Column Grid
This layout is using a Column Grid structure which is purely based on columns and is very simple. This grid is more rational and logical than some of the others.
Hierarchical Grid
Hierarchical Grids are mostly used on websites and newspapers and they work by leading your eyes to certain things on the page in a particular order.

Making The Grid
Making The Grid
As part of making the grid we took some photographs to demonstrate each type of grid, as shown on the previous pages. Once we had printed out our photographs we needed to pick the one that we wanted to use for our grid and then use the measurements from that to recreate the main parts of the picture with black card on a piece of white paper. We then needed to reflect so that we could make a double page spread. Once we made the grid we started trying out different types of layouts within the grid so that we could get use to our grid and learn how we should be layout out our work on the spreads. You can see this on the next page.

Letterpress Workshop
During the letterpress workshop we were told to draw up different types of grids so that we print them. We then decided who’s work would go together because we was going to over print on the same piece of paper three times using yellow first follow by magenta and then cyan. We printed enough yellows of the first run so that everyone could have one and there was a few left over in case of any mistakes because we have to wash up the letterpress between every colour. By the end everyone’s work was on these pieces of paper over printed and this was the outcome. I think that this has worked quite considering that no-one knew how it would turn out.

Taxonomy of Sweets: Colour
As an introduction to Taxonomy we was given a tube of pix and mix we was told to categories them using Location, Alphabetical, Time, Category, Hierarchy (LATCH). The image that is show below is of the way that we grouped the sweets into colour.
Taxonomy of Sweets: Size
As you can see from the photograph, we have put into order of size starting with the biggest and getting smaller. We have only used one of each sweet so that it would make the order much clearer. I think that they look very good next to each other and it is nice to see the contrast in colours and shades.
Taxonomy of Sweets: Scattercharts
I have used scatter charts which show the way that the sweets can be put into particular groups and so that you can see exactly were each group lie at a glance. It is not as easy as i thought that it would be to put them into groups of colour pretty hard because you became unsure where to put colours that were not on any of the axis.

Visual Grammer Workshop Number One: Colour Exercise The workshop today was about learning the key skills that we will need to use for our work throughout the year. The skills that we was learning about and working on are colour, distribution, grouping, composition with line, structure, scale and proportion. In preparation for this workshop we were asked to cut different coloured paper to various sizes. At the beginning of the day I didn’t know what to expect but as I got started I felt quite comfortable with the work and I enjoyed it a lot, the two exercises that I like the most are the colour and the grouping exercises. In this first exercise we were learning about colour and the best way that it can be used to improve a piece of work. Colours can also work against a piece if you do not use them correctly. For example if you use grey as a background then you should try not to use white for the text or vice versa because it might look good on the screen but once it has been printed it can be very hard to see.
Especially from far distances as grey as white as quite similar to each other, it can depend on the shade of grey that you have decided to use as different shades can have very different affects. We also tried yellow on white next to yellow on black on the other side of the page so that we could see the difference that it creates. I think that the yellow on black stand out very well on the black because they are at the opposite end of the spectrum. Obviously yellow on white doesn’t work as well because they are quite close in colour and when you look at that for a while it starts to strain your eyes. Whenever i look at the yellow on white one it makes me think of an egg. Even something so simple as to squares of different colours can create and image in another person mind so we should keep that in mind when we designing something. We should think what else it can be seen as from different eyes. The final colours that we tried were blue on white with blue on black next to
it on a grey background. I think that the one that has blue on white is a nice combination but if the blue had been a bit lighter like a baby blue I don’t think that it would have worked so well. I don’t think that the blue on black works very well because they are both very dark but it is a mistake that people often make because they think it stands out on the computer screen but when you see it in front of you on paper you can see that it just doesn’t work. I think that this exercise has been very useful because it helps me to think about the colours that I am using in my work and if they will create a good piece of work and get my message across in the right way. I realised that you have to be very careful with the colour if you want to attract a particular audience as different colours mean different things in different cultures and countries. So it’s not as simple as saying ‘I picked it because I liked it’ you need to think about the reasoning behind it.
Visual Grammer Workshop Number One: Colour Exercise
I have used the measurements that we used during the lesson to recreate these three pieces and I think that they have worked quite well. As they have still captured all the little elements that I liked during the lesson especially on the first one. I like the way that the grey and the white connects so it make it feel like there is a shadow effect going on another thing that i like is the way that the grey square that is under the white square looks lighter then the on top even though they are defiantly the same colour because I checked just to make sure I didn’t make a mistake. For the first image we needed to cut strips of black card to the height of 150mm but of dif-

