design was created using grasshopper and various plugins in order to control it parametrically. Additionally the several openings are shaped controlling parameters of density around some points, dimension and numbers of the circles.