ferent thicknesses. We then had to use three thin width strips e.g. 5mm, three medium width strips e.g. 10mm and three thick width strips e.g. 15mm. We then arrange them vertically on a 150mm by 150mm square making sure that they was aligned at the top and the bottom but they could be placed in any order that we wanted. In the second image we used exactly the same thicknesses and place them in the same place as the first image but we had to consider what techniques to use to emphasise the lines
by the thickness without changing the order that they have been placed in. This was done by cutting each of the thicknesses to different lengths so that each one of the thicknesses match each other and you can begin to see each strip more clearly as it starts to make a nice design. While I was doing this is the workshop I was thinking about Bridget Riley and her optical artwork. I like the way that she uses lines and squares to create images that look so complex, I like these images quite alot.
Visual Grammer Workshop Number Two: Pattern Exercise
For these pieces we drew up a grid 150mm by 150mm and we divided that up in to nine squares. In each of those nine squares we then added a rectangle or square of our choosing which could be any of the sizes that we had previously cut to create a pattern. I think that these exercises were very useful because they allowed you to think on your feet and make decision more quickly as I usually spend a lot of time deciding on how I want to present my work.
Visual Grammer Workshop Number Two: Sizes Exercise
Once again we had to draw out the 150mm by 150mm grid and then we had to place one of the three different sizes of black paper (30mm x 30mm, 60mm x 60mm and 90mm x 90mm) inside the grid. Although we could use them anywhere in the grid we were told that we should not order the squares in the order of size. So I chose to but the two biggest squares at either end of the grid with the smallest one in the middle and I think that this made a nice design.
For the second part of this exercise we had to order the black squares inside the grid from smallest to the largest and then from largest to smallest, making sure that we used a different arrangement for each one. I done it fairly simply during the workshop but when I got home I wanted to add and make it a bit more complex. So I used all of the measurement that I had used previously in the workshop for the small to large and the large to small. and I began to put those measurement
into InDesign to recreate the design. Once I had all the measurements in the computer I then began to change a rearrange the way that the item that the both of them interact with each other. I resized them both to a much smaller size, copied and rotated them. I then had four squares which I could place inside of 150mm by 150mm grid and I made a whole new design, so that when you look at it from different angles you can see it in a different perspective.
Visual Grammer Workshop Number Two: Sizes Exercise
I think that they work very together because they got from small to large and back to small again from corner to corner. I don’t think that it works as well the other way because the small squares don’t match up with each other as well as the bigger ones do. Although I think that it still makes an interesting composition and I am happy that I tried it because if I didn’t I would never have known. Overall I think that this exercise was very useful.
Visual Grammer Workshop Number Two: Sizes Exercise
After that we were told to use both black and white squares of the different sizes and arrange them in any way that we liked to create a pattern. it didn’t matter the order that we put them into and we could overlap or just place them directly on top of each other. I liked using black and white more than I did when we was just using black paper because it allow more flexibility to create more designs that were eye catching. At first I wasn’t sure whether I liked the first one that I
done but it grew on me especially when I got home because I adapted them by copy, resizing and rotating them, as I had previously done with the black squares. They look a good deal stronger when they are grouped together than when they are on their own. I like the way that the little simple touches can create such a nice piece of work. It would be hard to create something like this if you was trying but it is so much easy to create it without thinking.

This exercise was about recreating the alphabet using very simple lines and forms. We started with the lowercase and moved onto the uppercase.
True Or False?
Silverback Monkey
Silverback Monkey I am not sure whether this image is true or false because it looks as if it has been set up because it is not something that you would usually find a monkey doing. The image looks like it could have been doctored to look like this. When I first say this I thought is that a really small monkey and is that a really big remote. I think that this lesson has taught me to be really cautious about what I do and don’t believe.
Beyonce
Smartcar Vs Limo
Smartcar Vs Limo I think that this image is true because even without the picture you can see that there is naturally a huge size difference between the two vehicles. If anything is false in the photograph I think that maybe the limo in the photograph could have been edited a bit so that it looks longer then it really is. I like the contrast that it shows and the reason that I picked this photograph is because I really like the way that it has been taken.
Beyonce The reason why I would say that this image of Beyonce is false is because she doesn’t look very natural at all. In the image her face looks a different colour to the rest of the body. The image looks as if it has had a lot of work done on it. As the face is so unnatural and with all of the retouching of photographs now a days I don’t know how I could possibly believe this image. Also it also was not taken from a reliable newspaper.
Typography Workshop One: Poster Exercise Part One
During this workshop we was discovering different way that we could demonstrate what, when, who and where. At part of this first exercise we had we had all of the text the same size, same font and the same weight and the only thing that we could change on the page is where we place each item because all of the pieces of paper that we was using for the design were the same size as well. A good way of making something stand out in this situation is to group everything except the thing that you want to stand out. By placing it higher than everything else could also be a good way of doing this.

For this exercise we were using the bold font to add emphasis to the item that was meant to catch the eye first.

I think that this last exercise was the best one because we had to choose two different font sizes of once again the same font and the same weight. This time by using the font size we needed to create images using what, when, who and where. I think that these exercises were very useful because it helps you not to over think an idea, by changing something as simple as the size weight or position you can create a whole new image or design.

I wanted to base these pages on the city about different elements that I saw throughout the city when I was taking some photographs. On this page I have tried to demonstrate how a lot of the structures in the city seem to follow the same pattern. I think that as you become used to it you notice it a lot less.

Narrative Of The City
For these images I was trying to show the way that the city is always changing. I think that it could be quite interesting to watch a particular area over a period of time. For example if everyone moved there bike at the same time then that area would look very different. I think that images like this could create a nice series.

Proximity: Sensors
Movement Sensor I like using this sensor it was the one that i could play with for the longest time and not get bored with it, it could detect even the smallest movement. The more intense that the movement was the more red that the circle became whilst becoming larger. The less intense that the movement and further away you was from the sensor the circle became green and smaller.
Photo Resister This sensor is sensitive to light and when we was trying it out the darker the place that it was put into the bigger the circle went and it stayed red. As it started to get into lighter places it slowly changed to green and it became much smaller. I like the way that it work and the reactions that it would create on the screen, I thought that this was quite interesting.
Proximity: Working With Arduino
For this experiment we set up the Arduino and input the instructions that we wanted to follow. This worked well as when the blew into the tube the light would stay on for as long as we was blowing though the tube. We wanted this to work so that if you blew into the tube the light would stay on without continuous blowing of the tube. We tried adding “speech mark” instead of “digital write (ledpin, high)” as a way of cancelling out this command.Once again we edited the formula and this time the light would stay on all the time but flashing once you started blowing in the tube the light would stay on solid for as long as you are blowing in the tube. We then made the delay on the formula longer. At first the number that we added was too long so the formula didn’t work but we shorten the delay to ‘1000’. We then could blow once and the light would stay on for about sixteen minutes.
Proximity: Working With Arduino
After this we then wanted to try something that was a bit more complicated by adding more led lights of different colours that would come on in a sequence while you was blowing on the tube. We figure out how to do it and it looked really amazing.

A4 Paper Workshop
A4 Paper Workshop
During this exercise we was given a list of challenges of what do with just one piece of paper and nothing else to enhance the paper e.g. paint or other accessory may be used as a constituent of the final product. We could use a small amount of glue or tape but it would be better if we chose not to. At first I found this a bit hard because I couldn’t get out of the mindset that it is just a piece of paper. After
a while it got more interesting as i started to play with the paper a bit more, it was also good working as a class because when others started making their idea other ideas just seem to bounce off there’s and pushes you further. Some of the things that we had to try and do with the paper are making it as long as possible, making it as small as possible without cutting it. Some of the others included make
it support as heavy weight as possible or making it as beautiful, functional, monumental or loud as possible. I found it amazing the way that the variety of ideas came across and people would think of ideas to outdo others. As the person that could fold the piece of paper in half seven time (along the long side) would get a prize from Biggles because it is physically impossible unless you cut the paper. It
was an interesting day but wasn’t the most enjoyable. I like the feedback session that we had at the end of the day as it was an eye opener and helped you to know what others thought of your pieces of work. The worked looked very different when light was being shined over it because it created something beautiful with the shadows from different angles in some case the shadows made the work more wonderful.
A4 Paper Workshop: Egg Dropping Exercise
This was part of the paper workshop and this time we had to make an egg case with one piece of paper that was strong enough to stop the egg from breaking or even cracking when it hit the ground from around a metre high. I enjoyed this exercise because everyone came up with really different ideas and some of the ones that you thought would work didn’t so it wasn’t predictable. I especially enjoyed the testing of the product as some worked better than others and it was a bit of a chance to get our
hands dirty. Although mine didn’t work that well because it turned upside down while it was falling and it cracked very badly. The only thing that I can complain about is the fact that there weren’t enough eggs to go round and I would have loved to do more testing.
Wayfinding: Brainstorming
For this project we were looking at the problem of navigating the building from a user perspective. I think that this was a very good project because when i first started the University I found it very hard to find my way around. You are basically thrown in at the deep end and expected to find your way around as you go along. So I really do think that the way that new users/ students navigate the building needs to be improved. At first we started looking at the different problems that new user may have when they first arrive in the
building. Once we had discovered the problems we started thinking about ways that we can solve them and we wrote the ideas down on post it notes. When everyone had written down there ideas we started to categories the post it notes into different group such as ‘new user/part users’, ‘How to categorise and recognise?’ and ‘How to give and take information’. We started breaking it down more and more so that it because manageable and we could focus on one topic at a time. For the next part of the projects we had to
get in to pairs and work on different part of the project so that it could come together at the end and work together. Our group was working on signage there are many different categorise under signage e.g. language, colour, lighting, symbols, positioning and shape & object but we decided to work on the colour aspect of it so we started making some notes and looking back over the notes that have already been made which then developed in to working out design ideas so we started to work on different designs and solutions.
Wayfinding: Colour Navigation Solutions
At the beginning of this project we went around the university in our groups and started taking pictures of the different parts of the building that we thought we would want the line to go on the floor and of any signs that were already around the building. We looked at different ways that we could add the lines and create a nice effect we was also working with Francisca and Joel looking at way that we could make the signs more clear so that they would be an
easier way to navigate the building. So we was also looking at areas that could use a sign, some places have different routes that can lead to the same places as well as route that can only be accessed through a certain place even though that are part of the same block. Ritchie then added some guidelines on some of the photographs for part of the navigation to see how it would work with the idea that we had. The way that he edited the photographs make me see
how it really could work depending on the colours that we used. You can see the improvement when the pictures you compare it to the original picture I especially like the way that the lines look as they go up the stairs as if give you a bit more of something to look at. I really like the way that it turned out on the image and when I looked at I got the idea of making the I.D cards match the block that the student is from. I think that this would be quite useful for new users
because they could just look at the card and get an idea of where they should be going with the colour coded system. It also completes the identity a bit more. This is when we had to split into two groups so Joel and Francisca stated working on the keys, maps and signs that would fit in with the coloured line system that we was working with so that it would become too confusing for people that were trying to follow it throughout the building. Ritchie to
Wayfinding: Colour Navigation Solutions
scanned his I.D card so that I could start working on it when he sent me the scan I started to try out a few ideas of how this would work with the colours that we were using. We already decided the colours that we would associate with each area and block. At first I tried changing the colour of the name as well as the strip on the card but after I done this I thought that maybe it would look better and make more of a statement if it was only the strip that was in the colour as it would follow the same theme as well as colour. I kept the first designs but change just the colour of the strip, I think change the colour of the strip as an idea I think that it can be quite simple but effective with the guides but I don’t think it would work as well by itself. Overall I like the way that the project has come together and I would like to see it happen because I think that it is a good solution to the problem.
Wayfinding: User Feedback
“Good Idea”
“Stands Out” Before we set to get some user feedback we wrote some questions down so that we could ask every person the same questions We only wrote down five question because we didn’t want to keep people to long, the The questions that we asked were: 1. What do you think of this design as a navigation system for the university? 2. Do you think that it would work? 3. We were thinking about having the I.D cards using the same
theme. What do you think of this idea? 4. Would you mind the colour? 5. Would you change anything about the design? We made a plan of the way that we was going to go about this before we left and we decided that i would take the photographs and Ritchie would take the notes while Bex was asking the questions. I think that this work quite well and the feedback that we got was very useful and it follows:
Person Three
Person Four
• Yea it is nice but too many colours. • I think that it would work. People would get used to it quickly. • Yes. That a good idea of using the I.D cards. • Each course should be able to pick their colour. • I would change the colours and stick to primary colours.
• Like the floor but don’t like the way that it is on the sign • If the sign was written in the same colours • Makes it easier • Extending the identity • I.D cards not necessary • Graphic Design is pink • Clear, nice - NO horrible browns
“Easy to follow”
“Bright Colours”
Person One
Person Two
• Good idea • Easy to follow • I.D cards would be useful • Clear way for new students. • Wouldn’t mind the colours • Not effective when usy – can’t see the lines... • Can be covered up easily under feet when there is a lot of a students • Maybe you could put some lines on the walls in some places
• Good Idea • Would work • Not sure about the cards, wouldn’t be able to match up the colour properly from the I.D cards and the floor. • Wouldnt mind about the colours that are used
Person Five
Person Six
• Sound alright • Yea I think that it would work • Not difficult to understand • Not too keen on the I.D cards • Wouldn’t mind which colours • Lines shouldn’t be so close together, so that colour blind can see it easier
• Nice, bright, stand out, would be good. • Yea it would work and it would catch on. • I didn’t have a clue were to go on the first day. • Easy to understand. • Would b e a good idea. • Must be bright colours. • Relates to the style of the University.
Making An Entrance Project
Making An Entrance Project
For this project we needed to think of a way that we could make a door look more interesting and manage the way that the people walking through it interact with it. When I first got this brief the first thing that I done was to go on the internet to get some images of doors and do some drawing of existing doors so that I could get a bit more of an idea what I should do and where I should go with think project. This gave me more of an idea of what was al-
ready out there and where I should go next with the project. Some of the doors that I found didn’t make much of a statement themselves but the buildings that were surrounding them make them that much more spectacular design. For example the picture of the church building that had the most intricate details. While researching I came across a few images that dealt more with shape and shadows and I thought that it would be quite in-

teresting if I started to look a bit more into shadow because it is nice that the way that the light is can change the way that the door is perceived. Another thing that I came across was handles that were illuminating and that would change colour as people touched them and I found that nice because it would interact with different people differently with a change of colours maybe. This idea lead me to think about the way that people
react to particular doors and the way that things can be assume by the type of handle that is used on the door. So I was thinking about messing with that perception a little bit by adding different handles all over the which would mean that the handles that actually opens the door would be camouflaged and it wouldn’t be the one that u would naturally think it would be. The other idea that came as part of look-
ing at illuminating handles was for me to have sensors around the door so that when people were walking past or going through the door it would make lots of different walking sounds think could be of different heals or different animals. While that was going on I was thinking that across the bottom of the door there would be different feet walking past on a loop or something when people approach the door. It would
make the area look and sound busier that it actually was so even if you were the only person in the area you wouldn’t feel alone. Of coursed that idea got cut down immediately by Biggles as he said that I shouldn’t try involving too much sensors and stuff so I went back to the drawing board. I moved on to think of an idea that would work very well in the uni because people are always carrying around a lot of

This room is under 24 hour surviellance. KEEP OUT!
stuff and heavy artwork. A door that could be operated by the feet would be very useful with a button on the floor and a sign say ‘STEP HERE TO ENTER’ or something along those lines. This would be much easier rather than going to the extent of an automatic door which would open every time that somebody walked past even if they didn’t want to enter the room, I am sure that would become annoying during lessons. Another angle that I didn’t consider of that idea was the disabled access and how wheelchair users would press the button. I would also have to think about the amount of pressure that need to be applied to the button to make the door open as some people are stronger than others. I think that this idea is a pretty good idea but I am not sure how to make it would in the short time that we have left. This is when I came to my final idea which at first I was thinking about
how we could make the classroom that we are working in more secure because it doesn’t actually have a lock and people can get in there at any time. It made me think about security cameras and the big brother society that we are living in as well. With all of these cameras and rules that we are suppose to follow and we do because that is the way that we are condition to function. At first I thought of having a lock on a door that isn’t actually locked but just looks as if it is locked to people that aren’t meant to know. I know if I saw I lock it would stop me from trying to open it in case it looked as if I was breaking in or something. The second part of this idea that I came up with is the one that I am going to work with. It would involve having an official sign (would have to be an official sign so that people take it more seriously) on the door like ‘This Room Is Under 24 Hour Surveillance. KEEP OUT!’ or
‘BEWARE YOUR ON VIDEO’ with a camera a small video camera fitted on the wall that is moving around but doesn’t actually have a tape in it. I’m sure that this would change people behaviour towards a certain place they might not do something that they have always done before. When I got some feedback on this idea people said that the camera might not be necessary and that maybe I should think about jus having the sign there and people will start to wonder where the camera is. I think that is true because it works on so many different occasions around the city. Another piece of valuable feedback that I got was that I should put the sign somewhere that people would expect the sign to be like at a toilets or something so that I can see people reactions and to see if it actually works. I think that is what I am going to because it would be more interesting that just using it in a normal place.
Liminal Spaces
Liminality is a term that can be used to express the example of a crossing over. An example of this could be crossing over from dark to light and from light to dark (sunrise and sunset). Liminality is often associated with the breakdown of social convention and the greater freedom to operate. I found this photographs of a car park in Germany where you don’t have to park your own car in fact you can’t because the machine parks it for you. I think that this could be define as a liminal in terms of the car because it practically setting on air and the owner need to have so much trust in the machinery so that they can make sure that they get there car back in one piece or get the right car back . If you wanted to find your car in a hurry I don’t think that it would allow you because you would have to wait in a queue and wait for the machine to find it where as when you park it yourself you can just go and pick it up and drive off anytime that you want. I would much rather just park my car myself at least that way I would know exactly where it was and where I could go if I wanted to find it or get something out of it. Also you have that added assurance that your car is safe when you actually know what is being done with it.

Throughout this project I realised that once you begin to watch people over a long period of time you begin to understand the different rituals that people have. Some rituals can be something as small as eating you breakfast
Friday
I have decided to base my project on rituals and private space. The way that I have decided to do this is by taking pictures of my sister over a few days while she is doing the same activities. I think it shows that once you get used to doing a particular thing or when you get into a routine things begin to

Celebrity Diet Collage
The Way We Eat: Role Play’s This role play was about a teenager that was eating with her dad but she didn’t really want to eat because she wants to stay thin so that she can look like the girls that are in the magazines. So basically the magazines have lead to her having an eating disorder. The basic theme of this role play was that the daughter and the dad didn’t have a very good relationship so they found it very hard to talk about her eating problems. The dad didn’t
really know what to do and the daughter didn’t really want to open up to him. While sitting at the dining table she still had her headphones in as if she didn’t want to even bother talking to her dad and she was pretending to eat by pushing the food around the plate. I think that playing this role really help me with my research because it made me have to think about how a teenager with eating disorders would act and get into that mind set.
The Way We Eat: Storyboard
During this project I have researched a number of different avenues. The one that really stood out to me was celebrity diet and how magazines like to point out when they have put on a bit of weight, they say it like being a size 12 or 14 is overweight. I think that this is bad because there are a lot of young girls that are these sizes and it is making them think that they are overweight. This can lead to many girls having eating disorders or starting on extreme diets so that they can look like what they see in the magazines when in actual fact some of the people in those magazines don’t even look like that before they are airbrushed.

I’m not sure that using this word would practically appeal to young girls that are conscience about their weight. Instead of using these types of names I could have names that could represent celebrities but not in a way that is too serious, e.g. Paris Stilton Cheesy Mash Potatoes.

These are the questions that we asked: 1. Do you use this station often? 2. When you this station do you the use the underground as well as the DLR? 3. Do you think that it is easy to get between the two? 4. Is there anything that u would change?
Guy Waiting For His Train Yea I used to use this station a lot but mostly for the DLR. Information should be changed because if something happens while you are on the underground you wouldn’t know about it because it is not displayed until you get to the DLR station. It should be said over the loudspeaker if the services are running and the information desk should be manned at all times because the service is not very reliable. The route is ok if you know your way around but he did think that the idea of adding an extra stop on the jubilee line was a good idea to cut out the 15min walk.
Small Bald Guy Half On His Phone Half Drinking His Coffee Yea I use this station every day. I do usually come from the underground to come though to here. Erm fairly but I come here every day so I think that it I could do it blindfolded. I would make a very drastic change and have a secret passage for workers and another route for tourist so that we will never end up bumping into each other.

Young Woman – Late 20’s I don’t usually use this station because I normally just get on the underground but I am meeting a friend for lunch today. No I don’t really use this station; I mostly use the underground because it is so much easier. Urm (big pause) sometimes it can be quite easier to get between the two but around this time it can get quite busy and you tend to bump into people. Make a route were there isn’t that many people that are just hanging around or going shopping especially for commuters.
Systematic Failures
From the feedback that we got when we went to Canary Wharf station. We decided to make a model to show the way that we that we think that we could change the way that people move between the underground and the DLR so that workers and tourist don’t end up getting in each other way. In this model we have designed a fast lane that will be only used by commuters but tourist will be allowed to use it on the weekends and on bank holidays. The barrier would use an oyster card system for access. When you get through the barrier you will step straight onto a ‘travelator’ that will take you to your destination so instead of walking you will get transported all the way there. There would also be different lanes so that if you wanted to go in a particular direction you stand on that lane and it will take you to the right place. We have also designed a pit stop that can be use d on the way to the station if you didn’t want to stop for too long. There is also an area where you can pick up a newspapers from the newspapers stand that will be right next to the travelator so commuter will be able to just grab a newspaper as they are going past without stop or getting off.

that station and it will take them to the station that they are looking for. I think this will be used in conjunction with the model so that the insects can be place throughout the buildings. I think we have thought about the way that different people will interact in the station
and cater for their needs. The sign that I have designed for the Pit Stop that is on the way to the station. I’m not sure if this sign goes well with the other sign that I have designed for the Canary Wharf Transport Links. I have kept it simple so that it doesn’t get confusing.

A CAR LEAVES!
OH NO! WHERE IS MY PURSE?!
This is just a typical storyboard of what it is like for a parent when they go shopping with their child. Basically the storyboard is outlining the problems with the type of mother and baby parking that we have at the moment because people that don’t have children just park in them spaces as they are nearer to the shops. This can be really frustrating especially when the child starts getting annoyed as it isn’t really regulated properly. Another problem is the way that other people rush into the space before you get a chance to move.
Prototyping: Redesigning The Public Sector
I have made this model to show how my idea would work. My idea is that basically the mother and the baby section will be blocked off with a barrier that only parents will be able to access with a swipe card that they can apply for when their child is born and it will last for seven years until so that people will not continue using it when their child get older. I think that this idea would work quite well because it doesn’t change the way that the car park is set out it just makes a barrier to block out the people that shouldn’t be using that area. Although there will be a limited amount of space at least you know that the people that are in that area are meant to be there and this doesn’t stop them parking in the other area if they have to.

her And Baby Parking This is the sign that will be used throughout the mother and baby section of the car park so that the section has a bit more branding so that it will stand out from any other normal car park and it will allow people that are not used to the service to know that whether or not they are allowed to use the area and why not.
For the card I have used the same logo that would be all of the signs so that everything is co-ordinated with each other. I have designed the card with the mothers picture because it wouldn’t make much sense in putting the child on there because they would be changing so much in a short space of time.
